    (1) Physical Evidence

    You arrive at the scene of a burglary. The victim tells you that he came home at 10 p.m.

    and discovered that his door was unlocked. Suddenly, the intruder ran past him and out

    the front door. The intruder knocked him down in the process. Thereafter, the victimimmediately called the police.

    The victim describes the intruder as a teenage male of average height and build. He wasunable to see any details because it was dark and the intruders face was obstructed with a

    hood. You secure the scene and begin looking for physical evidence. You notice that a

    window looks like it had been broken and a screen removed.

    About 10 minutes later, a fellow officer comes to the scene with a teenage male in the

    back of the squad car. The officer asks the victim if he can identify the intruder. Thevictim walks to the squad car and says, Yes, thats him.

    The officer tells you that you can stop looking for evidence. The case is closed.

    How do you respond to you fellow officer? What more should you do as a criminalinvestigator?

    You arrive at the stop a vehicle on the highway for driving erratically. The driver isshaking, obviously restless and is unable to stand still and respond to questioning. You

    notice that she is sweating profusely and breathing hard. You suspect that the driver is

    under the influence of an illicit substance.

    From the drivers symptoms, what type of drug would you suspect that she had used?

    You search the vehicle and find a small plastic canister containing a powdery substance.How would you identify the substance?

    You arrive at the scene of drug bust. It appears that the suspect was making drugs in the

    kitchen of an apartment. You return to the laboratory with samples and use thin-layerchromatography (TLC) to identify the substances.
