6 Coating Properties -6.1 Coating Thickness -
Coating Thickness—The average thickness ofcoating for all specimens tested shall conform tothe requirements of Table 1 for the categories andthicknesses of the material being galvanized.Minimum average thickness of coating for anyindividual specimen is one coating grade lessthan that required in Table 1. Where productsconsisting of various material thicknesses orcategories are galvanized, the coating thicknessgrades for each thickness range and materialcategory of material shall be as shown in Table 1.In the case of orders in SI units, the values inTable 1, shall be applicable as metric units inmicrometres. In the case of orders in inch-poundunits,the measured value shall be converted tocoating grade units by the use of Table 2. Thespecification of coating thicknesses heavier thanthose required by Table 1 shall be subject tomutual agreement between the galvanizer and thepurchaser.(Fig. 2 is a graphic representation ofthe sampling and specimen delineation steps, andFig. 3 is a graphic representation of the coatingthickness inspection steps.)
6.1.1 For articles whose surface area is greater than 160in.2[100 000 mm2] (multi-specimen articles),each test article in the sample must meet theappropriate minimum average coating thicknessgrade requirements of Table 1, and eachspecimen coating thickness grade comprising thatoverall average for each test article shall averagenot less than one coating grade below thatrequired in Table 1.
-
6.1.2 For articles whose surface area is equal to or lessthan 160 in.2 [100 000 mm2] (single-specimenarticles), the average of all test articles in thesample must meet the appropriate minimumaverage coating thickness grade requirements ofTable 1, and for each test article, its specimencoating thickness shall be not less than one

coating grade below that required in Table 1.6.1.3 No individual measurement, or cluster of
measurements at the same general location, on atest specimen shall be cause for rejection underthe coating thickness requirements of thisspecification provided that when thosemeasurements are averaged with the otherdispersed measurements to determine thespecimen coating thickness grade for thatspecimen, the requirements of 6.1.1 or 6.1.2, asappropriate are met.
-
6.2 Finish P
The coating shall be continuous (except asprovided below), and as reasonably smooth anduniform in thickness as the weight, size, shape ofthe item, and necessary handling of the itemduring the dipping and draining operations at thegalvanizing kettle will permit. Except for localexcess coating thickness which would interferewith the use of the product, or make it dangerousto handle (edge tears or spikes),rejection fornonuniform coating shall be made only forplainly visible excess coating not related todesign factors such as holes, joints, or specialdrainage problems (see Note 6).
6.2.1 Each area subject to renovation shall be 1 in. [25mm]or less in its narrowest dimension.
P
6.2.2 The total area subject to renovation on eacharticle shall be no more than 1⁄2 of 1 % of theaccessible surface area to be coated on thatarticle, or 36 in.2 per short ton [256 cm2 permetric ton] of piece weight, whichever is less.
P
6.2.3 The thickness of renovation shall be that requiredby the thickness grade for the appropriatematerial category and thickness range in Table 1in accordance with the requirements of 6.1,except that for renovation using zinc paints, thethickness of renovation shall be 50 % higher thanthat required by Table 1, but not greater than 4.0mils.
P
6.2.4 When areas requiring renovation exceed thecriteria previously provided, or are inaccessiblefor repair, the coating shall be rejected.

6.3 Threaded Components in Assemblies P
The zinc coating on external threads shall not besubjected to a cutting, rolling,or finishing tooloperation, unless specifically authorized by thepurchaser. Internal threads are not prohibitedfrom being tapped or retapped after galvanizing.Coatings shall conform to the requirements ofSpecification A153/A153M.
6.4 Appearance P
Upon shipment from the galvanizing facility, galvanized articles shall be free from uncoatedareas, blisters, flux deposits, and gross drossinclusions. Lumps, projections, globules, or heavydeposits of zinc which will interfere with theintended use of the material will not be permitted.Plain holes of 1⁄2-in. [12.5-mm] diameter or moreshall be clean and reasonably free from excesszinc. Marks in the zinc coating caused by tongs orother items used in handling the article during thegalvanizing operation shall not be cause forrejection unless such marks have exposed thebase metal and the bare metal areas exceedallowable maximums from 6.2.1 and 6.2.2. Thepieces shall be handled so that after galvanizingthey will not freeze together on cooling.
6.5 Adherence P
The zinc coating shall withstand handlingconsistent with the nature and thickness of thecoating and the normal use of the article, withoutpeeling or flaking.
