moons, nebulae and galaxies are studied.

It covers everything in the universe.

Astrology• The study of the positions and aspects of things in

the universe. • Commonly referred to as ‘Our Horoscope’ • There is a belief that they have an influence on

the course of natural earthly occurrences and human affairs.

THE CONSTELLATIONS

• Astrology is a not a genuine science . It claims that the positions of the heavenly bodies have an effect on the lives of human beings and events on Earth.

• People studied the motions of the planets and hoped to used them to predict the behavior of the heavens, wars, natural disasters, the rise and fall of kings, and other earthly matters. However, around the time of Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton, astronomers realised that astrology was inaccurate.

• Astrologers use computer programs to locate the positions of the planets rather than observations using telescopes

• Astronomers and scientists, make careful measurements and well-controlled studies using maths and physics.

• Astrologers don't do experiments to prove their theories. They rely on stories people tell and anecdotal evidence.

• An astronomer is not an astrologer!

• Astrologers believe zodiac constellations, play a role in determining the course of a person’s life. Most people know their ‘star sign’; because this is the constellation which the sun is in on their birthday.

• Due to the ‘wobble’ of the axis of the Earth, the dates most modern horoscopes use have shifted out of phase with the actual stars.

• Horoscopes also fail to take into account the fact that the Sun passes through the constellation Ophiuchus.

Why Astronomy is not Astrology• Your birth star sign was determined by the path the sun

took through the constellations

• The sun passes through 13 constellations not 12

• If Astrology was scientific then most people would pick their actual star sign.

• There is discrepancy between the dates for each constellation depending on whether you are using Astronomy or Astrology criteria.

• Astrology does not account for the wobble of the earth on its axis.

• Astrology does not account for the path of the sun travelling through the constellations changing over time.

• Astrology does not account for the 13th constellation – Ophiuchus.
