days and what season it was so they would know when to crop

or plant the plants

. It is a big use today so we know what the day month is, it also

helps us remember where we are

supposed to be such as a doctors appointment or the

dentist or a birthday party.

Proyet was the time of the year when the Nile

receded. Because the temperatures

were much cooler than other times

of the year this was the perfect time

for the farmers to

sow their crops. Proyet occurred nor

mally from December to March.

Stone slabs were carefully cut and dressed. A first dynasty tomb at

Saqqara is lined with slabs of limestone, but stone architecture appeared in

Egypt much later than brick-based architecture, so methods used with brick

were applied to it initially. At first, small rectangles of stone were set in

rows and mortared, just like bricks, but soon the techniques changed.

Construction used massive blocks of stone weighing up to 200 tons.
