STRUCTURE:

The Associate of Science Degree (ASD) Programme focuses on preparing students to qualify for matriculation into a

Bachelor of Science Degree in the area of focus. It has the flexibility to enable both the GCE “A” Level, CXC CAPE and

non-GCE “A” level students to obtain an Associate Degree in General Studies, with a combination of courses that will cater

to the particular needs and interests of the students.

Students must pursue their studies as follows:

eight General Education courses totaling 22 credits;

compulsory concentration courses to satisfy the minimum Associate of Science Degree requirements must

total 36 credits

one laboratory course as per area of concentration, over the four semesters totalling 3 credits (45 hours)

OR

in the case of students pursuing two science concentrations, each science concentration should be accompanied by a

laboratory component which will run for four semesters, and at the end 3 credits will be attained for each laboratory

course giving a total of 6 credits

choice of two compulsory electives for personal growth amounting to a maximum of 6 credits.

This amounts to a total of 67 to 70 credits for attainment of an Associate of Science Degree.

Three credit courses encompasses 45 hours of contact allocated as follows:– two credits for 30 hours of theoretical

classroom instruction and one credit for 15 hours of practical activities.

All associate degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics must have the following:

Eight general education courses = 22 credit hours:

ENG2111 – Introduction to Academic Writing (3 credit hours)

ENG2122 – Communication in Organisations & Public Communication (3 credit hours)

MTH2111 – College Algebra (3 credit hours)

MTH2126 – Mathematics for Science Students (3 credit hours)

MTH2214 – Calculus I (3 credit hours)

CIS2110 – Introduction to Computers (3 credit hours)

TCI2111 – TCI Studies (2 credit hours)

RES2111 – Introduction to Research (2 credit hours)

Compulsory Laboratory Requirement for each major/core program (BIO, CHM, PHY = 3 credits each)

Laboratory courses are determined by areas of concentrations

Laboratory courses will be two per semester

Each lab course on alternating weeks for three hours each week

This amounts to 15 hours per semester for each course = 1 credit

Minimum of five labs per semester per course (max. 10)

Labs in the first semester of the first year are not compulsory, but if done should be added to the second

Page 2: ASSO IATE of S IEN E DEGREES iology, hemistry, Physics ... · ASSO IATE of S IEN E DEGREES iology, hemistry, Physics, Mathematics. STRUCTURE: The Associate of Science Degree (ASD)

semester labs for credit. This means that in the first semester of the first year the lecturer can choose to

do only labs that are absolutely critical to the learning process

At the end of the program students would have completed 45 to 51 hours of labs per area of

concentration, over a period of 15 to 17 weeks

Compulsory Research Project for a major/core program (BIO, CHM, PHY, MTH or IT = 3 credits)

Done over two semesters; the first semester culminating in a complete project proposal and the second in a

project presentation

Two hours per week for twenty-three weeks = 46 hours

Two compulsory electives totaling 6 credit hours, such as:

Any additional science course, e.g.:

Courses in the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Marine Biology,

Nursing

Courses from Mathematics and Information Technology faculty, e.g.:

Courses in the departments of Computer Science, Mathematics.

Courses from the Humanities faculty, e.g.:

Courses in the departments of Language Arts (French, Spanish), Social Sciences.

Courses from the business faculty

Courses from the Hospitality faculty

Courses from the building technology faculty.
