As I’m sure you are aware, the division recently released a new strategic plan document titled Renewal and Reinvention.1 When we started working on this new strategic plan last May, we put a lot of effort into making this process different from the typical strategic planning process that many of us have seen in the past. We clearly did not want to create a plan document that gathered dust until the next planning cycle. With input from the entire division, we created a plan that is easy to understand, yet powerful enough to result in real change. Now we are at a major transition point of the strategic planning process. The document has been reviewed, approved and published and we now face the challenge of implementing our shared goals and objectives. Again, gathering your input is the first step in drafting the implementation plans for each objective. We started with discussion sessions on three of the objectives. Sessions were held on May 28 and June 3 to discuss the remaining objectives. With your assistance, the functional owner of each objective will be able to identify the resources required for implementation, the actions needed to monitor progress and, most importantly, to establish measurements that will validate success. These measurements of success, the actual assessment of each objective, are what set this strategic plan apart from previous plans. By including an assessment plan in the implementation of each objective, this strategic plan won’t just sit on a dusty shelf; it will become a living document, providing direction for the entire division for years to come.

3rd Annual Assessment And Evaluation
On June 6th the Office of Assessment and Professional Development proudly hosted the 3rd Annual Assessment and Evaluation Poster Fair. Presenters from a diverse group of institutions were at the event including staff from UNC-‐Chapel Hill, UNC-‐Greensboro, High Point University, Pfeiffer University and Duke University. During the event, the office also showcased one of its new tools for data visualization, Tableau, and gave participants the opportunity to see ways in which they might be able to explore their data through interactive dashboards. For more information about the Assessment and Evaluation Poster Fair, please feel free to contact the Office of Assessment and Professional Development. Duke Dining-‐Survey Comparative Analysis For the second consecutive year Duke Dining has participated in the National Association of College and University Food Service (NACUFS) Customer Satisfaction Benchmarking Survey for Dining’s main two dining halls-‐Great Hall and Marketplace. The survey report is designed to provide a detailed look at the satisfaction ratings of the aforementioned dining halls and to assist in making decisions that will provide the best possible service to our customers. We have taken the survey a step further this past year and asked Student Affairs Assessment to provide a supplemental analysis and visualization of the data collected by the NACUFS survey. The SA Assessment analysis provided qualitative responses incorporated into the quantitative data and analyzes the NACUFS survey tool itself. SA Assessment examined the NACUFS survey tool by providing both exploratory and factor analyses. They completed a reliability analysis of the proposed scales, and coded the open-‐ended responses and then incorporated them into the quantitative analysis. The NACUFS survey provided findings of ways in which items correlated with a single question asking respondents about their overall satisfaction. SA Assessment utilized the raw data and created a composite score of overall satisfaction based on the participants’ combined satisfaction of all of the variables to include food, menu, service, cleanliness, dining environment, and sustainability. While the NACUFS Survey performed a linear regression analysis to view predictors of the single question, “how satisfied overall are students with the dining halls,” SA Assessment created a new variable of overall mean satisfaction and then performed a linear regression analysis to find out which items actually contributed the most to each person’s overall satisfaction. Service Satisfaction and Food Satisfaction were the most important predictors of Total Satisfaction according to the linear regression analysis. While Total Importance correlated significantly with Total Satisfaction it was not found to be a strong predictor of Total Satisfaction. It accounted for only 4.5% of the variance in Satisfaction. The NACUFS Survey did not provide data regarding ways in which priorities and satisfaction vary by population. SA Assessment created an interactive version so that we are able to analyze differences in satisfaction and importance based on demographics. SA Assessment also added the diet type demographic which was not considered by the NACUFS Survey. A significant observation in comparing the NACUFS Survey results to the supplemental analysis is that based on the importance to satisfaction ratio what students say is most important to them is not significantly connected with their overall dining experience. In analyzing the NACUFS Survey alone one could interpret the results to be less than positive. However, using the interactive priority matrix allows us to factor in other variables that affect the initial results. This new data will enable us to determine what will optimize students’ overall dining experience.
