1 Introduction
Communication and dissemination is important for the success of the Horizon 2020 project “ABRACADABRA – Assistant Buildings’ addition to Retrofit, Adopt, Cure and Develop the Actual Buildings up to zero energy, Activating a market for deep renovation”. As is the case for every EU-funded research project, dissemination plays an integral role in relaying research outcomes as well as sharing knowledge with a wider audience. Specifically in the case of the ABRACADABRA project, the project’s objective of filling the investment gap in the deep renovation sector depends on the project’s work and results being coherently and effectively communicated to stakeholders and investors.
This document aims to structure and inform the ABRACADABRA communication and dissemination activities. To achieve this, the document provides an overall communication and dissemination strategy and an indication of its expected results. Guidelines are provided regarding project identity, logo and graphical layouts. It identifies and defines target groups of communication and dissemination activities and defines the tools and products to be employed in communicating the project.
This document provides a frame of reference for the various communication levels (European/ national/ regional) and the roles and responsibilities attributed to each partner as part of the communication work package. Guidelines are also provided for the implementation of communication and dissemination actions. It also includes a template for collection of relevant events to be organized by the consortium.
The communication strategy was prepared under task 5.1, the main responsibility of which lies with the ICLEI European Secretariat (hereafter ICLEI) in the framework of work package 5, the main responsibility of which lies with D'Appolonia S.P.A. (hereafter DAPP). The communication and dissemination tasks of the project (WP5) will run from month 2 to month 36. Exploitation of results, particularly via the web platform, will be ensured for at least 2 years after the project end. A detailed plan will be provided with the final report to increase sustainability of the action beyond the project life time. The communication and dissemination strategy will undergo a mid-term evaluation and be updated as applicable on an annual basis to respond to the demands of an evolving project.

2 Communication and dissemination: Objectives and Goals
The main communication objectives of the ABRACADABRA project can be summarised as follows:
Raise awareness
The project communication aims to raise awareness among public and private stakeholders of the value and urgency of accelerating the market towards the Nearly Zero Energy Buildings target.
Further, the project aims to effectively communicate the economic and practical benefits of pairing deep renovation with Assistant Buildings’ Additions according to the ABRACADABRA approach.
Finally, the project communication aims to foster a dialogue among stakeholders along the whole value chain of the building sector and to highlight the added value of the European dimension in the buildings renovation field.
Trigger action
The communication activities are intended to educate and ultimately encourage investment in deep renovation for the existing built environment in Europe.
Furthermore, the project aims to influence public policy on a local, regional, national and European level towards the wider uptake of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings.
Advance knowledge
The project will provide training and online information platforms to better inform its stakeholders and the wider public of the importance of retrofitting Europe’s outdated buildings to increase its energy efficiency and to equip them with the tools and information required to engage with the sector with greater confidence.
In this respect, the assumption is that the whole Consortium should commit to implementing dissemination activities and proactively seek out dissemination opportunities and make relevant dissemination channels available, as well as contributing to presenting project results publicly and in scientific publications.
Dissemination activities will be undertaken from the start of the project, and will be aimed at all relevant stakeholders. To this end, a communication strategy has been devised, which is based on:
Definition of the target audience
Identification of the media to be used
3 Key Messages
3.1 Value Proposition
The value proposition of the project communication should focus on the benefits each target group will receive through involvement in the project:

6 Visual identity
A visual identity has been developed for the project, which informs the design of all of the project’s online and print outputs. A logo and colour scheme has been designed for the ABRACADABRA project to be used in all communications products and in official documents. The design of the logo, website and document templates including headers and tables are corresponding and apply the same colours, angles, lines and fonts, ensuring a recognisable and coherent visual identity for the project.
A design package is planned including a web template, e-newsletter template, publication/report template and roll-up banner template. A PowerPoint template and basic Word template has been designed and shared with project partners. The design should be applied in all cases where partners represent the project whether in publications, presentations or in deliverables. The official language of the project is English.
6.1 Logo
Figure 4: Primary ABRACADABRA logo
The logo depicts the project’s title. This shape suggests both a building and a wizard’s hat, in reference to the topic and the title of the project. The overall result is the visualisation of a shared EU process where the synergy between the old and new (the assisted and assistant buildings) is represented by three arcs of 28 stars evoking the EU Member

9 Timeline
Communication and dissemination activities will be undertaken from the beginning of the project, while the maintenance of the results (with particular emphasis on the platform) will be ensured for at least 2 years after the project end, with a detailed plan to be provided with the final report, to increase sustainability of the action beyond the project life time.
This version of D 5.1 is done for submission in M6. Customised dissemination material will be developed and partners will be asked to provide feedback of their dissemination actions. These activities will be deeply described within D5.1 that will be resubmitted firstly in M12 and secondly in M24.
Given the wide variety of target countries, housing codes and regulations, and quality of building stock, communication priorities must have an impact on the market according to a variety of timelines:
Short term (1-2 years)
o Awareness rising among building owners and occupants
o Special emphasis of those most likely to renovate
Medium term (2-3 years)
o Promotion of technologies and shift in professional practices
Assistant Buildings’ addition to Retrofit, Adopt, Cure And Develop the Actual Buildings up to zeRo energy, Activating a market for deep renovation

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 696126
The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation
o Concerted effort to convince those with some resistance to the idea of retrofitting due to financial, aesthetic, or functional arguments
Long term (3+ years)
o Standards and regulation
o Education and training
o Institutionalisation of programmes
