Remarks (Comments and Recommendations) The teacher clearly shows a good management of the language. She obviously knows exactly what she is teaching and also, how to help her students to understand the grammar structure she is teaching. One point of the section 2, Aims of the lesson, was out of reality since the students are all retired people. However, I also think it is a good idea to encourage imagination. It is excellent that the teacher forecast the possible interference of L1 in this particular lesson. That way, she was prepared to help her students understand the grammar form being taught. Moreover, she used different approaches to give everyone the opportunity to learn according to their own learning style. Furthermore, the teacher uses variety of activities and exercises. Regarding the teacher’s use of relevant reference sources I think it is not very clear how she used references, or what relevant points helped her in what way.

Remarks

SB shows that she is able to analyse language and teach a successful grammar revision lesson with a balance, variety and communicative focus in materials, tasks and activities. She uses correct terminology and adjusts her own use of language to describe the grammar (grammar tables) according to her learner group. The overall aim was appropriate, whereas some of the sub-aims were not altogether appropriate for a class of senior learners, i.e. to talk and ask about students’ own jobs using the present simple. In “Procedure” on page 4, SB says she asked students to imagine they were still at work. This was not on the lesson plan, page 7, but she solved the problem. Finally, she used the transparency (page 14) to check understanding of the forms, and thus helped her learners to deal with the problems.

Compared to the original

The experienced trainer was aware of things I was not aware about. For example, he mentions the teacher’s use of language according to the learner group. On the other hand, we both agree that having a sub-aim about her students talking about their jobs was not very good. However, the experienced teacher noted that there was a difference between the lesson plan and the procedure.
