Tuition & Fees for the 2019-20 School Year

Inspired by St. John Baptist de La Salle and informed by three centuries of faithful service by the Christian Brothers, St. Joe’s provides an unmatched opportunity for boys to be challenged intellectually, to grow spiritually, and to develop skills to be successful in college and careers.

The 2019-20 school year marks a new academic era for St. Joe’s. We enter our first year of transition away from the

New York State Regents program. The challenging, student-focused curriculum infused with innovative instructional techniques that already awaits each young man will only continue to get stronger. Our faculty is energized, translating to even more creativity and inspiration inside the classroom. At the same time, students will discover seemingly endless opportunities to get involved in life outside of the classroom.

All of this occurs in a community that becomes a true brotherhood – one in which a young man builds transformative relationships with both his peers and his teachers, allowing him to explore his interests and discover his strengths in a supportive and safe environment.

We hope this viewbook provides an introduction to our school community, and we encourage you to visit our modern campus to witness our community in action.

I look forward to meeting you.

– Christopher Fulco, Ed.D.President

We also play an instrumental role in helping a young man realize his unique potential while laying a solid moral and ethical foundation – preparing him for college and life.

Our Mission:St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute transforms the lives

of students from diverse backgrounds through academic excellence and care for the whole person

in a respectful, Lasallian Catholic community, developing each student’s unique talents

in preparation for college and life.

Building Gentlemen of IntegrityOn the first day of classes at St. Joe’s each year, students are reminded that St. Joe’s builds gentlemen of integrity. This demands respect for oneself, respect for others, and respect for the community. Within this community of respect, all members are valued, and the relationships we create with one another are sacred.

These ever-present ideals unite us as a spirited brotherhood. Instilled and developed throughout a student’s four years, it is this spirit that prepares our young men to enter into the world with character and confidence.

Present throughout their lives, this same spirit continues to serve as a guiding influence, bonding the men of St. Joe’s into a special brotherhood. Our alumni are forever connected to the St. Joe’s community – a Community of Excellence – strengthened by their support, friendship, and faith.

a community of respect.

Our Lasallian HeritageIn 1861, six Christian Brothers came to Buffalo on a mission to educate the young men of Western New York. Since those first days, St. Joe’s has provided an outstanding education in the Lasallian tradition.

Lasallian education has a rich heritage renowned worldwide. Lasallians operate the largest network of secondary schools in the world. Since 1680, educational institutions in more than 80 countries have been influenced by the vision and innovative spirit of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the Founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the patron saint of teachers. De La Salle transformed education by forming a community of educators with whom he developed a spirituality of teaching and learning, to give a human and Christian education to young people, especially the poor.

Lasallian education centers on Catholic values and personal relationships, emphasizing academic excellence, faith formation, inclusion, respect for the individual, service, and social justice. A Lasallian Education strives to enrich each student’s cultural, intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual development.

Today, the De La Salle Christian Brothers and their Lasallian Partners continue to respond to students through advancements in teaching, technology, and scholarship. In Lasallian communities, educators touch hearts, stimulate minds, and cultivate leadership to prepare students for life, work, and service to society and the Church.

Innovative CurriculumSt. Joe’s is deeply committed to preparing young men for college and beyond. Courses are designed to teach students to think critically while working creatively and collaboratively. Through a highly personalized approach, our goal is to help each and every student achieve his personal best – regardless of the level at which he comes to us.

The 2019-20 school year marks the beginning of our transition away from the New York State Regents program, leading to greater freedom for our teachers to be even more innovative in the classroom. We are introducing new courses in many subject areas and diversifying the ways in which we will assess our students’ performance, aligning with strategies currently used in colleges and universities.

To support the exciting new course opportunities and teaching methods, all freshmen will receive a Dell 2-in-1 laptop designed for education through our 1:1 device program. This powerful tool will be equipped with the platforms and operating systems students will utilize in both college and professional settings. Beginning in fall 2019, all freshmen will take a new one-semester course: Topics in Computer Science. Course topics will include office productivity software, programming/coding, computer hardware, internet safety, digital citizenship, and internet research.

Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level courses are offered in every academic area, providing the opportunity for many of our students to earn college credits. Even students not following an advanced track of study often identify one or more areas of strength and interest and enroll in the corresponding AP course.

Committed FacultyPassionate and dedicated faculty are the driving force behind our academic success. True to our Lasallian mission, our faculty and staff serve as passionate mentors – always available, approachable, and committed – and provide the individualized support required for the development of each young man.

Included in this group are more than 60 alumni who returned to St. Joe’s to serve our community as teachers, staff members, coaches, and administrators, connecting us in a very personal way to our traditions.

Career Exploration ProgramWith the assistance of our extensive and engaged alumni network, our Career Exploration Program provides incredible opportunities for students to better identify college majors and develop career aspirations through a combination of valuable experiences.

Throughout the year, career-related skill-building workshops are held, extending the work done in the classroom to provide practical knowledge that prepares our young men for college and career. New this year: networking events, attended by alumni, designed to open doors for our students while increasing their confidence in professional social settings.

All of this sets up our students for success in our Internship Program, matching young men from all grade levels with opportunities across all career fields throughout Western New York – and even outside our region.

“At St. Joe’s, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a dedicated faculty to guide students as they develop into confident and caring adults. Our alumni are successful, and evidence of that success is abundant. But the real success of St. Joe’s is friendship. Yes, as a faculty we engage and instruct, but we also befriend our students. It’s that friendship that makes St. Joe’s much more than a school; St. Joe’s is home. St. Joe’s is family.”

College Search ProcessAt. St. Joe's, career and college exploration starts early. Our experienced counselors work closely with students and families, beginning freshman year, to discover institutions of higher education that match their academic interests, provide the right fit for each student, and make good financial sense for each family. While this work is done by the entire counseling team, our Director of College Counseling is solely focused on assisting students and families through this important process.

Students work with counselors to create an online personalized plan using Naviance, a college and career readiness tool. The self-assessments and research available through the platform can help young students discover potential college majors that match their interests and skills while building a digital portfolio and course plan.

Test PrepHigher SAT and ACT scores increase the likelihood of college acceptance and scholarships. At St. Joe’s, prep courses are offered on campus, ensuring that all students have access to learn the skills and strategies required to elevate results on the national tests.

My sole mission is to equip our young men with all of the information and tools they need to make the college choice that is right academically, socially, and financially.”

College Placement At St. Joe’s, we are proud of our commitment to partner with each student to select the institution of higher learning that matches his personal needs and career goals. The selection process begins freshman year as we walk through the application steps, explore tuition financing options, and outline strategies for the four years of high school to build an impressive college resume.

Workshops for both students and parents are held regularly on campus, featuring higher education professionals who discuss college applications and essays, financial aid, and the NCAA recruitment process. In addition, alumni eagerly come back to campus to share their experience building their own career paths with students, enhancing our career exploration initiatives.

The hard work pays off. The combination of academic excellence, faculty mentorship, and expert counseling results in college acceptances into some of the nation’s premier institutions of higher learning, including the excellent colleges and universities in Western New York, and most students receive scholarships.

Enter to Learn. Leave to Serve.Service to others is a core principle of the worldwide Lasallian mission. At St. Joe’s, students are offered significant opportunities to respond to needs both locally and globally.

Lasallian Youth GroupThe Lasallian Youth Group travels weekly to local inner city sites to serve as outreach to the poor and marginalized. Students work behind the scenes to provide sustenance and dignity for those in need.

Christian Ministry ProjectAll St. Joe’s students complete an annual service project of their own design with a local agency providing support to the economically poor, the elderly or infirm, the developmentally disabled, or to a religious education program. Each student completes a minimum of 20 hours of service per year. During the 2018-19 school year, St. Joe’s students completed over 18,000 hours of service to the community.

Lasallians in ActionEach summer, a group of students and faculty members spend one week living in community on the St. Joe’s campus – sleeping, praying, and sharing meals together. Each day, the group goes out into the community to serve organizations throughout the Western New York community.

Faith Service CommunityAn outgrowth of our Lasallian heritage, Faith Service Community (FSC) is a formalized service learning society with a mission to touch the hearts and transform the minds of our students through a combination of faith, service, and education.

Working as volunteers locally and out-of-state in poverty-stricken areas, FSC members have a deeper understanding of the issues impacting the communities in which the students are immersed through participation in monthly meetings and an online learning community where discussions take place centered around topics such as the dynamics and realities of poverty, the truth behind stereotypes, and how Gospel values can guide a student’s everyday life.

Cultural Immersion Service ExperiencesEach year, students have the opportunity to travel out of our region to experience the challenges that accompany poverty in both rural and urban communities. In 2019, students and faculty traveled to Bethlehem Farm, WV – a Catholic community in Appalachia – and the Romero Center in Camden, NJ. The young men focus on service, prayer, and community while conducting home repair projects, farming, volunteering at homeless shelters, and more. Students leave the service-learning experiences rooted in the Catholic faith tradition, with a heightened awareness of their role in helping others in need.

acclaimed fine arts.

Inspired by the ArtsSt. Joe’s boasts the most comprehensive Visual and Performing Arts program for boys in Western New York, and all are welcome to participate – no matter what their skill level. From course-offerings to extracurricular opportunities, students will be inspired to discover their often hidden talents.

Visual ArtsFrom Art & Architecture to Digital Video Arts, students explore different media and techniques with the various course offerings in the visual arts. A large studio space and state-of-the-art digital graphics lab provide the right tools for inspiration. Advanced students have the option to enroll in three unique AP courses to earn college credit while building their portfolio.

Vocal MusicThrough a sequence of courses progressing from Freshmen Singers to Glee Club to Varsity Singers, the program welcomes all skill levels. The courses focus on technique and music theory, and ensembles perform at school liturgies and concerts throughout the year. In addition, the co-ed Swing Choir is popular with talented vocalists and musicians interested in sharing ministry through music.

Instrumental MusicThe program provides an opportunity for students with no previous experience to learn an instrument in credit-bearing courses for percussion, brass, and woodwind – eventually joining the more experienced musicians in the Concert Band, Strings Ensemble, and Jazz Lab Band. The focus is on both excellent performance technique and music theory.

Theater ArtsA mix of electives and workshops offer a multitude of performance and public speaking opportunities in our safe and supportive environment. The highlight of the program includes the annual Fall Drama and Spring Musical, where audiences are amazed and delighted by the talent, sets, lighting, and costumes.

Artists in Residence Throughout the year, professional artists – including many prominent St. Joe’s alumni – devote countless hours to sharing their knowledge and experiences with our students inside and outside of the classroom. You can find the impressive list of professionals at sjci.com/arts.

For decades, the Marauders have been a dominant force in Western New York high school sports, using our teams as another opportunity to foster brotherhood, build character, and teach hard work.

The athletic program today offers 18 sports with 41 teams, providing lots of opportunity for young men interested in athletics. During the 2018-19 school year, a total of 563 students wore a Marauder jersey!

The St. Joe’s legacy of athletic success wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated coaching staff, many of whom have long tenures leading the Marauders – and close to 50 are St. Joe’s alumni. In addition to the talented staff and faculty who commit to leading teams and entire programs, many of our coaches are sacrificing time away from their families and professional careers to share their talents and love of the sport with our student-athletes.

Stronger and Healthier Student-AthletesThrough a partnership with Excelsior Orthopedics and a dedicated strength and conditioning coach on our staff, our young men participate in an educational and competitive training program conducted right on our campus. The student-athletes learn proper form and technique to get stronger and reduce injuries through sport-specific training, nutritional evaluation, speed and agility training, and more.

Educating the Whole PersonIn the Lasallian tradition of educating the whole person, we encourage students to participate in the many outstanding extracurricular clubs and activities offered at St. Joe’s. Part of what makes the school such a special place is that students feel comfortable trying new things and developing their talents in a safe environment.

In addition to the fine arts and athletic offerings, students will find a long list of activities and clubs to join. The St. Joe’s Student Council also sponsors dances throughout the school year open to St. Joe’s boys and young women from local high schools, including date dances for all grade levels and proms for juniors and seniors.

Robotics and InnovationSt. Joe’s is proud to be a participating school in the FIRST Robotics Competition, and we are the only Catholic high school in WNY currently participating in the program. Comprised of faculty members, adult mentors, and students, the team has six weeks to design, build, and program a robot to engage in competition against other schools in the region.

With the addition of the St. Joe’s Innovation Center in 2016, the team has more room to build the robot and construct a practice field according to the competition’s specifications.

Students of all skill levels are welcome and elevate their skills in programming, electronics, mechanical engineering, publicity, communication, and more. The result? Even more of our graduates continue their studies in STEM-related fields in college.

Through continuous investment, our 12-acre, 21st century campus offers students the opportunity to learn, collaborate, perform, and compete in one location.

Yes, our campus is impressive. But St. Joe’s is more than just buildings: It is our students who give it life, color, vibrancy, and purpose. St. Joe’s becomes a “home-away-from-home” for students – a place to study, complete projects, meet new friends, attend dances and assemblies, pray, and sometimes just hang out.

the St. Joe’s investment.A St. Joe’s education is an investment guaranteed to pay dividends. 100% of our graduates are accepted to four-year colleges and universities, including the top universities in the nation. Collectively, our graduates earned over $30 million in scholarships and merit-based awards in 2019.

The St. Joe’s brotherhood, a tangible force cultivated for nearly 160 years, awaits each graduate. Through our extensive network, doors are opened for St. Joe’s graduates all over the country – with alumni offering professional guidance, premier internships, and eventual job opportunities. This same brotherhood demands that a St. Joe’s education is accessible to boys from all socio-economic backgrounds through expansive tuition assistance. And our Lasallian mission commits us to extending the St. Joe’s experience to all who qualify academically.

Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and benefactors, St. Joe’s enjoys a growing endowment. During the 2019-20 school year, St. Joe’s will allocate $3 million in tuition support, impacting approximately 80% of our students.

Academic ScholarshipsSt. Joe’s offers academic scholarship awards to qualified incoming freshmen who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and potential. Financial need is not a factor in determining scholarship eligibility.

Of primary consideration in selecting a student to receive an academic scholarship is his score on the Scholarship and Entrance Examination given prior to his acceptance into St. Joe’s. Additional criteria in determining such awards include a review of the student’s transcript from grades 6, 7, and 8. Scholarship awards are renewed automatically each school year provided that school work consistently demonstrates a superior level of achievement.

Tuition Assistance ProgramFinancial assistance is available to parents experiencing severe difficulty in meeting the cost of tuition.

Tuition grants which result in a direct reduction of tuition expenses vary in size and are awarded to families based on financial need.

Families may apply for Financial Aid the year prior to attendance. If the family qualifies for aid, notice will be sent at the same time an acceptance packet is mailed to the student, allowing a family a full financial picture at time of acceptance.

Supplementary Work ProgramSt. Joe’s sponsors a work program designed to assist students who would like to reduce the cost of tuition by working at St. Joe’s.

While the program is not need-based and is open to all students, it is normal for a financial aid award to include both a direct grant and an amount to be earned through the work program. Students earn tuition credits by working before and after school and during holidays, weekends, and vacations. The entry level rate is $8.50/hour and may increase each year the student participates in the program.

It is reasonable for boys to work as many as 200 hours over 12 months ( July-June) without sacrificing their school work, extra-curriculars, or family responsibility.
