Note from the Program Chair As you will see below, we have a tour of NASA’s Plum Brook Station scheduled for Saturday, September 10th. Unlike our previous visit there in May, 2012, this one comes with much greater uncertainty about what we will see. You can read on page 5 of 19 of this newsletter a Monday, January 4, 2016 Akron Beacon Journal article about the great things happening at Plum Brook these days. Exciting times! I scheduled this tour last Fall, when Plum Brook’s agenda was much less uncertain. Now, only a few weeks in front of our tour date, that uncertainty has come to the forefront. In fact, we cannot be certain of what we will see, right up until we show up there that morning. In an effort not to disappoint anyone, or at least not to misrepresent the situation, I have excerpted the following verbiage, “verbatim”, from an email I received from our Plum Brook host on August 8th: “Just to reiterate, test operations schedules at these large scale facilities are always fluctuating; on a day to day moment by moment basis the closer you get to the actual day of performing a test run. Whatever you put in the newsletter by way of description does not represent a commitment on our part as a deliverable. “Right now SPF is ‘all hands on deck’ trying to get the facility & special test equipment integrated. This means that shakedown tests are initiated at a moment’s notice. If the team at SPF gets to a point where they need to operate on that Saturday then they will operate which means that the large vacuum chamber would probably be off limits, for certain the shaker table and the acoustic chamber will be off limits. “The B2 facility will be integrating special test equipment into the facility vacuum chamber so that chamber will be off limits (effectively limiting the tour to the mezzanine level). If they are at the point where they have propellants on-site there will be no access to the facility other than the control building. “Your tour could be as mundane as only getting to view the control rooms through the observation windows to getting access to areas ancillary to the actual test chambers to maybe seeing the big vacuum chamber at SPF. I am waiting to hear back from the two facilities. “One security/logistics change is that there will be no cameras allowed in SPF. If we get access to areas that house the test article you will have to leave all cameras (including cell phones) in a locked box located immediately inside the entrance foyer.” So, there you have it: “you now know what I know”. I plan to proceed as follows: I will probably know more about what we will see, by the reservations deadline (Saturday, September 3rd, a week in advance). If you have any interest in attending, depending upon what we will see, please reserve, stating either “I will attend, depending upon what we will see” or “I will attend, regardless of what we will see”. For the latter folks, I will reserve you a spot immediately and confirm your reservation. For the former folks, I will hold you a spot tentatively, and send you an email only a few days before the event, letting you know “the latest” status of what we are expected to see, at that point in time. You can then quickly tell me “yes, I want to hold my reservation” or “no, I do not want to come”. Preference for the allotted spots in this tour will be given in this order: current Akron ASME members (student and/or professional section), to those responding “I will attend, regardless of what we will see” by the reservations deadline, and then “first come, first served”, up to the tour limit. Also, our tour host has asked that we “car pool”, to the maximum extent possible, either from Akron or “once we get on site” [i.e., “merge into fewer vehicles (with people you know, presumably!) once we arrive there”, since part of the tour will be driving from one part of the Station to another]. I am sorry there cannot be more certainty stated right now. But, surely, you can understand NASA’s position: they enjoy sharing with the public what they are doing, but only to the limits enforced on them by the projects underway there. Brent C. Sisler, P.E., Akron ASME Program Chair

UAkron ASME newsletter by email – make sure you get one! As you probably know by now, many years ago, due to cost considerations, Akron ASME had to stop mailing hardcopy newsletters.

UNew a few years ago and stopped as of this yearU: Please be ready for a change in the way you receive information from us. We had been using a GoDaddy server to send emails to our “members + friends” (they looked like “Express Email Marketing”). We are no longer doing that, for two reasons: 1) it was expensive and we can no longer afford it; and, 2) national ASME frowns on us using other than its listserv for communicating with our members. National ASME has not explicitly answered the issue of how a section communicates with its “friends” (i.e., “prospective members, ex-members, donors, and others interested in us”). I know they are hoping that, somehow, all the “friends” can be drawn in as (ASME) “members” eventually, but they haven’t offered us a communications “vehicle” to help make that happen. So, it becomes increasingly important that national ASME and we, in Akron, have a correct email address for you. If national has an incorrect email address for you, you will not be receiving my listserv messages. If those emails do not seem to be coming to you, please email me, Brent Sisler, at [email protected] with your correct email address. As members, you should be getting ASME listserv emails from Akron ASME announcing: 1) upcoming events; 2) updating of our Akron ASME website ( now moved to https://community.asme.org/akron_section/b/weblog/default.aspx ); and, 3) posting of our updated newsletter to that website as an Adobe Acrobat *.pdf for your viewing, printing, and/or download.

Please let me (Brent Sisler, 330/836-9238 or [email protected]) know, if you have comments, questions, or concerns.

UAkron ASME “speakers” needed in high schools

The Akron Section of ASME would like to begin a project to put engineers in contact with area high school students. A need that has been made known to us is that the amount of graduating high-school students going on to study science and engineering is down in the Akron area.

Akron ASME is attempting to develop a pool of engineers that would be willing and able to go to a school for anywhere from a half hour to a couple of hours, based on their schedule, and speak to high school classes. The format is anything from an informal talk with a science classroom to a PowerPoint presentation to a group of students enrolled in science classes. We have a new “What is a Mechanical Engineer?” brochure from national ASME that makes such a visit very easy for someone willing to go into the schools. We have hundreds of copies on hand, ready to give to you. We have it as a *.pdf, too, if you’d like to take a look.

If you would be interested in getting involved with this program and helping educate students about science and engineering fields, please contact Cara Adams at caraadams302 @ yahoo.com.

Thanks for considering it!

First I would like to thank all of you for your interest and support of our live CPD seminars over the past (9) years. It has been my pleasure and honor to get to know so many of you. Your attendance made it possible for us to deliver over 100 live CPD seminars for Ohio Registered Professional Engineers and Registered Land Surveyors. Over the past several years I have had a growing concern about the cost and time burden of live seminars. The cost of hotel space and facilities, printing, postage, refreshments and lunch etc. has grown dramatically in the past few years. I also understand the time and travel concerns and costs for those who are forced away from their jobs to attend the live presentations. So with all things considered, we are changing our seminar focus from live, in person presentations to live, synchronous webinars. What will this mean to you? Below are the brief highlights of what we are planning. As we announce webinars this fall, future Emails will clarify what you will need to do to sign on and “attend” an event. So don’t worry about absorbing all of this right now. It’s an overview and you will find it is not that complicated after you do your first sign in. Cost:

• We have cut the regular price by more than 50%

• Regular price was $32 per hour; will now be $15 per hour

• All participants will receive a free, first, 1 hour seminar each year

• The regular cost for 30 hours for the (2) year renewal cycle will be reduced from $960 to $420

• Obviously, other costs associated with attending live venues such as transportation and lost billable time or wages etc. will be eliminated

Page 11: ASME International Akron Sectioncommunity.asme.org/cfs-file.ashx/__key/telligent-evolution-components...Welcome to the 2016 Section of ASME! I would like to thank our past Chair, David

• Your cost for the webinars can be reduced even further based on your level of participation (Details follow)

• Registration:

Registration for webinars will be simple

• You will be notified periodically by Email of the topic, time, date and cost of upcoming webinars

• Simply reply to the Emails as to which webinars you wish to attend and you will be registered

• When registered, you will receive an Email confirmation with sign on instructions and periodic Email reminders as the webinar date and time approaches

• If you find you cannot attend the webinar, don’t fret! No cancellation is needed and there is no loss or penalty for not attending

Signing on to a webinar:

• You cannot sign on if you are not registered…you won’t have the sign on code

• Signing on will be as simple as replying to an Email or signing onto a website

• All devices will work (PC, laptops, tablets and even smartphones)

• For “hubs” (see below) and for engineers attending in a group, larger or multiple monitors and a sound system may be required

• As you sign on for the first free, one hour webinar, you will receive instructions from Zoom.Us on how to connect to the webinar session

Page 12: ASME International Akron Sectioncommunity.asme.org/cfs-file.ashx/__key/telligent-evolution-components...Welcome to the 2016 Section of ASME! I would like to thank our past Chair, David

• Subsequent webinar sign ins will be much quicker and simpler

• Audio only connections will not be allowed

• Attendees will be permitted to sign on within one hour of the start time of the webinars

• The free, one hour seminar offered each year will contain 1 PDH of creditable material (with verified attendance you will get a completion certificate) but the underlying purpose of the initial webinar is to get you comfortable with signing on and participating in future webinars

Seminar dates, times and hours:

• Seminars will be on varied days of the week including Saturdays

• Both daytime and evening hours will be offered

• Depending on topic, daytime seminars will be 1, 2, or 4 hours in length.

• Evening seminars will be 1 and 2 hours in length

• There will be adequate breaks between hours

• Break times are not credited. A 4 hour webinar will require 4 ½ clock hours of attendance

• Since there are no facilities to reserve and no printing needed, lead time from first announcement to first webinar offering date will be relatively short … about 2 weeks

• Historically we did few seminar dates in October and none in December. This year webinars will occur with shorter notice but will be repeated several times in each of the 4 final months of the year

Page 13: ASME International Akron Sectioncommunity.asme.org/cfs-file.ashx/__key/telligent-evolution-components...Welcome to the 2016 Section of ASME! I would like to thank our past Chair, David

• In 2017, a number of additional topics will be scheduled and all the 2016 topics will also be repeated. There will be several webinars offered in each month. Participants should have no trouble getting 30 CPD hours this renewal period

Live Participation:

• All live, synchronous seminars will allow two way communication between speakers/presenters and participants

• Participants are free to “raise hands” and ask questions or add comment during the course of the webinar

• Presenters/speakers will likewise ask questions of the participants to be sure points are made clear

Attendance Verification:

• State of Ohio recognizes live, synchronous webinars as the same as live in person instruction (Our webinars are not correspondence or self- paced instruction which are limited or disallowed: see Ohio rules at:http://www.peps.ohio.gov/ContinuingEd.aspx )

• State of Ohio requires attendance to be monitored and verified

• Your attendance will be monitored and verified at the beginning, at random times throughout and at the conclusion of each webinar

Successful Completion

• At the conclusion of each webinar you will be notified by Email that your attendance for the entire seminar has been verified and you can proceed to pay and receive your completion certificate

Page 14: ASME International Akron Sectioncommunity.asme.org/cfs-file.ashx/__key/telligent-evolution-components...Welcome to the 2016 Section of ASME! I would like to thank our past Chair, David

Non completion

• If you fail to sign on BEFORE the start time, you cannot attend the webinar. Wait for the next offering.

• If, for any reason you disconnect or leave the seminar BEFORE completion is declared, you cannot pay nor receive credit

• If you do not like the seminar, exit at any time. There is no cost or penalty

• If your complete attendance is not verified, you will not be not be notified

Payment

• When you are notified that you have successfully attended the webinar, you will receive payment instructions

• Do not pay for a webinar without being instructed to do so

Completion Certificates

• Upon verified attendance and receipt of payment, a completion certificate will be mailed to you without delay

Savings opportunities for speakers/presenters

• If you wish to be a presenter, speaker or panel member, the webinar will be free to you

• You don’t have to go anywhere to be a presenter or speaker … present from your home or office

• It is simple to switch audio source and screen control to and from speakers during the course of a webinar

• If you speak or present at repeated dates of the same topic webinars, other topic webinars will be available to you free of charge

• Speaking/presenting is an excellent way to spread your knowledge and experience to others. You can do a great service to the PE community in this way

Savings opportunities for “web hosts”

• Acting as a “web host” for other engineers who do not have suitable internet facilities available to them, will reduce your cost

• You can share your facilities and web abilities with others at your place of business, a local “community” room at a library or community center of even your residence if you like

• By being a web host you will be serving the PE community by helping others to attend webinars and you will be fostering networking and mentoring opportunities

• You can provide a valuable service to your social or societal organization by bringing speakers/presenters to them over the web

• Cost of the webinar(s) will be waived for web hosts so long as two or more paying attendees are involved and have verified attendance

• If interested, please contact me to discuss further

Savings opportunities for recruiting new webinar participants

• If you bring in a new participant, your next webinar and their first webinar will be free

• You can recruit up to 7 new participants if you like (you will get a free 4 PDH webinar for each new participant you recruit in the 2016-2017 cycle)

Page 16: ASME International Akron Sectioncommunity.asme.org/cfs-file.ashx/__key/telligent-evolution-components...Welcome to the 2016 Section of ASME! I would like to thank our past Chair, David

• We will consider any P.E. or P.S. that you "send" as a new participant if they have not attended one of our seminars in the 2014-2015 cycle

Networking and mentoring opportunities

• With leaner staffs and reduced company resources, networking has grown to be a vital component of a PE’s growth and knowledge base

• CPD (continuing professional development) cannot come without PEs sharing their knowledge and experiences

• We have nearly 600 PE’s in our contact base at this time. Such a valuable knowledge base should be available; especially to the younger engineers looking for mentors and experience etc.

• If you register for at least (1) webinar, you may have your networking information added to our published networking list

• All who register for at least (1) webinar will receive an Email copy of the networking roster as it is updated at each webinar date

• Only a phone number that you provide will be used in your contact information. No Email addresses will be published or shared

• We will make some “networking” time periods available at each webinar for those wishing to introduce themselves and their interests/specialties

• Those who wish to mentor or for those who wish to interact with mentors are encouraged to speak up during the networking periods

Groups, Society Meetings, Company or Industry Specific Seminars

Page 17: ASME International Akron Sectioncommunity.asme.org/cfs-file.ashx/__key/telligent-evolution-components...Welcome to the 2016 Section of ASME! I would like to thank our past Chair, David

• If you would like special seminars for your group membership meetings or company specific training or qualified CPD presentations, please contact me

We will continue to develop topic material and presentations as time goes by. Consistent with the spirit of Continuing Professional Development, we will include material that will be interesting and informative to a broad base of the PE community. The following topics are under development for the 2016-2017 renewal cycle. Please look them over. If you would like to speak or present on these topics, let me know and I will be in contact with you. Likewise, if you would like to see other topics included in a future webinar, let me know that as well. Topics under development

• Algorithms; Why, What and How

• Simulation and Modeling

• Critical Listening/Logical Speaking/Detecting Fallacies

• Embedded Processors/Introduction/Applications

• Cement/Concrete/Formed/Reinforced/Pre-stressed
