    ON THE COVER:

I like to talk about thingsI have seen and experi-enced that has realmeaning and this month Itook to a trip to Michigan.First going through the secu-rity at the airport is always a lotof fun ya sure. A woman in frontof me who cannot speak Englishwins a yellow card and it saysyou can keep your shoes on. Sheputs them in the basket anyway, she could not read the card. Then when I go through thescanner and walk out he sayswhat do you have in your pock-et? Well its my wallet. I did notput my wallet in the basket. Then they check me for gunpowder residue, frisk me andthen ran me up and down with awan.

Then he says take your stuffout of your bag and they foundan inch and a half folding knifethat I carry in my toiletries andhave for years. But the foreignwoman goes right on throughwithout a second look.

There was a young 30 or sowoman in a wheelchair who hadher tennis shoes removed and ittook her 5 minutes at least to putthem back on. She had cerebralpalsy or something like that andit was difficult for her to putthem on.

I said in a firm voice isnt thata little over the top? Two ofthese guys walk up and stare atme and I said you see these sun-glasses they were given to meby my son a Marine, these havebeen in Iraq and Afghanistanand we are a proud Americanfamily. But when you peopletreat a foreigner better than anAmerican it angers me for yourpolitical correctness.

You know I dont mind beingchecked out thats just the worldwe live in but when you let awoman who cant read or writeEnglish go through with a freepass thats wrong. And a littlehandicapped girl who is Ameri-

Canterbury Talesgrowth. When it did rain andwarmed up the underbrush wastall and the mushrooms werehard to find. Cathy and I hadtwo nice messes and I was gladto get them.

I had a half dozen opportuni-tys to shoot a Jake turkey but itwas too easy so I went six timeswith no luck for a Tom. Lookslike next year should be the yearfor big birds. Everyone thinksby being in the outdoor maga-zine business I get every oppor-tunity to hunt and shoot whatev-er I want. Well thats not thecase but I wish it was.

To give you a rundown of lastyears hunting it was the worstduck season I ever had. I did notshoot a deer or a Turkey anddove season was almost a bust. Ishot a few rabbits, no squirrelsbut did get some pheasants andsome grouse.

I have been fishing more andas I get older I am enjoying thewater much more. Dont get mewrong I will get ambitious onhunting next year. It doesntbother me if I am not up therewith my peers for I have filled asemi with game and fish overmy lifetime. I guess the point ofall this is you dont have to be agame hog to still enjoy the out-doors.

I was invited on a wonderfultrip to Traverse City in May; itwas a very interesting invitationfrom the Bosch diesel engine di-vision. They hosted a three dayfunction for 12 outdoor maga-zine writers to a real eye openeron the advancement of dieselengineering done by Bosch. Iwill have a complete reviewnext month of what this giant ofa company has done to make notjust quiet engines but everythingfrom fuel economy to longevityin diesel motors. I was morethan impressed by this new tech-nology and you will be too.

By the way they are tearing upthe mushrooms in northernMichigan.

Illinois mushroom season wasstrange to say the least. Dry andcold with spirts of rain but nev-er getting the warm nightswhich is the secret to mushroom

Catfish Wrap with Avocado & Tomato Salsa

How you cook the fish is your call, but I prefer the smoky flavor of grilledfish. However you decide to cook it,just dont cook it too long! Thecoleslaw makes it cool, creamy andcrunchy. The biggest tortillas you canfind work best. If all you can locate aresmaller ones, allow two per person andgo easy on the stuffing. Serving Size: 41 1/2 pounds catfish fillets 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon lemon pepper 1 lemon, juice only 1 lime, juice only 2 cups prepared coleslaw (I like thecreamy kind) Hot sauce, Tabasco, Franks Red Hot,etc. 1 cup shredded cheddar and Jackcheeses

    4 large warm flour tortillas

Avocado and Tomato Salsa 2 ripe, but firm avocados, peeled anddiced 2 limes, juice only 1 cup cherry or pear tomatoes, halvedand drained (toss gently in a colander) 1/4 cup red onion, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves, chopped

can and does speak English hasto take her shoes off. The little girlin the wheel chair should have hadthe pass. Something wrong withthis picture if you know what Imean.

Another interesting story aboutthe trip. I was on a layover inChicago coming back from mytrip in Michigan with Bosch. I hada great hamburger at the CUBSrestaurant and wasted as muchtime as I could.

When waiting at G18 gate forPeoria I noticed a big muscled guyabout 63 with a little shiatsu dogwearing a bow in her hair. I could-nt figure out what that was allabout. First dogs cannot fly unlessthey are a service dog. And whatwas this big guy doing with a littledog. Well surprising to me he setright next to me on the puddlejumper we were on. We started upa conversation and I asked whatkind of service dog she was, hesaid she was so sensitive that shecan detect if he is having a PTSD

attack coming onbefore he goesinto one. So hecan then takesome medicine.

He said he was aMarine in Reconin Iraq andAfghanistan onmany tours.Everywhere fromBosnia to anyplace in the world. But the straw thatbroke the camelsback was while inAfghanistan hewas shot in the leftshoulder frombehind, 3 inchesfrom his head by asniper. He had a real problemdealing with the war in generaland decided it was time to changehis life. This little dog has been alife saver.

I sat with this Patriot for only ahalf hour flight from Chicago toPeoria but it reminded me of whatthis crazy war was all about. Its

about this newgeneration ofPatriots that needour support andlove. It shows allof us just howtrauma can affecteveryone.

God love them, they are why weare free. I offeredhim a ride to hismothers but saidshe will be there topick him up. Igave him a pat onthe back and saidgood luck. Iwalked away withtears in my eyes. These young men

should be honored because theyare why we are here period.

I guess I am in more tuned thanmost, our son is a combat Marineand we understand how things go.

It is becoming a strange worldwe live in. We cannot hate ourenemy even though they hate us.They have killed and woundedover 60 thousand and have scarredmentally 10s of thousands. Thereare 15 to 20 suicides a day from

our veteran population. Let alonethe 3000 + killed on 9-11. Butsociety as a whole condemns youif you speak harshly of these para-sites. We are supposed to roll overand do nothing.

Over 100,000 Muslims immi-grate to the US every year. Somefor refugee status and some whoare supposed to go to school butdisappear into thin air. Then theGovernment wonders why theyare killing us here at home. MoreMuslims come to America thanChristians but remember Obamasaid we are no longer a Christiannation. If we dont stand up forwhat we believe and protect thefreedoms that were paid for withAmerican blood over 200 yearsthen we wont have to worry aboutbeing a Christian nation or being anation at all.

Now I am going fishing down atthe farm the crappies are bitingand the blue gills are spawning thebass are hitting too. Be sure to getout and go fishing; take someonewith you. Have a wonderful Juneand be careful out there.

Keep your powder dry and yourworm wet.

Bruce and I motored out to Forest Park Nature Center this week to join a small group of people to check out the early flowers of spring.Say what? Usually we are looking for Bison, ice plungers or re-enactors but there we were. We met a Naturalist there and off we wentaccompanied by a few little girls and a couple of very nice ladies.

Our guide was a very energetic and knowledgeable young Naturalist named Kelsey Ernst. The truth is I have every weed and wild flowertangled in my own yard, but Forest Park is a 540 acre paradise with seven miles of trails. The place is open year round, housing a lot ofturkeys, deer, birds and varmints of all kinds.

I was very interested in Kelsey and after our short walk we sat down and talked a bit. I asked her how she got to be a Naturalist, and forher it started very early in her life. She went to Dunlap High school and her college classes centered on science and forestry among othercomplicated subjects. She had volunteered all her young life and nowfinally she was exactly where she wanted to be. There are four Naturalists working at the Park which is an all season job. They entertain people from all over the area that come to the parkto unwind, exercise and commune with the wonderful gift of nature. Kelsey carries a lot of safety devices and I kidded her about lookingout for an old man such as me. She assured me that I was in good hands, and I believed everything she told me. I have rarely met a personlike Kelsey, a young lady that loves her job and wishes to stay precisely where she is, guiding people, teaching them, and making them feelright at home in the woodsnaturally that is.

They cater to everyone from solo visitors to large groups and do a tremendous job in educating Home-Schooled children. Kelsey toldme that they have all kinds of things going on year round including photo contests, guest Naturalists, birthday parties, Halloween nightwalks, and special events during the year. Get in touch with the folks out at the park on line at peoriaparks.org/forestpark-nature-center.Tell em Bruce and Norm sent you and maybe they will introduce you to a turkey or two. I will let Bruce tell you more of this incredibleplace by his wonderful photographs. Contact Forest Park Nature Center at: 309-686-3360.

"clean up" language to correct problems with the concealedcarry law. All of these corrections will appear in one bill. This bill could emerge at any moment. Stay tuned.

On Mother's Day Sunday, for a second time in two weeks,a woman was attacked and raped on a Chicago elevated train.Of course, we are told we are all safer because we can't carryon mass transit. Concealed Carry has lowered crimerates except where there are gun free zones. Masstransit is one of those places. Each day thousands ofvulnerable people board mass transit systemsbecause they have no choice. We need to give them achoice that would allow them to protect themselvesinstead of making mass transit systems a free smor-gasbord for criminals.

The one bright spot in the unfavorable ruling by the SeventhCircuit Court of Appeals in the Friedman v. City of Highland Park casecame in the dissenting opinion written by Judge Manion. JudgeManion pointed out that "the right to self-defense is largely mean-ingless if it does not include the right to choose the most effectivemeans of defending one's self." If you recall the majority found theHighland Park ordinance constitutional because it "may increase thepublic's sense of safety." The majority opinion was a "feel good" rul-ing not based on law. We are facing a lot more of these types of opin-ions because of the restless propaganda being put out by Bloombergand others regarding firearms and the people who own them. So notonly do we have to fight the legal battles, but the disinformation cam-paigns of the anti-gunners - a very expensive process. This is whyincreasing ISRA membership and donations are so important.

Each week I get questions about what has happened to all of the.22 long rifle ammunition. Most of the callers are looking at somevast left-wing government conspiracy as the cause. The cause is a lotmore complicated and far reaching than that.

In 2001, gun owners were happy. We had survived the Clintonyears and a pro-gun Republican George Bush had just been electedPresident. What could possibly go wrong? The answer soon came. Itwas known as September 11, 2001. In the following months andyears, events have shown that the government can't or won't takecare of you. Events such as Hurricane Katrina followed and peoplewere left to protect themselves from looters and sometimes theirlocal government. John Lott started analyzing crime and firearms; hediscovered "More Guns, Less Crime."

The number of states passing concealed carry legislation began torise and as it did, crime began to decline. Stories about people whohad defended themselves against socially conceived and engineered

As you may have heard the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP)may soon be offering 1911a1 pistols to civilians who are members of aCMP affiliated organization. The Illinois State Rifle Association(ISRA) is an affiliated organization. This is an amendment to theNational Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This amendment wouldallow the approximately 100,000 1911a1's to be transferred to theCMP.

The Obama Administration opposes the sale of these historicfirearms to qualified members of the public. I advise calling yourCongressmen and Senators and ask them to support the amendmentthat would allow the firearms to be transferred to the CMP.

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) scored another victoryin the Wrenn v. District of Columbia right to carry case. The casecalled into the section of the Washington D.C. ordinance whichrequired a "good reason/proper reason" to obtain a concealed carrypermit. Judge Frederick J. Scullin issued a preliminary injunctionagainst Washington D.C. requiring that section of the ordinance. TheSAF will try for a permanent injunction. This case has the possibilityof going to the Supreme Court of the US.

Speaking of the US Supreme Court, the ISRA was part of amicusthat argued the "ownership v. constructive possession" issue in acase where a citizen that was convicted of a crime was denied theright to have his firearms transferred to a third party (the firearmshad not been part of the offense). In Henderson v. US, the USSupreme Court held that an individual's right of ownership gives himthe right to transfer his firearms after the conviction. The govern-ment had argued that he supposedly had "constructive possession"after the transfer.

As you can see we are still active in the courts and we will be forthe rest of time. In Springfield we have been working on a variety of

scum began to appear. Young people have always loved to shoot. Children and

their parents have rediscovered how much fun shooting is -besides, you don't have to be 7'3" and weigh 400 pounds to

be successful. Youth shooting groups are springing up every-where, so much so that Federal Cartridge Company has to

set aside large amounts of .22 ammunition and shot-gun shells just to meet the needs of these youth

camps. Many women soon realized that shooting is a fun

family sport. Women also discovered they coulddefend themselves and women's shooting programsstarted popping up all over the United States.

Crime and firearm accidents are dropping, eventhough there are more guns, more gun owners, more shooting

activities, and more young people shooting. Each day in the UnitedStates there are more gun owners and citizens wanting to practiceshooting. There are many more people who understand that they willhave to protect themselves, their families, each other and our coun-try.

In the last 14 years ideas about gun ownership have changed. Notonly is there an increase in gun owners, those gun owners want toshoot more. Since 2005, over 5 million women have purchasedfirearms and have been involved in the shooting sports. So, as far asthe original question, "Where has all of the .22 ammunition gone?"The answer is that millions of people are exercising their SecondAmendment rights. I don't see this stopping any time soon. Everyround of .22 that is produced is being purchased and used not only byold shooters, but millions of new shooters also. Some ammunitioncompanies originally thought the desire for this ammunition wouldsubside; this is obviously not the case. I expect .22 and other ammu-nition production to increase. It will probably be in fall or winterbefore we see much of it on the shelves. It will not be like it was sev-eral years ago. Although it is somewhat aggravating, it is a happyproblem in the long run.

I keep reminding everyone that the terrorists are not that far away;in fact they may be right next door! The terrorist attack in Garland,Texas brings that point home. Even more interesting is the Illinoisconnection related to the attack. Elton Simpson, one of the attack-ers, was born in Illinois and lived in Downers Grove and Westmont,Illinois. Not only must we keep a watchful eye on what is going onaround us but we should be ready to act, if necessary.

  • IN OLD PEORIA

I was born here in Peoria in 1932and thought that I would tell youwhat was going on here in our oldRiver City. Prohibition was stillgoing on, but by now it was oldhat, and our soft drink parlors wereall most nonexistent. Through thethirteen years of Prohibition Peoriamanaged to have all the whiskeythey could possibly drink. TheGreat Depression was hurtingmany Peorians and life was notvery easy here for some people. However, some folks made a lot ofmoney during Prohibition and thedepression so I called these twothings the Destructive Duo.

When I was born I was the ninthchild, wow, can you imagine that? How we got fed and housed is stilla mystery to me. The good news, or

rumor, or just plain hope was the FDRwould repeal Prohibition and ourmighty distilleries and brewerieswould open up and bring jobs back toPeoria, Illinois. History soon re-vealed that to be true. By 1935 HiramWalker opened the largest distillery inthe world here, and we were on ourway back to the top. The jobs thebuilding of that distillery created waslike a gift from Heaven, I can assureyou of that.

The local taverns were mostly outof the Soft Drink Parlor business andbeginning to come to life as saloonsand taverns. By April of 1933 theywere open and by December of 1933whiskey was being made and soldhere just like in the Good Old Days.Peoria was back on top and sincegambling had gotten a very stronghold on downtown Peoria, Illinois, es-pecially during Prohibition. It became muchmore entrenched in our local culture and ofcourse grew as money began to jingle in a lot ofpockets with the new jobs in the revised and re-vitalized booze business.

In early 1930 Peoria had a rash of kidnappings, mainly of rich gambling guys, but gangsters al-so kidnapped Dr. Parker who was a Peoria den-tist, and not a very wealthy one at all. His disap-pearance upset a lot of Peorians because of hisoccupation, you know, a dentist. We were used totrouble between the gamblers and the thugs, butthe professional men and women had been prettysafe throughout our history.

Kidnappings and bombings andthreats of violence belongedamong the local hoodlums. Thekidnappers kept the good doctorfor 18 days and all during thattime the folks in Peoria were talk-ing about Dr. Parker and expect-ing him to Turn up dead ordrowned in the river. Not true:he simply walked back homeacross the bridge from East Peoriato Peoria. Later a jury convicted12 people, including some familymembers and most of them fromEast Peoria, Illinois. A few ofthem were sentenced to 45 years. It sure put a dent in the myth thatgangsters were behind all the Peo-ria kidnappings.

Radio was our saving grace herein Peoria, Illinois with so manygreat shows, including comedy, mystery and a lot of folks likeGeorge and Gracie Allen and Peo-rians Fibber McGee and Mollyand Charles Correll. All thosefolks became household nameslater on in their careers.

Music kept a lot of Peorians go-ing, and dancing was very popular

President Hoover makes a stophere in Peoria and thousandsrushed down to greet him. All thehopes, prayers and rumors helpedRoosevelt become President and itlooks like most of Peoria rejoicesin that fact. They are certain thatFDR will appeal Prohibition.

They were right and in April1932 beer is the first to get back in-to production, less alcohol, but ithelps and by December of 1933good old Peoria whiskey is back.Hiram Walker announced that theywill build the largest distillery herein Peoria and on July 4, 1935,70,000 people visited the OpenHouse and Peoria, Illinois is backon its feet once again.

In 1932 Bradley Park is openedand soon Bradley Golf Course isnamed Newman Golf Course. Overon Sheridan Road they were build-ing Buehler Home and life wasgood here in good old Peoria, Illi-nois. I stayed in diapers from April24, 1932, until WW2 began, butthat is a different story for anothertime.

Over a onemonth period Peorians are scaredto death of bombs that have beengoing off around town. The sherifftells folks that it is Just a scaretactic among gamblers and localthugs and no one will be injured. He was right.

Income Tax passed in Illinoishere in October of 1932 and ofcourse folks griped to high heaven, but the truth is that very few peoplehad a job that paid them enough toworry very much about incometaxes.

Open cars andtouring cars were in and you couldbuy a Hupmobile for $795.00.

Chief Coy a local celebrity andstrongman entertained the folksdowntown by pulling automobilesalong the streets by his teeth andtearing thick telephones books inhalf with his bare hands. The An-nual Fall Festival was in Peoria and

an estimated 60,000 people attend-ed the festivities.

The unfinished Cedar StreetBridge is attracting folks with sui-cide on their minds and is dubbedLovers Leap. There are somefolks in town that are very de-pressed, jobless and with littlehope. Here is just a sample of onethat the local newspapers wroteabout a man that shot himself todeath. Mr. Allen left a note tellingfolks that he was just tired of theway things were going here intown.

Once spring has passed and the summer sun warms the water the fish will move from their shallow spawning ar-eas and become scattered out in the deeper water. The warm temperatures also bring vegetation along the shore-line which can make bank fishing difficult. Once this has happened the best way to fish Lake Victoria is by a smallboat of some sort. This can consist of a small john boat, canoe/kayak or a fishing tube/raft. There isnt a boatramp or vehicle access at the lake so it is a necessity to have a dolly system rigged up on your boat to make gettingit to the lake easier. Once the boat is launched in the water, it is an easy lake to fish by boat due to its shape andsize.

I use another simple rig for fishing this time of year. I use a 1/16 or 1/8 ounce feather jig that is tipped with awax worm on light four pound test line. I prefer using a heavier jig such as the 1/8 ounce so that the bait can quick-ly get down to the fishs strike zone. In the summer the water is usually not as clear as in the spring, so I prefer touse darker colored jigs such as blue, purple or black. When selecting a feathered jig to use it is important to makesure that the jig has been tied with red thread. The red thread mimics the gills of a baitfish and entices strikes fromhungry crappie. Jigs such as twister tails and tube jigs also work well as a second option if you dont have feath-ered jigs on hand. The type of jig that is used is not nearly as important as is the way the jig is presented. Using asmall boat and drift fishing through key areas of the lake is by far the best way to catch numerous large fish. Forthis method it is best to have a light breeze so that you can use the wind to move the boat. I look for certain areasthat will hold fish such as points and ledges. I also try to drift past submerged logs and beaver dams tend to holdnumbers of crappie as well. It is not necessary to cast the jig out from the boat, but merely drop it over the side andoccasionally work the rod while drifting to entice strikes. I have caught multiple thirteen inch or larger crappie us-ing this method. It is important to use caution when landing such large crappie because the hook can easily tear outof their mouths and you will be empty handed and cursing yourself for years to come.

Crappie and sunfish are not the only fish that are eager to jump on your hook at Lake Victoria. There are nu-merous largemouth bass hunting their prey along the weed edges. Spinners and top water lures work well, but mygo to bait of choice is a soft plastic Senko worm rigged wacky style. There are also catfish that lurk in these watersthat can be caught using stink bait.

I hope you can make it out to Lake Victoria and make as many great memories out on the water as I have. Goodluck and may your freezer always be full with tasty fillets!

Large Panfish Name of the Game at Lake Victoria By Brandon BleuerI have been pursuing crappie and bluegill in every lake, pond, marsh and strip mine in the Midwest since I was a

young boy. This obsession has given me a wealth of first-hand experience and knowledge on how to catch crappie andbluegill in a variety of situations. Any small farm pond can provide anglers with hours of entertainment catchingsmall bluegill. These ponds are just fine if youre introducing a child or someone new to the angling lifestyle, but if youwant to catch truly large panfish you will have to get off the beaten trail.

One such location that can provide hours of line stretching fun with large bluegill and crappie is Lake Victoria. LakeVictoria is hidden away in the Snakeden Hollow State Fish and Wildlife Area. According to the Illinois DNR, the siteconsists of 2,497 acres that contain more than three dozen lakes and ponds that are actively managed as fisheries. The site was mined for coal from 1962 to 1970, which created all of the lakes and ponds that provide quality fishing.Besides offering excellent opportunities to fill the freezer with crappie and bluegill fillets, Snakeden Hollow offersbeautiful scenery in the form of rolling hills, prairies and scattered pockets of timber.

Lake Victoria is located only a couple of miles outside of the town of Victoria and it is easy to find by following Coun-ty Road No. 15 until you see the second parking area. Once you arrive at the designated parking area I hope youreready to catch some fish! It is an easy walk down a gravel roadway to get to the lake and once youre down there, LakeVictoria will be the body of water on your right. A lot of people take advantage of the easy access fishing spots thatare located just off of the roadway, but it is well worth the extra effort to fish some of the spots further down the lake.

I have used various methods and tactics to fish this lake. In the spring around spawning season some of the bestfishing can be done from the shoreline. This is especially the case when targeting big bluegill and redear sunfish. Onereason that I like fishing from the shoreline in the spring is that the water is very clear, as is the case in most stripmine lakes, and shore fishing allows the angler to approach the fish and cast without spooking them. The rig forspring fishing is an easy one that Im sure every angler has used a time or two. I like to rig up a slip bobber with a no.6 hook and split shot or two for weight. It is important to use a small bobber and just enough weight so that the fishcan easily pull the bobber under without much resistance. You will want to experiment with different bobber sizes andweights until you find a combination that works for you. My bait of choice on this rig is a red worm, and you can alsouse minnows when fishing for spring time crappie. I usually adjust the slip bobber rig so that the bait is positionedapproximately four to five feet deep in the water.

When Im targeting spring time sunfish I look for submerged weed beds and drop offs that will consistently holdfish. I fish my bait just above the weed beds so that the fish can come out and feed on the bait. One thing to remem-ber when using this method is that Lake Victoria is a strip mine pit, so it has steep drop offs close to shore whichmeans that you dont always need to cast out towards the middle of the lake to catch fish. I have caught a lot of fishby casting my bait just a few feet from the shore. In some places on the lake it is possible to cast over to the otherside so that the bait is positioned close to the shore and weed beds. This method helps the angler to not spook shy fishin clear water. I used this method last spring to fill my freezer with multiple meals of large sunfish and I even pulleda 12 inch redear sunfish out of the lake.

As most of you may or may notknow I have only lived in this areafor a bit over two years. My wifeNancy and I love the region and weare still finding new and excitingthings to do around here. RecentlyI was invited to a shooting eventnear Pawnee. As I left that place Icould not wait to share the news ofthis spot with my readers.

Ralli Mottar, a local law enforce-ment officer, owns and operatesWE THE PEOPLE ALLIANCE,LLC just west of Pawnee. His fa-cility is second-to-none in central-Illinois and is one of the finest suchshooting establishments I haveever used. Half of Mottars com-plex is a well-stocked gun shopspecializing in handguns. Thisportion of the building also housesan amazing handgun shooting sim-ulator.

This device is about as realisticas it gets for non-live-fire shooting.Ralli can program the simulator forseveral different kinds of target

practice. You can practice solo orhe can set it up so that your prac-tice can be competitive. Eitherway it is a blast. (No pun intended)I was there as part of a 12-persongroup. I can tell you that if youand your friends like to shoot, thisis the most fun you can have with-out burning-up hundreds of dollarsin ammo. Rallis video machinecan also be set-up to simulate manydifferent real-life scenarios whereyou must decide whether to shootand when to defend yourself. Afteryou fire the scene is replayed andinstruction is given as to your per-formance. Self-defense is at thecore of everything that goes onthere and Ralli Mottar is an accom-plished instructor.

The other half of this facility isan actual indoor live-fire handgunrange. If the smell of gun powderis more interesting to you that thesimulator then this is the place foryou, too. Ammo is available onsite and the fees are very reason-

able.So now let me give you some in-

fo to answer some obvious ques-tions. It goes without saying thatno FOID card is needed for thesimulator. However, if you wish toshoot on the live-fire range youmust either have a FOID card or beaccompanied by a FOID card hold-er.

Memberships for the entire facil-ity are available to help save yousome money. Members can bringguests a couple times withoutmemberships. This allows wivesand/or kids to come to see howmuch fun they can have here.

The live-fire range and retail salesshop is open Thursday through Sat-urday from noon to 7 p.m. Thesimulator is by appointment onlyduring closed hours of the store. Itis noteworthy that this simulator isthe only one of its kind in this areaopen to the public. The FBI bought64 such units for their private use.My very best advice is for you togive Ralli Mottar a call at 217-652-9962 and get the info you need togo there and check-out this amaz-ing shooters honey hole. You canalso go to his website at www.wt-pa.us. You will be very glad youdid and I might just see ya there.

20 ADVENTURE SPORTS OUTDOORS THE VOICE OF THE AMERICAN SPORTSMAN May 2015

Whatll They Do With My?Last month Harry Canterbury began his

woeful journey into his senior citizenshipby lamenting the fact that he collected waytoo much stuff in the course of his outdoorlife. As he editorializes the status of hisdecoys, guns and fishing gear he triggers insome of us, our own mental inventory ofsuch accumulations.

Now if we were true stewards of oursports during our lives we have taught thegenerations that follow an appreciation ofour own interests. Kids, grandkids evenneighbors have hopefully been mentoredby us with skills and a mindset that willcarry them thru a life of enjoyment with amyriad of outdoor activities that you pro-vided. Ormaybe just one.

Lets say you did not mentor the nextgeneration of outdoor gurus, and you haveyour great grampss Henry rifle that wasused in the battle of Bull Run. Thats a no

brainer. You have it mounted in a walnutshadow box with forest green burlap back-ground and give it to your favorite personin the world (hopefully a family memberor make it a floating heirloom, takingturns being able to display it.)

Historic or sentimental pieces aside, what do you do with the stuff that hasnames like Curado, 1187, Shimano, UglyStick, Duck Commander etc. etc. etc.?Here is the unsavory scenario; your kid,the geeky one, takes all your belovedsh_t, because he or she can and puts inthe basement until the next garage sale andwill get five cents on the dollar for sh_t youworked youre ass off for. Orthere is anestate auction where some dude that youcouldnt stand when you were alive andkicking buys your st for little to nothing

and does hand springs thru your front yardknowing that he stuck it in your bucketone last time. You are hovering over theauction site cursing your offspring andregretting the abuse of your st. What arevolting development! Youre dead, andsome meathead has your st! You pleadwith St. Pete to let you go back for just acouple of minutes.

Thatdont happen. What do we do tokeep from agonizing for all eternity overthe batardization of all you st. Well (asRoald Regan would say) Im gonna tell ya.Ill use myself as the example. First you askyourself whatyou care pas-s i o n a t e l yabout. Obviously

there will be some legal preparation for thetransfer of firearms but any other gear, clothing and accessories is a matter of mak-ing the contact with the right folks withyour favorite organization either before youcash in or put it in you will. You know thatyou will hover over a disabled Vet that isfishing with your favorite rig and appreci-ate the fact that your st is still makingsomeone happy.

more and more Americans are wak-ing up to our we the people responsi-bilities to take this country back, theNRA is growing, and the presidentsspokespeople are still too stupid tosee how everybody is catching on totheir deceitful, manipulative spin.!

I don't need to be in the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame, I'm already in theAmerican We the People Hall ofFame and having the time of my life.

Sportsmen Urged To Take Precautions Against TicksGVO Staf f GrandviewOutdoors.com

Ticks are no laughing matter. Chances are if you've ever spent much time outdoorsyou've found one or two or three attached to you. Besides being a pain to remove theycan cause serious and sometimes fatal reactions. Thanks to The Kansas Departmentof Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourismfor providing a few tips to help make your outdoor adventures tick free.

Dress Appropriately - Wear protective clothing when practical (long sleeves andpants). Clothing should be light-colored to make ticks more visible. When hiking, weara long-sleeved shirt tucked into pants, long pants tucked into high socks and over-the-ankle shoes to keep ticks out. Products containing permethrin, which kills ticksrather than merely repelling them, can be applied to clothing and equipment but notdirectly to skin. Garments must be allowed to dry thoroughly before wearing. Clothingand tents pre-treated with permethrin are available, and the protection can remainactive through several washings. Be sure to follow label directions.

Use DEET and Insect Repellents - Insect repellents also reduce the risk of being bit-ten. When outdoors, use insect repellant containing 20 percent to 30 percent DEET on exposed skin and clothing for protection that lasts up to sev-eral hours. Follow the directions on the label. Other repellents registered by the Environmental Protection Agency can be found athttp://cfpub.epa.gov/oppref/insect/.

Places To Avoid - Ticks are usually found on vegetation close to the ground. In addition to regular mowing, avoid wooded or bushy areas with tallgrass and leaf litter and walk in the center of trails.

Frequent Self Checks - Check yourself at least every two hours for ticks when outside for extended periods of time. Pay special attention to ar-eas in and around your hair, ears, armpits, groin, navel and backs of the knees. Promptly remove a tick if one is found. The sooner a tick is removed, the less chance it will transmit a disease to its host. If you find a tick, grasp the tick with tweezers as close to the skin as possible and slowly pull itstraight out. Do not crush or puncture the tick and try to avoid touching the tick with your bare hands. Thoroughly disinfect the bite area and washyour hands immediately after removal. Be sure to also examine pets and gear, as ticks can ride into the home on animals, coats, backpacks and blan-kets, etc.

Symptoms of tickborne dis-ease can include any unusualrash and unexplained flu-likesymptoms, including fever, se-vere headaches, body achesand dizziness. Prompt treat-ment with antibiotics can pre-vent serious illness or evendeath. See your doctor imme-diately if you have been bittenby a tick and experience any ofthese symptoms.
