program should be given a strong consideration to stay here and assimilate legally into the only country many of them really know. Let us pray for immigration reform, and that wisdom, knowledge, understanding and counsel, along with the virtue prudence, guide the elected officials to make choices that honor our country’s heritage. This coming Monday, January 22nd, the Catholic Church in the United States has directed that Catholics would make it a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. It is the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade, which made abortions legal in 1973. The Church extends God’s mercy to those who had participated in any way in an abortion. This is the Gospel which Jesus preached 2,000 years ago. But God also calls for a conversion of hearts, as He did in Nineveh through the prophet Jonah. May our nation, and the world, convert from being a ‘Culture of Death’, as St. John Paul II called it, to being a ‘People of Life’. Prayer and fasting are what’s needed first of all, but we must also make our voices heard for those who do not have a voice. Let us pray this week, and always, for an end to abortion and for healing for those wounded by this tragedy. On the feast of St. Agnes, January 21st, I can announce that Archbishop Lucas has signed the sale agreement for the property of St. Agnes. We will turn over the possession of it on Wednesday, January 31st. As I have written before, it is a sad moment to have to say Goodbye to a beautiful church and school, along with the rectory and the convent buildings, that have served this South Omaha Catholic community for so long, but it is time. As far as I understand, the buyer will begin demolition of the property pretty quickly after taking possession of it. Again, please pray for the success of this transaction. St. Agnes, pray for us! The next training for the youth who wish to serve at our Masses on Sundays and special occasions will be this Saturday, January 27th, at 4:00 p.m. in Guadalupe church. It will last one hour, and a parent is asked to stay for the training. If you have any questions, please call Fr. Rafael at the parish office. The training will be mostly in Spanish. May the good Lord send His grace down upon us, as well as some sunshine.

Jesus calls His first disciples in today’s Gospel reading from Mark. Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John leave their trade as fishermen and follow Jesus. Jesus had been proclaiming the Gospel of God. These four Jewish fishermen would have heard about God’s promise as they worshipped in the synagogue and heard the Hebrew Scriptures (which we call the Old Testament) proclaimed. God reveals that He would send a Savior. The promise of God was and is that those who obey His commands and follow the one He sends will be part of His Kingdom. There was hope planted in the hearts of the Jewish people that the Messiah would save them from oppression and they would have freedom. But Jesus’ message contained so much more. He would save them from the oppression and slavery of sin, and not just a political government. So, He includes in His first preaching that repentance is needed. It is only by our turning away from sin that we can know the freedom of holiness as disciples of Jesus. This past week, the Church offered prayers for migrants and immigrants. The Church prays that people would be able to stay in their home country among their own families and with all their rich traditions. The Church prays that a family may earn enough to have a proper home, a safe environment, access to medical care, access to education for their children, and the means to save enough for their retirement. But if this is not possible for a family because of their environment, whether from bad government, violence from bad people in their society, or pollution which sickens or poisons them, then the Church says there should be the right to migrate to a place where they will have a better future. The Church teaches that countries who have the ability to accept immigrants and integrate them need to do so, along with helping to change the structures of the home country so that the family would not have to leave their homeland in the first place. The bishops of our country have asked that the elected officials provide for a means to integrate those who are among us so they may work to provide for their families and contribute to our society in a legal way. This needs to be balanced with the right and duty of those same officials to protect the citizens by controlling the borders. It is a far more complicated issue than what is able to be written here, but it can be said that the Dreamers under the DACA

Es sólo por nuestro apartado del pecado que podemos conocer la l ibertad de santidad, como discípulos de Jesús. Esta semana pasada, la Iglesia ofreció oraciones para emigrantes e inmigrantes. La Iglesia reza para que la gente pueda quedarse en su país de origen entre sus propias familias y con todas sus ricas tradiciones. La Iglesia reza para que una familia puede ganar lo suficiente para tener un buen hogar, en un entorno seguro, acceso a la atención médica, acceso a la educación para sus hijos, y los medios para ahorrar lo suficiente para su jubilación. Pero si esto no es posible para una familia a causa de su entorno, ya sea desde el mal gobierno, la violencia de la gente mala en su sociedad, o contaminación que enferma o envenena, entonces la Iglesia dice que debería ser el derecho para emigrar a un lugar donde tendrán un futuro mejor. La Iglesia enseña que los países que tienen la capacidad de aceptar a los inmigrantes e integrarlos necesita hacerlo, junto con ayudar a cambiar las estructuras del país de origen a fin de que la familia no tendría que abandonar su patria en primer lugar. Latin. For this reason depictions of Saint Agnes often include a

lamb. She was a beautiful virgin who turned away all suitors, declaring that she could have no spouse but Jesus. Many young men wanted to marry her. She said that to do so would be an insult to her heavenly Spouse, that she would keep her

consecrated virginity intact, accept death, and see Christ. Living

as a Christian in the time of the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian, she was under constant threat. One

of those suitors reported her to authorities for being a Christian and denying him. For lusting over

her one suitor became blind, which she healed him with prayer. Saint

Agnes is one of the “virgin martyrs” of the church of Rome.

Parents, we have lots of good news to share with you! The Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Omaha are proud to

announce that they will be offering a bilingual education program in two of the grade schools for the 2018-19 school year. The

schools offering this program are Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School (32nd & Martha) and Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School

(36th & X). The program will be available for students in preschool, pre-K and kindergarten, and one more grade will be

added every year. This is an incredible opportunity for all students to learn and maintain a high level of Spanish, and they

will develop in their school subjects and knowledge of other cultures. There are financial aid available. Nominations to

participate in the Creighton Prep Loyola Scholars Program have also opened. This is a program for male students that begins the

summer before sixth grade. It lasts three years, and after completing the program, the students have the opportunity to receive a full scholarship to attend Creighton Prep during high

school. The first step in the process is to be nominated during fifth grade by a principal, counselor, teacher or priest. This is a unique opportunity in all of Omaha, and if you have a male student in
