with a car load of cheeseand little meat. Betteroff to buy a cheesestick and microwave it.Honestly guys and galsCaseys or Monicals ismuch better. Just a note if yougo to the windy city and plan oneating the famous deep dishChicago Pizza dont.

It had to happen and whilewere talking about Chicagothere has been 3 incidents thathave been brought to light. Firstone a man came home saw twomen in between his house with agun. He fired twice and theyran. Another guy tried to help acop where a guy took $44,000 iniPhones. One other who acted inthe defense of others andstopped a potential mass mur-der. An UBER driver accordingto the Chicago Tribune waswatching a group of people walkin front of his car on North Mil-waukee Ave. Just before mid-night when 22 year old EverardoCustodio began firing into thecrowd. The Uber driver pulledhis own gun and fired six shotsat him wounding him in the low-er back, shin and the thigh.Cathy has story on page 58.

I have a feeling that this is thebeginning of the end for a lot ofcriminal activity especiallyChicago. My hats off to theselifesaving Patriots who have putthe fear of God into these para-sites. They should beware be-cause they dont know who isarmed and who is not. Thatswhat this country is all aboutand that is the right to defendthe innocent and defend onesself. By the way I have been toldCustodio was said to be an ille-gal. No big surprise there.

I carry a 9 mil Ruger LC9 se-mi auto or a 380 Beretta. Theyare both lite in weight and havea good punch when you need it.If you want to find the right gunfor the right application we havea number of gun shops that

Canterbury Talesvery nice show. A great auctiondone by Guyette and Deeter thepeople who know decoys andhave been selling these greatworks of art since 1984. Lastyear 2 decoys one a Goose andanother a Mason wood duckbrought around a million dol-lars. Of course that is a lot ofmoney but there are manypieces that are not out of reachto the average collector. Its al-ways interesting to see the cur-rent artists that are keeping thisonly original American antiquealive. And of course talking tosome of the eccentric expertsthat have been around since Lin-coln was a baby. It is all in funand I really appreciate the workof the hundreds of decoy makersfrom around the country. If youever would like to spend 2 daysat a nice resort and see some re-al American folk art you need togo to this annual event heldevery year in April at St CharlesIllinois. MidwestDecoy.org

Just a comment about the tripand that is the over rated Chica-go Pizza. That deep dish pizza isone of the most over ratedthings I have ever eaten in mylife. Its ok but I was expectingthis over the top taste after allthe hype I have heard aboutChicago pizza. It is thick dough

This spring has beena cold dry one. It was warm fora while but when it was warm itwas dry as a bone. There havebeen a few mushrooms foundbut not many. I could have shota Jake bird a couple of times buthave chosen to suffer and try toget a big Tom. The season isstill plugging along and I willgive it the best I got. Spicy Stuffed WildTurkey Breast

While living in Arizona during themid to late 70s, I developed a taste, more like a craving, for Southwesternflavors. I like it spicy, but not so hotthat my eyes water. Some folks canenjoy a habanero pepper or two. Imnot one of them.

To butterfly each breast half, place iton a flat surface, press down slightlywith the palm of your left hand (ifyoure right-handed)keep your fin-gers up and away from the knifebladeslice through the breastbetween your palm and the table alongthe long edge, but not all of the waythrough. The idea is to make a hinge sothat you can open the breast up like abook.

Ingredients4 wild turkey breast halves, bonelessand skinless, butterflied salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 1/2 cups jack cheese 1/2 red onion, diced 2 limes, juice only 4 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs (orcornmeal stuffing my favorite) 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finelydiced

would be more than happy tohelp you. But if you want somereal straight talk call one of oursponsors. There are some bigbox stores where you just dontget the personal attention youdeserve. I do not shop thosestores for a lot of reasons. Itsalways nice to know the guy youbought your gun from if youneed some future help. I did seea neat sign at Watkins Marine inPekin IL It says Carry your gunin here we do.

Cathy and I have been doingASO for almost 20 years now. Itsure doesnt seem like that longbut it is. I turn 62 on June 26and have filed for my SocialSecurity. I asked the lady if Ishould wait and she smiled andsaid you are better to take it. Shesaid you would have to live to77 to make it up.

Thats just something I wantedto say because we are all gettingolder and we need to know whatour best options are. That brings

me to a thought that comesalong with ageing and that iswhat I do with all the things Ihave accumulated over theyears. I have a decoy collectionwhich I am selling off alongwith some guns I really dontneed. I have outboard motorsduck calls, duck boats enoughhunting equipment to clothe 30hunters. So much fishing tackleI could open up a store. I reallywould like to keep it all butwhy?

I have guns in the safe I didnteven know I owned. Youresaying I have the same thing butthats the last thing I want to getrid of. Heres why I bring thatup, you can leave a lot of thegear to your kids but in my situ-ation I have 3 boys. One travelsall the time and really doesntfish nor hunt much. Anotherworks all the time and alsodoesnt get in the field much. Then our youngest son does alittle hunting, but is starting hisown business and mostly fishes.Of course my Great Granddads

double barrel Ithaca and familypieces go to the kids there is 30of them. But what do you dowith a K 98 WW2 rifle that hasno sentimental attachment? Ihave come to the conclusionthat it is time to give some fam-ily stuff away and sell the rest.

Next month Bob Murray willdo a story on who gets what andhow do you get rid of the bigcollection of things we all savedover the years. I have been to alot of estate sales and see thingssold for little or nothing. Thingsthat were important to the ownerbut not to the heirs. I remembercleaning out the barn a fewyears ago and my son threwsomething out. I said give thatback I may need it someday. Hesaid ok dad will save it for therack we might get a quarter ifwere lucky. He is right.

By the time you read this Ihope to have a turkey in the bagand to have eaten at least 3messes of mushrooms. It isalways nice to get a few butwith this cool spring and dryweather it will be tough. I donttalk about political stuff you allget enough of that on TV, Radio

and newspaper but I have to saythis. I have lived 62 years andhave never in my life time seenan administration screw up morefor Americans than Obama. Iwont go into it but when he saidwe are no longer a Christiannation and blamed Christians forstarting all the problems in theMideast I threw my hands up.He is not very smart and dontlet his reading of a tele-promptermake you think otherwise.Nothing surprises me anymoreout of that outfit. I just hope theUS citizens dont put Clinton inbut I think Hillary is your nextQueen.

In the meantime, get the kidsoutdoors this month. Many fish-ing tournaments for kids goingon. The Delevan AmericanLegion is having a Kids FishingDerby Sat. May 23rd. CallRussell Stone for more info.309-244-8840. Clyde WestDerby is Sat. May 16th at GlenOak Park Lagoon, Peoria.

Trap & Clay shooting is onand fishing should be great. Sobe sure to keep your powder dryand your worm wet.

Illinois Hunters and Anglers Raise $726,000 through License PurchasesVoluntary Donation of $5 to Illinois Conservation Foundation Supports Youth ProgramsIllinois hunters and anglers have raised $726,000 for youth hunting and fishing programs since 2006. This

years license renewals pushed total donations past the $726,000 mark, and well on the way to a goal of $1 millionraised, hopefully sometime in 2019. When licenses are purchased, individuals are asked to make a $5 donation forthe Illinois Conservation Foundation.

Our long-time supporters know that the ICF is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating youth aboutthe outdoors, said ICF Executive Director Eric Schmidt. We couldnt do this without the support of so manyhunters and anglers who have a vested interest in making sure our children have the same outdoor experiences aswe did growing up.

Hunters and anglers already support our conservation efforts through their purchases of licenses andstamps, said Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Director Wayne Rosenthal. Im not surprised thatour sportsmen and women have stepped up again to fund the Foundations important work to educate the next gen-eration of conservationists.

As the charitable partner of the IDNR, the ICF serves more than 6,000 children annually at the Torstenson YouthConservation Education Center (TYCEC) outside of Rockford, where kids are introduced to hunting, camping andnature observation and sustainability on site, often for the first times in their lives.

Youth hunting education around the state includes mentored experiences with deer, turkey, duck, pheasant, dove, goose and squirrel hunts. These hunts are often in partnership with other organizations, such as DucksUnlimited, the National Wild Turkey Federation and Pheasants Forever.

This spring, thanks to several donors, the ICF will have a brand new fishing pond at the TYCEC. The IDNR will helpto fully stock this pond so children who visit the property will have a chance to learn about and experience catch-and-release fishing. Education can also be taken off the property anywhere in the state with the TorstensonEducation Station, a mobile classroom equipped with a myriad of hunting and fishing gear available for children toget hands-on experience with.

With a mission of inspiring the next generation of conservation leaders and outdoor sportsmen and women, theICF uses all funding to support programs such as the ones above. When you go to buy your license online or at yourfavorite retailer, please consider making that $5 donation to the ICF.

For more info on the ICF, or to arrange individual or corporate support forICF educational and other programs, contact the ICF.

ble domestic attack. It might be an attack by thugs, terrorists, or ac-tually both. Last week's news is a case in point. One of the NationalGuardsmen attempting to join ISIS was assigned to the National GuardArmory in Joliet, Illinois. This was not "over there" or "up there" orsome wacky enclave, this was Joliet, Illinois. Think of the soft targetswithin one hundred miles of Joliet. Think of shopping malls. The mallslook like they are all vying to be the national headquarters for the self-absorbed; of course there are "no concealed carry" signs everywhere.

We have some good news and some bad news. The good news is thatthe end of the legislative session is near. The bad news is that this isthe most dangerous time of the session for gun owners. The next fewweeks we will be working on the omnibus bills. These bills will materi-alize in the middle of May.

This is the time of year when political power brokers begin calling infavors. This is the time of year when late night back room deals arecut. This is the time of year when people like Rahm Emanuel begintwisting arms and wealthy gun grabbers like Michael Bloomberg beginthrowing money around to buy anti-gun votes.

Sadly, many of the legislators who were our "friends" during theelection season are not so "friendly" now that they are under pressurefrom the powerful people who hate guns and the citizens that ownthem.

Throughout the year, the ISRA has been fighting tirelessly inSpringfield to protect your right to keep and bear arms. So far, we'vebeen very successful. However, dozens of antigun bills remain in playin the legislature. Any one of those bills could spring to life and besigned into law.

Yes, licensing, registration, gun taxes and ammu-nition bans all remain dangerous possibilities if thesepoliticians are not watched very carefully.

The ISRA really needs your help to make it to theend of the legislative session. Fighting the hard fighthas seriously depleted our financial resources. These

The NRA Annual Meeting was wonderful as usual. My description ofthe NRA meeting is full of "R" words - reunion, reunite, restore, re-vival, and reinvigorate are a few of them. I want to thank the ISRAmembers who stopped by our booth; it is always great to see everyone.Next year the NRA Annual Meeting will be in Louisville, Kentucky, andthe ISRA will have a booth there. The following year, 2017, the meet-ing will be in Atlanta, Georgia.

The crowd around the Glock booth was deep. Everyone wanted tosee the new Glock G-43 in 9 mm. The G-43 is a single stack designedespecially for concealed carry. I had a chance to handle it and it fit meperfectly.

On the national front, President Obama said on Good MorningAmerica that he is not giving up on pushing his gun control agenda. Hesaid that the NRA is formidable in Congress. Of course we know that. This is why he uses regulatory agencies like the BATFE to attack ourSecond Amendment rights. Expect something else to pop up fromsome other agency or the United Nations.

No one wants to think we arent safe in our own neighborhoods andtowns, but you never know. It is important to be prepared for a possi-

greatly appreciated by ALL of Illinois' gun owners.Remember - you're never more than a dollar away from having your

Today the Peoria Park Districts boundaries en-compass approximately 60 square miles in PeoriaCounty. Our park and open space holdings totalmore than 9,000 acres in the City of Peoria, WestPeoria, Peoria Heights and outlying townships.Much of the land was acquired through matchinggrants from the federal Land-Water-ConservationFund, the Illinois Open Space Lands Acquisition andDevelopment program and many generous gifts anddonations.

population.Besides being one of the oldest and largest park

districts in the state, the Peoria Park District hasalso been recognized as an outstanding example ofwhat parks and recreation is all about. • IT WAS ONLY150 YEARS AGO

April 9, 1865 was the beginningof the end of the Civil War and thefolks here in Peoria, Illinois hadspent the last couple of weeks de-vouring the local newspapers. Wehad more than one and believe methey were competitive rascals thoselocal editors. Pity the poor politi-cian or man that made a fool ofhimself here in town, because theblood thirsty editors were allthere to attack. The local bickeringceased for a few days before thehistoric day of April 9, 1845.There was talk of Lee being on therun and that Grant and other UnionGenerals were talking about endingthe war and gaining a peace thatmost folks could only dream about.

The headline in The Peoria DailyTranscript finally made it official:

    APRIL 9, 1865GLORIOUS INTELLIGENCE!THE REBELLION CRUSHED!

Lees army again beaten and thereported surrender of the whole ofLees forces. All of this from anOfficial Bulletin:

On April 7, 1865 General Sheri-dan attacked and routed LeesArmy.

A telegram from President Lin-coln that went to the Secretary ofWar was printed for all Peorians toread:

    City Point, 8:36 A.M. April 7, 1865

Honorable Secretary of War; at11:15 p.m. Yesterday at BurkesvilleStation, General Grant sends methe following from General Sheri-dan.

Signed A. LincolnAll of the exchanges back and

forth from the President and hisgenerals were then printed for allPeorians to see. All the wonderfulnews and details were read overand over by all the folks here intown and the happy news spreadlike wild fire. On April 10, 1865 lo-cal newspapers continued to printdetails and comments from highranking officers and of course

President Lincoln. The local editorsfell all over them-selves trying to out-do the other editorsin expressing theirpatriotic views. Iwill just give youone example. Thisfrom The DailyTranscript datedApril 9, 1885.

The incubus ofslavery has been re-moved. America canstand up in her fairproportions withouta single stripeerased or a star ob-scured from her flagand take a stand atthe head of theearth as the cham-pion of HUMANITYand FFREEDOM!

It went on for afew hundred morewords, but theywere a bit elegantand long-winded

back in those days. Living here atthe time was the famous oratorRobert G. Ingersoll, and he addedhis glorious voice and praise inseveral rallies and impromptu gath-erings over the next two or threedays. Peorians gathered in RouseHall and other public places to hailthe President of the United Statesand the courageous and heroicUnion soldiers that fought so hardto save the Union.

During the Civil War Peoria gotits famous nick name, The AlcoholCapital of the World, and believeme a lot of our famous whiskeywas consumed during that week ofcelebration and freedom. The localnewspapers made that abundantlyclear in their stories. We also had aparade almost at a moments noticehere in Peoria and on April 10.1865 the streets began to fill withhappy folks shortly after the suncame up.

The festivities brought thousandsof people into Peoria for theplanned parade and merry making.Trains, steamboats, wagons andhorses brought the people here andmany were prepared to stay for atleast two or three days and nights.

It was a mass of humanity comingtogether in a joyous reunion offreedom loving Americans.

The courthouse square quicklyfilled with happy folks. Actually in1865 the locals called it the court-house yard, as folks shook hands, hugged and prepared their crudewagons for the parade. Many ofthe wagons pulled by a single horseor mule were decorated with color-ful ribbons, patriotic signs and longstrings of red, white and bluecrape. There were four beautifulhorses being prepared to pull thelead wagon of the parade alongwith at least eight bands ready tostep off for the happiest day in allPeorias young history. The actualmeeting of the participants washeld outside the city limits as thewagons and horses were lined upfor the big parade.

The lead wagon was occupied byas many people as could possiblyget on board, and all had a tin hornof some type or other prepared tomake as much noise as possible. On the very front was a small gal-lows that hanged President Jeffer-son in effigy. The sign under the

As more and more folks stood inline, some of the wagons pulled upwith colorful signs and decorationswhile others were filled up withhappy people. One reported stated,These folks came from hither andyon and beyond.

Spencers band fell in behind thelead wagon as other smaller bands, eight in all, found room to join theparade. Once the line stretchedout, it continued for just over four

miles. One reporter who decidedto record the time and length of theparade reported that it was overfour miles long and took two hoursto walk the distance from the be-ginning to the end, which was theCourthouse in Peoria, Illinois.

Once they arrived folks aban-doned the wagons and gathered allaround the courthouse to hear thespeakers. Of course there were pa-triotic speeches by a couple of lo-cal politicians, the mayor and localpreachers who asked for prayers ofthanks. The principal speaker wasEbon C. I give dozens of game callingseminars and demonstrations eachyear. Every single time I pick up acall, I explain to the folks watchingand listening that the device in myhand, although it is described as agame call, is really no more than amusical instrument. I also tellthem that game calls operate on thesame two principles as do all musi-cal instruments. Those principlesbeing, rhythm and pitch.

If you can master the rhythm andpitch of a given call, you can besuccessful in the field as you usethat call. And, like a musician, practicing their instrument alone, imaging what it would sound likewith the full orchestra, you mustpractice your calls imaging whatthey will sound like outdoors, atsome distance.

Over half of my seminars eachspring deal with calling and hunt-ing the wild turkey. The springgobbler is still one of the toughestand most sought after game tro-

phies to collect and his popularitygrows each year. Mastering theturkey call can make you a hero inyour hunting group.

My favorite turkey call, by far, isthe box call. I have had lots of pro-fessional experience callingturkeys. For over 25 years I servedon the Pro Staff for LOHMANGAME CALLS, and I am currentlyDirector of the Pro Hunting Stafffor MOUNTAIN SCREAMERGAME CALLS. So, my box call islike an extension of my own hands. Not all box calls are created equal. You must be very selective whenchoosing this call. Not only doesthe type of wood make a huge dif-ference, but also the workmanshipitself is critical to the performanceof a box call, just like any other in-strument. Box calls that are madeof plastic, or stamped-out mass-produced wooden calls will notgive you the sound or the successyou desire. Pay the extra money,up front and get a custom-built box

call that will drive the toms crazy.Once you have decided upon and

purchased your box call, you mustlearn how to play it. I do like thebox call because it is so easy touse. But do not be fooled by thatstatement. It still takes lots ofpractice to master all the soundsthat this call can make.

All too often, turkey hunters failto operate, or play, this instrumentcorrectly. Pressing the paddle ontothe box may help increase volume, but will likely cause you to loosethe desired pitch. Quality custom-built box calls are designed for theweight of the paddle to be suffi-cient pressure to make the boxplay. Most paddles will have asweet spot. Find this spot and youhave found the key to your springsuccess.

Yelps are easily reproduced on abox call by dragging the paddleover one of the box lips. At this

point you are looking for, and lis-tening for, pitch. I will remind youthat if you practice indoors, thepitch will sound profoundly differ-ent outside. Practice outdoors asmuch as possible.

Once you have mastered a singleyelp, line-up several yelps into ashort run of calls. At this point youare working on rhythm. Combin-ing rhythm and pitch will give youa very accurate imitation of a wildturkey.

There are a couple of differentways that you can hold this instru-ment as you play it. My preferredmethod is to hold the box uprightin my left hand and operate thepaddle with my right hand. Thisallows the weight of the paddle todo its job correctly.

Another variation that I haveseen, but do not subscribe to, isholding the box upside down withthe paddle in your left hand, strik-

By laying the paddle on the lipand popping it sharply upward, youcan make an excellent cluck withyour box call. Putts can be made inmuch the same way. By slowlydragging the full width of the pad-dle over the lip, a very seductivepurr can be accomplished.

One of the most exciting and ef-fective sounds the box call can re-

produce is cutting. To do this, holdthe box in your left hand, paddle upand laying on the lip. Use your leftthumb as a bumper. Tap the pad-dle with your right hand allowing itto rebound off your left thumb.Practice this until you get the pitch, then work on the rhythm. This callcan really fire-up old tom and vast-ly improve your chances for suc-cess.

The key to this turkey call and toall others is practice. There is nosubstitution for listening to livebirds and reproducing the soundsyou hear them make. I would liketo recommend a specific box callfor you to try this spring.

Plano, Illinois Word has it that in the days following the Iraqwar, U.S. military members relieved stress by wetting a line in theprivate lakes of none other than Saddam Hussein. Not surprisinglyshort on tackle, these brave angling soldiers fashioned their ownhooks, whittled lures and scavenged odd forms of livebait from theIraqi desert. Some interesting fish were caught, and for a fewhours, the defenders of our freedom relived a passion theyd left athome, but never truly forgotten.

Its in honor of these service men and women around the worldthat Plano has designed new military-themed tackle bagstough-as-armor3700and3600 Military Bags. Constructed witha durable canvas thats reminiscent of an army rucksack, thesefully armed soft bags include two 3700- or 3600-size StowAway Utility Boxes and feature four external zipperedpockets, as well as an adjustable shoulder strap.

Adorned with the exclusive emblems of theMilitary Warriors Support Foundation(MWSF), Plano Military Bagsmake a statement that supports this special organization. Providing recreational fishing, hunting and other familyoutings for wounded military members, the goal of the MWSF is to give back and thank these men and women forloyal service to their country.

To further demonstrate Planos military appreciation and support, these striking Military Bags wear specializedA-Tacs camo the same tactical Arid/Urban pattern that has proven itself in a variety of outdoor environments.Soldiers have since talked about the strange monster fish lurking in Saddams lakes. If only theyd been armed withPlano Military Bags and StowAway boxes stuffed with their favorite fishing tackle...

PLANO FISHING: A tradition of excellence. Owning a Plano tackle box has become a heritage that has endured for morethan half a century. In 1952,Plano introduced the first molded plastic tackle box. For the next fifty years, the Plano brand foundits way into the hearts and hands of four generations. Today, there's a 4 in 5 chance that if you own a tackle box, it was madeby Plano. There are many reasons why consumers choose Plano, including quality, durability and innovation, but our favorite is"It's what my dad always used."

PLANO HUNTING: Innovation and quality are the traits that have become associated with the Plano brand. Thousands ofhunters and shooters have come to trust Plano for the storage of their firearms, bows and hunting accessories. Since 1952Plano has been supplying outdoor enthusiast with storage solutions that allow them to make the most of the time they have out-doors.

Blackened CatsThe other night I smoked up the

neighborhood with a batch of blackenedred drum that I got from a friend ofmine. I hadnt cooked a batch of any-thing blackened for a long time, and hadforgotten what a true gift Nawlins ChefPaul Prudhomme presented to us backin the seventies.

I havent been salt water fishing in acouple years and that redfish gave methe hankering to get down there andcatch me some flounder, speckled troutand I am sure some skates and rays aswell. I have promised to everyone inearshot that the next ray I get will getcooked.

I dont know a soul that keeps rays forfood and most of them get whackedonce they get in the boat and start flail-ing that barbed tail around and thenthey get tossed overboard. In my way of

thinking, if an unscrupulous fish mon-ger can sell pieces of ray punched outwith a cookie cutter so they can sellthem as scallops tells me that they canbe pretty good eats.

Most of the catch that comes from thebrackish waters that we fish are somevery good eats. This water producesblue crab, white and brown shrimp anda host of fish that end up presenting youwith lip smackin goodness. If your mid-west fish store stocks fresh or frozenitems there are some great things youcan do with them.

Lets take the blackening idea. If youdont have redfish you can substitutesome nice catfish filets instead. If youdecide to do it, make sure you have a

well-ventilated kitchen or do as Idocook it outside. If you dont ownsomething like cast iron skillets or a ves-sel that can get smoking hot dont evenattempt this. Lets assume catfish andnot redfish for your purposes.6 1/2 inch thick catfish filets (8oz. ea. or so)2.5 tsp. salt1 tsp. onion powder1 tsp. garlic powder1 tsp. cayenne pepper3/4 tsp. black pepper3/4 tsp. white pepper1/2 tsp. dried thyme1/2 tsp. dried oregano3 sticks of butter melted (prefer unsalted for this)

Mix all the spices together. Dip eachpiece of fish in the butter and put a gen-erous amount of spices on both sides ofeach piece of fish. You probably want todo this on parchment or waxed paper.Preheat a cast iron griddle or skillet foreight to ten minutes or until it is whiteand ashy looking. Cook each filet till itappears charred (about two min.) turn tothe second side and drizzle more butterover each piece and cook till the fish iscooked thru. Hey! It isnt somethingyou want to eat every day and it is worthfasting the next day if you have to.Continue with the rest of the fish whilekeeping the others hot in a warm oven.Serve with some wild rice and a goodfresh veggie and you have about a fifty

dollar a plate restaurant meal sitting onyour table.

Based on how this winter has pro-gressed an early spring may be in the off-ing. Catch some early walleye andsauger and bag a nice tom this spring. As always keep it clean out there.

It was around that time that mydad, Warren Nugent, was struckhard with the bowhunting bug dueto Fred's easy going, genuine style

Like all youngsters growingup in the great hunting state ofMichigan, I already had a kid's bowand arrow rig by the time I was twoyears old, and spurred on by ourannual family bowhunting jauntsinto the mystical big woods ofMichigan's "Up North" gamelands,my passion for the mystical flightof the arrow and fascination withwildlife was taking over my life.

A SHORT STORY ON LONG RODSby Dave [email protected]

As I reflect on days of long past, Im remember-ing the many fishing poles that we neighborhoodboys cut out of the old willow trees lining the Lit-tle Wabash River. I was the most fortunate sincethe river flowed thru our east pasture, making itonly a few yards from my back door. These fishingpoles were certainly a far cry from the elaboratemodels of today, but we caught a few fish andlearned some good lessons in stealth and bait se-lections. Sometimes my lines were made from apiece of kite string or similar cotton fiber that Icould talk my mother into contributing to thecause. I suspect she made the contribution so

that I would get out of her hair for the day. Theearly hooks were safety pins bent into a hookconfiguration and had no barbs. As I ponder theprimitive nature of these contraptions comparedto modern gear, its amazing that we caught any-thing. But we did!

I was asked some questions recently concern-ing the way to select a fishing rod. Certainly, thevast selection can be confusing, especially to anewcomer. There are so many differing types, makes, models, and materials. The first criterianecessary in the selection process is the type andsize of the fish you seek. Lets assume yourefishing in the Midwest for crappie, bass, panfishand maybe up to the size of some stripers.

Probably most newcomers and youngsters, anddedicated panfish anglers will be well served withspin-cast reels coupled with light action rods offiberglass or graphite construction. The spin-cast reels are closed faced in design makingthem less likely
