Purpose: The present study aims to, Examine possible correlations between burnout and social environment; Investigate differences with regards to the levels of burnout in nursing professionals working in General and Mental hospitals respectively. Material and methods: A cohort of 139 nurses was recruited from General and Mental hospitals located within the broader area of Athens. From the total sample, 42 were men and 97 women with a mean age of 39.9 years of life. We used the following questionnaires: Maslach Burnout Inventory and MSPSS to assess social support. Results: The results indicated the effect that social support has on decreasing the levels of burnout (p <0.01) in nursing professionals . In addition, according the results there is a statistically significant correlation between age, education level and whether the staff carries out administrative duties or not in assessment of burnout. Conclusions: Social support and socio-demographic factors appear to affect the levels of burnout syndrome of nurses in Psychiatric Demographic makeup: There were 97 females (69.8%) and 42 males (30.2%). Participants ages ranged from 23-59 years with a mean of 39.89 . Working settings: Mental hospitals 44.6% and General Hospitals 55.4%. Conclusions: Social support and socio-demographic factors appear to affect the levels of burnout syndrome of nurses in Psychiatric and General Hospital.

Demographic makeup:There were 97 females (69.8%) and 42 males (30.2%). Participants ages ranged from 23-59 years with a mean of 39.89 .Working settings: Mental hospitals 44.6% and General Hospitals 55.4%. Educational status of the sample was: high school degree 33.1%, Higher Education 59% and 7.9%.
