What is the American Dream? Our ancestors viewed the American Dream as limitless opportu-nity, the freedom to attain success on the foun-dations of the valued principles hard work and diligence. Despite arriving with nothing but them-selves and their determina-tion, our ancestors forged their way in America, instilling the values of unyielding in-dustry and persistence in the youth. And just so, we Asian Americans have defined our-selves through our academic and relative socioeconomic success, with young Asian Americans entering and lead-ing in fields such as medi-cine, engineering, and busi-ness. But is socioeconomic prosperity truly where the American Dream ends?

Although we have high representation in profession-al fields, proportional to our population, we are severely underrepresented in politics and leadership positions within these professional fields. The fundamental problem we face is that we cannot satisfy ourselves with solely economic prosper-ity; as our population grows, so do the problems facing Asian Americans and so does the need for action through empowerment. Politicians often overlook the blatant injustice in reverse discrimi-nation against Asian Americans in college admis-sions processes, job applications, and general social interactions. Is it not a contradiction of the American dream to disproportionally limit the op-portunity available to many highly qualified appli-

nomic affluence; we need Asian Americans enter-ing politics and serving not as highly valued em-ployees, but as CEOs of major companies and corporations.

If we truly want to assimilate ourselves into American society, we must be the effecters of change, not just a neglected and mostly neu-tral demographic group. Now is the time to take charge as we face growing debt issues, disagreements over illegal im-migration, debates over taxa-tion, and problems with corpo-rate gluttony. It is evident that the solutions to our most dire problems in the impending and very imminent future will not come easily; perhaps our nation could benefit from our values of the principles of hard work, moderation, and perseverance. The American Dream’s promise lies in its promise of opportunity. Just as our ancestors seized

the opportunity to raze the walls of poverty, we must seize this opportunity to raze the walls of discrimination and prejudice, and instead, blaze our own triumphant trail to the establishment of an America in which Asian Americans have an equal voice and contribution in thrusting us into the future, progressing to better both our nation and world, towards what is truly an embodiment of the American Dream.

cants on the basis of race? Now that we have firmly established our roots in American society, we must also begin to assert our opinions and to take stances on issues that we face collectively as a nation. We cannot settle for only socioeco-

Venerable Master Hsing Yun was born in China in 1927. At the age of twelve, he tonsured under Venerable Master Ahikai of Qixia Mountain in Nanjing. After many years of education, he because the 48th patriarch of the Linji Chan School of Buddhism. In 1949, he arrived in Taiwan, and 18 years later, in 1967, founded the Fo Guang Shan (Buddha’s Light Mountain) Buddhists Order.

At the age of 84, he has faced 40 years of diabetes that led to a retinal detachment. With unclear visions in both eyes, he can barely see. Despite having to write calligraphy with shaking hands, he still is able to let his heart guide his hands in completing the extremely rare “one-stroke calligraphy.”

No discontinu-ation is allowed from beginning to end, as any discontinuation will make it difficult to continue to the next character, because his vision does not allow him to distinguish the distance between each character. Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s unique calligraphy style fully displays the total absorption and calmness of mind essential to produce such works of art in the face of such adversity.

Last year, he donated all of the proceeds he received from the royalties from the books he had written, to establish a public benefit trust. The trust applies these funds toward organizing different public welfare activities to benefit society.

However, in order to continue the fundrais-ing, Venerable Master Hsing Yun makes the

The One-Stroke Calligraphy Exhibition started since 2009 and has been displayed across Asia including Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Beijing then to Japan and Australia. During 2010, the world tour continued to Europe and North America. Taste of Thailand Food Festival 2011The Taste of Thailand Festival, held at Wat Dham-

maram Florida in Kissimmee, Florida is a wonderful culinary adventure for all. Each year the Thai Buddhist Temple, Wat Dhammaram Florida has held the event, it has grown larger, both in food vendors and attend-ees. This year it was held on Sunday October 2nd. The weather was perfect and the festive atmosphere was abundant. In addition to all the great food offerings, there is live Thai traditional music and dance. All at-tendees are invited to dance with the Thai people to celebrate friendship and this wonderful event. At this event, you can truly see why Thailand is called the “Land of Smiles”.

There is so much food to try. If you love Thai food, this is the place to be on this day. For a modest entry fee, you can try all the food offer-ings, which are covered in the admission price. With a few exceptions, all the food and drink is included. In addition to the food being offered, there are also vendors selling Thai souvenirs, tropical garden plants, as well as Thai produced textile goods and art.

I had barely arrived when my wife whisked me off to try the various dishes provided by the vendors. I was stuffed before the event had start-ed. There were the usual offerings of Pad Thai, a noodle dish, Fermented Rice, Thai Chicken Curry Rice, Thai Style Beef Noodle Soup, Thai egg rolls, and Papaya Salad. My personal favor-ite is the Laab Gai or Thai Chicken Salad, and Thai Chicken Satay, which is a marinated chick-

en breast meat, skewered on a stick, and grilled. With Thai sticky rice, called keow niow in Thai, it is an awesome treat. I also found the Thai Icee’s to be very refreshing. They come in a multitude of tropical flavors. A young friend of mine that was there recommended the Pina Colada Icee. There was also Thai Iced Tea, as well as Thai Iced Coffee. If you have never had it, it is a taste worth trying. You will get “hooked”. And if you are concerned about the “heat”, yes, the vendors will adjust the spiciness to accommodate your palate.

I have to mention the grounds at which this event is held. It is a beautiful place, reminiscent of parts of Thailand. For those that attend, this is a mini vacation to Thailand for a day. There are various buildings at the Wat (Temple Grounds), which depict various important events in the life of the Buddha. They are all beautiful, and if you

have any interest in finding out about the signifi-cance of these buildings, any of the Thai people or the Monks will be willing to tell you about them. All attendees are encouraged to go inside the main temple. Proper respect, and the removal of shoes before entering are all that is required. And yes, photos are permitted as long as there is no service in the Temple at the time.

If you were unable to attend the festival this year you missed a great time. But you need not feel disappointed. I am certain that the Taste of Thailand Festival will be bigger and better next year. Just make sure you bring a good appetite and a little “taste” of adventure will be your re-ward.

If you are interested in following this, and other events held at Wat Dhammaram Florida, please check out the website at www.watflorida.org

ACAS hosted Kyudo Workshop

On September 10, Kyudo workshop was host-ed by Asian Cultural Arts Society at the Jesse-Brock Community Center in Winter Garden. As I walked in, there was a palpable excitedcalmness in the air. All of the participants were preparing their minds for what was sure to bea new expe-rience for most. Complementary white tabi (split toed socks) were provided to allparticipants. Three instructors of Kyudo stood before us: Ron Jones sensei, LesleeWilliamssensei, and Ed Symmes sensei. They prepared the gear: bows, arrows, and a target stoodout the most. A formal dojo was established within the space. We were all asked to bow as weentered and left and not to bring our shoes past a certain point on the floor. All of thispreparation and built up excitement was leading to the moment when sensei calledevery-one’s attention to line up and begin our education in Kyudo, the Japanese “Way of theBow.”

Jones sensei took lead to introduce us all to the world of Kyudo through a demonstration. As Jones sensei drew back his bow, his focus was intense. Once released, the arrow flew intothe target as sensei kept his form. It was an excellent exhibition of Kyudo’s three tenets: ShinZen Bi, or Truth Goodness Beauty.

Archery in Japan has a deep rooted his-tory. However, it wasn’t until the Yayoi period (500BCE– 300AD) that people began recording the images and details of archery. In the 12th century, theryuha (styles) of the bow began to develop and unfold as the samurai gained power. Withcivil war permeating the daily lives of the Japanese warriors, mounted archery became avaluable tool for the numerous warlords. Even with the imported western firearms, archeryre-mained a staple in the Japanese military forces because of its longer range and capacity tolaunch arrows more quickly than a gun could be refired. The historical downfall of the bowwas it’s require-ment for skilled operators. A gun could be fired by an untrained person withrelatively desirable results. The evolution of Kyudo has left a num-ber of different forms ofpractice where the focus tends to be on physical enjoyment and mental and spiritualdiscipline.

By Justin Kagan

Jones sensei explained, “Kyudo is like Japa-nese Tai Chi.” The focus of Kyudo is less aboutthe accuracy of the shot and more about the form. If the form is correct, the accuracy will be there. The entire path appears to be very meditative in nature and its relationship with Zen isap-parent. The form itself was relatively easy to understand,

but the complexity and detailswithin it clearly create something that is able to be studied for a lifetime.

The fundamental movements of Kyudo

represent different variations of walking, sitting, kneeling, standing, turning, and drawing the bow. In the seminar, our focus was on theHassetsu, or Eight Stages of Shooting. The eight stages are: ashibumi (footing), dozukuri(posture), yugamae (readying the bow), uchiokoshi (raising the bow), hikiwake (drawing the bow), kai (completing the draw), hanare (release), and zanshin (continua-tion). Each phaseholds as much importance as the last. The process of a shot is executed the same each time, lending focus equally to each stage.

To begin our own training, we first started by simply learning and practicing the basic form without any equipment. Every step had to be per-fect. After we covered the basic form, the sensei worked together to get each of us a gomuyumi. This is a sort of portable practice bow made of an exercise band. The gomuyumi provided a handle and the resistance necessary for building up to the bow. We also all received dowel ya (arrows) measured specifically to our body. Once this was complete, the sensei led us back into our prac-tice, now with the gomuyumi and ya. The addition of the equipment brought the experience of the form into a whole new light. The resistance of the band and the responsibility of the arrow required

all of us to draw on new levels of concentration. This was evident by the relative silence through-out the entire seminar. There was no room to speak, only pay attention and be conscious.

As we continued to explore the world of Kyu-do and delve into the Eight Stages, it was fasci-nating to continue to observe the extraordinary detail observed at each step. The first stage was ashibumi, or placing the footing. This stage was all about building the best foundation possible for shooting. Proper distance between the feet and how to get there with proper form was the em-phasis. The next stage was dozukuri, or forming the body. The sensei taught us to form a circle with our arms. For me, it was completely foreign movement. In our sword training, we tend to keep our elbows in and close to center. Extending them completely to form this circle was challenging, but made sense as we approached the next stage.

relaxed while the feet were correct. It was all about proper mental and physical alignment. The next step is probably what most people think of when they think of archery: drawing the bow, or hikiwake. Please note that this does not occur in Japanese archery until the fifth stage. The proper form led to the draw of the bow. It didn’t require effort like my experiences with a compound bow. It was all about maintaining the Truth of form. Next was Kai, or completing the draw. Our train-ing manual for the seminar says it better than I can reference my own experience, “Kai means ‘Meeting.’ The term is used in kyudo to show that each of the previous stages of shooting combines to form kai. The release is a natural result of their meeting. The success or failure of the shooting is not determined after the release, it is deter-mined in kai. It is said that kai holds the essence of kyudo: if hikiwake is the physical draw then

kai is its spiritual complement. Most teachers suggest that the length of kai should be about six to eight seconds in order to achieve a good hanare. ” Hanare is the release.

There was a moment, even in training with the gomuyumi that I felt a distinguishable

desire to simply let go. The manual reflects on times in nature such as when “snow falls under its own weight from a leaf” to represent this feel-ing. I’m sure that with more training, this feeling is more predictable than my experience and thus is something that can be harnessed. Finally, once the arrow has been released, there is a continua-tion, or zanshin, stage. This is a practice of keep-ing form and sending your spirit to the target. This stage also explores the return of the bow to a proper position and the movement back to the first stage.

The kyudo seminar allowed us to explore a world unknown by many. It allowed us an op-portunity to touch a culture and an art that has opened our hearts and our minds to an unknown possibility. The art of Kyudo is not about where the arrow lands, but instead creating a form that includes the accuracy of the shot. In many ways, this reflects a perspective we can take on life. We don’t always know where the arrow will land, but we can take efforts to create the proper form and choices in our loves that allow the arrow to find its perfect home.

This event was sponsored by Asian Cultural Arts Society in an effort to continue its mission to educate and enlighten the community through Asian Cultural Arts. Participants’ donations for participation helped to bring the instructors to Central Florida and paid for their time and ac-comodations. None of this would have been possible without the efforts of Bill Clark and Lisa Leitl. Lisa provided the connections and Bill the execution and organization of the seminar. Thank you to David Orman as well for his part in es-tablishing a facility for this to take place. Finally, we are eternally grateful to all three instructors, Jones sensei, Williams sensei, andSymmes sen-sei for their sharing of Kyudo. ACAS will continue to offer events like this one that explore the Asian culture. Visit www.asianculturenow.org to learn more and join the mailing list. Finally, thank you to Asia Trend Magazine for helping us share this experience with the community that was not able to attend.

Yugamae, or readying the bow, is the stage where the arrow is notched, the bow is properly gripped for shooting, and the target is observed. From this point on, the target remains the focus. Next comesuchiokoshi, or raising the bow. This stage is when the bow is raised slightly above the head without being drawn and provided a great deal of challenge for me in terms of form. Dragon should be out of water in accordance to the I-Ching analogy, but this year the dragon is hidden in deep water and that would create problems worldwide. Dragon in water is trapped and is hibernating in which seem helpless. Dragon should be flying out of water in order to command and strike accord!

Inflation is inevitable! USA is the culprit to the world problems! They

caused the financial turmoil and led the Europe in debt crisis and now she is in Asia to stir commotion and create alliances against the Chinese! Asia should not fall into her trap!

Many countries are changing leaderships in the year 2012. It is rather an uncertain year due to turbulent energies set in; many countries are call-ing out for war and for trades’ protections. Internal power struggles led by economic and political arena would ignite some ugly scenes worldwide.

You might not want to trust the economic date release in this year! It is also a year of diseases that you should avoid travelling to the Southwest!

The west is struggling in wheelchair while the East is dragged down by such in equilibrium of the west. Thailand had a bad flood in decades which would lead to serious outbreak of diseases. You can see a worse of a per-son when come to hardships! Definitely a year that you might want to pass.

Australia and New ZealandExtreme natural disasters can’t seem to happen in this region, nonethe-

less bit and pieces of catastrophe in road traffic accidents are inevitable.

Middle EastBeside Arab Peninsula, the rest of the states are facing uncertainness

and unwarranted tensions among neighbors. Especially Afghanistan that would face the worse ever catastrophe and natural disasters in unprec-edented manner. Avoid visiting this country in 2012.

EuropeFrequent air traffic accidents would occur here, for those frequent travel-

ers make sure you pray before you board on plane and better believe it, do some good deeds to repay the karmic debts! The debts crisis would linger on and things become immune as things get worsen.

The year of Water Dragon 2012

Master Kerby Kuek has been practicing Feng Shui and life reading for more than 10 years. His areas of expertise include Chinese astrology, name analysis, face reading, as well as I-Ching. Kuek strongly believes that Chinese Metaphysics is nothing superstition: It is a combination of formulae, experiences and common sense, whereby a trained master can skillfully integrate it into your daily life and thus help you to achieve your personal and financial goals. He has published three books on fung shui. Email: [email protected]

HSBC, one of the world’s largest banks, was founded in March 1865 when Hong Kong was still a British colony.

In 1993, political reasons made the lender relocate its global headquar-ters from the territory to London.

From a fung shui point of view, the site of the HSBC building in Central is the best formation of yang energy on Hong Kong Island.

This is due to the concentration of five dragons, or mountains, nearby. The formation of the five-dragon breath benefits not only HSBC but the sur-rounding buildings as well.

However, no single person or site can lay claim to everlasting glory. In time, the energy will lapse and, if not recharged, it will disperse and

diverge. The fung shui cycle is of 20 years and we are now in the eighth period

that started from 2004 and will end in 2013. During this period, the energy of the five dragons will start to fade away

- but don’t worry, it will not go away. What it means is that the influence of HSBC in the region, and in par-

ticular Hong Kong, will become less significant in relative terms. The reality is that mainland banks will only gain in prominence and influ-

ence in the region.

The change in the rotation of fung shui circles will benefit the mainland, with the energy filtering through to Hong Kong.

In order to get this energy to take root in Hong Kong, certain basic re-quirements must be met.

For instance, the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, located on the northern slope of the Victoria Peak with a highest point of 100 meters above sea level, is the dragon eye for Hong Kong Island fung shui. As such, proper maintenance of the gardens is extremely important.

Most importantly, the old bronze stature of King George VI should be replaced with either Chinese characters or leaders.

Otherwise, Western powers will still linger and interfere with the terri-tory’s internal and domestic affairs.

Thought of the week: To be a gentleman, one must study cosmic energy.

Christmas in Japan

Support Asia Trend Magazine, Become our Advertiser!

December 25th is not a national holiday in Japan. Unless it is on the weekend, people work and go to school on thatday. Christmas is mostly a commercial event there. The big corporations do the main decorating and illuminatingof their buildings and the trees.

The first recorded Christmas in Japan was a

Dedicated to the sun Goddess Amaterasu, this shrine is actually cosisting of many shrines which con-

nect a road that is part of the Wakayama pilgramage. A most beautiful example of ancient Japanese ar-chitecture and Heri-tage preservation.

The Kumano Nachi Taisha (shrine) is one of the most popular destinations and is a designated World Heritage Site. This shrine is nestled in the Kii Mountains by Nachi falls. The tallest waterfall in Japan.

Mass held by Jesuit missionaries (lead by Cosme de Torres) in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1552.Some believe that unrecorded celebrations were held before this date, starting in 1549 when Saint Francis Xavier arrived in Japan. Christianity was banned throughout Japan in 1612. However, a small enclave of Kakure Kirishitan (hidden Chris-tians) continued to practice underground over the next 250 years.

After all, only about 1% of the Japanese population is estimated to be Christian in Japan. Christmas isknown as more a time to spread hap-piness, rather than a religious celebration. Most enthusiastic about Christmas, however, seem to be retail stores and shopping malls, where Christmas trees, santa clauses and other sea-sonal decorations can be found several weeks in

advance.

Eating Christmas cakes is a Japanese way to celebrate Christmas Eve. Those cakes are usually made of sponge cake, strawberries and white whipped cream. In a survey, as many as 73 percent responded to celebrate Christmas with a cake.

1860-- The very first Christmas tree in Japan was displayed at German establishments.

1900--Meijiya (a food, liqueur and imported products retail) opened in Ginza, TOKYO and Christmas decorations became popular.

1931-- Mitsukoshi (a major department store) started light-up and Christmas sales.

Do you wonder what Christmas is like in Japan?

Giant pandas arrive in Scotland after 11-hour flight from China

Compiled by Asia Trend

For more photos: www.asiatrendmagazine.com/ATM_EventsPictures.html

Panda lovers in the UK have been waiting for the arrival of “Tian tian” and “Yang guang”, Edin-burgh zoo’s newest tenants. The giant bears left Chengdu in Sichuan Dec 4th early morning and arrived Scotland later in the evening Beijing time.

Both pandas headed West Dec 4th morning in a private Boeing 777.

The “FedEx Panda Express” waited for it’s two first class passengers who were busying chewing before departure.

“Tian tian” and “Yang guang” are the first pandas to arrive in the UK in 17 years, creating a lot of hype. As preparations continue in Edin-burough, some worry the bears may be over-whelmed by fans’ enthusiasm.

Hugh Roberts, chief executive from Edin-burgh Zoo, said: “We have had a tremendous response. Our website has been inundated with people who want to know about pandas...when they can come here. Our booking lines have been inundated.”

The eight-year-old couple “Tian tian” and “Yang guang” were born in 2003 in the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan province. Their arrival in the

UK is part of a 10-year China-UK joint research program studying how human-bred pandas can survive in the wild. Mother to be, ’Tian tian’, is ex-pected to give birth during their decade overseas.

The pandas will live separately in enclosures, each worth nearly US$0.4 million. Both have a pond, a cave and climbing structures made from tree trunks. Posters have already been hung and cameras set up as the UK waits for the pandas arrival to their new home.

Yo-Yo Ma, one of the recipients of the 2011 Kennedy Center Honors, poses for a photo following a dinner hosted by United States Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. on December 3rd, 2011. The 2011 honorees are actress Meryl Streep, singer Neil Diamond, actress Barbara Cook, musician Yo-Yo Ma, and musician Sonny Rollins.

On October 1st, Rissho Kosei-kai of Tampa Bay, a socially-engaged Bud-dhist organization headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, organized their first an-nual Japanese Cultural Festival in Clearwater, Florida. Around 300 visitors from around the Tampa Bay area came out on this cool, sunny day to take part in the festivities. Vendors sold washi-paper covered boxes, Japanese CDs and books, collectibles and home decor items. Entertainment included traditional and modern Japanese music, beautiful dances from Okinawa, martial arts performances by Gulf Coat Kendo, ongoing Urasenke-style tea ceremony demonstrations by Sarah Platter, yukata (cotton kimono) try-ons, origami, and other activities. As twilight drew near, guests were treated to spectacular performances from Matsuriza, a taiko drumming group that reg-ularly performs at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center in Orlando, as well as

JPOP singer Chii Sakurabi from Tokyo, Japan. Traditional festival games for the children and delicious Japanese food, such as oden (simmered eggs, meats, & vegetables), okonomiyaki (a sort of savory pancake with your choice of ingredients), and kakigori (snow cones) were available throughout the day. Donations were also collected by several groups to benefit the vic-tims of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. As darkness fell, strings of pretty paper lanterns were illuminated, rounding out the fun day with a magical touch. Though it was their first such event, the festival was a true success and the Rissho Kosei-kai is already planning to host this event on a bigger scale next year.

Japanese cosmetic trend ‘Sexy’Child-likelook-“Yaeba teeth”

World New Seven Wonders of Nature

Perfect teeth - white, straight and evenly aligned - may be the ideal in America, but that aesthetic is not for everyone.

Japanese women are going gaga for a crowded, crooked-toothed smile with accen-tuated canine teeth, known as the ‘yaeba’ look.

Popular at dentists in Tokyo, a cosmetic procedure to create the yaeba effect involves attaching non-permanent adhesive mini-fangs to canine teeth.

Yaeba, meaning ‘double tooth,’ is a sought-after treatment at Dental Salon Plaisir in Tokyu’s upmarket Ginza neighbourhood, where, perhaps in response to Twilight fans, Dr Kashiyama has been ‘pushing’ the $390 alteration.

Far from the usual blood-lusting connota-tions of vampires, the sharp-canined look is an attempt at making a smile more child-like, replicating the odd alignment of smiles that are affected by delayed baby teeth.

The look - frothed about on blogs, Face-book fan pages and on Japanese TV - is seen as adding a well-calculated dash of imperfection to a pretty face, adding to a woman’s desirability.

The trend follows the Western fondness of late for the gap-toothed smile - also a ‘young’ dental look.

Made popular by the likes of models Lara Stone, Georgia Jagger and Jessica Hart, the Madonna-style grin became a requested look at New York salons last year.

“Oshidori” Mandarin Ducks Flown to Gifu

Nissin Cup Noodles Robot for 40th Anniversary

~ Coloring the Japan’s winter scene ~

Support Asia Trend Magazine, Become our Advertiser!

Flocks of Oshidori have arrived to pass the winter time in Gifu and are entertaining wild-bird fans and walkers at the pond Matsuo-ike.

They started to show up early in October and now you can see about 40 ducks pecking at acorns and playing with each other in the pond.

The Oshidori breed in the north area of Japan and move southward during winter.

More chilly weather is expected to bring more Oshidori to the south area and you can enjoy this seasonal view until March.

How many of you are troubled that you are unable to accurately determine the cook-ing time for your instant cup noodle?

Cup Noodle is marking its 40th with a Robot Timer Present Campaign! The three minute robot timer is shaped like an ordi-nary Cup Noodle, but once you press the lid it transforms into the shape of a robot. It features LED lights for the elapsed time, and has the capability of telling you proverbs regarding food and trivial facts about Cup Noodle while you eat your own.

You get four chances to win one if you’re ever in Japan in the coming months: 10/16, 11/16, 12/16, 1/16, each date with 2,500 winners. All you have to do is get two stick-ers found on the 40th Anniversary edition Cup Noodle and send them over to the Cup Noodle headquarters. Good luck!

* The Oshidori is a medium-sized perching duck, closely related to the North American Wood Duck. The species mainly eat plants and seeds and may also add snails, insects and small fish to its diet. It repre-sents a life-time couple, unlike many other species of ducks, are regarded as a symbol of conjugal affection and fidelity.

CAI-SHEN: bringthewealthtoyourhouseIn Chinese religion, the popular god (or gods) of wealth, widely

believed to bestow on his devotees the riches carried about by his attendants. During the two-week New Year celebration, incense is burned in Cai Shen’s temple (especially on the fifth day of the first lunar month), and friends joyously exchange the traditional New Year greeting “May you become rich” (“Gongxi facai”). Cai Shen (財神) is the God of Wealth and Cai Shen Dao means the God of Wealth is coming.

On the eve of Chinese New Year, almost all the Chinese will pray and “invite” the God of Wealth to their house. This is done as Chinese believes the Cai Shen will bring them wealth and good luck throughout the year.

Lunar New Year Festival is the largest and the most celebrated holiday in Asia. The Lunar calendar determines the date of the New Year. This special calendar is also used in countries that have adopted or have been influenced by Chinese Han culture, notably the Koreans, Japa-nese and Vietnamese. We believe it is the time for renewal, family gatherings, eating rich foods and paying respect to your ancestors and elders.

Although Lunar New Year is not an official holiday in U.S., many local Asian organizations hold different large celebrations starting mid-January. Celebrations include parade, lion/ dragon dance, cultural dance, fireworks, and Chinese banquets. Asia Trend will feature many
