Excel and PowerSchool

PowerSchool is a great student information system, but there are some times you need to work with student data outside of PowerSchool. Enter Microsoft Excel, the most powerful and underused appliation on your computer. This beginner/intermediate level course will help you organize, analyze, and share spreadsheets. We will use tools like conditional formatting, PivotTables, logical functions, and lookup functions. You will need to have Excel on your device to get the full benefits of this session. Presenter: Robin Gage This is my 16th year working in the NW Arctic. As a teacher I lived in several villages before moving to Kotzebue. I have taken up the role of district test coordinator this year, but my love for PowerSchool endures. I live in the world of standardized tests, PowerSchool and student data. I manage our 2,200 students at 13 different schools. State and federal reporting is a large part of my job. I enjoy using ASTE as a place to network with other people who do what I do. I empathize with people who are new to PowerSchool or state reporting, it is a difficult responsibility to define and learn. I hope to help

Creating a Dynamic Classroom Website

In this information age, people have become accustomed to communicating and obtaining information in an instant. Your students and their parents are no different. In this session, you will learn how to create a dynamic website that provides up-to-date information about the educational opportunities in your classroom. An updated classroom website builds trust and engagement between your classroom and the community. Even more importantly, it enrolls parents as helpers in holding students accountable for their success, and it helps them provide the support their kids need to learn. You don’t need to be an HTML expert to make a website! The website you begin during this session will be created on the free drag-and-drop website builder Weebly.com. All you need is a computer and an hour of time to produce a website worth reading! Educators of all grade levels are welcome. Presenter: Megan Gunderson Megan Gunderson is a Middle School English Teacher at Dillingham Middle School. She has previously taught multi-grade level elementary classes in the Bering Strait School District, the North Slope Borough School District, and Putnam City Schools (in suburban Oklahoma City). Graphing Your Success

Using a variety of hands on tools and large display technology, learn to help your students achieve expert level skills with the TI-84 family of graphing calculators. Since these calculators are allowed (even encouraged) on the national college readiness exams, making sure students have complete mastery of their tools will help reduce stress and increase confidence on this important day. Presenter: Lonny Cruff Lonny is the High School "mathematics department" at a village school in rural, southwest Alaska. As the primary person who delivers math instruction and content to secondary students, he has seen a need to make sure his students are well prepared for the high stakes assessments that they will face if they determine they wish to extend their education beyond their local school. Because of this, an important part of the equation is the effective use of graphing calculators, specifically the TI-84, so the calculator is a useful tool instead of a hindrance in the high pressure environment of college readiness assessments.

Using Student Selfies to Better Connect and Engage

Over the last four years, hundreds of students across Alaska have been taking snapshots of themselves to see their lives more clearly. These 'selfies' are more than skin deep, though; they are full-color snapshots of a student's developmental ecology that shows each youth how different factors are influencing them. Students have been sharing these 'selfies' with their teachers, family members, and other community members to deepen their connection with caring adults around them and thicken their 'webs of support' to enhance their academic success and wellbeing. Join this session to hear from students about how these snapshots and the related Integrative Youth Development principles and practices have helped them. Protect Yourself From Frustration: A Safe Intro to LaTex

Lamport Tex or LaTex is a typesetting programming language that is a free alternative to programs like Microsoft Word. This language is famous for its ability to make scientific/mathematical writing and symbols easy to express digitally. New editors have made his legendary code much simpler to learn and use. In this session I will demonstrate how to write basic documents like articles and tests, give people the resources they need to get started, help set up those resources, and ensure your mental and emotional well being throughout the process. This language started off as a required frustration for me and quickly blossomed into a hobby and an obsession. This talk will be primarily geared towards secondary math and science teachers, but should not be limited to them since much of the published academic research we read has been written in this language. Presenter: Andrew Slagle My name is Andrew Slagle and I am your friendly neighborhood math nerd. Selfie-Absorbed: Body Image, Narcissism, and Empathy in the Smartphone Era

A decade into the smartphone era, there is a lot to celebrate. Smartphones are revolutionizing education in a number of significant ways, from information retrieval to visual creation. As is so often the case, however, the impact on teen and pre-teen culture has not been completely positive. During that same period of time, a number of significant social issues have arisen that pose challenges for both educators and parents. Under the best of circumstances, middle and high school students are self-absorbed. Now that nearly 100% carry a virtual mirror with them that can broadcast their image to the world, researchers are documenting measurable increases in body image disorders and narcissism. At the same time, research is revealing a corresponding drop in empathy among millennials and Generation Z'ers. This presentation will discuss the most recent sociological research, review the tech trends that are contributing to these problems, and suggest a range of possible countermeasures. Unlock Elementary Creativity with Scratch

Scratch, a simple coding language developed by MIT, is an amazing tool with TONS of applications for upper elementary and middle school students. From basic graphic design to animation to game creation to storytelling, students can learn the basics of coding while working on teacher-led projects. Once the basics have been covered, this session will focus on using Scratch as a tool for interactive game creation and as a motivator for writing projects: they can bring their stories to life with characters, movement, speech bubbles (or custom-recorded sounds), and scene changes. They will be eager to write when they know they'll be animating it later! Presenter: Jonathan Crocker Jon Crocker was sent back from the future to prevent a select group of students from growing up without the technology skills they'll need to be truly successful. He has taught in Alaska for seven years, helping his schools do things like make AYP for the first time ever, or win awards like Title I Distinguished School and Alaska Reward School. He also teaches social studies, English, consults part-time, and spends occasional afternoons in search of Sarah Connor. Former ASTE sessions included using geospatial tools to bring textbooks to life and using online discussion tools to increase student engagement.

Creative Technologies: Kids Sharing their Experience with Real Choice * DROP IN SESSION*

What happens when we do what we say we should do as teachers? What happens when we give kids real choice in their learning. The Creative Technologies Academy at Mat-Su Central is an experiment in giving students real choice in both what and how they want to learn. This year, nearly 50 students joined together 2 days a week to identify their interests, develop personal plans, and work individually and in teams to learn. Their instructor, Mr. Carnahan, was very clear that he is not the specialist, especially in many of their interest areas, but that he was a coach and a mentor, helping them push through areas of difficulty. Join us and see what these kids have learned. They will be sharing their products and their process for learning. This is less of a presentation, and more of a conversation. Kids are their to share and answer your questions. Choice is a messy thing, so come see a real-world example of what these students experience and where they are taking their own learning. Areas students self selected this year have been in areas of digital graphic design, animation, coding, hardware, web design, photography, videography, and more. Presenter: Jesse Carnahan Jesse holds a B.A. in Russian and History form U.A.A. as well as a M.A. in Teaching from Phoenix University. Since 2002, he has taught in elementary through high school levels, and in multiple content areas. Currently, at Mat-Su Central, an alternative school in the MSB, he is using flexible student schedules to pioneer different methods of exploring

Selfie-Absorbed: Body Image, Narcissism, and Empathy in the Smartphone Era *FULL* Sorry, but our registration records indicate that this session is currently full. We have added an additional session of the topic with this presenter on 2/19 at 12:30pm.

Now that nearly 100% carry a virtual mirror with them that can broadcast their image to the world, researchers are documenting measurable increases in body image

Empowering Students with HTML

Is the "hour of code" just not enough for your students? Do you want to give them a real foundation on which they can build an arsenal of skills for a future career? I've been teaching HTML to middle school students using Codecademy with astounding results--they take what they learn and run with it, moving on to creating their very own webpages within one quarter, giving them a forum for self-expression while also giving them the confidence that they can really create something from scratch. Once these skills are established, they can move on to other skills (like Java), learning how to incorporate them into their own pages. If middle school students can do it, so can high school

STEM Education Meets the Maker Movement and Distance Ed!

Visit this hands-on STEM session to delve into hands-on and minds-on “making”, and the chance to design and innovate. A dynamic duo of presenters will offer this experience, and will also feature a live connection with a classroom off-site. This session will emphasize the encouragement of young people to create, build, and invent – to be makers of things, not just consumers of things. A resource list for supply sources will be shared. The Maker’s Movement is a broad community who learn through design, innovation, iterative trials, and making things. As a maker, you can either do it yourself (DIY) or do it with others (DIWO). While this is not a new concept, it is a resurgence of the kind of tinkering our grandparents did, often out of necessity while growing up in rural America. The new aspects of this creative inventing and design thinking include the new accessible, electronic supplies that are available to use along with recycled materials. No only do Maker Activities engage and excite students, but this project-based learning can spark interest in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts, as well as develop their

Capture Your Best Professional Selfie

Shouldn't your performance evaluation reflect the best and most accurate professional you? Hear how the Alaska Gateway School District has fine-tuned and upped its game in its evaluation instruments. Partnering with nonprofit Brightways Learning, you will see how performance data is collected much more quickly and more frequently - including the teacher adding their own performance input - to capture the clearest, most complete picture of each teacher for evaluation. This collaborative and transparent process also sparks more meaningful dialogue and improvement opportunities throughout the school year before evaluation deadlines. Let's discuss together how the evaluation process in any district can be transformed from something done "to" teachers toward a more valuable professional development process "with" teachers. While many districts are struggling with cumbersome frameworks and tools, during this session you will hear why and how AGSD and others are adopting a system that is more efficient - and more effective - for both administrators and teachers. Presenter: Scott MacManus Scott is the Superintendent of Alaska Gateway School District, where his interests have led him to specialize in funding and managing an array of projects and programs that improve the quality of education and life for communities in rural Alaska.
