goriLLAs under ThreAT• Loss of habitat, eg human land use in Rwanda, is intense, being the most densely populated African country (illegal crops and cattle grazing destroy gorilla habitat).

• Poaching - for meat and all other body parts - all primates are in great illegal demand.

• Illegal trade in live gorillas - they are much sought after for zoos and collectors worldwide.

where do goriLLAs Live?• Gorillas live in dense, moist tropical forest.

• Mountain gorillas roam in the Virunga Volcano mountains, straddling Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, between 7,800 feet and 11,000 feet, and the Bwindi Forest Reserve in Uganda.

• Lowland populations are hard to estimate due to difficult habitat in Cameroon, Congo, Guinea, Nigeria, Gabon and Democratic Republic of Congo.

• Ranges cover up to 15 square miles and are often shared with neighbouring families.

goriLLAs Are smArT!To communicate gorillas use gestures, body postures, facial expressions, vocal sounds, chest slaps, drumming and odours. Although they cannot make the sounds of human speech, gorillas are capable of understanding spoken languages and they can learn to communicate in sign language.

Gorillas laugh when they are tickled and cry when they are sad or hurt. Gorillas cry with sounds, not tears.

iT’s A goriLLA’s LiFe…Gorillas sleep about 13 hours a night and rest for several hours at midday. They build new sleeping nests every night by bending nearby plants into a springy platform, usually on the ground or in low trees.

Adult gorillas spend their time feeding, grooming and resting; youngsters devote more time to play – climbing, chasing and wrestling.

Gorillas are mainly vegetarian, eating root vines, saplings, herbs, leaves, roots, stems, fruits, nuts, berries, succulent wild celery stems, tender pith of Vernonia shrubs and occasionally grubs. Adult males consume up to 30 kilos per day.

meeT The FAmiLy• Gorillas live in close social family groups of 5 to 40.

• A typical troop has a dominant ‘silverback’ leader (they have a silvery-white saddle of hair on their backs), adolescent male ‘blackbacks’ and females with young.

• They are affectionate and care for family members.

• Silverbacks have two objectives: to compete for mates and defend their families. As leader and protector, they often have to confront their principle enemy: MAN.

• Females breed from about 8 years and males at about 15 years.

• Pregnancy (gestation) lasts 8.5 months.

• Usually one baby is born, weighing about 2 kilos. Twins are rare.

• Riding piggyback, they don’t leave their mothers to start exploring until 4-6 months and they suckle for up to 2 years.

• 40-50% of infants die, mostly from respiratory illness or accidents.

conservATion • The first National Park set up to protect gorillas was Albert Park in 1925, later becoming Parc National des Virunga (Democratic Republic of Congo), Parc National des Volcans (Rwanda) and the Gorilla Game Sanctuary (Uganda).

• Following Pioneer conservation research by George Schaller, Dian Fossey began her pilgrimage to save gorillas in Democratic Republic of Congo in 1967. Within months, war forced her into Rwanda, where on Mount Visoke she founded the Karisoke Research Centre.

• Dian devoted her life to studying and protecting the gorillas, creating new insights into gorilla ecology and behaviour.

• In 1979, the Mountain Gorilla Project began to develop protection and tourism and introduce conservation education.

• Despite civil wars in the regions, gorilla protection remains relatively strong.

how does The FuTure Look?• Without gorillas, the forests in Rwanda would be cultivated and other species would die.

• Basic issues of human population growth and land use are critical to the gorilla’s survival.

• Nationwide official approaches to gorilla conservation have influenced attitudes so that local people benefit from gorillas. Local communities will ultimately determine the gorilla’s fate.

dAvid shepherd wiLdLiFe FoundATion’s roLe in supporT oF criTicALLy endAngered mAmmALsFor over 40 years David and his Foundation, DSWF, have been funding projects to save the world’s critically endangered mammals.

DSWF has supported the work of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and other primate projects in central Africa. Funding is currently supporting anti-poaching and undercover investigations to help expose the illegal wildlife traffickers who place the Mountain gorilla and other critically endangered species at risk of extinction.

‘The loss of one of man’s closest living relatives would be tragic. This gentle giant is an essential link in the African ecosystem. Join DSWF today and help save the world’s critically endangered mammals in the wild - tomorrow may be too late.’ DavidShepherd OBE
