students with Severe Disabilities as well as a Special Needs Preschool Teacher

• Since 1999 working in Assistive Technology field and with PATINS Project

About the PATINS Project

• The PATINS Project is a state-wide technical assistance network for the provision of assistive/accessible technology for assisting local educational agencies in the utilization and creation of accessible learning environments and instructional materials.



• The PATINS Project provides a range of support services for impacting both the organizational capacity and the professional capabilities of Indiana’s local educational agencies in serving students with unique learning needs. These services include:Operation of the Indiana Center for Accessible Instructional Materials (ICAM) www.icam.k12.in.us

AT – the definition

The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device.

NIMASAccessible Materials Act

• All k-12 Textbooks published after 8/06 must have the book and all supplemental materials on file at the national NIMAC.

• Students in Indiana who fall under the Chaffee Copyright Amendment (blind, visually impaired or print disabled) can access the book in the format that they need.


NIMAS

• Non-Chaffee students (basically the LD population) can possibly be covered in Indiana if their IEP demonstrate the need.

• Indiana has purchased Read:OutLoud, a text-to-speech software, to assist in addressing this issue.

• Primary formats that will be available• Braille• Large Print (being phased out)• Text to Speech• Audio

• Braille and large print are produced at the Miami Correctional Center by inmates.
