Natascha Engel, the MP for North East Derbyshire, agreed to answer questions from Y10 students on her role as an MP and the topical matter of MPs’ expenses. The other local schools involved were; Parkside, Springwell, St Mary’s, Hasland Hall, Brookfield and Bolsover. For ninety minutes students asked perceptive and penetrating questions that showed that they had done a great deal of research. There were some very uncomfortable moments for the MP but it was generally felt that Natascha Engel answered students’ questions in a straightforward way that was not patronising. Three of our students; Meghan Lilleyman, Marcus Walker and Ashley Gregory said, ‘We thought the experience was very useful as it helped us to understand and learn more about the present situation in parliament.’ The students were clearly enthused by the debate with most saying that they would like the opportunity to visit parliament and see it in action for themselves. A longer article appears in the July edition of School Matters On 19th May 2009 Abbey-Jo Moores and Natasha Ganecki received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award certificates from His Majesty Prince Philip at St James’s Palace, London. These awards were the culmination of several years of enjoyable hard work, dedication, teamwork and personal development. Both Abbey-Jo and Natasha began with Bronze then progressed to Silver before their Gold. Natasha was involved with the Air Training Corps for her Service; she did music (playing an instrument) for her Skill. Martial Arts was her Physical Recreation and for the Residential she completed her Community Sports Leader Award. Abbey-Jo Helped at a Youth club for her Service and played in a band for her Skill. Her Physical Recreation involved Fitness Activities and her Residential was a Cookery course. They both completed their practice expedition in the Yorkshire Dales and their final assessed 4 day expedition was in the Dark Peak area. Currently nearly 50 students aged 14 and upward are involved in the D of E at Tupton Hall at all three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. We now have many more approaching their Gold completion with a qualifying expedition in Snowdonia in July. Abbey-Jo and Natasha, however, will always be remembered as our first two Gold award holders. Well done both of you. On the 22nd May the Sixth Form Prom was held at the Sheffield Park Hotel, over 180 students and staff partied the night away. The evening included a three course sit down dinner, staff and student awards and a spectacular Macarena finale. It was a fitting end to a wonderful school year for the students who all looked absolutely fabulous. The Sixth Form Council did a fantastic job of organising and running the event. Congratulations to them for organising a brilliant social event.

The German Exchange 2009-10THS hosts international event! No, I’m not talking about the G8Summit, but one with as muchimportance! Having built on linksestablished over the last 2 years, thenewly re-established GermanExchange once again became part ofTupton Life.Having decided to focus mostly on Y8students, we deliberately set up a verysmall scale exchange; we did not wishto over-extend in the first year! We set up links between the school in Pfungstadt, nr.Darmstadt in mid-Germany, we made these links tangible by inviting the Germanstudents over to spend time with their British counterparts. We had our German studentsto stay with us 17th – 24th June, with the German member of staff staying with me.During their stay, we went bowling together (to break the ice!), took them to Chatsworth(to enhance their cultural awareness!) and sent them off to Meadowhall (to buy theirsouvenirs!) On all occasions, we as a school could not have wished for better mannersor attitudes from the German or British students. The German students were alsofortunate enough to spend time in our school system, and learned a great deal aboutour differences and also our similarities. The plan is now for us to return the visit in November, where I am sure our students willbe shown the same care and respect that the Germans were exposed to here. Many thanks to all who were involved and here’s looking forward to November!

Mr. Ford (Head of MFL)

This year’s Sports Day had highexpectations from the onset and it

did not disappoint. Highlyorganised year groups had meantthat teams were selected well in

advance of the competitionresulting in a full complement of

athletes in nearly every event. Withwell over 400 students

participating this was a highlyenjoyable day for both studentsand staff. Student behaviour was

really good and made for apleasant and sporting atmosphere. The results were possibly the closestwe have seen in a while with only

a few points separating the Houses in the end.

1st Hunloke 2nd Gladwin3rd Cavendish 4th Turbutt

This is the second year on the trotthat Hunloke have won, but only

narrowly beating Gladwin this time. The PE Department would like

to thank the all the staff on behalfof the students for their helpin making this day possible.

On Tuesday 12th May 2009 the Year 11 and 6th form football teamswent head to head at Saltergate for bragging rights to be crowned thebest team in the school. It really was a game of two halves with the6th form dominating the first period. By the break they had racked upa 3 - 0 lead with goals from Kris Lowe and two from Paul Mildenhall. After some choice words and a tactical reshuffle during the half-timebreak the Year 11 team were transformed in the second half. They laidsiege on the sixth form goal with Scott Margereson in the Year 11 goala virtual spectator. Goals form Karl Hallam and Jordan Lemon reducedthe deficit and despite their best efforts to score an equaliser the 6thform team held on for the victory. A special mention to Ellis Wall andPaul Mildenhall who put in man of the match displays for their teams. The event raised over £1000 pounds which will be split between theAshgate Hospice (Year 11) and a charity chosen by the 6th form students.I would like to take this opportunity to thank the players, students whohelped out on the night and the staff from the P.E. Department who gaveup their time to make the event a huge success.

Many Thanks Andy White
