Having learnt about the zodiac signs, it is worthwhile having some information regarding planets also. It

should be very clear that if we memorize these basic things, it will help a lot in making excellent predictions.

The base of predictive astrology is zodiac signs, planets and the houses. After having the complete

knowledge of these, the readers will be in a position to assess that at which time any planet can give what

sort of result. Like any one person behaves in a different manner at different places or with different people;

in the same manner planets in different houses and in different zodiac signs gives totally different results.

For example the result of presence of Sun in Leo will be quite different from its presence in Libra. The Moon

in conjunction with Sun will give different result than its conjunction with Jupiter. The method or source of

giving financial gain of Jupiter will be completely different than that of the Mars. Similarly the planets give

gains or losses in the direction of his lordship and with the things of which he is "Karka" or of his lordship. So

in my opinion it is a must to understand and memorize these characteristics.

It has been said earlier also that in Hindu Astrology we mainly consider the effect of only nine planets -- the

Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. In our ancient astrological system we

have considered the effect of the presence of Gulik or Mandhi (son of Saturn). For some specific purposes

Gulik's position is still used in the present time also.

Followings are the Natural Characteristics of the Planets:

GENDER (sex)

The Sun, the Mars and the Jupiter are male planets while the Moon, theVenus and Rahu are female planets.

Mercury, Saturn and Ketu are considered to be impotent planets.

With this information we should think that the Sun is father, Mars is brother and Jupiter is son.

Moon and Venus are females with this it should be clear that Moon is mother and Venus is wife. Further

detailed difference will be given at relevant place.

This information helps us in assessing the nature, looks, temparament etc. of a person while examining the

horoscope. It also helps in assessing the gender of a baby prior to its birth by examining the horoscope of

the pregnant lady and her husband. It also helps in predicting about father, mother, brother etc.

CASTE

The Jupiter and the Venus are Brahmin. The Sun and the Mars are Kshatriyas (warriors ). The Moon vaisya

(trader) and the Mercury is of mixed caste. Some are of the opinion that moon is kshatriya and mercury is

vaisya. The Saturn is the leader of shudra community (untouchables) and Rahu & Ketu are Chandaals (low

castes). The Sun, Jupiter and the Moon are planets signifying Satva (purity, goodness). The Venus and the

Mercury are essentially the planets of Passion. The Saturn and the Mars own Tamas or darkness as their

distinguish characteristic.

When we will start studying a horoscope we will see that this information will help assessing the type of a

solution one should adopt. For example if some one brings a horoscope to you and says that he has a

dispute with somebody and how he should resolve this issue i.e., to resolve by discussions ( Jupiter or

Venus - as they are Brahmins ) or by going to courts i.e., by punishing (Sun or Mars - as they are

Kshatriyas),or by donating some money (Moon being Vaisya and remedial is donation ).This will be directly

linked with the period (mahadasa and antar dasa i.e., main period and sub period of the planet ) through

which the concerned person is passing through.

DIRECTIONS

Regarding the lordship of different directions, the Sun is considered to be the lord of East, Moon is the lord

of North-West (Vavya kon[degree]), Mars is the lord of South , Mercury is the lord of North, Jupiter is the lord

of North-East (Eeshan Kon), Venus is the lord of South-East (Aagney kaun), Saturn is the lord of West and

Rahu & Ketu are lord of South-West (Naratya Kaun).

This information is used while calculating that in which direction, the person in question, might have gone

(for example while solving the question of a theft, the astrologer can predict the direction in which the thief

must have gone or while calculating about a missing person, the direction in which the missing person has

left can be predicted). The strong planet gives benefit if we work in his direction. It also helps to know which

Deity to worship before undertaking a journey in a particular direction.

COLORS

Sun is of red and little mixed color, Moon is white, Mars is bright red in color, Mercury is green ,Jupiter is

golden, Venus is white, Saturn is black and deep blue also( as considered by some learned astrologers ),

Rahu has honey like color and Ketu is of brown color.

NATURE

The Sun and the Moon are Luminous. The Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and The Saturn are star planets. Rahu and Ketu are of the nature of darkness. The Moon (waxing only), Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are auspicious or benefic planets (out of these Jupiter and Venus are exceedingly auspicious). The waning Moon, the Saturn, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu are malign or malefic planets. The Mercury in conjunction with a malign planet also becomes a malign or malefic planet. Among the malefic planets the Saturn and the Mars are exceedingly malefic. In the first ten days of the Lunar month (starting with the bright half i.e., shukal pakhsh or Full Moon), the Moon is of moderate strength. During the second period of ten days (starting from tenth of shukal pakhsh to fifth of krishan pakhsh i.e., the dark half), the Moon is Very strong and is very auspicious. During the third period of ten days (starting from fifth of krishan pakhsh to Amavasya i.e., No Moon) he has no strength, but will prove auspicious if aspected(glanced) by benefic planets.

At the stage of reading a horoscope this information will form the bases for calculating that the beneficial period or period of loss, which part of the body will be weak or strong, etc.

SOME OTHER CHARECTERISTICS

The Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are considered the lords of bones, blood, bone

marrow, skin, fat, semen and nerves respectively in a human body. In western astrology Mars is considered

as the representative of blood and Mercury of nervous system.

The Sun and Mars are metal representative. The Moon and Saturn are of plants. The Jupiter and Venus

represents living beings. The Mercury is mixed i.e., metal, plant and living beings also.

If some planet is in a benefic position, then the benefit will be in the form or through whom can be decided using this information.

The Universe is composed of five basic tatvas (elements). These are Earth (Prithvi Tatva), Water (Jal Tatva), Fire (Agni Tatva), Air (Vayu Tatva) and Sky (Aakash Tatva). The Sun and Mars are of Agni Tatva, the Moon and Venus are of Jal Tatva, the Mercury is of Prithvi Tatva, the Jupiter is of Aakash Tatv and the Saturn is of Vayu Tatva .

ASTRONOMICAL TERMINOLOGY

ECLIPTIC : Ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun.

ZODIAC & ASTROLOGY

Zodiac is an imaginary belt in the heavens extending to 9º on both sides of ecliptic containing 12 signs of 30º each. The first sign starts from 0º of the sign Aries (Mesha) and extends to 30º. Each degree can be divided into 60 minutes, and each minute can be divided into 60 seconds for the purpose of precision in calculations.

From the earth, the signs appear to be moving in a clockwise motion. The earth has two revolutions: one around the Sun which is completed in 365,25 days, and the other around its own axis which is completed in 24 hours. Due to earth's movement around the Sun, when the Sun is viewed in the background of the zodiac it appears from the earth that the Sun moves/rotates at the speed of 1º per day in an anti-clockwise direction. The other revolution of the earth i.e. around its own axis causes rise of all the 12 signs in the horizon or east in a period of 24 hours.

The zodiac is also divided into 27 nakshatras (constellations) consisting of groups of fixed stars. The names and extent of nakshatras in zodiac are being separately indicated in the table appended at the end of the book.

EQUINOX:

Equinox is the time when the Sun apparently crosses the equator and the day and the night are equal. It is believed that when the Sun touches its equinoctial point of zero degree of Aries, the earth moves westward with reference to a particular constellation. The zodiac seen or measured from the beginning of Aries from the westward moving equinoctial point is known as moving or tropical zodiac. When zero degree of Aries is reckoned from a particular star, the same is known as fixed or sidereal zodiac. The Vedic system of Astrology uses the concept of fixed zodiac and that is why the Sun enters Aries almost on identical dates every year. In the Vedic system of Astrology, when we are speaking of various signs we are actually speaking about the fixed constellations with the same name. The Vedic system of Astrology is known as Nirayana System.

AYANAMSA :

The ayanamsa is the distance between the fixed and the moving zodiacs.

SOLAR  TIME :

We measure time based on the concept of the solar day. It is defined as an average time period of the successive passages of the Sun over a given meridian. It is exactly 24 hours and is known as the mean solar day.

SIDEREAL  TIME :

The time required for a 360 degree rotation of the earth around its axis, causing a given star in the sky to return to the same position in relation to the earth is known as the sidereal day and this period is about 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds.

PLANETARY LONGITUDES

Planetary longitude is the angular distance measured eastward on the ecliptic from the starting point of the fixed zodiac and it gives the apparent position of the planet

in a particular sign at a given time.

LONGITUDES

Longitude is the angular distance of any place on the earth's surface, east or west of a standard meridian (e.g. that of Greenwich), measured in degrees up to 180º east or west, or in units of time (1 hour = 15º). With the help of the longitude of a particular place with reference to Greenwich (0º), we calculate the local mean time for that place. As the earth rotates from west to east (anti-clockwise), those places east of Greenwich will be ahead of Greenwich Time and those to the west will be behind Greenwich Time. For each degree of longitude, there is a difference of four minutes in time.

LATITUDE

Latitude is the angular distance on its meridian of any place of the earth's surface from the equator. It is measured in degrees and minutes from the equator towards either the North Pole or the South Pole. The equator represents 0 degree latitude. Latitudes are thus lines drawn parallel to the equator.

Note:Even if you find it difficult to understand astronomical terms, you can proceed with further study. The lack of clear understanding of the astronomical terminology will not create hurdles in your understanding of the Predictive Astrology. Predictive Astrology and Astronomy are two different sciences. Predictive Astrology is based on Astronomy but the deep knowledge of Astronomy is not at all necessary for predictive analysis.

GENERAL TERMINOLOGY

NATAL CHART/BIRTH HOROSCOPE

Natal chart or radical chart or horoscope or natal positions are the positions of the ascendant and planets in various signs as noted for the time of the birth. Natal positions, therefore, are fixed. The planetary positions noted with reference to a particular chart for subsequent periods are known as transits or transit positions. .

PLANETARY CONJUNCTION

Conjunction is the apparent coincidence or proximity of two or more celestial objects as viewed from the earth. The conjunction can be exact or close. If the difference in longitudes happens to be less than one degree, the resulting conjunction is known as an exact conjunction. If the difference in longitudes is within five degrees, the same is known as a close conjunction.

PLANETARY ASPECT

The aspects are partial and full. In the Vedic system of Astrology, we are concerned with only full aspects. Each planet is believed to aspect fully the seventh house, reckoned from the placement of the former.

In addition to this i.e. the seventh aspect, planets posited outside the orbit of the earth as well as Rahu and Ketu have additional special full aspects as under:

a)  Saturn aspects third and tenth houses from its location.b)  Mars aspects fourth and eight houses from its location.c)  Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu aspect fifth and ninth houses from their location.

Planets influence other houses/planets aspected by them favorably or unfavorably, depending upon their functional nature in the horoscope. The principle of exact or close aspect is identical to exact or close conjunction i.e. when a planet casts its aspect on another planet(s) or on the most effective point of house(s) within an orb of one degree, the aspect is known as an exact aspect. If the difference in planetary longitudes is within five degrees, then the aspect is known as a close aspect.

The conjunctions or aspects with more than five degrees of longitudinal difference are wide conjunctions or aspects. These do not have permanent impact in life except the short lived transit influences on the planets involved in wide conjunctions or aspects. The wide aspects give their results in later part of life, say around 60 years or after.

The aspect of the planet will be effective corresponding to the strength of the planet. If the aspecting planet is weak due to any reason including debilitation its effectiveness will be weak and limited.

The close aspect of a functional malefic will act as a damaging force and the close aspect of a functional benefic will act as a helping force.

GENERAL AND PARTICULAR SIGNIFICATIONS OF PLANETS

The general significations of a planet mean the aspects ruled by that planet. For example, the Sun rules father, status of the native, heart, digestive system, etc., irrespective of the lordship of the Sun in a particular nativity. The particular significations of a planet mean the significations of its mooltrikona house, the significations of its natal house and the significations of its transiting house i.e. the house where its mooltrikona sign is placed, the house where the planet is placed in the natal chart and the house where the planet is placed in transit.

The results of the significations of a weak planet fructify with delay and suffer whenever that weak planet is afflicted due to close aspect or conjunction with any functional malefic planet. The natal affliction causes damages in the entire sub-periods of the weak planet and the afflicting planets while the transit affliction cause short term damages during that effective transit influence.

PLANETARY AVASTHAS (STATES)

The planetary avasthas are the conditions in which a planet is placed.  The prominent avasthas and the results produced are as under :

a)   INFANCY:  Whenever the longitude of a planet in a particular sign is less than 5 degrees, it is said to be in the state of infancy. Such a planet is incapable of fully promoting/protecting its general and particular significations.

b)   OLD AGE:    Whenever the longitude of a planet in a particular sign is more than 25 degrees, it is said to be in the state of old age. Such a planet is incapable of fully promoting/protecting its general and particular significations.

c)   OWN SIGN:  A planet in its own sign is treated as strong and is capable of generating the expected results, provided it is otherwise strong.

According with Systems’ Approach, the dispositor is a planet in whose mooltrikona sign another planet is located in the natal chart. Suppose in a natal chart the Sun is placed in the sign Libra ruled by Venus. In this case Venus will be the dispositor of the Sun. No planet which is in a non- mooltrikona sign will have a dispositor i.e. the planet(s) in Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces have no dispositor. If a planet is posited in Aries, its dispositor would be Mars; if a planet is posited in Cancer, its dispositor would be the Moon; if a planet is posited in Leo, its dispositor would be the Sun; if a planet is posited in Virgo, its dispositor would be Mercury; if a planet is posited in Libra, its dispositor would be Venus; if a planet is posited in Sagittarius, its dispositor would be Jupiter; and if a planet is posited in Aquarius, its dispositor would be Saturn

g)   COMBUSTION:  Whenever a planet comes very near to the Sun, it is divested of its brightness (luster). The said state is called combustion. While in the state of combustion, the planets fail to fully protect/promote their general and particular significations. If such a planet is weak on other accounts too, the significations ruled by them do not even take birth.

PLANETARY COMBUSTION

1. If the Sun is a functional benefic planet, is the combust planet always considered weak?

Let us first understand the combustion as a concept. Whenever a planet comes very near to the Sun, it is divested of its brightness (luster). The said state is called combustion. While in the state of combustion, the planets lack power to protect and promote the significations/houses ruled by them. If such a planet is weak on other accounts too, the significations ruled by them do not even take birth. The planets are said to be combust when they are within the below mentioned degrees on either side of the Sun.

When both the Sun and the combust planet are functional benefic planets and are closely conjunct, we have to see their two roles distinctively. Firstly, as the lords of the two auspicious houses they rule. The significations of both of these houses will flourish and will be connected to each other except the short run transit malefic influences which will stress the combust planet comparatively more than the Sun. Secondly, the role of a combust planet. The combust planet is considered as a weak planet but in case the Sun and planet(s) involved are functional benefic planets, the weakness of the combust planet(s) is operative only at the time of natal or transit afflictions.

2. Can we call the combust planet "Weak"?

Yes. The weakness due to combustion gives high and low tides in life and need astral strength for the planets to enable them to fight natal and / or transit afflictions.

3. We understand that when combust, a planet will transfer its significations to the Sun. Right? Does that mean that if, say, the lord of the sixth gets combust, the Sun will take on its qualities of dispute, conflict, and injury, even if their orb of conjunction is more than 6 degrees?

If a functional malefic planet closely influences any other planet or the Sun, a

functional malefic planet will certainly color the significations of the planet under its influence, negatively.

4. Is there ever a time when the transit influence continues for a longer duration?

Generally, the maximum limit of transit influences is around four months when Rahu/Ketu axis is stationary.

5. As for the Sun, to what extent the influence of the combust planet helps as the combust planet will be weak and not in a position to help the Sun?

When both the Sun and the combust planet are functional benefic planets and are closely conjunct, one should see their role as the lords of the two houses they rule. The significations of both of these houses will flourish and will be connected to each other except the short run transit malefic influences which will stress the combust planet comparatively more than the Sun.

6. In a situation, where the dispositor of the Sun is combust, the Sun indirectly hurting itself by causing combustion to its own dispositor, would there be more weakness to both dispositor of the Sun and Sun itself, if Sun was a functional malefic planet for the ascendant in question?

That is right.

h) IN FRIENDLY SIGNS:  When planets occupy the signs of their friendly planets, they are happy and feel free to produce results,  if they are otherwise strong.  The Sun, the Moon and Mars are friends and Jupiter is their preceptor.  Saturn, Mercury, Rahu and Ketu are friends and Venus is their preceptor.

I)   IN INIMICAL SIGNS:  When planets occupy signs of their enemies, they do

not find themselves comfortable to produce results expected of them. However, any sign from where a particular planet aspects its own mooltrikona sign is an exception to this rule and a planet in such a state does not find itself restricted to produce results.

j)   AFFLICTED PLANETS:  The afflictions to the planets or houses are caused by the close conjunction or aspect of the functional malefic planets in a nativity. Whenever a planet/house is already weak for any other reason and is under the close influence of any functional malefic, it is treated as an afflicted planet/house. But when the planet/house is not weak for other reasons, it can be considered afflicted either under the exact influence of a functional malefic for normal afflictions or under the orb of influence of two degrees for special/multiple afflictions, becoming a weak planet/house for that reason. So whenever any planet/house is afflicted, it becomes weak not being capable of fully protecting/promoting its general and particular significations. The significations of the houses having mooltrikona sign of an afflicted planet are harmed more when such planets are already weak for other reasons.

k) WEAK PLANETS:  A weak planet is not capable of fully protecting/promoting its general and particular significations during the course of its sub-periods and the transit malefic influences. Any planet is considered weak if: a) it is combust due to its nearness to the Sun.b) it occupies malefic houses from the ascendant, ( Except when in its own mooltrikona sign.) c) it occupies its sign of debilitation.(The planets are considered weak for all purposes if they occupy debilitated navamsa and are considered weak for specific purposes if they occupy the corresponding debilitated amsa. For example, if any planet is strong in rasi and navamsa, but debilitated in dasamsa, it makes it weak only for the purposes of the 10th house. But being debilitated in navamsa makes it weak regarding all its general and particular significations.)d) it is in the state of infancy or old age.

e) it occupies debilitated sign in navamsa. f) it occupies the mooltrikona sign of a weak planet.g) it is the Moon within 72 degrees either side of the Sun.h) it is conjunct or aspected by any functional malefic planet within an orb of one degree.i) the most effective point of its house of placement is afflicted by a functional malefic planet within an orb of one degree. ( It only applies to nativities where the time of birth is correct.)j) the most effective point of its mooltrikona house is afflicted by a functional malefic planet within an orb of one degree. ( In this case, the planet should be considered weak for the purposes of its particular significations only. It only applies also if the time of birth is correct.)NOTE: in the last three points, when the affliction is special or multiple, i.e. when it comes from:

1) a conjunction with/ aspect from the most malefic planet,2) an aspect of a functional malefic planet placed in a malefic house,3) a conjunction with Rahu or Ketu (Rahu-Ketu axis),4) an aspect of a functional malefic planet afflicted by other(s) functional malefic,5) more than one functional malefic planet at the same time,any otherwise "strong" planet should be considered afflicted (and weak) even when the orb of affliction is of two degrees.

l) STRONG PLANETS:  A strong planet protects and promotes its general and particular significations. Any planet is considered strong when it is not in the state of weakness. It can increase its strength if:

a) its longitude is between 10º to 20º in a particular sign;b) it occupies own or good navamsa and other divisions;c) it is under the close influence of the strong functional benefic planets;

d) it occupies its exaltation, mooltrikona or own sign;e) it closely influences the most effective point of the house.

DISPOSITOR

According with Systems' Approach, the dispositor is a planet in whose mooltrikona sign another planet is located in the natal chart. Suppose in a natal chart the Sun is placed in the sign Libra ruled by Venus. In this case Venus will be the dispositor of the Sun. No planet which is in a non- mooltrikona sign will have a dispositor i.e. the planet(s) in Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces have no dispositor. DIVISIONAL CHARTS

The divisional charts (DCs) are the charts which are drawn by division of houses for specialized analysis of a particular signification; for example navamsa for considering general fortune and marriage, etc., and dasamsa for considering professional aspects in a nativity. The methodology of study of the divisional charts has been brought out in the revised edition of author's book "HOW TO STUDY DIVISIONAL CHARTS" which readers may study after they have learnt the system in general.

YOGAKARAKA PLANETS

Yogakaraka planets are those planets which own a kendra (angle) and  a trikona (trine) in a particular nativity.  These yogakarakas are first rate functional benefics and, when strong, produce excellent results by their close association/aspects with

any particular planet/house.

The following planets become yogakarakas for the ascendant (lagnas) mentioned against each :-

We analyze matters pertaining to accumulation of wealth, family life, status, speech, teeth, face, eyesight, and birth of a male child from the second

house. The royal planets ruling the second house in strength with strong dhanakarakas, the Moon and Jupiter, indicate affluent financial wealth to the native, impressive speech, healthy teeth and well established family

background. The indications change depending upon (i) the location of the lord of the second house; and (ii) the second house being closely

influenced by the lords of other houses. In case the lord of the tenth house occupies the second house in strength, there can be increase in

accumulated wealth through earnings by profession, and the status of the person may be elevated during the sub-period of a strong lord of the tenth

house. A debilitated planet in the second house or the weak lord of the second house in its sub-periods may make the native vulnerable to

relationship and status/job problems. One may suffer from the dental and throat diseases and there may be separation from the family. For speech another factor to be considered is the planet Mercury, the significator for speech. The planet(s) closely influencing the most effective point of the second house color the results of second house with the significations

ruled by such planet(s). The status and wealth is linked with the significations of the house where the lord of the second house is placed.

Like the second lord going to the tenth house may exhibit role of wealth in the professional matters of the native; the former's placement in the

eleventh house indicates income from wealth in the form of interests and dividends; the second lord's placement in the fourth house may indicate

investment in properties and vehicles, while the second lord's placement in the sixth house indicates involvement in litigation with respect to family

assets and marital relations and placement of the second lord in the twelfth house may indicate loss on accumulations and assets during the ruling

sub-periods of the lord of the second house.

The close influence of strong functional benefic planets to the most effective point of the second house confers wealth and status to the

person. The weak and afflicted planets may involve the person in scandals and may cause defamation. The second lord being weak and afflictions to

the second house cause harm to physical attributes of a person e.g. vision, speech, facial beauty and cause marital discord. This house may inculcate bad habits, as well. The functional malefic planets ruling royal tendencies and functional malefic planets like Mars and Rahu, etc. give the habits of

taking such food, wines and other intoxicated drinks which spoil the physical health of the person. The functional malefic planets Mars and

Rahu may give tendency of consumption of fried food, excessive intoxication and smoking etc. The functional malefic planets Sun, Venus

and Moon may give tendency of consumption of sumptuous meals regularly, excessive use of which gives rise to diseases promoted by

excessive cough, bile and acidity. If the house is strong, devoid of association of functional malefic planets and is under the benevolent

influence of a strong functional benefic Jupiter the person enjoys a long disease-free life.

The second house is ruled by Mercury, who occupies it in exact conjunction with the ascendant lord, the Sun. The combustion of Mercury

has reduced its strength and the chances of earning and accumulating fabulous wealth. The placement of the Sun in the second house gave good

status to the native who served as principal of a post-graduate degree college and later was elevated to the rank of a regional director of the

university. During the course of his life, the native earned lot of wealth, was blessed with sons, and enjoyed comforts of enormous residence, car, etc. The presence of the fifth lord in the ascendant, that too Jupiter linked his

The second house contains affluent sign Libra with Rahu in it on the most effective point and closely aspected by the sixth lord, Saturn, in

debilitation. The second lord is occupying the eleventh house along with the weak ascendant lord. Both Venus and Mercury are combust and weak. During the favorable main period of Jupiter and sub-periods of well placed

Mercury, Venus and the Moon the native earned and accumulated lot of wealth including fabulous wealth of spouse. Rahu, Ketu and Saturn closely

afflict the houses occupied and aspect. With the onset of the sixth lord's main period which occupies the eighth house in its sign of debilitation in

exact conjunction with Ketu, it posed obstructions and reduction in accumulations. Venus denotes income generated from the accumulated wealth as it occupies the eleventh house being lord of the second house

house. As per lordship, placement and close conjunction of Jupiter, Mars draws some strength. Both Jupiter and Mars influence the most effective points of the houses occupied and aspected. In addition to Mars, Venus,

Mercury and Jupiter are also weak due to combustion. The native has very delicate health due to the weakness of all planets. The close conjunction of the tenth lord and the lord of the second house in the fifth house indicates

mental avocation through which native has secured reasonable comforts in life. The close influence of the lord of the twelfth house on the Moon, Mars

The well placed functional benefic planets blessed the native with the family wealth with which the native started an industry. Saturn, the lord of

There is no mooltrikona sign in the second house. The strong Jupiter is placed in the tenth house. Jupiter rules the eleventh house and its

connection with the tenth house shows considerable income through his profession. Mars and Saturn are closely conjunct and strong. The native

has earned a lot of wealth through his profession and invested the same in properties, which are fetching him income by way of rent. The lords of the

sixth and eighth houses are conjunct in the house of losses indicating losses/expenses/litigation and severe health problems during their periods.

The native's venture in production of textiles started in partnership, however, resulted in a loss and the native had to come back to the

management of the industry owned by others. The operational sub-period of Mars in the dasa of Saturn gave him an initiative and he drew large

financial benefits as a managing director of a reputed textile mill. Rahu, the next sub-period lord, placed in the eleventh house blessed him with

Development in the means of communications and requirement of modernization in each and every field, be it farming, dairy farming, running a departmental store or even a restaurant successfully besides the courses in medicine, engineering, scientific research, etc., do call for an advance probe in the dark zones of mental capabilities and inclinations of a

2. The tenth house, as the results of one's educational accomplishments are filtered through the tenth house, together with operating planetary periods also determine the area of vocations i.e. whether it is medicine, engineering, general administration, analytical, a routine job, etc.

3. The second house ruling the status and its relationship with the ascendant, third house, tenth house, fifth house, etc., as also the planets placed in the second house. The ninth house, as a strong ninth house has roots for rewarding the native for his efforts in life.

The weak and afflicted planets in their dasa/bhukti between the age of 16 to 24 years of life do not allow the person to (1) acquire education suitable for successful vocation; (2) get a suitable job; and (3) timely settlement in life. Similarly, exalted and strong planets give an impetus to the academic pursuits of a person.

The planets influencing the ascendant, the tenth house and operating between the ages of 16 to 24 years become primary determinants of one's educational pursuits. The significations of planets fructify during their own main period and/or sub-periods as per their strength and the significations also are tinted with the significations of the houses where the lord of the tenth house is placed.

The studies of the native were obstructed in the middle of 1977, after Rahu's main period started. Rahu is placed in the eighth house. In this case though the fourth lord is strong but the operating planetary period had the say. The significator of education is also incapable of providing protection due to combustion and the placement in the twelfth house. The lord of the second house is in infancy and weak. In view of these planetary configurations the native could not go beyond the tenth class in spite of his birth to educated and financially well-off parents. Mercury's sub-period in the main period of Rahu finally dropped the curtain on the scene of education. The lord of the tenth house is not only debilitated but placed in the twelfth house. The main period of functional malefic and weak Mars was in operation prior to the period of Rahu.

The lord of the fifth house and the significator for intelligence, Jupiter, is combust and closely afflicted by the Moon, Rahu and Ketu. The fifth house is occupied by functional malefic and combust Moon as also by weak Mercury, the Sun and Rahu in addition to Jupiter, and is subjected to complex influences. The Sun is in exact conjunction with the most malefic planet, the Moon, and is closely conjunct with Rahu. From December, 1987, the main period of the most malefic Moon started which is exactly afflicting the lord of the ascendant in the fifth house. The native developed strange behavior, enmity with his mother and left school. There was a break in education. The remedial measures for strengthening of Jupiter and propitiation of the Moon were suggested. The native rejoined the school and continued his studies. Later the strengthening of other weak functional benefic planets was also suggested.

The significator of education, Mercury, is badly placed and the significator of intellect, Jupiter, is weak in the natal chart. The level of education attained spoils the scope of livelihood, income and consequently causes disturbance in the married life which is otherwise delayed. The lord of the

fourth house is weak and the fourth house is also occupied by Rahu besides the severe impact of the affliction of Mars.

The significator of education is weak and is in close conjunction with the ascendant. The second lord counters the afflictions of Saturn to the tenth, second and fifth houses only to a limited extent. The Moon and Mercury are placed in each other’s house, which is good as both the houses involved are benefic houses. The presence of the lord of the tenth house in the fourth house and position of the lord of the second house in the second house indicates a profession for earning of wealth by the significations of Mars and the Sun. The placement of the Sun as lord of the second in second house and the close influence of Venus and the Moon on the most effective points of the third house connect the planetary influences with indications of the fields of medical education. The native is a medical graduate. The functional malefic Jupiter does not cause any affliction in the nativity.

The native worked with the Govt. as the Sun is strong due to its being in its own sign and receiving the close aspect of a functional benefic Jupiter. The functional malefic Saturn closely influences the tenth, second and fifth houses as also Mercury. The influences of Mars, Jupiter and Venus took the native to the medical education on the teaching side. As already indicated, the influence of the functional malefic planets on a house disturbs the significations of the natal planets/houses afflicted but their close influence creates results connected with the significations ruled by them.

Both Mercury and Jupiter are weak. The lord of the ninth house, strong Mars, occupies the ninth house in close conjunction to the most effective point and closely aspects the fourth house. The Sun is close to the most effective point of the fifth house. The functional benefic planet Saturn is well placed in the fifth house. Saturn is combust and weak. Ketu closely afflicts the most effective point of both the second and fourth houses which does not indicate brilliant educational achievements. At the age of 16 years, the planetary period of Jupiter was in progress. The planets becoming significators of education are Jupiter, Mercury and Mars. During the sub-periods of Saturn and Mercury in the main period of Saturn, the native went in for graduation in commerce. The results were average. As the lord of the ascendant is the Sun which is well placed the native during the sub-period of the Sun in the main period of Saturn got a job of finance executive in the public sector.

The learned readers are aware that for examining the net assets in life i.e. happiness, acquiring properties, vehicles and other valuables and providing comforts to a native, we consider the fourth house and the significators, Mars and Venus. Sometimes, the indications emerging out of these significators do not come true or match with actual circumstances. For a deeper analysis we take up the analysis of the chaturthamsa, the divisional chart meant for knowing the net assets.

The lord of the fourth house of the rasi chart and the significators Mars and Venus act as prime determinants of net assets in life. If there is no mooltrikona sign in the fourth house, then the lord of the second house becomes the prime determinant of net assets in life. And if there is no mooltrikona sign in both the fourth and second houses, then the lord of the eleventh house acts as prime determinant for net assets. The planets influencing the most effective point of the fourth house become the secondary determinants of the net assets in life. If there is a mooltrikona sign in the ascendant of chaturthamsa then its lord acts as an additional prime determinant for the net assets. While analysing chaturthamsa (D-4), we consider the ascendant lord of D-4 and position of the prime determinants of net assets in the rasi chart and the significators of the net assets in D-4. We consider the strength of the prime determinants for identifying the status of net assets. The royal planets, i.e. the Sun and the Moon; and the significator Venus, influencing the prime determinants, when strong indicate possessions of a royal nature i.e. spacious and palatial buildings to reside and luxurious vehicles, etc. The Saturn and Mercury, similarly, denote humble possessions whereas Rahu and Mars make one strive hard for acquiring luxurious possessions. Jupiter in such a situation denotes good possessions when in dignity and pitiable possession when weak. If the prime determinants are strong and additional prime determinant is placed in a benefic house, a person enjoys the possessions on a long-term basis depending upon the operating period of planets. If the prime and additional prime determinants are not strong, planets cannot sustain lifelong possessions. The effects of planets are closely related to their strength. By way of examples we would analyze the situation in a few cases.

The lord of the fourth house, Mercury, is well placed but weak. Jupiter, the lord of the ascendant of chaturthamsa, is weakly disposed in rasi and afflicted in D-4. The Sun, though weak, yet is well placed and exactly influences the most effective point of the fourth house. The significator Venus is weak as it is debilitated and exactly afflicted by the Ketu-Rahu axis. Saturn, ruling the house of fortune, placed in the fourth house is weak due to infancy and combustion and is closely afflicted by Rahu-Ketu axis.

During the main period of Jupiter and the sub-period of the Sun, the native was employed at a handsome salary with good perks. The job continued till the beginning of the sub-period of Rahu with some stresses and strains. In Jupiter-Rahu he left the job and started consultancy business which failed. The sub-period of combust and afflicted Saturn in its own main period could not even provide him a satisfactory job. In Saturn-Saturn, the native even tried to commit suicide owing to persistent failures. Coming back to our subject: in spite of good income in the sub-period of the Sun in the main period of Jupiter, the native could not acquire any landed property or a vehicle suitable to his status. The lord of the house of accumulation of wealth and status, though exalted, is in the old age and placed badly in the house of losses and expenses.

Both the fourth lord in rasi chart and the ascendant lord of the chaturthamsa is Sun, which is weak as it is occupying the sixth house in the rasi chart in its sign of debilitation and extreme old age. The Sun occupies the twelfth house in D-4. The significators, Mars and Venus, are in the seventh house in rasi chart and in the tenth house in D-4. As both Mars and Venus are functional malefic planets, they closely afflict each other and harm the significations of these two planets mutually. The native had a plan of acquiring a comfortable residence and a luxury car which he could not complete by 1988, i.e. till the age of 58 years. The prime determinant in debilitation, old age and bad placement deprived the native from the advantages of significations ruled it. The weak prime determinants if not strengthened either do not bless or snatch away the significations shortly after possession. Whenever a MT sign occupies a house in rasi chart or the ascendant of the concerned divisional chart, the strength of significators is of secondary importance compared to the strength of its lord.

In rasi chart, the significator Mars is weak as it is under the exact affliction of Ketu. The significator Venus is weak as it is debilitated in navamsa. The Sun becomes the additional prime determinant being lord of the ascendant of chaturthamsa. The fourth house is occupied by two functional benefic planets which are not close to the most effective point of the house. Jupiter is strong while the Sun enjoys 84% strength. The planets in the fifth house, as per their strength, give results without many efforts. In chaturthamsa the ascendant is occupied by its lord, the Sun, which is aspected by Jupiter

and Mars. Mars occupies its exaltation sign. Saturn is in its exaltation sign. Jupiter as dispositor of the prime determinant of net assets and the significator Venus is quite strong in the nativity. The native had been acquiring properties, luxury vehicles and had quite good success in his business ventures. Even at the age of 80, he was in a commanding position including health. He was a millionaire and enjoyed comforts of mansions, luxurious vehicles, royal travels, honor from hundred of employees, large family, etc.

The lord of the fourth house in the rasi chart, Mercury, becoming prime determinant of net assets, occupies the third house in close conjunction with the lord of the fifth house and significator, Venus. The strength of these two planets depends on the strength of their dispositor, the Sun, which enjoys 80% power. The most effective point of the fourth house is closely influenced by weak functional benefic Saturn which also acts as Sun. Being the lord of the ascendant of chaturthamsa, Mercury also become the additional prime determinant of net assets. Mercury and Venus are together and well placed in D-4. The ascendant of the chaturthamsa is occupied by Jupiter and aspected by Saturn. The native acquired very good assets, easily. The significator Mars is debilitated but well placed in rasi chart and closely aspected by its dispositor, the Moon. Venus, the significator for vehicles, is well placed in the chart. Jupiter closely aspects Mars and reduces the impact of weakness of Mars.

He had a large surplus for investment which he invested in a joint family property venture and was then in doldrums, what to do. There is no mooltrikona sign in the fourth and second houses and the lord of the eleventh house, Venus, becomes the prime determinant for assets. Venus is badly placed and weak due to extreme old age. The Sun occupies the ascendant of chaturthamsa. This gave mental tendencies of royal nature to the native. The main period of the Moon, the eighth lord, placed in the ninth house took him out of the country and kept there. The Moon exactly influences/afflicts the lord of the third house. The native was enjoying good status in the foreign land as per the nature of the Moon. As the Moon occupies its sign of debilitation in the chaturthamsa, the native who had invested all his savings in joint family property was then worried for his investment. Whether the diseases would be temporary/permanent is revealed by the planets which are causing afflictions. In case of natal afflictions with longer main periods like Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Mercury and Jupiter, the sufferings persist for a long time. In case of transit afflictions and natal afflictions by fast moving planets like the Moon, the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Ketu, relief is indicated comparatively earlier.

While the ascendant and the lord of the ascendant, the sixth house and its lord, the Sun (significator for vitality), the Moon (significator for mind) and Mercury (significator for nervous system) signify the physical and mental health in general, the other planets indicate parts of the body governed by them. Venus is the significator for wife and is exalted in the navamsa. Venus is weak as the most effective point of the house of its placement is under the close aspect of

the functional malefic Mars. Venus is also suffering from the close aspects of Mars and Rahu and the conjunction of Ketu. Due to weakness of and afflictions to Venus his bride left his house within a few days of the marriage and did not respond. The native was in a fix that if the spouse is not interested, at least, there should be an end to the alliance. The houses connected with the spouse and general happiness are destroyed due to utter weakness, bad placement and exact afflictions. For those born in the ascending sign of Gemini the debilitation of the Moon is not conducive for the marital happiness as the Moon, being the lord of the second house ruling family, goes to the house of disputes. The marriage of the native was fairly late in life and that too turned out to be a case of cheating. Special significance of Jupiter in female Nativities

The role of Jupiter in the male nativities is not less important but it has got additional importance in the case of females and more especially in the case of Indian females as it is significator for husband and male child. The weakness and affliction of the lord of the twelfth house robs one of the continuity of married life. The navamsa ascendant lord, Saturn, is also debilitated in navamsa and associated with Rahu. The native was married twice but the marriage survived for a few days in both the cases. Thereafter, all efforts of the parents of the native could not bring a marriage and happiness in her life. From the 20th year of life to the 40th year she had the main period of combust functional malefic and afflicted, Venus. The weak Venus is also closely afflicted by the Rahu-Ketu axis. The seventh house is occupied by combust Mars and the debilitated Sun, the lord of the fifth house. The significator for husband, Jupiter, occupies the eighth house in close conjunction with the functional malefic Mercury, ruling the house of conflicts. In navamsa the Moon occupies its sign of debilitation.

CHART 62: Female born 10th October, 1945, 2230 Hrs. 72E40, 32N02, INDIA.

Jupiter becomes the prime determinant of marriage and Mercury becomes the prime determinant of marital happiness being lord of the fourth house. The continuity of the family is ruled by the Moon. Mercury ruling marital happiness is not only combust but is also in extreme old age. Rahu-Ketu are on the most effective point of the houses of their location and afflict the houses occupied and aspected. Jupiter, who is the lord of the seventh house, is combust and the seventh house suffers from exact affliction of Rahu-Ketu axis. In navamsa, the ascendant is occupied by Rahu.

The marriage was inordinately delayed and was full of tensions and dissonance. The native was deceived. The husband was already having a permanent keep. The marriage ended in a divorce after all efforts of the native for bringing the husband to the right path failed.

The badly placed weak Sun becomes the prime determinant of marriage in this case while weak and exactly afflicted Venus becomes the prime determinant of marital happiness. Ketu closely aspects the lords of the third and fourth houses and afflicts them. The initiatives of the native caused persistent sufferings in life due to failures in all her ventures. The placement of the Moon close to the most effective point of the ascendant made the native quite emotional. As Rahu is in degree conjunction with Venus, it hastened the first marriage in Venus sub-period of Venus main period and played the mischief. The marital alliance ended within a few days. The native was divorced and remarriage took place in April, 1986. With the help of the astrological remedial measures the second marriage survives in spite of the close afflictions and the weakness of Jupiter, the significator for husband.

All results of planetary configurations are to be borne by the native. If the native is blessed with longevity only then the results of various combinations will fructify. The question of determining longevity requires great expertise. Numbers of systems are found in the classical works in this regard but none of them is perfect. Actual death cases do not respond correctly to any of the methods. Many astrologers apply fixed combinations revolving around the weakness of the Moon and its position in malefic houses, the ascendant sandwiched in the natural malefic planets, etc. for alpayu (short life span) mentioned in the classical works and predict the death in childhood. This causes great mental agony to the parents. Many times the predictions on longevity fail. Similarly, persons who have been predicted purnayu (full life span) die in the middle age. Although, the task is very difficult, yet we have to develop some system

which should be close to accuracy. Our studies indicate that the operating main period/sub-period provides us the key to determine the life span. If the ascendant contains a mooltrikona sign, the prime determinants of longevity are the ascendant and the lord of ascendant i.e. either the ascendant lord is strong or the ascendant should be aspected by its own lord and functional benefic planets and be free from the functional malefic aspects. In case the ascendant does not contain a mooltrikona sign, the prime determinants of longevity are the ascendant and the lord of the eighth house containing a mooltrikona sign. If the ascendant and the eighth house do not contain a mooltrikona sign, the prime determinants of longevity are the ascendant and the lord of the twelfth house containing a mooltrikona sign. If the ascendant, the eighth house and the twelfth house do not contain a mooltrikona sign, the prime determinants of longevity are the ascendant and the significator of longevity, Saturn. Classics guide us that if the lord of the ascendant is weak by way of occupying an inimical sign, or is in the state of debilitation, combustion, posited in the sixth, eighth and twelfth houses, then in its main period the native meets with misfortunes. Classics further indicate if there are one or more of combinations mentioned in the preceding sentence, then during the main period of such an ascendant lord the person may have to go to jail/exile and suffer from mental and physical diseases. There may be loss of position and continued miseries leading to end of life.

The supplementary determinants of longevity are the Sun, the Moon and the significator of longevity, Saturn. In case all these factors i.e. the prime and the supplementary determinants are strong and the functional benefic planets occupy angles/trines, a native is blessed with Purnayu. In case the prime determinants and the significator for longevity are strong, a native is blessed with madhyayu (medium life span) in spite of the indifferent health due to other weak planetary combinations in the chart. In case the prime and supplementary determinants are weak a person can only be expected to have alpayu. Extremely weak position of the Moon, weakness of prime determinants and operation of main period of an extremely weak and afflicted prime determinant at birth results in balarishta i.e. danger to life in infancy (up to 8 years).

The weak and afflicted planets placed in the eighth or twelfth houses also take over the role of a death inflicting planet in case the prime determinants of longevity are weak.

The functional malefic planets afflicting the weak ascendant or eighth or twelfth house become death inflicting planets. The lords of the eighth and twelfth house, if weak, can also cause death in their periods or sub-periods. The transit of slow moving or stationary functional malefic planets during death inflicting planetary periods or sub-periods in exact conjunction with the ascendant, ascendant lord or the eighth house may

result in the end of life. The periods or sub-periods of the lords of malefic houses (dusthana) cause death when such a lord forms close relationship with a weak determinant of longevity.

The combust and/or debilitated planets ruling the eighth or twelfth houses and the weak planets placed in the eighth or twelfth houses cause death in their own sub-periods if the ascendant is weak.

A close aspect of a functional benefic planet to a weak planet/house reduces the weakness to some extent. The weak planets, other than the prime and supplementary determinants for longevity, cause ill-health in commensuration to their weakness/affliction. After carefully examining the longevity determinants and assessing the life span, (a native is likely to enjoy) we may arrive at the planetary periods/sub-period with the help of transit chart which may result in the most unwanted but true fact of life i.e death. However, an overriding caution is that the assessed life span should be only kept in view by the astrologer for his own consideration. The longevity in the case of extreme illness can be known through horary chart.

The following planetary periods can cause death:-

(i) The sub-periods of the afflicting functional malefic planets in the main period of determinants of longevity.

(ii) The sub-periods of weak and afflicted determinants of longevity in the main periods of the functional malefic planets.

(iii) The sub-periods or periods of weak and afflicted planets placed in the eighth and twelfth houses.

Though the ascendant lord being prime determinant of longevity is weak due to combustion and being in infancy, it retains some power as it is unafflicted and is in the state of exaltation. The functional malefic Saturn is closely aspecting the most effective point of the ascendant. The Sun, the significator of vitality, is the lord of the twelfth house and occupies the twelfth house. The Moon is weak as it occupies its sign of debilitation. The strong Jupiter occupies the angular house. Rahu closely afflicts weak Venus. There are both positive and negative factors. The significator for vitality in its own sign and strong Jupiter in the angular house provide strength to the otherwise weak prime determinants. The lord of the eighth house is well placed without any close affliction to it or by it to any other natal position. The significator of longevity is well placed. The life span can

be assessed as medium. During the main period of Venus and sub-period of debilitated Rahu, which is closely afflicting Venus, the native breathed his last at the age of 51 years. In ashthamsa (D-8) the main period lord is debilitated and badly placed, and the sub-period lord aspects the ascendant.

The Sun, being dispositor of weak Venus and the closely conjunct functional malefics Mercury and Ketu, occupies the twelfth house in infancy. Saturn, the significator of longevity, is weak due to combustion and placement in the twelfth house. Except that the ascendant lord is not combust and also does not occupy a dusthana the chart is devoid of other strengths. After prolonged illness, the native breathed his last at the age of 35 years during the sub-period of Jupiter in the main period of the Moon. The ascendant lord of the rasi chart is in the eighth house of ashthamsa. The native breathed his last in the main period of ascendant lord of ashthamsa and sub-period of Jupiter occupying the sixth house in both rasi and ashthamsa.

Mercury is placed in the twelfth house and its dispositor is debilitated. All factors governing the longevity are weak. The native breathed his last at the age of 39 years during the main period of the functional malefic and debilitated Jupiter and sub-period of Mercury. In ashthamsa, weak Jupiter is placed in the eighth house and weak Mercury also occupies the twelfth house.

The most effective point of the ascendant is closely aspected and afflicted by Rahu. The ascendant lord, Venus, is placed in the third house. Jupiter, Venus’s dispositor, is badly placed and debilitated in navamsa. The most malefic planet, Mercury, is on the most effective point of the third house

afflicting the third and ninth houses and making the planets placed in the third and ninth houses weak. Mercury, also closely afflicts the Moon by way of an aspect and the ascendant lord, Venus, by way of a conjunction. Therefore, Venus, the prime determinant of longevity, is weak and afflicted. The significator of longevity, Saturn, is badly placed in the twelfth house in rasi and ashthamsa. In ashthamsa the Sun is debilitated and also badly placed. Mixed influences touch the prime and supplementary determinants. Medium life span can be assessed for the native. During the main period of Mercury, the lord of the twelfth house, and sub-period of Rahu, the native breathed his last at the age of 37 years.

The weakness of Venus, its bad placement and its close affliction to the most effective point of the sixth house signifying health, reduces the life span. When this chart was presented to the author, this observation was made and the native was provided with a Kavach for strengthening of Venus. Just five days before his death in the sub-period of Venus in the main period of Saturn, the native removed the Kavach from his person and suffered a massive heart attack to which he succumbed five days later.

The ascendant is closely afflicted by the malefic aspects of Jupiter and Saturn. The most malefic planet, Saturn, closely aspects and afflicts the lord of the ascendant. Saturn, being the lord of the eighth house and the significator for longevity, is closely afflicted by the sixth lord. Mercury is the weakest planet and is closely afflicted by Jupiter. Whenever the lord of the ascendant has some strength, the weakness and affliction of some other planet may cause ill health concerning that planet but there is less danger to the longevity. The native breathed his last on 6th November, 1992, after a paralytic attack during the sub-period of Venus in the main period of Mercury at the age of 64 years.

The functional malefic Sun is closely conjunct with the most effective point of the sixth house, as well. The most malefic planet, Mars, closely afflicts the most effective points of the fifth, eleventh and twelfth houses. Venus is closely conjunct with the eighth lord, Mars, and is highly afflicted. The Moon is badly placed and is afflicted by the Sun and Mars. Jupiter is badly placed and is under the close aspect of Rahu. Saturn, being the significator of longevity, is weak as the most effective point of the house of its placement is closely afflicted by the most malefic planet. In ashthamsa the mooltrikona sign of afflicted Venus rises. All the functional benefic planets are utterly weak and afflicted. Within a few hours of the birth, the transit Moon also came under the exact affliction of Rahu, which took the life of the child away. We do not think any other system of measuring the strength of planets and life span can be so pin pointing. At the time of death the child was running the sub-period of Saturn, the lord of the afflicted sixth house, in the main period of Ketu.

This verse from "Sri Ramcharitmanas" gives us the key to happiness. Unless one feels content with one’s lot, the mind would be restless and would always be craving for something or the other. Jupiter and the Sun, when strong, indicate the overall happiness in a nativity including elevation of the soul. So to say, happiness and spiritual attainments in life are indicated by the position of Jupiter and the Sun in a nativity.

The Sun is the significator of father, status in life, vitality, soul and is secondary significator for male progeny.

Jupiter, the planet of "Divine Grace" is significator for all the good things in life. It is the lord of the ninth sign of the zodiac and natural significator for bhagya (fortune). Its main significations are blessing one with auspiciousness, sons, wealth, good conduct, ministership and good health by giving a healthy liver which is the factory of human body for nourishment of all its parts. It also represents charitable disposition.

The learned Kalayana Verma in his book, Saravali, stated that Jupiter rules auspiciousness, virtue, prowess, preceptorship, deputation, gold, social position, gains, residence and sons. Varahamihira in Brihat Jataka says that Jupiter represents wisdom and happiness. It is moral and controls treasury. Saravarth Chintamani, states that whenever in a nativity Jupiter is in fall, the native

concerned is less virile, grieved and is in adversity, mean in conduct, dunce, bad end, penury, serves others, bereft of auspiciousness, memory, purity, etc. Experience shows that one is not only grieved but crosses the border of morality/wisdom to achieve one's ends and becomes selfish and unsatisfied. One is intemperate. Efforts made do not give desired results. Both physical and mental sufferings are caused to the native. It is especially harmful in the case of females as it is the significator of "husband" in a female nativity. In Indian cultural background a female is treated as "reborn" after her marriage takes place. Her post-marital life depends on the position of Jupiter in her natal chart to a large extent. The life may seem to be settled otherwise but during the main/sub-period of a weak and afflicted Jupiter, it suddenly becomes shattered or crumbled. Jupiter, who is known for removing afflictions/weakness of other planets and houses, when afflicted itself, causes misfortunes.

The lord of the ninth house when strong in the nativity, acts as an additional Sun for the person. Before citing a few charts where the natives met with misfortunes changing the course of their lives during the main period/bhukti of a weak and afflicted Jupiter, we would like to add that astrological advice does have the competence of reducing the mental and physical sufferings caused. The parents of the children born with such combinations will have to work very hard from the very beginning in forming the right attitude of kindness and helping/serving others. Righteous conduct is the key to all remedial measures. To sum up, the significations of Jupiter suffer in case it is weak or afflicted. Though in some cases the lord of the ninth house may either occupy the house or aspect it fully, yet during the sub-period of an eclipsed Jupiter the native is aggrieved on account of the significations of Jupiter.

The studies show that even where the Sun was lord of an auspicious house, and no astrological remedial measures to remove the weakness of Jupiter were taken, the combustion of Jupiter in transit inflicted sufferings upon the natives relating to general and particular significations of Jupiter. This leads us to conclude that the clues provided by classical texts on the result of weak planets including combust planets hold good if the functional benefic combust planets are not strengthened.

All planets placed in the fourth house become weak. The girl could not get married in spite of the best efforts of her parents. In spite of the eleventh lord occupying its sign of exaltation, the girl could not get employment. The reason, apparently, is the

combustion of the dispositor of the eleventh lord and eleventh lord occupying its debilitated navamsa. Mercury is combust and under the close aspect of Rahu which has put a tremendous amount of nervous pressure on the native due to remaining unmarried and unemployed.

The placement of the lord of the eighth house on the most effective point of the eighth house is good for long life, rich inheritance, easy gains, etc. but for the matters of status rise, birth of a male child and accumulation of wealth this is a very negative factor. The native suffered on account of male progeny. He lost his four male issues, two by way of abortions in advanced stages and two in premature deliveries. Due to the exalted Moon in sapthamsa ascendant, the native has four daughters.

The weak planets and the exact/close afflictions caused many fortune reversals for the native. The native was not blessed with male progeny up to the age of 35 years. Remedial measures for strengthening Jupiter and propitiating the functional malefic planets have blessed the native with a male child.

From Jupiter sub-period in the main period of the Sun onwards the native developed strange food habits, enmity with mother and disinterest in his education. He left school in Ketu bhukti in the Sun main period. Remedial measures for strengthening of Jupiter and Sun and for propitiating Rahu and the Moon were prescribed. The boy started showing improvement, was readmitted to the school and continued his education. That way, the lord of the tenth house in a particular nativity whenever associated with the fourth house in strength, gives journeys/residences to/in foreign countries. Sarvarath Chintamani connects the seventh house and the ninth house with foreign travel. The strong lord of the eighth house, ruling overseas journeys and inheritance/easy gains, gives income from foreign lands when connected with the houses ruling income and professional matters.

The tenth, seventh, ninth and twelfth houses rule foreign travel and residence. The lord of the tenth house connected with the tenth or twelfth house also indicates journey to foreign/distant lands. The profitability of stay/visits in a foreign country depends on the strength of the significators involved. Rahu's connection with houses connected with foreign journeys/residence or with the fourth house which rules native place also indicates foreign journeys. During ancient times, however, even states in south, east and west India, were treated as foreign places for northern Indian states as these were under different kings and had altogether different sets of cultures.

The sign of a royal planet like the Sun, the Moon or affluent planets Venus, Jupiter, Mars, etc. indicate the level of affluence of the profession of a native and the income, there from.

The lords of the second, third and ninth houses, if containing mooltrikona signs, also act as the Sun. The strength of the lords of these signs and the operating planetary periods hold the key to decipher the planetary influences. Similarly, understanding the nature of planets becoming significators for profession and the planets exerting close influence on the houses ruling professional matters is necessary.

The lords of the tenth and the second houses, if containing mooltrikona signs, are considered as the primary determinants for analysing the professional affairs. The significations of planets fructify during their own main/sub-period as per their strength. The readers may please note the stress being laid on the strength of the planets. The weakness of the planets in a nativity is the very reason of existence of this divine science. It is but natural that a native may approach an astrologer in the hour of difficulty and thereafter he may like to utilize the services of this divine science without being faced with the problems but to avoid the incidence of problems as also to augment his ventures for optimum benefits. The real job is to find out the true strength of those planets which are apparently strong in the rasi chart of a nativity. As per Maharishi Parashara the weak planets of the natal chart do not acquire any strength in any of the Vargas. In fact delineating anything from a natal chart requires application of the principles in a comprehensive manner. Most of the times, the significators may be overlapping and indicating more than one area of pursuit, while a person might have one of the area as a hobby. Similarly, a planet signifies variety of occupations. For example (1) the Sun signifies administration, practice of medicine, politics, etc. (2) Venus signifies practice of life saving drugs, the business of artistic nature, engineering or luxury items, financial advisor's role, etc. (3) Mercury signifies dealing in writing, accountancy, analytical studies, application of law, designing work of engineering involving calculations, etc. (4) The Moon signifies love and care, house keeping, public relations, etc. (5) Mars signifies execution, commandership in the armed forces, initiative and entrepreneurship, etc. (6) Jupiter signifies practice of law, teaching, financial management, advisory roles, propagation of spirituality, Astrology, etc. (7) Saturn signifies participation in mass production involving large work force, low technology industry, leadership of labor/industrial workers, service, etc.

What we have to see is which type of influence is more in operation and has to synchronize the same with the operating planetary periods. As a group, those planets which exert more influence indicate the choice or area of profession. The prominence, fame, wealth or notable contributions in various fields is the result of a group of strong planets congruent in nature. The group of Venus, Jupiter and Mercury may indicate the area of profession as advisory role in financial institutions or in financial matters, legal advice, or collectively legal and financial areas. The confluence of the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, etc. as a group may indicate good positions in administration. The confluence of Venus, Saturn, Mercury and Mars may indicate a profession of engineering. The confluence of Mercury, Mars, Venus and the Sun may indicate a profession in the technology sectors. Further classification in the major field depends on the leading role of one of the significators. When the significators are weak or the main period of weak planets is in operation, the natives go in for routine jobs i.e. clerical or mechanics, sales representatives/assistants, etc. or merely work as helping hands. For entering into business the role of the third house and the Sun, Venus and Mercury is supreme as they provide planning, trading and organizing capabilities.
