Assalamualaikum
First and foremost, we would like to congratulate AgungGunawan and The
Arts Island Festival for a great event. Since the inaugural festival in 2010,
we have seen the festival grow from strength to strength. Today we are
witnessing a display of great mix of International and Local artists.
In The Arts Island Festival (ITAIF) is a sister festival to Melaka Arts and
Performance Festival (MAP Fest) and was established with a model on
finding new ways to involve the arts, artists and the general community.
MAPFest has a high national, and international profile, being recognised
for its program of exciting independent arts, collaborations and its use of
alternative sites for performance. ITAIF has its own was of involving local
communities and indeed the close network and exchange of new ideas
between festival creative directors, Agung Gunawan and Tony Yap
constanly address the changing ways to back basic links between artists
and the general public. These festivals remain inclusive and free to all.
Agung and Tony are long-term collaborators and challenge the non-
western approach of art practice to the global contemporary arena.
The festivals visions are unique and always reflecting news ways of
promoting the practice of revolutionary art, free of convention, the power of
structure and the market place. That art remain richly diverse with
individual voices. We make art accessible to all in heritage site-specific
milieu.
Both festivals have made great connections for international artists
together with Malaysians and Indonesian artist to result in many important
new works and continuity.
We are very proud to be a supporter to Agung Gunawan and the Arts
Island Festival. With the continuous support from supporters and
Government bodies we will continue to see the festival flourish and grow.
Agung, being an established and world-renowned dancer, he has also
recently been awarded the Cameronian Awards for Choreography in
Malaysia for his collaboration works.

The Arts Island Festival is a rare and unique opportunity for Indonesian
independent contemporary artists to present their work alongside touring
international artists. With little funding for the arts available in Indonesia,
this festival offers a platform for independent artists to present work and
be immersed in festival culture.
The drive behind The Arts Island Festival shows the importance of the
arts within the community. All artists offer their time pro bono in return for
the experience of presenting and touring work. All performances are
FREE, encouraging the community to support artistic expression.
I would like to mention and acknowledge the importance of every artist in
this festival, their independence and mastery in the development their
creative works. This is a community of artists who will and have made
deep connections to each other. We continue to collaborate and find
new and exciting creative works.

Multicultural Arts Victoria strongly supports the objectives of the 2005 UNESCO
Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions,
which states the need to create the conditions for cultures to flourish and to freely
interact in a mutually beneficial manner. The Arts Island Festival is a unique site
specific initiative created and directed by dancer Agung Gunawan which brings
cultures and arts forms together to flourish.
In the expression of diverse cultures through art we enable people to feel connected,
represented and it enables us to learn about each other in creative and expressive
ways that contributes to greater understanding and respect. The festival also
celebrates Indonesia as a country rich in diverse cultures and arts, with close cultural
ties and relationships with Australia and the region.
The Arts Island Festival also builds connections and understanding of Indonesian life
beyond the major centres, major theatres and importantly profiles the rich
independent arts sector in Indonesia and Australia. Now in its fourth year, the
Festival is an opportunity for both local Indonesian artists and International artists to
present their work in regional Indonesia and establish future collaborative
relationships, strengthening contemporary arts networks between contemporary
independent artists. For the Australian artists the Festival creates a unique
opportunity for performance, collaboration and creative cross cultural dialogue.
This year through the support of the Australia Indonesia Institute Multicultural Arts
Victoria and Melbourne based artists/technologists Jesse Stevens and Dean Petersen
-Cake Industries, will be collaborating with Bimo Suryojati, RM Altiyanto Henryawan,
Agung Gunawan and Deasylina da Ary to present Shadows on the Wall as part of the
Festival. This new Australia-Indonesia collaboration encourages the exploration of
technology, performance and community engagement through the utilisation of future
technologies, robotics and dance.
“Shadows on the Wall is supported by the Commonwealth through the Australia-
Indonesia Institute of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade”.
Multicultural Arts Victoria has proudly supported the establishment and development
of The Arts Island Festival for the past three years and strongly supports participation
of Australian artists. MAV has worked closely with Tony Yap, who is also the founding
creative director of the Melaka Arts and Performance Festival in Malaysia, sister
festival to the Arts Island Festival, who has mentored and collaborated with Agung as
a fellow creative since 2005. The 2013 festival importantly also builds on
connections developed through Aging’s Australia Indonesia Institute artistic residency
in Australia in 2012.
Multicultural Arts Victoria congratulates The Arts Island Festival team on their vision in
creating a remarkable independent international cultural Festival for creative cultural
expression and discourse that strengthens the relationships between people and
communities.

Title of the workShadows on the Wall
SynopsisThe walls in our lives are often inanimate place holders simply to divide rooms, areas, houses, and laneways. It's not often we think about them until they either fall, or are left standing alone. It is then that we begin to realise what these structures have witnessed and how much they have been a part of our lives.
Our memories animate these walls, with events and people of the past, and the lives that have been led alongside them.
“Shadows on the Wall” is an experimental collaboration between Australian and Indonesian media artists and dancers to bring these memories to life using robotics, dance, projection, improvisation, and video in an unique way.
The Arts Island Festival will be the first public live performance of the piece, following an intensive development and filming in Yogyakarta in early June.
