Assignment 1 – Exploring Brickwork and Blockwork Principles and Techniques

Scenario:

Your are a bricklayer working on a Construction Site and your Site Manager has asked for sample panels of cavity walling to show a client for approval. The work will be measured with quality control comparisons.

You should explain the tools, materials and equipment you will be using and also complete a risk assessment.

Grading Criteria Attempt 1 Referral

P1 - Explain how tools, materials and equipment are used in specific brickwork and blockwork tasks. You need to include 5 setting out tools, 5 types of hand tools and equipment, 2 types of mortar, 2 types of bricks and 2 types of blocks.

P2 - Explain how to SAFELY use the tools, materials and equipment mentioned in P1 and why you should use them safely.

P3 – Carry out a risk assessment prior to to starting the brickwork and block work activities.

BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment

Unit 7: Exploring Brickwork and Blockwork

P4- Comply with safe working practices including the use of appropriate PPE- (Personal Protective Equipment.)

P5- Construct a cavity wall to the client’s specification –( 9 courses of brick and 3 courses of block.)

M1 – Justify the selection of tools, materials and equipment for the client’s job in P5.

M2 - Construct a cavity wall to the client’s specification as in P5- however the wall must be Plumb, Level and to Gauge and have a face plane deviation within a tolerance of 10mm.

D1 – Evaluate the alternative materials for a specified brickwork and blockwork task.

D2 - Construct a cavity wall to the client’s specification with a central feature in the brick face using contrasting or recessed bricks. The wall must be Plumb, Level and to Gauge and have a face plane deviation within a tolerance of 5mm. Brickwork must be clean and all uniform joints.

Notice to Candidate

The work you submit for assessment must be your own. If you copy from someone else or allow another candidate to copy from you, or if you cheat in any other way, you may be disqualified from at least the subject concerned.

Declaration by candidate: I have read and understood the Notice to Candidate (above). I have produced the attached work without any help apart from that which has been stated on this sheet.

SIGNED: DATE:

P1 + P2Explain how tools, materials and equipment are used for brickwork and blockwork tasks and provide supported reasons as to when they would be selected in different situations.

You must include:

5 setting out tools,

5 types of hand tools and equipment,

2 types of mortar,

2 types of bricks,

2 types of blocks.

A good source of evidence for this criteria would be a table with a photo of the tools/materials, the name of it and an explanation of it’s use. See example below and create a table for each of the above criteria.

Explanation including when/how it can be used

P3 To achieve P3 you need to conduct a risk assessment prior to starting the building work for Mrs Jones.

Identifying hazards is the first step in preventing accidents. A HAZARD is something that could cause harm. For example, cement dust could cause an irritation if it enters the eyes or lungs.

A RISK is the result of any accident or event caused by the hazard. For example, burns to the eye caused by the cement dust.

An example of a risk assessment form that you can use is below.

P4 Safe working practices CHECKLIST For teachers use only

Completed? YES or NO

Does the trainee adopt safe working practices when working?

Do they wash tools after use?

Do they keep their work area tidy and free from trip hazards?

Do they behave safely and appropriately in the workshop at all times?

Do they take responsibility of their own and others safety in the workshop?

Wears appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as steel toe caps, overalls, ear defenders, safety glasses when carrying out practical tasks.

Do they store their tools away safely and correctly after use?

Do they follow the workshop Code of Conduct at all times?

M1 & D1 MERIT

P4 ACHIEVED? Y / N

To achieve M1 you will need to select a specific construction situation and JUSTIFY which of the tools, materials and equipment would be selected and explain, with reasons, why you would choose these items.

Distinction

To achieve D1 you you will need to expand upon your work from P1 and M1 and EVALUATE alternative materials you could use in your chosen construction situation. You need to explain why these materials would be suitable and appropriate to complete the work mentioned in M1.

How do I achieve an M1 and D1?

Key literacy tip: To EVALUATE effectively try and use words such as: …….

In comparison to……, an alternative to………., in contrast to……..,

Key literacy tip: To JUSTIFY effectively try and use words such as: …….

For the purpose of…, for instance..., in order to…., the reason being…,

An example of a paragraph that is JUSTIFYING and EVALUATING to achieve M1 and D1 criteria:

To mix my mortar I would use a cement mixer the reason being is so the mortar is mixed to a nice consistency and also it is much quicker In comparison to mixing it up in a wheelbarrow. I could use different coloured sand as an alternative material when mixing up. This would give my wall a different look which the client may prefer, for example yellow sand in contrast to red sand.

Scenario:Mrs Jones requires a cavity wall to be built to 9 courses of face brickwork with an internal skin of concrete blocks of 3 courses to a height of 675mm.

P5To achieve P5 you need to construct a cavity wall for Mrs Jones. The wall must be 3 courses of blockwork high with 9 courses of face brickwork. The brickwork must be laid in stretcher bond and be finished with a bucket handle joint.

M2

P5 ACHIEVED? Y / N

To achieve M2 you will need to construct a cavity wall to the client’s specification as in P5- however the wall must be Plumb, Level and to Gauge and have a face plane deviation within a tolerance of 10mm.

Self Assessment or

Teacher Assessment

Is the wall plumb on all faces and returns within a tolerance of 10mm?

Has the brickwork and blockwork got full and uniform bed and perp joints and pointed with a bucket handle finished?

Has both the brick and block walls got a face plane deviation within a tolerance of 10mm?

Are the height and length of the walls accurate within a tolerance of 10mm?

Are the walls level and to to GAUGE within a tolerance of 10mm?

Have wall ties been used correctly and at no more than 900mm horizontal spacing and 450mm vertical?

D2

M2 ACHIEVED? Y / N

To achieve D2 you need to construct a cavity wall to the client’s specification as in P5 and M2- however the wall must be Plumb, Level and to Gauge and have a face plane deviation all within a tolerance of 5mm. The wall must also have a central feature using contrasting or recessed face bricks.

Central Feature Designs

D2 ACHIEVED? Y / N

Use this page to design your feature in the wall for help with D2.

First find an example of a central feature in brickwork.

Design three ideas that you can build for your assessment piece.
