• Review a sample of the SharePoint trace logs.
• Go through Central Administration manually or use PowerShell to gather assessment information.
• Visually review the SharePoint farm being evaluated for web part usage, branding customizations, etc.
• Document the findings of the assessment for use as the base of an upgrade/migration strategy, health and usage analysis, or SharePoint project roadmap.

• Where are your workflows?
• Review features, web parts, custom templates, etc. for compatibility.
• Involve your site owners and administrators in the upgrade/migration process and communication plans.

• Establish a baseline configuration and capture it!
• Use the Best Practices report to locate objects that could critically impact a migration/upgrade.
• Use the Extract WSP functionality to download solutions you may not have the source code to.
• Save the farm configuration as an AutoSPInstaller XML configuration file.
• Make the selections to capture workflows, content types, solutions, etc. can be set in the “Default Load Options” tab of the SPDocKit configuration options dialog.
• SharePoint objects are often linked together and must be migrated together (workflows, workflow history and workflow tasks).
• Use the “Snapshot” functionality to automatically generate SharePoint configuration reports.
• Capture Windows Application event logs and SharePoint trace logs in a single location.
• Use the permissions reports to identify orphan users, groups without users, user specific permissions, etc.
