Created by the passion of conductor Gregory Stone in 1969, the Reno Phil is northern Nevada’s largest performing arts organization, performing an array of symphonic and pops music for all tastes and ages. Celebrating its 52nd season, the orchestra, led by Music Director Laura Jackson, is a part-time, per-service orchestra composed of over 60 professional musicians who perform more than 30 concerts annually across the region, including outdoor summer concerts in Reno and at Lake Tahoe.

In addition to the professional orchestra and volunteer Reno Phil Chorus, the organization oversees and operates a robust education division with four youth orchestras, a free after school strings program at three Title 1 schools, a free family concert in the fall, and numerous other educational and outreach programs.

The pandemic has had a drastic impact on the Reno Phil, but the organization has remained commited to finding innovative ways to serve the community through both performance and its education programs.

As a federally registered 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, the Reno Phil engages an active Board of Trustees, staff, volunteers, patrons, donors, sponsors, partner organizations, and the community to ensure that it will thrive through future generations.

Jason Altieri conductor

Jason Altieri is the current Associate Conductor for the Reno Philharmonic and Music Director of the Atlanta Pops Orchestra in Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to his work in Reno and Atlanta, he spent time on the road as Music Director of the New Sigmund Romberg Orchestra and the Hollywood Film Orchestra. Having led The New Sigmund Romberg Orchestra on 7 national tours, Jason has the distinction of having conducted in every state but three and in most of the major performing venues in the United States. With the Hollywood Film Orchestra, he led several tours in Mainland China and Japan where performance venues included The People’s Hall in Beijing, China and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Numerous guest-conducting engagements include regular collaborations with the Duluth Superior Symphony in Minnesota, the Santa Fe Symphony, and the New Mexico Philharmonic. In July of 2012, Jason was the orchestra conductor for the annual International Double Reed Society Conference. During this conference, he collaborated on 16 separate works with internationally renowned soloists from all over the world.

In addition to his orchestral work, Jason is also an accomplished conductor of Opera. As Music Director of the Nevada Chamber Opera Theatre, he has led major productions with this company including a World Premiere in April of 2015. Previous Opera engagements include three North American tours with London’s Royal Carl Rosa Opera Company and an Associate Music Directorship with the Ohio Light Opera Company in the summer of 2006. His work in Ohio saw him conducting six productions and over 40 performances during their 29th season. In addition, Jason Altieri has released two recordings with the OLO on Albany Records. In 2002, Jason Altieri worked as assistant to the late Valery Vatchev of the National Bulgarian

Opera. This rare experience led to guest conducting engagements of Verdi’s La Traviata, Il Trovatore, and Rigoletto in the Czech Republic.

While Jason Altieri enjoys a busy career working with professional performing organizations, he is also a fierce advocate for young musicians and music education. This is evidenced by his position as Director of Orchestras at the University of Nevada, Reno and the Directorship of the Reno Philharmonic Youth Symphony. Under his leadership, the Reno Philharmonic Youth Symphony has become an increasingly visible component in Reno’s cultural life and has embarked on performance tours that have included guest appearances at Carnegie and Disney Halls. As a result of his tireless work with young musicians, Dr. Altieri was invited to conduct at Nevada’s Small School All-State Festival in April of 2017. His educational outreach has extended nationally as well through numerous clinics with young ensembles all over the country in addition to Faculty appointments at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Sewanee Summer Music Center.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Jason Altieri grew up in a musical family with both parents being former members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Georgia. He then went on to pursue advanced degrees in conducting from Michigan State University where he received additional mentorship from Neeme Jarvi of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Gustav Meier of the Peabody Conservatory. Jason Altieri currently resides in Reno, Nevada.

Cody Canon is a semi-professional performer and juggler who has been performing locally for the past 20 years. As a coach with Acro Enso, he teaches juggling as well as other circus arts, and has had students move on to become professional performers. Having performed on most of the stages in Reno, this will be his first time performing at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.

THE NOTE-ABLESFounded almost 20 years ago, The Note-Ables, a program of Note-Able Music Therapy Services, is a group of professional musicians who shatter the stereotype that people with disabilities have limited talents and abilities. The Note-Ables have a repertoire of more than 60 songs spanning almost eight decades. With a blend of covers and original songs, the musical style of The Note-Ables ranges from blues to country to jazz to classic rock, The Note-Ables will bring the music!”

Fascinating Rhythm School of Performing Arts (Kia’s FR Dance) is excited to perform two new dances for the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual holiday program, even with the extraordinary limits created by COVID-19’s ever-changing mandates. The protocols necessary to keep our community as healthy as possible have made for some very creative “thinking outside the box” and Fascinating Rhythm is honored to be part of 2020’s “Home for the Holidays” show, led by Jason Altieri.

Although Kia’s FR Dance misses having our popular precision tap dancers (Santa Tappers), we are thrilled to still be involved in this wonderful show. Instead of a kickline of leggy tap dancers, our lovely ladies will perform a Rockette-style jazz piece to Christmas Jazz Suite, accompanied by a brass and drum ensemble.

And to keep things interesting, our Dapper Tappers are returning from their Spirit of the Season debut in 2017 (wherein they tapped to Swingin’ Holiday). This time, they are adding their rhythmic percussion skills to a string ensemble’s version of Suite of Carols. No drums or other “beat keepers.” Truly musicians and dancers at the same time!

Reno Phil Chorus Director Jennifer Tibben is Department Chair and Director of Choirs at Damonte Ranch High School, Washoe County School District’s Performing Arts Center signature program, directing four choirs and teaching AP Music Theory. As a conductor, Jennifer serves as the artistic director and conductor of Bella Voce women’s vocal ensemble. In addition, she conducts the adult choir at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Jennifer has sung opera roles with UNR Lyric Opera, as well as with Nevada Opera. She has also served as soloist with TOCCATA, the Reno Chamber Orchestra, Reno Baroque Ensemble and with the Reno Phil Orchestra. Jennifer is an active member of both the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education. She lives in Reno with her delightful family, who, shockingly, are all out of the nest!

ALBERT RUDOLPH LEETenor Albert Rudolph Lee’s performances have been described as “vocally sumptuous,” “musically distinctive” and even “acrobatically agile.” Having appeared with Opera Theater of Saint Louis, Palm Beach Opera, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia Orchestra, Saint Luke’s Chamber Orchestra, and the Caramoor International Music Festival, Dr. Lee’s recent performances include the tenor solo in Beethoven 9th with the Jackson Symphony, a performance of George Walker’s Lilac’s for Tenor and Orchestra for the opening concert of the African American Art Song Alliance 20th Anniversary Conference, performances with Cincinnati Opera and a feature role in the world premiere of Douglas Buchanan’s opera Bessie and Ma in Storrs, CT. In his ninth year on the voice faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno, Dr. Lee’s upcoming activities include a virtual appearance with Opera Las Vegas in a tribute concert to African American Opera Legends and a spring recital at the University of Michigan.

TINTAB CHAMBER RINGERS

Comprised of members of Tintabulations and a handful of new ringers, Tintab Chamber Ringers was created in response to the new performance guidelines put in place due to COVID-19. Rest assured, this smaller group in no way sacrifices the ‘big and beautiful’ Tintab style they have spent more than two decades perfecting.

Tintabulations has always been a leader in the handbell world, and this year has been no different. In May, Tintab hosted a first-of-its-kind virtual handbell event to replace their annual in-person Spring Ring. It was a smash hit in the handbell world, attracting a much larger audience than ever would have been possible in person, with participants from all over the world. Tintab continues to grow and evolve in this virtual era, and is thrilled to once again participate in Spirit of the Season in this new format.

Still led faithfully by Barb Walsh, their technical skill and passion for music cannot be denied. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the fabulous presentation by the Tintab Chamber Ringers as part of Spirit of the Season!

MARY BENNETTMary is currently the Producing Artistic Director of Brüka Theatre in Reno and The Carson City Ghost Walk. A theatre artist in residence with Nevada Arts Council and Sierra Arts Foundation, she is an actor/playwright/director/producer/theatre maker and sometimes referred to as “that woman”. Her one woman original show: Dorothy Parker … Shivering and Sighing won Best of The San Francisco Fringe Festival and toured nationally. Stage Training and Performance include: The American Conservatory Theatre – San Francisco, Bay Area Theatre Sports (BATS), Dell Arte’ International Theatre Company, New York Stage & Film, B Street Theatre, Bruka Theatre, GLM Theatre Company, The Reno Philharmonic, Reno Jazz Orchestra, Sierra Nevada Ballet, New York Stage & Film, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and The Missoula Children’s Theatre. Mary is a Kennedy Center trained teaching artist and works as an arts integration specialist for The Sierra Arts Foundation. Film performances include: Sister Act, Dear George and Nowhere Nevada. Mary also enjoys voiceover work, advocacy, historical research, long walks on the beach and taking interesting jobs to support her art like simulated patient, perfume model, Easter Bunny and Census Worker.

MICHAEL PETERSMichael Peters has appeared in numerous productions with various Reno performing groups including Reno Little Theater, Nevada Repertory Company, Gothic North Theater, Brüka Theatre, and Area-51 Dance Theatre. During the day, Michael is an administrator in the Graduate School at UNR.
