2018-2019 Research Promotion Campaign

Thank you very much foryour continued support ofASHRAE ResearchCanada!

Many of you are awarethat ASHRAE researchplays an important role inour everyday lives. Ourbuilt environmentincluding everything fromour homes, offices andhospitals to quality of foodand living conditions inairplanes are dependentupon the researchconducted by ASHRAE tokeep people healthy andcomfortable. Every dollarraised by ASHRAEResearch Canada staysin Canada to furtherresearch in the HVAC&Rindustry. Furthermore, for every dollar raised,

two to three dollars are investedin research, here in Canada.

Thanks to the dedication of ourdonors and the efforts of the2017-2018 RP Campaign Team, the Ottawa Valley Chapter hasraised 121% of our total goal of$30,100 for 2017-2018. A total of$36,517 was raised for ResearchPromotion. Thank you very muchfor all of your support!!!

In addition to the amount raised thechapter was able to fully fund thescholarship that we have beenworking towards over the past twoyears. The remaining amount of$30,000 was sent to Society in May.The money submitted to thescholarship counts towards ourResearch Promotion goal andtakes our total amount raised to$66,517, or 221% of the goal!

We are excited that we will be in aposition to start awarding an annualscholarship to studentsbeginning next year!

At the May Program Meeting, fourtickets to see the OttawaRedblacks were graciously donatedby InAir Environmental and$520.00 was raised towards thisyear’s campaign. Thank you verymuch InAir Environmental for yoursupport!

ASHRAE Announces StudentDesign Competition Winners

ATLANTA (Aug.2, 2018) – ASHRAEannounced the winners of its 2018ASHRAE Student DesignCompetition and Setty FamilyFoundation Applied EngineeringChallenge. The competitionsrecognize outstanding student designprojects and encourages students tobecome involved in the design ofenergy-efficient HVAC systems. Atotal of 63 teams participated and 35teams were judged at Society level.

The guidelines of the StudentDesign Competition providedbackground information enablingteams to participate in up to threecategories:

HVAC Design Calculations•HVAC System Selection•Integrated Sustainable•Building Design (ISBD)

This year’s competition focused on anew 70,000 square foot (6,500square meter), four story mixed usecomplex north of Istanbul, Turkeynear Arnavutkoy which is just southof the new international airport. Thefacility featured retail and officespaces, a restaurant, and a hotelin support of the upcoming rapidgrowth in the area when the airportis completed in 2019.

First place in the HVAC DesignCalculations category was awardedto Jack Buckley, MadelineSampsel, Austin Seagren andChristopher Wozney of the

University of Nebraska-Lincoln.Faculty advisors are Joe Hazel, DanKarnes and David Yuill.

The team selected a heat recoverychiller in conjunction with ageothermal loop field as theprimary system for the building. Thegeothermal loop is a sustainableapproach for cooling and heating thatcan easily be hidden from occupantview under a parking lot. Thegeothermal heat recovery chillerprovides efficient, flexible means ofproducing heating or chilled due tothree operating modes availablethrough the virtual endcap.

Placing first in the HVAC SystemSelection category were KevinClark, Madison Hopfinger, EvanReese, Whitney Luck and AndresSaldivar from Kansas StateUniversity. Faculty advisors areJulia Keen and Fred Hasler.

The team selected water-to-airheat pumps, water-to-water heatpumps, active chilled beams, anda hybrid ground loop/coolingtower. The system proposal allowsfor the integration of sustainablesolutions that encompass energyefficiency, human comfort andproductivity, indoor environmentalquality, and architectural aesthetic.

Receiving first place in IntegratedSustainable Building Designcategory was an internationalcollaborative team from ThePennsylvania State University(PSU) and Technical University ofDenmark (DTU).

The PSU team members areWilliam McCann, SalvadorOrdorica, Ashutosh Ojha, MarieRottschaefer, SiddharthSwaminathan and Gbadebo Tobi.Their faculty advisor is William P.Bahnfleth.

The DTU team members areVasileios Filis, Myrto Ananida andAlexandre Hugo Matthieu. Theirfaculty advisor is EleftheriosBourdakis.

The collaborative team providedinsight into the sensitiveenvironmental crisis of thedecreasing water supply Istanbulfaces due to an expandingpopulation. The team focused onintegrating the building into thenatural slope of the landscape todecreases the excavation footprintand blend the facility into the naturallandscape.

In the 2018 Setty FamilyFoundation Applied EngineeringChallenge, Iik Wahyu Anggara,Katon Vembriarto Widayaswara,Yoga Hutomo Putra, MohammadIlham Akbar and Fahmi Rizaldifrom Bandung Institute ofTechnology received first place.

ASHRAE Publishes UpdatedLegionellosis Standard

ATLANTA (Aug. 13, 2018) -ASHRAE has published a revisededition of its standard that providesa more comprehensive approach topreventing the growth and spread ofLegionella.

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2018,Legionellosis: Risk Management forBuilding Water Systems establishes

minimum legionellosis riskmanagement requirements forbuilding water systems. The 2018edition provides clarification ofcompliance requirements, as well asan update to enforceable,code-intended language to facilitateadoption of the standard for codeand regulatory purposes.

The standard was originallydeveloped to assist designers andbuilding operators establish watermanagement plans that includepractices specific to the systems thatexist in a particular building, campusor health care facility. It is intendedfor use by those involved in design, construction, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and service ofcentralized building watersystems and components.

“Standard 188 was the first industrystandard in the U.S. to addressLegionnaire’s disease prevention,”said Paul Lindahl, chair of theStandard 188 committee. “Since thisstandard centers on the developmentand implementation of good design, operations and maintenanceprocedures, it is important to makeupdates on a regular basis. The 2018edition of the standard focuses onimproved usability, offering betterguidance to minimize the risk of thispotentially fatal disease and savelives.”

The 2018 edition of Standard 188provides:

A description of environmental•conditions that promote thegrowth of Legionella.

Informative annexes and•bibliography with suggestions, recommendations, andreferences to additionalguidance.Minimum Legionellosis risk•management requirements forbuildings and associated potableand non-potable water systems.Requirements for Legionellosis•control strategies anddocumentation.

The CDC estimates there arebetween 8,000 and 18,000 cases ofLegionnaires’ disease in theUnited States each year – and morethan 10 percent of these cases arefatal. Legionella can also cause aless-severe influenza-like illnessknown as Pontiac Fever. Most ofthose cases are the result ofexposure to Legionella found inbuilding water systems.

The cost of ASHRAE Standard188-2018 is $75 for ASHRAEmembers ($88, non-members). Toorder, visitwww.ashrae.org/bookstore orcontact ASHRAE Customer ContactCenter at 1-800-527-4723 (UnitedStates and Canada), 404-636-8400(worldwide) or fax 678-539-2129.
