Aries a small faint constellation with its brightest stars, Hamal and Sharatan, making up the Ram’s head. Discovered in Aries in 2003 is the star Teergarden, one of our

own Sun’s closest neighbours at only 12 light years away. In both the northern and southern hemispheres, Aries is best seen at midnight in the

midheaven when the Sun is in Libra during September and October.

❖ The Taurus glyph represents the horns of a bull symbolising the ability to gather, receive and stabilise energy. The bull, an ancient symbol of fertility and abundance, was a central figure in fertility rites and initiations, and also symbolised the victory of humanity over its animal nature.

! Taurus is an easy constellation to see because of its well defined V-shape near Orion and the Pleiades star cluster. The bright star, Aldebaran, an orange giant, depicts the eye of the bull. The Pleiades, a beautiful open star cluster, is often called the Seven Sisters and forms the bull’s shoulder. The Hyades, a more spread-out open star cluster, forms the bull’s head. In both the northern and the southern hemispheres, Taurus is best seen when the Sun is in Scorpio in the midheaven at midnight during October and November.

! Gemini is easily identifiable by its brightest star, Castor, and second brightest, Pollux. These stars form the heads of the twins and another two stars create the twins’ feet, making up the distinct lines that resemble the Gemini glyph. The constellation Gemini is close to the ecliptic, and in both the northern and southern hemispheres is best seen in the midheaven at midnight when the Sun is in Sagittarius in November and December.

Cancer is a faint constellation positioned right on the ecliptic, resembling a Y-shape.The brightest star in Cancer is Acubens, one of the crab’s claws. The main feature of Cancer is an open star cluster called the The Beehive (Praesepe), consisting of over 200 stars. In both the northern and the southern hemispheres, Cancer is best seen at midnight in the midheaven when the Sun is in Capricorn in December and January.
