Message
Since its founding in 1989, the Singapore Teachers’ Art Society has been the only organization connected with
art in the teaching profession. Members are not confi ned to just art teachers, other subject teachers who are
interested in art can also join as members. Thus the Society serves as a platform for teachers to exchange views
on art teaching and on local art scene as a whole.
To achieve its objectives, the Society has been active in organizing various activities such as talks, art camps,
painting trips, etc. Amongst all these activities, the annual art exhibition is an exclusive event that most members
are looking forward to. This only teachers’ art exhibition showcases the art works of the teachers executed in the
past one year. The exhibition provides an opportunity for teachers to exchange notes or innovative methods in art
teaching. It also allows the students to understand the capabilities of their teachers who may become their role
models.
As the Ministry of Education places more emphasis on humanity and aesthetic subjects, more art teachers will
be recruited. While we welcome this move, we are also concerned for the qualifi cation of the subject teachers
who are asked to teach art. Ideally, art classes should be manned by professionally trained and competent art
teachers. Now that the School of The Arts (SOTA) has started operating and many of its students are drawn
from PSLE school leavers, the art lessons in primary schools are in high time to be beefed up and handled by
competent art teachers.
Under the current circumstances, the Singapore Teachers’ Art Society may wish to review its position vis-à-vis the
new landscape in art education so as to enable it making greater contribution in art education and in promoting
art in Singapore.
I wish the Teachers’ Art Exhibition 2010 every success!

Message
“It is our desire to see more teachers make time to answer the urge to paint and soon join us in our exhibitions. The best way to appreciate art is to be
immersed in the art scene.”
The Singapore Teachers’ Art Society is 21 years old. We are of age! Though we have come a long way
from then, we still have to persist in our various programmes to keep our society actively alive.
We search around, organize painting trips, near and far, to acquire fresh ideas and inspirations. We learn,
discuss, share knowledge and experiences, explore and work them out at our art camp and painting
sessions. Mingling with artists during visits to exhibitions and at our art camp gives us the opportunities
to know the different personalities who see things so different from everyone. The interaction among our
members during our meetings deepens our friendship and thus art making together is always relaxing and
enjoyable. What a way to widen our horizon and keep abreast with the ever moving art scene.
The outcome of all our activities is the annual art Exhibition. It is our yearly major affair. It helps us attain
our unchanging objective of promoting art among our teachers, students and public. The exhibition is
where our teacher members can present their thoughts, creativity and talent to the public through their
recent artwork. We hope the innate passion for art in our teachers and students will be ignited by the
works on display. It is our desire to see more teachers make time to answer the urge to paint and soon join
us in our exhibitions. The best way to appreciate art is to be immersed in the art scene.
We welcome all suggestions on activities that members would like the society to organize for them be it
personal upgrading or work related. Let’s paint together, learn together and we will be better.
Here, we wish to thank our Guest –of – Honour and advisor, Dr Ho Kah Leong for his unfailing support.
We are immensely grateful to Ngee Ann Cultural Centre for sponsoring the venue for our exhibitions
these several years and we are deeply thankful to Lee Foundation, The Singapore Arts Federation, China
Express Travel (S) and Universal Travel Corporation for their generous grants. Without their kind support,
this exhibition would not be possible.
