Camera shots

Establishing shots • An establishing shot is a shot to show where the scene is being set and it explain to

the audience where the shot has been taken and give the audience more understanding of the scene.

This is a shot taken of my aunties outside kitchen and the side pool.

Wide shot • Is when the camera takes one photo that contains a lot of information. It could

also be a shot of everyone coming together like a dinning table.

- This is a wide shot of the table.

- It enables you to see everything on it and around it.

Long shot • A long shot it when the camera takes a shot of the characters whole body showing

their action and movement.

- This is a long shot of my aunty walking.

- It shows her whole action and its clear to the audience what she is doing.

- Its captured her whole body and action all together.

Mid/medium shot• A shot that is taken from the characters waist up usually taken when the character

is talking.

- Here is a mid shot of my mum, taken when she was talking.

- Here the audience can see that she is communicating with the person in front of her.

- Either she is smiling and listen or taking whiles smiling at them.

Close up shot• A close up is taken to show detail usually of a face.

- This is a shot of me as a close up to show detail on my face.

- The close up also shows the emotion that I’m trying to portray to the audience.

- the close up also shows eye contact, making it feel as if I’m looking straight at the audience.

Extreme close up • A shot taken extremely close to an object or a part of the body to show the

audience a deeper information and understanding of the object.

- This is picture that I took of a cup filled with cold water.

- You can see the detail of he writing on the cup.

- And also the details of the water vapour around the cup.

Point of view • Point of view is a shot taken from the character outwards to show the audience

the characters perspective and what the character can see. This helps the audience engage with the character more.

- This is a picture taken of my mum and her friend.

- The cup in front is a way to show the audience my point of view.

- I am allowing them to see through my eyes and understand the scenario.

Over the shoulder • This is usually taken when the two characters are talking to each other, it captures

both of the characters at the same time. The character that we are looking of their shoulder, usually takes up 1/3 of the screen.

- This is a shot taken over my mums friends shoulder and my mum is in front.

- With the showing of my mums eye contact , the audience can see that is talking to him.

Two shot• Two shot is when a shot is taken of two people of objects showing the relationship

between them or them interacting with each other.

- This is a picture taken of me and my cousin in law talking.

- Here we are discussing what nail polish colour looks better.

- There is a sense of communication because of the direction we are sat in and the direction we are looking in.

Over head shot • A shot taken form the character over them to show detail in what they are doing

and the things surrounding them.

- Here is a picture of my mums friend sitting down.

- As it is shown he is thinking or looking into the distance.

- It also shows where he is sitting and his surrounding.

Angle shots

Low shot • A low shot is taken to make the character seem bigger or much more aggressive

than they actually are. It also makes the character seem more intimidating and the audience feel as if the characters are taking all their space.

- This is a shot taken of my mum and her friend trying to look over powering.

- The darkness in the picture make them seem a little bit more intimidating.

- The serious look on their faces make the seem much more aggressive and questioning.

High angle • High angle shots are taken to make an object or a character seem much more

smaller and vulnerable.

- This is a high angle shot of my mum.

- The fact that she is looking up with an innocent look makes her seem even more vulnerable.

- The high angle makes her seem much more smaller even though she is already tiny.

Canted or oblique angle• Its used to make the shot seem tilted and can often confuse the audience.

- This is a shot taken of my mum laughing her head of.

- This is tilted because it shows the confusion of the character because they don’t know why she is laughing so hard, so they tilt their head showing the audience that there are confused.

Movement

Pan • This movement can be used to show the surrounding or more information about

the environment and want to give the audience a view of the area. The movement is from right to left or left to right.

Tilt • This movement is used up and down to show information about something tall or

long.

Track • This is when the camera captures the characters every move and moves side to

side is a steady position.

- This is various shots taken of my mums friend showing that he is walking forward and the camera is capturing his movement.

Zoom • This movement is a movement that will move closer to a person or an object

making in look bigger as the camera moves in towards it.

Revers zoom • This is when the camera moves away from a character or an object going from big

to small.

Composition

Balance • When a shot has a balanced composition either with shapes, size or colour.

- This is a picture of my uncle and his parents.

- Even though their not all the same size, both my uncle and his dad balance the size of his mum.

Symmetry • This is when the object on the screen can be split in half and still both sides would

be the same.

- This is a shot taken of an apple.

- If this apple were to be cut in half both of its sides would equally be the same

Asymmetry • This is if you split and object, person or a picture in half the sides would not be

equal.

- This is a shot taken of a town in Austria.

- If you split this picture in half both of the sides will not be equal .

Shallow focus• This is when the object in front is much more focused than the object behind it.

- This is a picture taken of a can of coke in front of a chair.

- The coke is most concentrated and the chair is blurred out.

- The coke can is clearer than the chair.

Deep focus • This is when everything in the shot is focused revealing to the audience that

everything in the scene is important.

- This is a picture of a town in Austria.

- Everything in this picture is in focus because everything in this shot is important.

Focus pulls • When the camera adjust to focus on an object in front or the one in the

background.

- In the first shot the pepper holder is much more concentrated.

- In the second shot the chimney is much more concentrated than the pepper holder.
