Southwest has experienced an eventful year. We continue to make academic progress as reflected by our growing graduation rate. The Class of 2011-2012 numbered more than 1,791. We also continued to improve our facilities as we broke ground on our nursing, natural sciences and biotechnology facility. Construction is scheduled to be completed in May 2014, and classes will begin during the Fall of 2014.

We enhanced our community part-nership with the city and county to strengthen our area’s workforce and developed an effective training pro-gram to employ our citizens. This

successful program assists hundreds of individuals in achieving livable wages and employers in locating suitable employees. The need for a qualified workforce is tremendous; consequently, we have launched a campaign to raise funds for a new workforce training center that will be located on our Macon Cove Campus.

We remain ever grateful to you, our supporters, for allowing us to provide the quality and level of service that contribute to the economic growth and improve-ment in the quality of life for our citizens. We face the future with optimism as we continue to meet the educational needs of our community and continue our legacy of unparalleled service.

Cordially,

Nathan L. EssexPresident

At Southwest, family means more than just a word. It means someone is there when you need them, to lend a hand, to lift you up and to help you stand. As the President of the Foundation and an alumnus, I am proud to say that is ex-actly what we do every day. Last year we offered almost $200,000 in scholar-ships to students who were somewhere in their educational journeys; of those students, 96 percent either stayed in school or graduated. We’re proud of that, because we are proud of our students! We know our scholars, like we know our family. Their success is our success.

We hope that somewhere in these pages you will get to know a little more about the students we are so proud of, and realize there are so many more we couldn’t feature. Each student who comes here comes with a story that is filled with hope for the future. We want to make that future bright because we know some-where there is a family touched by that student’s success.

Join us and donate in order to make successful families through education. You make a difference when you do.

Sincerely,

Mary H. McDaniel President, Southwest Tennessee Community College Foundation

In the advanced manufacturing sector, a total of 732 manufacturing companies in Shelby and Fayette counties employed 36,641 individuals in 2010. New companies are opening plants in the region and others are expanding in 2013. For example, Electrolux is opening a facility to manufacture kitchen appliances and provide 1,240 new jobs. Mitsubishi is opening a production facility to manufacture large electrical transformers; this will provide for 281 new jobs at an average annual wage of $49,790. These new openings along with other manufacturer expansions represent over 3,000 new local manufacturing jobs in the short term. Demand will remain strong through 2018.

Southwest is meeting this challenge with new and innovative training programs designed with industry partners to prepare the local workforce with the interpersonal and technical skills required. Additional programs provide incumbent training that will eventually lead to college credit. Feedback from employers, as well as early statistics, reveal that employees who have completed our programs are immediately productive and assimilate into work teams quickly. In addition to the 4,000 new jobs coming to Memphis through 2018, more than 40 percent of the current area workforce is expected to retire in the next 10 to 15 years. Our programs will permit advanced training to current employees who can then fill the roles of these experienced workers. Our non-credit staff is working hand-in-hand with our for-credit faculty, ensuring the programs will allow participants to “stack” their credits, leading to associate certificates or degrees and possible transfer to a four-year university.

In June 2012, the Foundation Board voted to launch AIM Southwest, a capital campaign to design and build a 12,000 to 15,000 square foot, two-story facility ideally suited for a world-class business and industry training center. The Macon Cove Campus location of the engineering technologies building will allow sharing of resources, including equipment used to train our for-credit and not-for-credit engineering technologies students and our mechanical and electronic industrial maintenance technicians. The estimated building and equipping cost of the facility is $3,500,000. This facility will enable Southwest to prepare an estimated 1,152 individuals trained per year.

Southwest has committed over $1,000,000 in land, equipment, training, and faculty to AIM. We believe we will continue to provide resources as the programs flourish.

Industry partners have donated, thus far, more than $45,000 in time working hand-in-hand with our instructors to bring their company philosophy directly to the students. They have also donated in excess of $80,000 in equipment and are currently forming an advisory committee to help drive curriculum needs.

Our vision includes developing a training center that supports every level of business from front-line worker to managers and executives. This center focuses on closing the achievement gap and bridging the gap from poverty. It highlights earning a living wage and finding pride in employment. It creates a better Tennessee: it educates Tennesseans and ensures better compensated jobs; it delivers industry to a city and county that awaits it; and it conveys hope to Tennesseans in need of confidence and success. This center advances manufacturing and advances Tennessee. We must move forward now.

Putting the Mid-South to Work

Construction has begun on Southwest Tennessee Community College’s new Nursing, Natural Sciences and Biotechnology Facility and is scheduled to be complete in May 2014, with classes beginning fall 2014. When the facility is complete, the College will have the capacity to increase its nursing program by 45 percent, filling a health care gap in the Mid-South with immediate bed-side nurses.

The following donors have contributed to the major gifts campaign since its inception and invested in the future of not only Southwest but also our community.

He is a mother’s dream: well groomed, polite and punctual. He answers every sentence with a “yes, ma’am” and always looks you in the eye when he speaks. He’s ambitious and smart. The Bornblum Brothers Scholar, Phillip Wilson is an unusual young man for his age, not because he is so well-mannered, but because he knows exactly what he wants out of life.

Wilson is pursuing his A.A.S in automotive technologies. If you ask him what else he would do, he pauses: “I enjoy doing this. I catch on very quickly, and I can’t really think of anything else I would rather do. I guess if I had to pick something else, I might go with heating and air repair only because there’s always steady work.” Wilson chose Southwest when he toured here and saw the automotive program at work. A recent Germantown High School graduate, Wilson wanted more than just the usual certifications that can come with automotive work. “I wanted a degree because I wanted another route. I felt like I needed my Associates. I want more.”

A native Memphian, Wilson credits his father for his love of cars and mentions his internship with him at European Service Works as being instrumental in his early career. At Southwest, Wilson credits Martin Gambill and Dale Railston for his success in the automotive program. “Mr. Gambill has been my advisor, and he’s been such a huge help. Both he and Mr. Railston have taught me things I would have never even thought about. I learn something new every day.” Wilson also says speech teacher Lisa Coleman changed his life. “She taught me how to better communicate with a group and not be so nervous. Before her, I didn’t want to speak out in class, but now I am comfortable.”

Wilson says he is really grateful for the opportunity to come to Southwest. “My scholarship gives me the ability to come to college and still be financially stable.” He says he’s also happy he chose Southwest. “I would recommend Southwest to anyone that wants to start their education to come here. There are so many opportunities here. It’s been so amazing here for me, and I’ve met a lot of great people. Everyone at Southwest is so nice. The opportunities here are endless.”

Phillip Wilson

Dear Mr. Bornblum,

I would like to thank you again for the amazing opportunity provided by this scholarship. I had a great first semester in college, and this se-mester is going well, too. I have been trying very hard to keep my grades up; last semester, I finished with a 3.6 GPA! I was very pleased with that, but I think my parents may have been even more excited than I was! I love my experience at Southwest. The campus is beautiful and the people are friendly. I am very grateful for the opportunity your scholar-ship has given me to attend Southwest. I am majoring in Automotive Service Technology. I love working on cars and learning about them. Southwest has an outstanding automotive program. My instructors, Martin Gambill and Dale Railston, are excellent teachers. Already they have both taught me so much, and I am not even halfway done yet! I have no doubt that I will be prepared to enter the workforce after gradua-tion. I simply cannot thank you enough for this wonderful opportunity. Sincerely,Phillip Wilson

Hers is a story that is all too familiar to so many mothers, sacrificing and working until it was her time. A mother of two, Jennifer Scott grew up poor in rural Tennessee, working at the tender age of 13. Although she was smart, college never even seemed to be a viable option. She found herself married at 19 and with her first child shortly thereafter. The marriage ended a short five years later, and Scott had two young children to care for. For the next 15 years she worked a series of menial jobs in factories or in food service. At 38, she woke up and decided it was time to change her life and return to school. Scott found, to her surprise, not only could she do it, she could do it well. Now she is majoring in office

administration (OFAD) with a concentration in medical administration. She wants to work in a hospital, but her dream is to run one.

Ask Scott about her return to college, and she’ll quickly tell you the journey has only been possible because of those who have helped pave the way. Among those who have made a difference in her life is Cecelia Jacob. “Ms. Jacob is always on point, always gives great feedback. She is just always there, anytime.” Scott also is also thankful for her advisor, Gayle Chambers. “She is so very kind and always on time.” She remembers English instructor Jerome Wilson as someone who changed her academic perceptions. “He allowed diverse views, and it broadened my horizons.” However, it is her scholarship sponsors, Follett Higher Education Group and the myriad of Book Scholarship sponsors, that Scott is so thankful for. “They gave me hope. I wanted my education so badly but without the dollars, you can’t do anything. They fanned the flame that keeps me burning.”

Scott says the scholarship changed her life in so many ways. “The scholarship made me believe Memphis was not only a good place but a great place. I want to tell others to give, because you don’t know whose life you’ll be touching. You’ll make someone’s hope a reality and enable students young and old want to make their community a

better place. Now, I want to help someone just like me when I graduate. It really does make a difference.”

Scott is glad she chose Southwest to return to school. “If you just try here, Southwest will help you succeed. They will do everything in their power to point you in the right direction or open a door.”

This mother of two is on her way to success. “Southwest is just a stepping stone. I’ve learned that hard work will be rewarded, and anything is possible.”

Jennifer Scott

In the autumn of 2012, I was awarded the Follett Non-Traditional Student Scholarship and a book scholarship at a time when I needed them the most. I am 41 years old, engaged to be married, with a full-time job and two adult children. I grew up in Ridgley, Tennessee with my divorced dad. We barely got by, and I grew up never believing I could go to college. By the time I was 23, I was divorced and living in Ohio with two children. When I look back, I now see where I could have made better decisions with my life.

By 2008, I was living in Memphis. I wanted a better life, but I realized that I did not have the skills necessary for the future. I made so little money in 2009 that federal aid paid for my tuition and books in the fall of 2010. In 2012, I had no money for my education at Southwest, but I had worked very hard on my studies and received “A” grades in all my courses. By God’s grace and my will to succeed, I was awarded money for tu ition and books. There is no way I could have afforded either on my own. Now, I have a GPA of 3.89, with only 18 credit hours to earn before I graduate with an AAS in Administration with Medical Concentration. My future looks bright because I will have an education to lean on!

Thanks so much to Southwest Tennessee Community College and all those who give to the scholarship program. May God bless you all!

Sincerely,

Jennifer L. Scott

Gloria Barnet is a passionate, dedicated early childhood provider who teaches in her home. When you meet Gloria, it is easy to see why she is a good early childhood teacher. She has a passion for helping children learn and has a gift for following a child’s interests and making learning opportunities from them. She delights in using every day experiences like thunderstorms and bumblebees to show children a new skill or a new joy. Our journey with Gloria began in 2003 when she took her first TECTA Orientation workshop.

In late 2007, Gloria talked with another child care provider who had earned her Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential with TECTA’s assistance. Their conversation helped Gloria realize that she wanted to take classes and earn her CDA, so she enrolled at Southwest and took the four courses TECTA sponsors to earn her CDA. For most people, earning the CDA would have taken 2 to 3 years. During this time, however, Gloria faced numerous hurdles. Her story is one of tenacity and self-exploration.

Following the completion of her college courses, Gloria attended several workshops designed to help her with the rest of the CDA documentation and application process. Each time, she got sidetracked with numerous life issues. Gloria also felt that she needed other people to help her write the required statements and document the work. She never felt comfortable with what people told her to write but she did not believe it could come from within herself.

During the summer of 2012, TECTA sent Gloria a letter stating that the CDA mentoring process was changing due to a reduction in TECTA funds and receipt of Women’s Foundation funds. Gloria was embarrassed to respond to the letter since she had started so many times, but this time felt different. She signed up for the cohort and Rosezella Wills was assigned as her mentor. Gloria stated that Ms. Wills’ patience and motivation and desire for continued communication kept her on track and helped her to not quit as she had before. As she had with previous efforts, Gloria continued to ask others what she

should write about to demonstrate her skill. Gloria stated, “Ms. Wills told me to write about what I do. She reminded me that every moment is a learning opportunity, like the time it was raining and the children started playing a drum to mimic the beat of the rain. There is so much to draw from in what I teach every day! Ms. Wills helped me realize I did not need other peoples’ words because I have so much to draw from. This is what I do every day; I do it well, and I feel great! I really had to take inventory of me. It (the process) didn’t work for me before because I was trying to say what others say, not what is in my heart that I know is good for children.”

During this time, Gloria faced not only her fears of not being able to earn the CDA; her grandson passed away, and she and her husband separated. In addition, in the last year, her daughter was placed on the kidney transplant list. She shared that this was not

Gloria Barnett

going to keep her down, and she would keep working with Rosezella’s help. She would pray, work with her daughter, write a competency statement, and keep on going!

When the time came for Gloria to be observed in her classroom and interviewed, she stated that she knew she was ready. She wasn’t trying to memorize information from a book or lecture; she knew she taught with developmentally-appropriate methods and could talk about it and demonstrate it. She stated, “I had confidence I would do great, and I DID!”

Gloria earned her CDA in February 2013. When she talked with me about finally receiving the credential, she stated, “I have always been in the background, but now I tell myself ‘Gloria, it is your time! You are on fire and will make a difference for children!’ Thank you to TECTA and the Women’s Foundation for putting Ms. Wills in my life so I could learn I had this in me and I just needed to let it out!”

Dear TECTA,

I want to express my gratitude to all who made it possible for me to attain my CDA this year. Over the last four years, I have attended three CDA workshops and one classroom observation. These experiences left me feeling confused and intimidated by large, unfriendly-looking classrooms and stacks of mandatory paperwork. I truly wanted my CDA, but it seemed as though the dream would remain unrealized. The staff of TECTA were always ready to answer my questions. In the midst of my confusion and doubt, TECTA kept the door open! I was too embarrassed by my experiences in the CDA workshops to call, but TECTA still sent me a letter about the 2012 CDA cohort.

I want to specif ically thanks Mrs. Rosezella Wills for her patience. Y ou gave me what I needed to achieve my goals through your support and your allowing me to offer my own ideas and creativity. Y ou helped me realize that I possessed the ability to achieve my goals. Y ou gave me the conf idence necessary to meet my observation date. I know that I am ready to master my goal of obtaining my CDA.

Sincerely,Gloria Barnett

College agrees with Rybi Travis. The native Memphian graduated from Northwest Prepatory Academy in 2010 and came to Southwest because she felt like it had a lot to offer. When she arrived, she was shy, withdrawn, and unsure of herself. Now, almost 20 years old, she is on her own and making her way with nursing school in her sights. She does work-study with the campus police, but it is nursing that fuels her passion. “I started taking care of my grandmother when I was 11, giving her insulin, doing what she needed. She inspired me to want to help others. I really want to help people.”

Travis lights up when you ask her who has helped her along the way. “Major Barbara Holmes talks to me when I have problems; she motivates me to do better.” Travis also praises her advisor, Rosie Taylor. “Ms. Taylor has just been there for me. She helps me with problems.” Travis knows nursing school is a long road. “I know I have a long way to go, but I’m doing well. I had a little trouble in Anatomy and Physiology, but Sabita Majumdar took special time outside of class to help me get through it.”

Travis believes Southwest has changed her life. “Southwest has been wonderful. The people always want to help you in every way they can, and that gets you farther in life.”

For Travis, the Florence Randall Memorial Endowed Scholarship means the difference between paying for everything and not. “I wish I could thank each and every one individually for funding this scholarship. It means a lot to me and makes such a difference to me. People have no idea what just books can mean. It makes my life better.”

Travis sums up her young life with a smile. “I’m doing well in my classes. Everything is coming together.”

When you’re the father of seven, you spend most of your time doing your best to take care of your family. That’s what Lindsey Beason has been doing for his children (who range in age from 15 to 25) for a long time, and he has often had to sit back and watch while others went to school. What Beason really wanted was a better way to take care of his family and set an example for his children to follow, so when the opportunity came along for him to finally go to college, he took it. In a short period of time, Beason has seen his whole life turn completely around. The former truck driver is now an aspiring accountant, doing an internship at the Army Corps of Engineers, where he is honing his skills. In the long term, Beason has his sights set on entrepreneurship and hopes to one day operate a small business accounting firm. If he can handle seven children, he can do anything!

Beason is not shy about his enthusiasm for Southwest. “Southwest has enriched my life academically and socially, because I’ve met faculty and instructors who teach because it’s their passion. That passion has trickled down to me, and now it’s my passion to be here.”

One of the instructors who Beason lauds is William Turner. “Turner taught me probability and statistics with this no-nonsense approach. He uses real-world applications, and I understand that.” Beason feels the same way about Mark Gardner, his economics instructor. “Mr. Gardner took economics and made it interesting. He used real-world applications as well, and that really resonates with me. I need to see how it fits in my world.” But it was a course in philosophy and ethics that Beason says changed his life forever. “Mr. Melvin Tuggle gave me a chance to see things outside of the world I grew up in. I now see things in a whole different perspective. I think that’s what college is about.”

Beason also feels that way about his scholarship. A Cigna Adult Learner Scholar, Beason says the scholarship helped him take care of necessities and allowed him to focus on what was really important. “The scholarship really helped me with my books. They are so expensive. I wasn’t sure how I was going to manage the costs, and so this was a blessing.”

Beason recruits for Southwest at every opportunity and is currently working on getting his brother to attend. “I don’t want to leave Southwest. Education is opportunity.”

Lindsey BeasonIn 1987, I graduated from high school and chose not to become a statistic of the difficult environment in which I was raised. Although I had aspirations of going to college, I didn’t have the financial means or the grades to make this dream a reality. At the age of 19, I entered the United States Air Force in order to provide financial support to my wife and child. I have always had to work hard to take care of my family, so my education was put on hold to do just that. By 2009, I had witnessed others succeed in their educational endeavors and thus concluded that I would at last do the same, realizing the dream I had since child-hood.

I had been driving trucks for more than 17 years, and I knew that if I wanted to advance out of the truck and into the office that education would be the key. I enrolled part-time at Southwest Tennessee Community College in 2011. During my first semester, the company that I worked for allowed me the flexibility I Needed to attend school; however, after the semester ended, I was informed that I would no longer be afforded that flexibility. I would have to either delay my edu-cational endeavors or resign from the company. I chose to resign, though I knew this decision would put a financial burden on my family. By the grace of God and through Southwest’s Career Services department, I was offered an intern-ship with the Army Corps of Engineers; though the pay was far less than I had previously made, it was enough to ensure that my educational success could be pursued.

Because of the furlough with the Department of Defense, my hours have been cut back and I am once more in financial distress. Thanks to the scholarship oppor-tunities you all have given me, I am now able to continue my education without having to find additional employment. The scholarships that I will be awarded will allow me to continue making the amount of money necessary to provide ba-sic family needs. The scholarship opportunity is what is making the difference towards successfully completing my degree. Whomever reads this letter, know that your donations really do make a difference! Know that I am working hard to maintain my grades in order to retain scholarship awards. Know that, for me and my family, your donations have had a significant impact on my educa-tional success, and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely,Lindsey Beason

At 46, she’s experiencing a long list of firsts: first time in school, first time overseas, first time on a plane. Laurie Baldwin is not used to being first at anything. She’s used to waiting her turn. She delayed school to raise her children and help her husband through school, trying on various careers along the way such as data processor and accounts payable... but nothing seemed to fit. Finally, her husband – her motivation to finish high school so long ago, something she was the only child in her family to accomplish – told her to go back to school. Baldwin decided nursing was the route she wanted, but once again fate intervened. She stopped again due to financial issues and the impending birth of her first grandchild. Now, she’s back in school with hopes of working in an emergency room or trauma setting.

Nursing school and its prerequisites can be difficult, and Baldwin acknowledges there were those who aided her along the way. “Mr. Saeid Baki-Hashemi taught me anatomy and physiology, and he has such a passion for teaching. Everyone is equal in his class, and learning there is so much fun.” Once Baldwin moved to nursing school, class became even more difficult. The right instructors became critical to her understanding the lessons. “Ms. Sharon Livisay in Adult Health really helped me learn how all the systems come together, and in the clinical setting she is just phenomenal. You learn things the right way. I really respect her.” However, it was Dr. Sam Macheri from the Memphis Mental Health Institute who has had the biggest impact on Baldwin. Doing clinicals in a mental health setting made Baldwin extremely uncomfortable. “Dr. Macheri puts himself where the patients are. He treats you like a co-worker. I was scared of the class, and he taught me that mental health illnesses were not something to be afraid of.”

Baldwin is grateful for everything that has happened to her, and especially grateful for the scholarship. “The William W. (Bill) and Jimmie W. Farris Endowed Scholarship has given me the freedom to be a student like any other student. I’ve gotten to focus, really focus on my education. It has allowed me opportunities I would have never had.”

Ask Baldwin what going back to school is like as a grandmother and she sighs with a smile. “It’s like being on an emotional roller coaster; there’s all these highs and lows. You just have to roll with it. This has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever accomplished, outside of my family. I feel like it’s all about ready to happen.”

Baldwin is about to do another first for her: she graduates in December. She credits Southwest for much of her success. “I’m so thankful to Southwest and their programs for allowing someone my age to do things like I’m 20. I feel like I’m getting a chance to do what I should have done years ago.”

Laurie Baldwin

Dear Farris family,

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Farris family for the scholarship that was awarded to me, allowing me to pursue my Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing. Receiving this scholarship has permitted me to focus my time on both my studies and my family. It has been such a blessing to not have to withhold money from the household budget in order to pay tuition and purchase textbooks. My family has made numerous sacrifices in support of my education; they believe in me and know how important it is to me. Because of the generosity of the Farris family, my family no longer has to make painful financial sacrifices. For this, I am truly appreciative to you and to all those involved with the scholarship program.

Sincerely,Laurie Baldwin
