Keynote Speaker

Keynote Address | Ballrooms 3 & 4 | 8:35 - 9:45

Thomas Bartman, M.D., Ph.D.

[email protected]

Associate Medical Director for Quality at Nationwide Children's Hospital

Co-Director of Quality Improvement for Neonatal Services

Although Tom received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from MIT, the

“engineer’s” way of doing things has always resonated with him. After

receiving his MD and PhD degrees from Temple University he

embarked on a career of basic science research in heart development

and neonatal intensive care until undergoing a career shift to quality

improvement in 2010. Since that time, he has used Deming’s

management philosophies and tools of industrial engineering at

Nationwide Children's Hospital to direct quality improvement activities

across the neonatal services section; to co-direct quality improvement

hospital-wide; and to develop educational programs for front-line

caregivers, leaders, and future leaders. He is also involved in leadership of quality collaboratives at

the local, state, and national level.

Keynote Topic: Strategies and Tactics used to Develop a Robust Quality and Safety Program

at the Largest Pediatric Hospital in the U.S.

Successful quality improvement and safety efforts require a number of factors to be present at the

institutional, microsystem, and team levels. These include, but are not limited to overall QI strategic

planning, senior leadership buy-in, internal and external motivation, quality and safety culture,

resource availability, team leadership and skill, front-line buy-in, and education in QI science. This

presentation will describe these factors in neonatal services and throughout Nationwide Children's

Hospital, with an emphasis on educational programs and building of capacity/competence

throughout the workforce.

After the keynote, learn about an actual case study performed at the hospital from Don Buckingham,

MBOE- Service Line Quality Improvement Coordinator at Nationwide Children's Hospital

“Decreasing the duration of discharge antibiotic treatment follow-

ing inpatient uncomplicated soft tissue abscess drainage: Find-

ings from a quality improvement project ”

Don Buckingham, MBOE—Quality Improvement Service Line

Coordinator at Nationwide Children's Hospital

Following inpatient uncomplicated soft tissue abscess drainage, patient

antibiotic therapy practices showed to have a range of zero to thirty-one

days with an average treatment of over eight days. By implementing an

drastic increase in the frequency of prescribing less than five days of

such post-procedure therapy, the team was able to address

opportunities of ED encounters, Urgent Care visits, and systemic

antibiotic prescription costs. Their goal was to maintain the new control

practice for six months.

Don currently serves in the Emergency Department, Offsite Urgent

Care Clinics, Infectious Disease and Endocrinology.

He is a graduate of The Ohio State Masters of Business Operations Excellence program and was

certified by OSU Fisher College of Business as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt while Executive Vice

President of Perio Inc. [Barbasol Brands]

5S: An Interactive Experience

“An interactive Experience that Illustrates the Impact of this

Powerful Lean Concept”

Luis Loya

Master Black Belt

Cardinal Health

Many corporate Lean Six Sigma training programs do an excellent job

with teaching six sigma methodologies and tools but sometimes fall

short of providing an in-depth fundamental understanding of practical

lean concepts and principles. At Cardinal Health, a supplemental

workshop style training has been developed for the purpose of closing

this gap and to expand lean skills such as 5S (Sort, Set-in-Order, Shine,

Standardize & Sustain). This session will examine this methodology,

content and tools with a workshop style exercise and attendees will

have an opportunity to participate and experience an abbreviated version of the interactive hands-on

exercise for 5S.

Luis Loya began his career in 1994 with General Motors that later became Delphi Automotive in

1997 where he obtained 16 years of hands-on lean experience within process improvement

environments. During this time he held roles of Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, Industrial Engineering

Group Manager and Global Lean Manufacturing Systems Leader supporting manufacturing

operations in Mexico, Portugal, South Korea and China where he led or participated in over 67

kaizen events.

Luis joined Cardinal Health in 2010 as an Operational Excellence Manager supporting 20

pharmaceutical warehouse operations facilities. He is currently a Master Black Belt with

responsibilities supporting Inventory Management, Sourcing, five pharmaceutical forward distribution

centers in the US and Puerto Rico; as well as mentoring and coaching up to 17 Black Belts from

those deployment areas.

Luis has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso and

a master’s degree in industrial engineering from Texas A&M University; has Kaizen Leader and

Green Belt certifications from Delphi Automotive and a Black Belt certification from Cardinal Health.

Muri - The Forgotten Waste?

Ballroom 3 | 11:00 - 12:15

“How to Enable Quality in Your Organization Through Strategic

Resource Planning”

People, process, and infrastructure are some of the biggest levers that

management has to increase quality performance, yet experience finds

that many organizations do not have a strong grasp on the essential

number of skilled people and pieces of equipment required to execute

work to a specified quality standard. Increasing competition and focus

on costs can motivate businesses to operate at “bare bones” staffing

levels and simultaneously try to implement piecemeal Lean

Manufacturing practices to reduce waste. Management then wonders

why quality performance has suffered, workers are unhappy, and

continuous improvement has not been embraced within the culture.

This interactive session focuses on the comprehensive approach to

waste elimination advocated by the Toyota Production System and

contrasts that with what is seen in many organizations today. Through

resource planning case studies, you will learn methodologies to

quantitatively and qualitatively ensure that you are operating with the

appropriate number of resources to prevent overburdened workers (i.e.

Muri), meet customer demand with high quality output, and allow for

continuous quality improvement.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand and define the three M’s in the Toyota Production System

• Explain why eliminating Muri is often the most critical (and overlooked) waste to avoid

when it comes to product or service quality and timing

• Apply resource planning methodologies in your own organization to improve quality and

timing of processes and projects

Eric Vanderson is responsible for facilitating planning, budgeting, and execution of the generic non-

injectable product pipeline from ideation to FDA approval. As one of the largest manufacturers in

Columbus, Hikma Pharmaceuticals employs over 1,000 people at the Columbus Campus and

medications used to treat very serious medical conditions, such as diabetes and cancer.

Previously, Eric held several key roles within the Industrial Operations & Product Supply (IOPS)

Group at Regeneron, a NY-based biotechnology company. As part of the IOPS Senior Leadership

Team that led the launch of blockbuster EYLEA® for wet-age macular degeneration, one of the top 3

drug launches in biopharmaceutical industry history, Eric directed the effort leading the Rensselaer,

NY Site to win the Shingo Bronze Medallion. Regeneron was the only American company to be

recognized in 2013 by the internationally-recognized Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence.

Born and raised in Columbus, Eric received a B.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering

from Carnegie Mellon University and a Masters in Business Administration from The Ohio State

Increasing Audit Effectiveness While Reducing Risk

Ballroom 4 | 11:00 - 12:15

Risk-based thinking is something most of us do automatically without

concentrating. We normally act to prevent issues from occurring. The

concept of risk has always been implicit in ISO 9001. Now it is more

explicit and needs to be considered. We use auditing to ensure our

processes are working and effective. Audits should ensure actions

effectively reduce risk. Are your audits as effective as they can be?

This interactive session focuses on the overall audit process and tools

for more effective audits. The material includes audit preparation, audit

execution, report writing, and closing meeting. You will learn how to

audit more effectively and reduce risks further.

Learning Objectives:

• Develop an audit plan and understand the importance of each step.

• Develop an audit checklist for the process and procedure you are

auditing and identify actions taken to reduce risks.

• Document a well-written finding that is clear and provides supporting

evidence.

The Strategy and Tools for Transformation Leaders: 2 Part Series

Your challenge as a 21st Century leader of excellence is to transcend

tired practices of the past. It is not enough to improve processes, solve

problems and run projects to achieve minimum standards, reduced

variation and low costs. The new leader is impatient to achieve

“impossible” outcomes, excite customers, engage employees and set

new measures of success others can only dream about. It is a tall order

requiring an entirely new focus, paradigm and tools. Attend this thought

-leading, interactive and entertaining session by one of ASQ’s top-rated

presenters and authors to start down the practical road to insightful

cultural transformation.

Success requires a transformation system as well as a systems

approach to transformation. This session will provide you with both.

You will apply unique tools to your own situation and see eye-opening

examples others have obtained. Learn how multiple practitioners got

lightening fast results such as $20 million in savings, $8 million in new

monthly revenue, response time reductions of 90%, raving fans and

recognition for best-in-class enterprise performance. If you are an

executive, change agent, innovation leader or Lean Six Sigma MBB

impatient for transformative results, this jargon-free session is for you. Take-aways you can

immediately apply include:

• An Excellence IQ. You will complete this at the start of the session, pin-pointing areas to

immediately address.

• 10 Steps to Customer-Centered Excellence: Your road map and tools.

• Six Leadership Levers for transformation: Eliminate the sources of ambiguity, confusion,

chaos and conflict that prevent cultural change and ISO success.

Seven Basic Tools of Quality In Action Today

Back in the 1950s, Edward Deming emphasized basic tools for quality

improvement. Inspired by Deming’s lectures in Japan, Kaoru Ishikawa is

attributed with further defining Deming’s basic tools into seven specific

tools. This toolset was touted as simplifying the perceived complexity of

continuous improvement, thus bringing a quality focus to front-line

employees.

But much has changed in the last 60 years. Has Ishikawa’s belief held

true in modern application? Are companies successfully using these

seven tools to solve 95% of their problems? Join Ellen Milnes for an

overview of the original Seven Basic Tools of Quality and a discussion

regarding their practical application.

This session will explore the following poignant questions:

• Are these the tools most frequently used for process improvement

projects? See what the data analytics reveal.

• Considering that these tools were originally selected for a

manufacturing environment, are they universally applicable across

industries, e.g. service industries?

• Is this list sufficient to implement and sustain improvement? If not,

what’s missing from the list?

Ellen Milnes serves as the Director of Marketing for MoreSteam, a global provider of eLearning and

software to drive enterprise process improvement. Ellen has taught Strategic Management at Ohio

Dominican University and Operations Management at The Ohio State University as an adjunct

faculty member. Prior to coming to MoreSteam, she was the business unit leader for Columbia Gas

of Ohio’s billing, collections, and call center operations. She served as a Continuous Improvement

Team Leader for customer service processes, was a Champion for WorkSmart Events, and held a

variety of corporate HR management roles. Ellen holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Labor and Human
