Summary Description / Key Patterns and Elements
plain to the north and the higher unenc losed moorland of Mynydd C arningli to the south. I t is charac terised by a fairly densely
packed dis tribution of cottages and small agricultural holdings set in a landscape of small, irregular fields . P as ture is the
dominant land-use, but much of the land c lose to the mountain edge is reverting to rough grazing and moorland, and sc rubby
woodland is regenerating in sheltered hollows at lower levels . There is very little improved pas ture. Boundaries to the small fields
are a mixture of s tone-faced banks , s tony banks and dry-s tone walls ; with dry-s tone walls probably the dominant type. There are
gaps in some of the banks , and many of the walls are in poor condition. Barbed wire fences supplement these older boundaries in
many ins tances . A t higher levels it is a virtually treeless landscape, but at lower levels overgrown hedges , many containing much
gorse, and sc rubby woodland lend a wooded aspec t to the landscape -an aspec t that is emphas ised by occas ional small
coniferous shelter belts . Dwellings are generally of two s toreys (with one s torey, and one-and-a-half s toreys present) and three
bays . They are in the broad vernacular tradition of southwest Wales , some with polite ''Georgian'' pretens ions . Their box-sash
windows, symmetry of layout and occas ional architec tural detailing indicates a mid to late 19th century date for the cons truc tion
of most of them. Generally the house quality is better in this area than in other fringe agricultural s

Evaluation
Value:
Moderate (The area has revealed limited evidence of prehis toric occupation but the archaeological record is generally modes t in
scope. The dominant archaeological landscape is pos t-medieval, as evidenced by the many deserted small agricultural
settlements that litter the fieldscape. Based on these observations , the area has been ass igned an overall value of moderate.)
Condition: Fair
Existing management remarks:
Fields reverting to rough grazing and moorland and the abandonment of some of the traditional boundaries provide a very
dis tinc tive upland fringe feel to this landscape... However, if revers ion is left of continue some of the his toric landscape
components may decay and the charac ter of the area changed... Some cons ideration needs to be given to whether this is
des irable, and what ac tion should be taken... The building s tock is in good condition, with many houses res tored in a fashion that
retains their his toric charac ter...
Principal management recommendations C ons ider if revers ion should be allowed to continue

Evaluation Criteria: Integrity
High (This area is charac terised by an extens ive irregular fieldscape interspersed with small pos t-medieval dwellings and
villages . I t is coherent and reasonably well defined. The area is bordered to the S by moorland.)

Evaluation Criteria: Survival
N/A (The pos t-medieval field sys tem depic ted on the 1s t edition O S map has survived largely intac t, the area having remained
subs tantially untouched by modern development. A t C arn Ffoi, to the SW, there are s ignificant, reasonable well preserved remains
of a late prehis toric settlement compris ing at leas t four hut-c irc les with assoc iated enc losures and field sys tem. However, the
dominant landscape is pos t-medieval, compris ing numerous deserted cottages and farmsteads , as well as a number that remain
in occupation. A t Y Garn, there is a poss ible animal pound and at Ty C ol a s izeable farmstead with assoc iated field sys tem. There
is also a 19th century independent chapel, now converted for domestic use.)
Evaluation Criteria: Condition Moderate
Moderate
Evaluation Criteria: Rarity Representative (The rarity value of this area is enhanced by the survival of a s ignificant late prehis toric settlement on C arn Ffoi.)
Evaluation Criteria: Potential
Moderate (This area has been covered by an his toric landscape charac terisation within the Newport and C arningli regis tered
landscape (C ambria A rchaeology, 2003). The prehis toric settlement at C arn Ffoi certainly merits further inves tigation with the
aim of revealing any further s truc tural evidence or features and es tablishing the extent of the settlement, its relationship to
surrounding prehis toric settlements s ites on C arn Ingli and its origins and development. The deserted farmsteads , such as Ty
C ol, merit further attention in order to document their development and eventual abandonment. A survey of the field sys tem may
reveal evidence of relic t features indicative of prehis toric or medieval origins .)
Evaluation Criteria: Overall Evaluation Moderate
