Why Asset Based Approaches?
Asset Based Approaches can empower individuals, groups, and communities to respond positively to adverse
circumstances and conditions.
Asset Based Approaches draw on the strengths, skills and potential of individuals and communities to bring
about change.
Asset Based Approaches help to build trust, focuses on what matters, develops the capacity of local people to
find local solutions to local problems.
What is meant by Asset Based Approaches?
Asset Based Approaches offer a dramatic alternative to traditional “needs based” approaches.
The approach is based on the principle of identifying and mobilising individual and community “assets” as
opposed to focussing on “deficits”.
Asset Based Approaches are based on the principles of inclusion, participation, ownership and control.
Processes which generate transformation, resilience and empowerment.
Benefits
Asset Based Approaches maintain that building on individual and community strengths is likely to inspire
positive action for sustainable change.
Asset Based Approaches promote the development of self-esteem, confidence, coping strategies, skills,
knowledge and personal resources.
Asset Based Approaches can be used in many areas such as health and well-being, environment, and
economic development, empowering individuals and communities to be in control of their futures.
Its principles in practice create the conditions whereby genuine partnerships and mutually - beneficial outcomes
can be achieved.
