    ASSIGNMENT #2 PAD 739

Due Monday February 11, 2013 by midnight

***NOTE: There will be 2 quizzes for Chapter 1 and 2 on Patton et al but I am waiting for

access to Blackboard. I will let you know when that happens and when the quizzes will beposted. You will have ample time from when the quizzes are put up to when they are due.

    1. Read Chapter 1 in Patton et al.

    2. Watch the TED video (Eli Pariser)--Who is Eli Pariser? What is his message? You do not haveto write the answers to these questions but in the spirit of critical thinking you should be curious

as to who he is/his message. Find out.

    3. Post your responses to the questions A, B, and C below:

    a. What is your reaction to this video?

Some introductory comments to expectations for your participation in the class: this is

your class. In the U.K. they say one takes their degree you do not get a degree. Own yourlearning. Answer these questions thoughtfully and with some depththat doesnt mean it has to

be a page longlength does not equal quality. Give more than I was shocked by this Thinkabout this video. Maybe you have to watch it 2 or 3 times. Really listen to what he is saying.

What are the implications of his message for modern society? For children born and raised on theinternet? What policy issues are raised by Mr. Parisers comments? Other things to think about

(and comment on if desired): Have you seen TED videos before? Who started TED and why?Are their TED videos on your policy topic/interest areas? Are there other outlets like TED?

    b. Make at least 1 connection between Patton Chapter 1 and Eli Parisers talk.

Take the Critical Thinking quiz. Did you answer any of the questions correctly? What are the

implications of the results of this quiz? If you were telling someone who has never heard ofcritical thinking before, how would you say this quiz exemplifies or demonstrates the concept of

critical thinking or the implications of critical thinking?

    c. Make at least 1 connection between the critical thinking quiz, Patton s Chapter 1, and

    Eli Parisers talk.

***Our class will only be successful if you fully participate. Remember if we were meeting inperson you would spend 2.5 or so hours in class, plus time on readings and assignments. We arestarting out slowly but will quickly build to more in-depth discussions and assignments. You all

have important experiences and ideasMake your time count!
