Hz. Muhammed (s.a.v) hakkında yazılm ış kasidelere na't denilirse de genellikle, hangi nazım şekliyle yazı lmış olursa olsun Hz. Muhammed (s.a.v)'i konu alan manzumelerin tümüne na't ad ı
verilmektedir. 2
Türk Edebiyatında, XIII. yüzyılda Karahanlılar döneminde Yusuf Has Hacib'in yazdığ ı Kutadgu Bilig (Saadet Veren Bilgi), Edib Ahmed Yükneki'nin Atabetü'I-Hakayık (Hakikatler Eşiği) ve Ahmed Yesevi'nin Divan-ı Hikmet adlı eserleri ilk na't örneklerindendiL Şai ri na't yazmaya sevk eden en önemli etken Hz. Muhammed (s.a.v)'e duyulan sonsuz sevgidir. Kur'an-ı Kerim' in birçok ayetinde Peygamber efendimiz övülmüştür.

Rivayetlere göre; kafile Medine'ye girerken Mescid-i Nebevi'nin minarelerinden sabah ezanı öncesi bu na'tın okunduğu duyulur. Peygamber Efendimiz, müezzinlere rüyalannda bu na'tı okumaların ı tavsiye etmiştir.4
Şairi na't yazmaya sevk eden diğer bir etken de Peygamberimizin şefaatine nail olma arzusudur. Hz. Peygamber Islam dinini tebliğ ettiğinde, pek çok kimse ona karşı çıkmıştı. islam'a sa l dıranlardan
biri de hakkında ölüm fermanı çıkan Ka'b bin Züheyr idi. Kardeşinin ikazı üzerine pişman olan Ka'b bin Züheyr Medine'ye geldi. Peygamber Efendimizin huzuruna çıkarak tövbe edip imana kavuşan bir kimsenin geçmiş hata larının bağışlanıp bağışlanmaya
cağını sordu. Hz. Peygamberin olumlu cevabından sonra Züheyr oğlu Ka'b olsa da mı? diyerek sorusunu tekrarladı. Hz. Peygamber yine tasdik edince kendisini tanıttı ve meşhur olan Banet su'ad olarak bilinen manzum kasidesini okumaya başl adı. Hz. Peygamber sı rtından hırkasını çıka rıp Ka'b bin Züheyr'e hediye ettiğinden5

Şair Ka'b bin Züheyr'in Hz. Peygamber'in af ve ihsanına nail olması diğer şairleri de na 'tl arı aracıl ı ğıyla şefaat talep etmelerine vesile olmuştur. Muhteva itibarıyla na'tlarda; Hz. Peygamber'in isim ve sıfatları, ka inatın efendisi, yaratılış gayesi ve Allah'ın habibi oluşu, örnek ahlakı, üstün vasıfları, fiziki özellikleri, mucizeleri, diğer peygamberlerden üstünlüğü ayet ve hadisiere dayanılarak dile getirilir ve son bölümlerde şa ir günahkarlığını itiraf edip şefaat talebinde bulunur. 6

THE OTTOMAN NA'T (EULOGY IN PRAISE OF THE PROPHETJ
TR ADITION
exically, the word na't means "to qualify, to express good and beautiful things in an exaggerated manner;
quality and attribute." In Arabic literature, laudatory poems are classified under the rubric of madh (praise).1
Although the term na't primari Iy reters to eulogies (qasida) written about the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.), in fact all sorts of poetic works about the Prophet are collectively known by this name.2
The established custom of beginning all religious, scientific, and literary works with hamdala (praising and giving thanks to God) and salwala (sending benedictions upon the soul of the Prophet) gradually gave way to the practice of also including a na't in the work. In collections of poems (diwan) and long poems composed of independently rhyming couplets (mathnawi/masnavi), the inclusion of a na't after the tawhid (poems about divine unity) and munajat (supplications to God) came to be regarded as essential.3
Among the earliest examples of na't in Turkish literature are Kudatgu Bilig (Knowledge that lmparts Happiness) written by Yusuf Has Hacib in the thirteenth century during the Karakhanid era; Atabetü'I-Hakayık (Threshold of Truths) by Edi b Ahmed YüknekT; and Dfvan-1 Hikmet (Diwan of Wisdom) by Ahmed YesevT.
The most important factor that lead poets to write na'ts was the infinite love they harbored for the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.). Many verses of the Qur'an praise the Prophet:
ındeed there has come unto you a Messenger from among yourselves, for whom what burdens you is grievous; full of concern for you, to the believers compassionate and merciful. (surah Tawba 9:128).
And we have not sent you but as mercy to the worlds. (surah Anbiya 21:107).
ındeed the re is for you, in the Messenger of God, a good example for him who looks unto God and the Last Day and who remembers God much. (surah Ahzab 33:21).
ındeed, you are of an exalted nature. (surah Qalam 68:4).

As the Ottoman poet Na bT was approaching Medina on his w ay to the Pilgrimage, he saw an official lying down with his feet turned towards the city, and this unseemly sight inspired the following couplet to pour forth from his lips:
Beware of abandaning propriety for this is the viiiage of the ıBe
loved of God lt is the object of the divine gaze, the station of the Chosen Oıne
lt is said that as the caravan was entering the city of Medina, Nabrs na't was heard being recited from the minarets of the Mosque of the Prophet just prior to the morning ca ll to prayer; the Prophet himself had instructed the mu'adhdhins in their dreams to recite it. 4
Another factor that encourages a poet to undertake to write a na't is the desire to be favored with the Prophet's intercession. When the Prophet Muhammad first set out on his mission to spread the message of ıslam, many people turned against hıim. One of those who attacked the new faith was Ka'b b. Zuhayr, who was therefore sentenced to death in absentia. Having been convinced by his brother to repent, Ka'b traveled to Medina. He appeared before the Prophet and asked him if a person who repented and found the faith would be forgiven for his past errors. The Prophet replied in the affirmative, so Ka'b asked "Even if that person were Ka'b b. Zuhayr?" The Prophet confirmed his earlier reply, upon which Ka'b introduced himself and began to recite his famous eulogy known as Banat Su'ad. The Prophet was so pleased that he took off his mantle and gave it to Ka'b b. Zuhayr,5
upon which the poem came to be known as Qasida al-Burda (Poem of the Mantle).
Referring to this episode, NabT wrote:
Since you have forgiven the sins of Ka'b ibn Zuhayr Make this sinner happy too with glad tidings of forgiveness
That Ka'b ibn Zuhayr was favored with the Prophet's forgiveness and benefaction induced other poets to plead for intercession through their na'ts. ın terms of content, na'ts deseribe the names and attributes of the Prophet, his being the master of the universe, the reason for which he was created and the fact that he was the beloved of God, his exemplary character and superior qualities, his physical attributes and the mirades he performed,

and his superiority over the other prophets, all based upon Qur'anic verses and hadiths (sayings, normative actions, and tacit approvals). At the end, the poet confesses that he isa sinner and pleads for the Prophet's intercession on his behalf.6
Thus, the Ottoman poet Ziya Pasha wrote:
Grant me intercession and succor, for, otherwise, my sins are so very many that However much ı must burn [in hell], that much ı do deserve, o Messenger of God
This guilt-ridden Ziya' s hopes are tied to you in both worlds ı ntercede, o Messenger of God; intercede, O Messenger of God
With Mawlana jalaluddin Rumi's na'ts in Persian and those of Yunus Emre in Turkish, this genre became an indispensible element of literature in Anatolia from the thirteenth century on. Among the thousands of examples in our literature, the foremost in terms of

fame and influence is Fuzuli's Su Kasidesi (Qasida on Water):

In conclusion, the tradition of eulogizing in works such as Na't, Mi'rajiyya (Book of the Holy Ascension), Muhammadiyya (Epic of Muhammed), Mawlid (works on his birth and life), Salat (Prayers and benedictions to the Prophet), Munajat, Tawhid, and Tasbih (Exalting the Lord)8 has historically occupied an important place in Ottoman music, literature, and culture. Na'ts have been collected in albums (nu'Ot mecmualan),9 and salary registers preserved in our archives record the existence of na't reciters (na'than) in dervish lodges, Mawlawi lodges, and mosques, indicaling that this function had virtually become a tull-fledged profession.10
