Mette Berger, MD, PhD Dr. Mette Berger, MD, PhD, is an Intensive care physician and associate professor in the Lausanne University Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, specializing in burn care and clinical nutrition. She is also Coordinator of the Lausanne Burn Center. Dr. Berger received her MD degree from the Lausanne School of Medicine, and her medical PhD from the Umeå University, Sweden. She completed her residency in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the CHUV with intermittent fellowships in Stockholm, Sweden and Sydney, Australia. She also trained as a nutritionist in Nancy, France. Dr. Berger is a world-renowned professor and researcher in the field of nutrition and metabolism in critically ill patients. Her research interests include clinical nutrition, micronutrition, and major burns. She developed the concept of maximal tolerable energy debt during the ICU stay. She has also conducted randomized trials with combined enteral and parenteral nutrition in patients with failing enteral feeding, resulting in reduction of infectious complications and of costs, due to an improved immune response. Dr. Berger has spoken globally on the role of micronutrients in major burns, trauma, and patients on continuous renal replacement therapy. She has authored over 230 peer-reviewed publications and 40 book chapters. Dr. Berger is a member of the ESPEN-ICU guidelines group, the ESICM-MEN metabolism and nutrition working group, and the ICALIC (Indirect Calorimetry in the ICU) working group. Sabrina Bierman, MS, RD, CNSC I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2014 with my BS in dietetics and from Rush University in 2016 with my MS in clinical nutrition. My passion for neonatal nutrition began during my internship when I realized the critical role an RD has in the growth and development of neonates. My first job, as a NICU dietitian at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Florida, reinforced this passion. Currently, I am a Principal NICU dietitian at the University of California San Diego. Over the course of my career, I have had an article published in the NCP titled “Identification, Coding, and Reimbursement of Pediatric Malnutrition at an Urban Academic Medical Center,” received ASPEN’s Neonatal New Practitioner of the Year Award, and became the editor of ASPEN’s Neonatal Newsletter. In my current position at UCSD I have played an instrumental role in the implementation of a donor human milk program in our newborn units. This has assisted in bridging the gap until mom’s milk supply comes in. I believe in the importance of helping the premature infant receive the best nutrition possible by optimizing nutrient delivery for adequate growth while at the same time ensuring that they receive immunoprotection through human milk. Ann-Marie Brown, PhD, APRN, CPNP-AC/PC, CCRN, FCCM Dr. Ann-Marie Brown completed her BSN at the University of Akron, MSN at Kent State University, and PhD through the joint program at The University of Akron/Kent State University. She is a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and her leadership roles include serving on the Board of Directors for the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies. Her ASPEN involvement includes serving on the Research and Conference Monitoring Committees and membership in the Nursing, Critical Care, and Pediatrics Sections.
