Good Artefact vs. Bad Artefact
“Sage on the Stage” vs.
“Guide on the Side”
Complicated LanguageLanguage that is not easily understood by students does not
encourage them to learn. At the level of maths in this video students will not understand the complex language used.
•Poor ExplanationThere is a lack of explanation as to why students would, say divide by 5 here, in each of the examples. If students do not know what they are doing already they would NOT understand.
•Follows SyllabusAlthough this video appears to be of poor quality, in some cases it does align with the linear algebra syllabus, only presented poorly.
• Poor WritingWriting that is hard to understand is often ignored by students or forgotten easily.
• Poor LayoutThe examples in this artefact are poorly set out and hard to follow. Students will find it hard to concentrate on and follow the working.
No real world examples have been used in this
video, it does not connect students to relevant information
that they can use.
• Real World Connections
This game allows students to see how mathematics is used in the real world. Adapting mathematics to situations that students can relate to and see the connection between the two.
• Higher Order Thinking
This website encourages students to demonstrate higher order thinking to solve real world problems and develop mathematics knowledge
• Easy to Understand Instructions
This game has easy to follow instructions that are self explanatory as to why you, in this case minus the four to the five. It is a hands on approach to learning.
• Not a Basic Lesson
Adds variation to a students standard lesson. The website is an excellent addition to any syllabus outcome. Making the learning far more involved.
So what does make a good teacher?
It comes down to our own opinion, doesn’t it?
Well I believe a good teacher acts as a guide on the side, helping students when needed and
prompting them in the right direction.
NOT acting as a sage on the sage, giving students order with no actual teaching.
