Introduction Just when you thought the ASUS ZenBook range couldn’t get any better … it
just did. The iconic design, supermodel-slim aluminium chassis and vibrant
screen have been teamed with Intel’s latest sixth-generation processors, the
Skylake family, to create a family of notebooks that combines beauty, brains
and brawn, whether you’re using it at home, at work, at school, at university or
out and about It’s bound to turn heads.
The latest additions to the multi award-winning ZenBook family are the
UX305CA and the UX305UA. Combining craftsmanship with leading-edge
technology, the new ZenBooks offer a choice of configurations to make a
gorgeous addition to your lifestyle, whether you’re after an efficient,
lightweight notebook that will keep going for as long as you do, or whether you
need an elegant device whose good looks match its top-of-the-range
computing power.
As well as good looks, these exceptional Ultrabooks are crafted to sit right in
the sweet spot of power and value. Previous Ultrabooks from other
manufacturers have made compromises on power and memory to create slim,
light devices, but the new ASUS ZenBooks are carefully designed to incorporate
the latest processors from Intel, balanced with fast SSDs and plenty of fast
RAM – and all at an affordable price.
This is the Ultrabook designed to look better, perform better, be more power-
efficient and, best of all, and achieve better value for money than other similar
devices such as the MacBook Air. Lightweight, elegant, powerful and efficient,
the ASUS ZenBook, which comes with Windows 10, is the perfect choice for the
highly mobile user who wants a notebook to fit into their lives.
First impressions The first thing you’ll notice when you take your new notebook out of its box is
that the ZenBook’s good looks have got even better. The UX305UA comes in a
choice of two colours – Obsidian Black or Icicle Gold.
Of course, a ZenBook is instantly recognisable thanks to its all-aluminium
chassis, super-slim profile and the concentric circle finish on the lid. The new
colours make it even more distinctive.
The new colours bring a new dimension to those looks: Obsidian Black is an
elegant, brushed-metal finish that takes the iconic concentric-circle design and
brings it right up to date with the sophisticated black spin. It’s a finish that will
appeal to the young and sophisticated mobile professional who wants
something understated but classy.
Or choose Aurora Metallic, a stylish yet subtle brushed-metal finish that adds a
touch of elegance and luxury to the iconic slim and light design.
These smart colours make the ZenBook stand out from the crowd, especially
compared to the MacBook Air, which only comes in one colour, grey. The
ZenBook is also thinner and lighter than the MacBook Air, not to mention
other 13-inch Ultrabooks such as Dell’s XPS13 and Microsoft’s SurfaceBook.
There’s a third colour choice too for the really discerning user: silky-smooth
Ceramic White, which is an exclusive option for the UX305CA with the Core M
processor The Ceramic White finish feels particularly luxurious to the touch
with its understated matte finish that’s continued when you open the lid.
Whichever colour you choose, the ZenBook, with its brilliant diamond-cut
chamfered edges and elegantly slim profile, will always be a glamorous yet
hardworking companion.
As you take the ZenBook out of its box for the first time, you’ll also notice how
incredibly light it is. Weighing a whisper over 1kg (the UX305CA weighs 1.2kg,
the UX305UA is 1.3kg), the ZenBook is a notebook that you’ll barely notice as
you carry it around with you – until of course you take it out of your bag and
set it up, when its elegant good looks are hard to miss and are guaranteed to
turn heads.
Another thoughtful touch you will notice when you open the lid is how the
keyboard is set at a gentle slope, making typing easier. That’s thanks to the
careful hinge design, which lifts the keyboard up slightly to a comfortable
typing angle.

Stunning display on a QHD+ screen Opening the lid gives you even more of a sense of how whisper-thin the
ZenBook is: its elegant profile reveals how beautiful design is embedded in the
ZenBook family’s DNA.
The screen itself continues the theme of quality and elegance: the matte finish
on the ultra-sharp 13.3in IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel provides an anti-glare
display that delivers richer and deeper colours and a satisfying viewing
experience for whatever you’re doing, whether it’s watching a movie, working
or connecting with friends and family.
You have a choice of screen with these new ZenBooks: choose between the
QHD+ display (3200x1800) or the FHD display (1920x1080. This creates an
amazing pixel density of 276 pixels per in (PPI), and a brightness of up to
350cd/m2 with a colour gamut of 72% NTSC and 100% Srgb. This means that
text and images are always pin-sharp and ultra-detailed. That’s twice as sharp
as the equivalent 13inch MacBook Air.
Whichever you pick, you’ll benefit from the superb viewing angle of 178
degrees, meaning that the sweet spot from which to view your ZenBook is
bigger than on many other Ultrabooks and also Apple’s MacBook Air: reviews
of the Air particularly noted the disappointing viewing angles.
The wide viewing angle also
means that more than one
person can look at the screen
without noticing colour shifts
and other distortions, making
the new ZenBook perfect for
sharing: watch a movie with a
friend or collaborate with a
colleague comfortably.
The UX305CA also offers the option of a touchscreen to upgrade your
experience. A touchscreen makes the most of Windows 10, Microsoft’s latest
operating system, which is designed to offer the best of both a traditional
desktop and the bonuses of a touchscreen: rather than using the touchpad,
imagine just dragging your finger up and down the screen to scroll, and
launching applications with a simple tap on the screen rather than clicking or
tapping the touchpad or mouse.
As you’d expect from the
ZenBook, the touchscreen is also
engineered to be exceptional:
the touchscreen is more
responsive than those found on
other Ultrabooks. ASUS
engineers have incorporated
actuators that sense your touch
when just 6mm of your fingertip
touches the screen – industry-
standard touchscreens can’t
sense your fingertip until 9mm touches the panel. This means that ASUS
touchscreens offer a superior response and user experience.
Making a great screen even better To make the most of the beautiful and super-responsive screen, ASUS
engineers have developed the signature ASUS Splendid Technology to enhance
the display of your notebook. This display colour gamut correction technology
means that ZenBooks reproduce richer and deeper colours to make your
viewing experience stunning, whatever you’re looking at.
And you won’t be straining your eyes if you make the most of the ZenBook’s
superb battery life (up to 12 hours for the UX305UA) by watching movies or
box-sets or even working hard: ASUS engineers have also thought of that. The
ZenBooks come with ASUS Eye Care Technology to reduce the level of blue
light from the screen. While most other screens, on Ultrabooks, Macs and
other devices, emit blue light, which is implicated in macular degeneration and
retinal problems, ASUS Eye Care Technology addresses that concern by
reducing the blue light levels from the ZenBook display by 33%, making viewing
more comfortable and protecting your precious eyesight. The Splendid app lets
you choose the mode you prefer for the screen – Normal, Vivid or Eye care,
which reduces the level of blue light. Or you can adjust the colour temperature
of the screen manually to make it perfect for you.
That means that being tempted to carry on using your beautiful ZenBook
means you won’t be putting your eyes at risk.
It’s easy to turn on the Eye Care mode: just launch the ASUS Splendid utility
either by searching via the Windows button or from a tile on the Start screen
or from an icon on the desktop. You’ll see four buttons, offering a choice of
Normal, Eye Care or Vivid mode, plus a button that launches the more
Normal Mode Eye Care Mode Manual Mode Vivid Mode
advanced interface that allows you to tweak the colour and saturation of the
display. Simply click the Eye Care button and you’ll immediately see the change:
the colours on the display are suddenly much warmer and more restful,
reducing eyestrain, especially in low light or late at night, and making your
notebook even more of a pleasure to use.
PixelMaster HDR – perfect for video The ZenBook UX305UA/CA is perfect for recording video, whether you’re
making content for YouTube or Skyping loved ones, thanks to PixelMaster HDR
technology combined with the HD camera. Together they provide stunning
quality in full-screen high definition at an ultra-smooth 30 frames per second
(fps).
Even in challenging light, PixelMaster HDR Technology ensures that your face is
always clearly visible when you’re facing the video camera or even in a relative
dark lighting enviroment . With other notebooks, if you’re sitting with your
back to the window, your face will be too dark as the camera automatically
compensates for the light behind you. Not so with the ZenBookUX305:
PixelMaster HDR means that your viewers will always see your face clearly.

Stunning performance from great hardware Any concerns about compromise in the elegant thin and light design are
banished when you look at the specifications of these ZenBooks.
ASUS has balanced the best-in-class processors with plenty of fast memory and
storage. The new ZenBooks ship with up to 8GB of LPDDR3 1600MHz RAM.
While previous notebooks based on the fifth-generation Core M processors
made compromises on power to achieve the elegant thin and light design,
there’s no compromise at all with the Skylake processors. ASUS engineers have
chosen Intel’s latest family of processors for the new ZenBooks: the sixth-
generation Skylake processors. The two models of ZenBook are powered by
either the power-efficient Core M processors or the CPUs that focus on
computing power, the Core I processors.
That means that even the base-configuration ZenBooks will handle
multitasking with aplomb: RAM is the PC’s dynamic memory, where it stores
data in current use so that applications can handle what you’re doing as fast as
possible. Choosing LPDDR3 RAM means that the ZenBook will be able to move
data back and forth quickly, so you won’t notice any lag or delay while you get
on with editing your pictures and videos, playing a game or putting together a
presentations.
The new family of ZenBooks ships with solid-state drives (SSDs) rather than the
old-fashioned spinning drive found in some other Ultrabooks. An SSD means
much better performance: the ZenBook boots into Windows in a matter of
seconds, even from a cold start, because it doesn’t have to wait for the disk to
spin up as is the case with older hard drives still found in other notebooks.
Additionally, an SSD handles data faster than the traditional HDD. Combined
with Windows 10, which is optimised for this cutting-edge hardware, this
means that the ZenBook UX305 not only looks amazing, it also offers blazing-
fast performance.
You can be sure that your ZenBook will cope with demanding software such as
Photoshop: there is no annoying lag while you tweak and enhance your
photographs. It’s the same with video-editing, working with a huge, complex
spreadsheet or even playing a videogame.
ASUS has carefully paired Intel’s latest integrated graphics processing units
(iGPU) with the newest sixth-generation Skylake processors to provide an
optimal balance of cutting-edge technology, power and energy efficiency.
The power-efficient UX305CA’s video is powered by Intel’s HD Graphics 515
iGPU, which has a base clock speed of 300MHz and a maximum of 1GHz,
supporting a maximum resolution of 3840x2160.
The performance-focused UX305UA pairs a Core I processor with the next-
generation Intel HD Graphics 520 iGPU with a base clock speed of 300MHz and
maximum of 1050MHz.
There are a number of configuration options with these new ZenBooks: the
base configuration offers a 128GB SSD, and you can choose to upgrade to
either a 256GB or 512GB SSD. Each drive has a read speed of more than
500MB/s and offers write speeds of more than 400MB/s.
It’s amazing how much processing power lurks under the hood – it just goes to
show that you should never judge a notebook by its cover.
Diving into the UX305UA If you choose the UX305UA ZenBook, you’ve already picked the Ultrabook that
will keep up with whatever computing task you throw at it. This ZenBook has
been built around the sixth-generation Core I processor, with a choice of the
Core i3-6100U, the Core i5-6200U or the top of the range Core i7-6500U CPU.
The benchmarking tests make clear how good the performance is: the Core i7
notebook scored an impressive total of P5795 in the 3DMark Vantage tests,
with the breakdown between the GPU and CPU scores also showing how
powerful the new HD500 integrated graphics chip is. The overall GPU score in
the 3DMark Vantage test was 4978, while the CPU score was a stunning 11381.
PCMark 08 benchmarks also show how the UX305UA with Intel’s sixth-
generation “Skylake” processor takes computing performance to the next level
compared to the fifth-generation CPUs: the UX305CA scored an overall 2361
compared to the previous UX305LA model, which scored 2175.
The benchmarks also show how the video performance is improved with the
Skylake CPUs. The video chat/encoding score has improved to 104.3ms
(previously 117.0ms). Photo-editing is smoother, too, scoring 0.597s compared
to the previous-generation device’s score of 0.75s.
Diving into the UX305CA The UX305CA ZenBook is designed for power efficiency, and so ASUS engineers
have built this model around the latest Intel Core M Skylake family of
processors.
This model also benefits from ASUS’s careful fanless design, which makes this
laptop silent in use: tests prove that it runs at 0dB. That’s thanks to ASUS
ThermoMaster technology, which uses an ultra-thin 0.5mm heatpipe teamed
with an exclusive capillary structure. So not only does it keep the heat away
from your hands by diverting it from the touchpad, it’s also the best choice for
the considerate user who doesn’t want their notebook to disturb others late at
night, in the library or indeed anywhere that noise could be an issue.
And it will keep going for as long as you do: the Core M processors, which run
at up to 3.1GHz while drawing only 7W TDP, means that the 45Whr battery can
keep you working and playing for up to 10 hours.
With this model, you’ve got a choice of the cutting-edge Core m3-6Y30, the
Core m5-6Y54 or the top of the range Core m7-6Y75 CPU. This family of
processors is designed to keep your ZenBook running for as long as possible,
and offer a battery life of up to 10 hours, meaning that the truly mobile
professional will be able to keep working and playing all day and well into the
evening.
Delivering the ZenBook’s stunning battery life isn’t just about the processor
choice. ASUS engineers have also made sure that these ZenBooks keep their
cool so that you will too – an overheating CPU can mean the notebook slows
down or even crawls to a halt.
Better thermal management That might be an issue with some other Ultrabooks, but not with the latest
ZenBooks. These ZenBooks come with ASUS IceCool Technology as standard,
reshaping the internal design of the notebook to keep the warmer components
away from the palm rest, which maintains a temperature of between 28C and
35C – lower than your body temperature so that it always feels cool to the
touch.
The UX305CA boasts a unique fanless design, which means it dissipates heat
much more efficiently. This uses an ultra-thin 0.5mm heat pipe with an
exclusive capillary structure that efficiently keeps the heat away from the
touchpad – and away from your hand. And of course the fanless technology
means that it’s also whisper-quiet. The UX305CA will not only stay cool, calm
and collected whatever you throw at it, it also remains whisper-quiet,
contributing to its overall elegantly understated vibe.
Using the ZenBook The new family of ZenBooks come pre-loaded with Windows 10, the most up-
to-date version of Microsoft’s operating system.
Taking the best parts of the much-loved Windows 7 OS and adding a modern
look, ease of use and the most up-to-date touch features for those who choose
the touchscreen version of the UX305UA, Windows 10 offers a perfect mix of
productivity and play, combined with a highly efficient use of your ZenBook’s
cutting-edge components for a computing experience that’s a pleasure to use.
New, elegant and highly intuitive versions of productivity apps including Mail,
Calendar and People mean the ZenBook with Windows 10 is a pleasure to use
for work, while additional apps such as News, Money and Sport mean you will
always be up to date with what’s important in your world.
Microsoft’s new digital assistant, Cortana, is there to help you with search,
managing your time and finding things out – and Cortana has a sense of
humour, too. Ask her a range of questions from “why did the chicken cross the
road?” to “open the pod bay doors” and she will answer with her signature wry
take on life.
As well as Windows 10, the
ZenBook comes with a suite of
Asus software to help you make
the most of the notebook.
ASUS Install guides you through
the extra software options to
make sure you’ve got the best
ASUS software for your ZenBook,
while ASUS Live Update checks
that your ZenBook is running the
most up-to-date versions of
Windows and any ASUS software
installed.
Using the keyboard and touchpad The ZenBooks feature a full-sized chiclet keyboard that is a pleasure to type on.
The keys feel springy and responsive to the touch, thanks to the satisfying
1.5mm travel.
The ASUS Smart Gesture app lets you configure the touchpad to suit your way
of working. It guides you through setting your preferences for tapping, scrolling
and using gestures such as pinch-to-zoom. The touchpad itself is a good size
and silky-smooth to the touch, while clicking is a satisfyingly definite
movement that means you won’t accidentally click on something you didn’t
want to.
ASUS Smart Gesture software means you can use the touchpad in the way that
suits you best. If you’d rather not use physical clicks, you can set the software
so that with a single finger you can tap to select, activate files and applications
and drag files and folders around.
Using two fingers on the touchpad, you can activate pop-up menus, scroll in
whichever direction you prefer and pinch and zoom windows, all without
clicking manually. Three-finger gestures allow you to activate Cortana, access
notifications and task views, and switch desktops.
If you prefer to plug in a mouse, Smart Gesture allows you to turn off the
touchpad altogether and also to set up an Android device as a virtual mouse
and touchpad via ASUS’s Remote Link software. In short, you’re in control of
how you use your notebook.
Stunning sound You’ll always get stunning sound with this notebook, thanks to ASUS’s
SonicMaster technology, a unique standard developed by the ASUS Golden Ear
team. This makes the most of the premium hardware by adding specially
designed software to deliver top-of-the-range audio quality that shines
whatever you’re doing.
ASUS’s SonicMaster software is independently certified by ICEpower, ASUS’s
industry-leading partner. The overall exceptional quality is achieved thanks to
an optimised amplifier, larger speakers and resonance chambers combined
with a professional codec that work together to deliver audio of a quality that
far outstrips expectations.
Using the built-in B&O ICEpower audio system, the result is crystal-clear sound
with a deeper and richer bass and a wider sonic range, all of which combine to
deliver distinct vocals and an audio output that will impress whether you’re
watching a movie or delivering a presentation.
Not only do the speakers produce a crystal-clear sound, they are also set up to
produce a true stereo output: music and speech come clearly from the
channels they were designed for.
You can fine-tune the sound profiles using the Audio Wizard tool, which allows
you to set the right profile for the task: Music mode, Movie mode, Recording
mode, Gaming mode or Speech mode.
Music Mode balances the treble and bass to provide the best experience
for listening to your favourite tunes
Movie Mode brightens the sound so that speech is crystal clear
Gaming Mode is just what you need to be able to hear the sound effects,
music and voices in your favourite games
Speech Mode optimises the settings so that if you’re speaking to loved
ones online their voices come through loud and clear.
Off returns the settings to their default for when you’re doing everyday
computing tasks
And to make sure that your ZenBook is making the most of what you’re
listening to, ASUS deploys a professional codec to handle the sound processing
so that the ZenBook offers best-in-class sound reproduction.
While notebook speakers on devices from other manufacturers can be
disappointing, that’s definitely not the case with the new ZenBooks. Whatever
you’re doing, whether it’s listening to music, watching a film or speaking to
friends and loved ones, you’ll always be impressed by the sound quality.
Get connected Some Ultrabooks make compromises to maintain their thin and light designs.
Not the ZenBooks: looking at the side profile of these new ZenBooks reveals
that this is a notebook that means business.
All the ZenBooks have three full-sized USB ports, unlike some of its more
expensive competitors: the MacBook only has one USB port and requires
expensive adapters if users want to plug it in to an HDMI screen. On the
powerful UX305CA, all three of those are superfast USB 3.0 slots, which can
transfer data at speeds of up to 4.8Gbps, which is 10 times faster than USB 2.0,
which has a maximum data transfer speed of 480Mbps.
The power-efficient UX305UA boasts two USB 3.0 ports plus a USB 2.0 port.
That USB 2.0 port is a good slot to plug peripherals such as an external
keyboard or mouse in to while the USB 3.0 ports are great for plugging in
compatible external hard drives or USB data sticks. (Note: USB 2.0 hardware
plugged into a USB 3.0 port will transfer data at the lower speed of the older
standard.)
ASUS engineers are always looking for efficiency in the design of ZenBooks,
and so one of the USB ports on the latest family of ZenBooks incorporate ASUS
Charger+ technology. This lets you charge a device such as a tablet or
smartphone via the USB port on your ZenBook even if your notebook is asleep.
This means that you can leave behind the bulky charger for your tablet or
cellphone if you’re on the road with your ZenBook and other devices – just the
kind of thoughtful design touch that makes the new family of ZenBooks perfect
for the highly mobile professional who values efficiency as well as stunning
good looks.
Both the UX305CA and the UX305UA boast a micro-HDMI port and support
eDP, DP and DVI as well as HDMI. This means that the ZenBook can handle any
kind of screen you might want to connect it to. Thanks to the Micro HDMI port,
the ZenBook can connect to an eDP (embedded Display Port), Display Port, DVI
or HDMI output, making it incredibly versatile.
Getting online Your ZenBook will always be able to get online thanks to the latest Wi-Fi
technology coming as standard.
When it comes to wireless connections, the ZenBook offers the latest dual-
band two-stream 802.11ac technology, offering Wi-Fi performance that’s up to
three times faster than previous Wi-Fi standards, with better coverage and
battery efficiency than notebooks implementing the 802.11n standard. So
whether you’re in the office, at home or on the move, if there’s a Wi-Fi hotspot,
your ZenBook will be able to connect.
Ultra-fast Bluetooth Do you need to exchange files with someone else? There’s no need to use
clumsy workarounds such as emailing documents back and forth. Or perhaps
you want to connect a wireless peripheral to your ZenBook such as a speaker
or a keyboard and mouse.
That will be easy thanks to the fact that the new family of ZenBooks comes
with the power-efficient Bluetooth 4.0 as standard.
The power efficiency of Bluetooth 4.0 also means the ZenBook is a great
companion for some of the most up to the minute devices such as fitness and
heartbeat monitors and other wearable technology. Using Bluetooth 4.0, you
can share the data collected by those devices for analysis by specialist software.
ZenBook – part of your life There’s no denying that the latest ZenBooks are the best yet. ASUS’s engineers
have worked hard to develop notebooks that combine cutting-edge technology,
thanks to Intel’s sixth-generation Skylake processors, efficiency and power with
stunningly good looks and versatility. And best of all, the new ASUS ZenBooks
are very affordable, putting them within reach of those who care about value
for money as well as glamorous good looks and who aren’t prepared to make
compromises over performance.
The base model ZenBook UX305CA, which focuses on great battery life and
efficient working, starts at just $699. Meanwhile, the base model ZenBook
UX305UA, which packs the powerful sixth-generation Intel Core I-series
processors at its heart and which is designed to deliver computing power
alongside good looks, is stunningly good value for money with its starting price
of just $799.
If you’ve been looking at other Ultrabooks and haven’t found one that’s the
right combination of beauty, power, efficiency and price, now is the time to
take a look at ASUS’s new ZenBooks. You won’t want to look any further.
