Newsletter 01/2011

Dear readers,

The upbeat atmosphere at Photonics West in San Francisco surely was not only due to the good weather (sunny, 68°F). After a period of suffering, the sector is once again opti-mistic and working on new projects. We hope this prevai-ling tone continues and look forward to an interesting year 2011. The excitement at asphericon at the moment is due to the construction of the new company building - read

tion and efficiency with resources the central ideas behind our daily work, they also make up the central themes for our new complex“, says Alexander W. Zschaebitz, Financial Director at asphericon GmbH. „With the new complex we will be able to fulfill the constantly growing needs of our customers for high quality aspheres and the closely related services such as optical design and coating. We are also creating space for new research and development projects and will be able to demonstrate our position as the techno-logical and innovation leader. Moreover we have succee-ded in designing an sustainable and efficient production processes based on advanced utilities management.“

asphericon‘s modern headquarters will be built on a 5,000 sqm plot of land. It is conveniently located on the exit of the East-West tangent of the A4 freeway. With her design, the architect Viola Schemmel, from Freyler Industriebau Leipzig, creates a successful synthesis between the exter-nally eye-catching production hall which has actually been reduced to the bare minimum and the subtly-designed administration area, which, with its open glass facade, ap-pears to be both confident and reserved at the same time.

Customer-oriented, efficient and at the cutting edge of technology, asphericon GmbH is building its new company headquarters in Jena‘s new industrial area „JenA4“. The official ground-breaking ceremony took place on Jan 10, 2010 and symbolized the beginning of construction on the production, development and administration complex of the medium-size optics company.

„With this investment we want to throw open the gate to continuously dynamic growth“, says Technical Manager Sven R. Kiontke during the ground-breaking ceremony. „With strong partners by our side, today marks the begin-ning of an important investment for the future of aspheri-con and above all our customers and staff. We will be able to optimize all manufacturing process and finally create a building to be shared by all our colleagues. Just in time for asphericon‘s tenth anniversary, the new building marks the company‘s transition from a ‚start-up‘ to an establis-hed medium-size company that is known throughout the world.“

During the first construction phase, a production area with around 1,800 sqm of hall space will be built by the middle of the year. In addition to integrating existing production areas, particular emphasis was placed on creating space for new departments. In addition to this, the construction project was planned according to the latest environmental standards. For example, rain water reservoirs supply the sanitation facilities and are also used for outside irrigation. Process heat is added to the heating system in winter and in the summer an intelligent ventilation system ensures that

less heat enters the building, thereby making the environ-ment more comfortable for the staff. The use of renewable energy media such as the building‘s photovoltaic plant also supplies environmentally friendly heat.

as the executive general contractor. All civil engineering works were allocated to Hoch-, Tief- und Strassenbau GmbH Hubert Werner from Hainichen.

The second construction phase will comprise a 750 sqm development and administration complex. From late sum-mer, the building will provide 2 floors of space for work and communication as well as free space for creativity and relaxation. „A small terrace and various ‚Meeting Points‘ are intended to encourage communication outside the offices and production rooms. For us it was very important to remo-ve the separation that has existed up until now between the various departments and to get all colleagues more involved in the daily development of the company. At the same time we want to provide a comfortable working environment for future staff with this open and integrative design“, empha-sizes Marketing Director Dr. Thomas Hegenbart.

Both construction phases can be extended by a further 5,000 sqm if required. The technology company is inve-sting a total of around Euro 5 million in the construction project and the technical equipment. The project, which is supported by the Free State of Thuringia, was co-financed by funds from the European Union as part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). In addition to the main financial partner, Sparkasse Jena, asphericon was also able to bring the Leipzig-based Freyler Industriebau GmbH on board

Mr. Zschaebitz - right on time for the 10 year anniversary, this year, you will be able to dedicate the new company headquarters. What does this milestone mean for aspheri-con and for you personally?

Zschaebitz: Absolutely, the new construction is a big event for us. First of all, of course, considering the company his-tory. After 10 years we are outgrowing our entrepreneurial shoes and creating space for the developments of decades to come. Secondly, a project of this magnitude implies a certain financial burden that has to be borne by the current business operations. We already have one relocation and

several expansions behind us - that is why I‘m very optimi-stic that we will manage this relocation well too. For me personally, the construction is the perfect conclu-sion to the past years. Ten years ago we were sitting in a two-man office at the University of Jena. In late summer we will have more than 2,100 m² of floor space to use. The new site is sort of a tenth anniversary gift to ourselves.

How is construction coming along?

When I arrive at the office in the morning, I usually first check the current weather report. This time of year, mo-ther nature always has a surprise in store for us that we have to cope with. As cold and precipitous as the months of December and January were, we still were able to use the sunshine in February for work on the foundations. If all activity continues without delay, work on the building‘s shell can begin in mid March.

The last fiscal year was the most successful in the history of asphericon GmbH. Will you be able to meet your own expectations despite the upcoming move?

With a growth in sales of around 50% we went beyond our own goals for 2010. Of course we want to sustain this speed of growth and continue on the road to success. Though the capacity restrictions we will surely encounter due to the relocation should not be an excuse. Quite the contrary: we have accepted this challenge and despite any limitations we will complete the planned customer projects successfully and to their utmost satisfaction.

How do you expect the business performance to be in 2011?

As a general rule we are optimistic about the full year – this is consistent with our general attitude. The economic situa-tion has continued to improve in many sectors and we are seeing an increasing demand for optical components. We want to profit from this development which has manifested in twice as many orders received compared to the first two months of the previous year and are currently working on scenarios for the next expansion of our capacities after the relocation. Our ultimate goal is to assist customers more actively in regard to specific questions. In particular, our im-proved portfolio which spans from highly precise aspheres (asphericon ION-FinishTM) to the production of optical

design and finishes should enable our customers to be more even more successful in their own core business

Mr Zschäbitz, thank you!

Projects20th anniversary of the University of Applied Sciences Jena

asphericon sponsors anniversary celebration

At the University of Applied Sciences Jena (FH Jena) impor-tant events lie ahead. This year the university is celebrating its 20-year history. In 1991, when the FH Jena was founded, it was one of the first educational institutions of its kind in the new federal states of Germany. The academic program started with 272 students. Today, with around 5,000 stu-dents, it has been the largest university of applied sciences in the state of Thuringia for several years.

The FH Jena has three academic pillars: engineering, busi-ness administration and social sciences. Currently FH Jena offers 36 bachelor and master programs in eight depart-ments. The short length of study programs and practical approach complement the education at standard universities and technical universities in a sensible way. The FH Jena has three academic pillars: engineering, business administration and social sciences. Currently FH Jena offers 36 bachelor and master programs in eight departments. The short length of study programs and practical approach com-plement the education at standard universities and technical universities in a sensible way. For the purposes of a comprehensive scientifically sound and practice based education, the FH cooperates with universities in Europe and beyond. Fruitful partnerships also exist with industry. asphericon has also cooperated with FH Jena for

many years. In addition to cooperation in various research pro-jects, this includes above all the training of young professionals. Alexander W. Zschäbitz, managing director of asphericon emphasizes: „Everyone at asphericon GmbH appreciates the fact that we have a partner like FH Jena at our side. Many projects could not have been completed without the intense legwork and cooperation of FH Jena. We are therefore hap-py to support the numerous anniversary events as one of the main sponsors. We wish FH Jena luck in their policy making decisions in the next 20 years.”
