At the back of the Tea Rooms stands Derek Shaw’s magnificent 1:72 scale model of Jervaulx Abbey as it would have looked in about 1530. They offer a superb range of homemade cakes, sandwiches and light snacks washed down with good quality tea, coffee and cold drinks. Aysgarth Falls, the setting for ‘Robin Hood Prince of Thieves’, is a short walk away and Bolton Castle is an exhilarating 3 miles over the tops. It was at the Wheatsheaf in 1941 that James Herriot (Alf Wight) and his wife Helen spent their honeymoon. The Wyvill Arms has two bars, both with welcoming log fires for those cold winter’s days and nights, and the front bar also has a ‘bistro-like’ seating area offering a full range of food, from bar snacks to restaurant-style dishes. The Inn’s extensive 15 acre grounds continue along Hardraw Beck taking in the spectacular narrow gorge of Hardraw Scar. Around this pleasant paths wind through ancient woodland, crossing the Beck over oak footbridges. At the head of the gorge the impressive Hardraw Force, best seen after heavy rain, drops 100 feet from an overhanging ledge. 18 THE GEORGE INN The George Inn, Thoralby, Leyburn DL8 3SU T: 01969 663256 E: [email protected] W: www.thegeorge.tv This very quiet, traditional stone-built dales inn, dating from 1732, is full of character with a cosy, welcoming atmosphere. The walls are decorated with a miscellaneous collection of paintings, prints and artefacts collected from travels around the world. Hanging flower baskets, beams, collections of antiques, bric a brac, and sketches of the local villagers add to the delight. Set in pretty village amongst magnificent scenery, ideal location for touring the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. The Visitor Centre is the ideal destination for every fan of cheese, from seeing it made to savouring the finished product, it’s all here. Strolling through the museum is like taking a trip back in time, to when cheese-making evolved from a local product to the nationally loved icon of today. The Cross Keys is the only place you can sample a lovely pint of ‘Bellerby Bitter’! The menu alters slightly on a daily basis, depending upon which dishes we have cooked and there are 3 lovely, recently refurbished, en-suite letting rooms on offer, all themed differently. All their products are made on site in a converted farm building to house a fully equipped production area. All Raydale goods are made by hand. From topping strawberries to sticking on labels each stage of production is done by hand to ensure true excellence in finish. Finalist’s in Yorkshire’s Favourite Pub 2011, The Fox & Hounds Inn is a friendly and welcoming family-run pub, offering a range of fine cask conditioned ales including John Smith’s, Black Sheep and regular guest beers including those from the Yorkshire Dales Brewery and Salamander of Bradford, plus an excellent home cooked food menu using local produce. It’s one of a dying breed of pubs, being still very much a community centre for the village with a large proportion of residents regular customers (with some more regular than others!).

This former 18th century farmhouse in the Yorkshire Dales is now a well-established pub, hotel and restaurant. The Inn’s extensive 15 acre grounds continue along Hardraw Beck taking in the spectacular narrow gorge of Hardraw Scar. Around this pleasant paths wind through ancient woodland, crossing the Beck over oak footbridges. At the head of the gorge the impressive Hardraw Force, best seen after heavy rain, drops 100 feet from an overhanging ledge.

This very quiet, traditional stone-built dales inn, dating from 1732, is full of character with a cosy, welcoming atmosphere. The walls are decorated with a miscellaneous collection of paintings, prints and artefacts collected from travels around the world.
