4DX

AT FANNIN ELEMENTARY

THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION

Another model that we can follow to make a mobile technology change at Fannin is 4DX, the 4 Disciplines of Execution. I’ve set out what the plan would look like on our campus and why.

Discipline 1 – focus on the wildly important goal (WIG)

Discipline 2 – act on the lead measures

Discipline 3 – keep a compelling scoreboard

Discipline 4 – create a cadence of accountability

I’ve set 2 WIGs for Fannin 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers to focus on.

WIG #1Discipline 1:

• Use mobile technology to do online research and learning on a daily basis by

December of 2017.

Discipline 2:

1. During the months of August and September, students will use mobile technology to

research/learn online once every two weeks in 2 subjects of your choice.

2. During the month of October, students will use mobile technology to research/learn online

once every two weeks in all subjects.

3. During the month of November, students will use mobile technology to research/learn online

once a week in all subjects.

4. During the month of December, students will use mobile technology to research/learn online

once a day in all subjects.

WIG #1Discipline 3:

• A monthly chart will be displayed in

each teacher’s classroom so that

they can check off on a biweekly,

weekly, or daily basis (depending on

the month) that they have completed

the online research and learning

aspect of teaching to the students.

Teachers will compare scoreboards

at their weekly meetings.

Discipline 4:

• Teachers meet on a weekly basis to

discuss lessons and planning. During

these meetings, teachers will discuss if

they met the goal. Teachers will also

discuss what worked and what didn’t

work so that improvements for the next

week can be made.

WIG #2Discipline 1:• Use mobile technology as an element of assessment on a weekly basis for 3

school subjects by May of 2018.

Discipline 2:1. For the months of August and September, students and teachers will focus on getting to know the device.

1 presentation or assessment will be required every 3 weeks. Teachers will choose 1 subject for the assessment.

2. For October, November, and December, students will use mobile technology to create a presentation or show knowledge acquisition every 2 weeks. Teachers will choose 1 subject for the assessment.

3. During January and February, students will use mobile technology to demonstrate understanding or create presentations with 2 evidences of learning every 2 weeks. Teachers will choose 2 different subjects, one for each evidence of learning.

4. For the months of March and April, students will use mobile technology to create 3 projects in 3 different subjects every 2 weeks.

5. During the month of May, students will use mobile technology to generate 3 productions in 3 different subjects every week.

WIG #2Discipline 3:

• 3 bar graphs will be displayed on a bulletin board in the teacher’s lounge (one for each grade level participating in the mobile technology initiative). Each teacher will be represented on the graph with an icon of their choosing. When a teacher uses mobile technology to complete a project or presentation with their class, their icon moves up on the bar graph.

Discipline 4:• Teachers meet on a weekly basis to

discuss lessons and planning. During these meetings, teachers will discuss if they met the goal. Teachers will also discuss what worked and what didn’t work so that improvements for the next week can be made.

• During these weekly meetings, teachers will compare their place on the bar graph. The first teacher to meet the goal for the week or month will get a “jean day” ticket. Opportunities for other rewards will be reviewed in the spring semester.

SO, HOW WILL THIS HAPPEN?The 4DX model tells us that there are 5 stages of change.

Stage 1 – Getting Clear

Stage 2 – Launch

Stage 3 – Adoption

Stage 4 – Optimization

Stage 5 – Habits

I’ve outlined how I believe the 5 stages will work for us at Fannin in the next slide

and a half.

• First, the reason for this goal has to be clearly defined. WHY? To create 21st

century learners that have opportunities to be creative, authentic, and published.

• Second, we must start the week that school begins. If we begin the school year

by using the mobile technology for research/learning and assessment, it will be

routine later in the school year.

SO, HOW WILL THIS HAPPEN? CONT.

• Third, realize that it will take time for everyone to buy into the WIGs and stop

resisting. Continue holding your team teachers accountable. Ask questions and

get help from myself or the district’s instructional technologist.

• Fourth, you will want to change the WIG and lead measures to more challenging

targets. WOO HOO! We’re almost there. We’ve taken what seemed like an

impossible task, accomplished it, and are now wanting to make it even more

stimulating.

• Finally, this concept will become a habit, something you strive to do every day

without the mindset of a competition or goal. Now, it’s time to start over and

set a new goal!
