Jazz – the Cultural Passport

We like pianist Danilo Perez’s notion that jazz is a cultural passport to the world. It evokes a sense that jazz – like art itself - is a shared language that allows people to cross boundaries, connect with others and break down barriers. Jazz has always been one of America’s greatest cultural exports, and now jazz is a prized import too, as hybrid, re-imagined sounds from across the world come back to us, shaped by distant continents and cultures, and influenced by the freedom of expression that jazz affords. That’s why we’re excited by the explosion of Latin jazz taking root in Massachusetts, with artists like Perez making their home here, and students like Samuel Batista and Esther Rojas choosing Berklee to sharpen their musical skills. The new Copa Airlines service between

Boston and Panama City, which started in July, will deepen the cultural and travel ties that bind us across the American hemisphere. Jazz has always had a wide berth in Massachusetts, and so it’s not surprising that three theater groups – the Shakespeare Commonwealth Company, ArtsEmerson and the Huntington Theater have incorporated jazz into their productions. Or that NEC jazz master Ran Blake is hosting the 9th annual Film Noir concert in November, since jazz has played a central party in the Hollywood film industry.

Massachusetts – It’s All Here

In a broad sense, 2013 may go down as the year the performing arts scene in Massachusetts took a giant step into the limelight. This summer, Boston’s inaugural Outside the Box festival presented 230 live performances, ranging from jazz and ballet to Shakespeare and spectacle art on Boston Common and City Hall Plaza. A week later the Summer Arts Weekend at Copley Plaza had crowds cheering to the

Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans, Angélique Kidjo from Benin, West Africa and a mix of artists to satiate everyone’s tastes. Add these festivals to dozens more taking place across the state this summer and fall – jazz and blues, classical and modern dance, ethnic and folk, and rock and country - and you begin to appreciate Massachusetts’ growing reputation as a performance arts destination. A look through MassVacation.com, operated by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism, reveals hundreds of high caliber performing arts events across the Commonwealth taking place every day of the year. It makes for a vibrant cultural scene that appeals to the people who live here and to those who come on business, as tourists and as students. If you want to find out for yourself, bring your cultural passport and join us this summer and fall. We think you’ll agree that our cultural amenities underscore the state’s motto, Massachusetts - It’s All Here.

Massachusetts: The State of Jazz

Welcome to the 5th annual issue of MassJazz, a birds-eye view of jazz activities across Massachusetts in the summer and fall of 2013. When we launched MassJazz in 2009, we noted the pervasive roots of jazz in Massachusetts and the central role our state has played in the development of jazz as America’s most original art form. Our enthusiasm has only increased these past five years, as Massachusetts continues to foster the highest level of jazz performance, education and composition. For top touring artists, the Bay State is a must-stop on their performance circuits. In the coming months we’re excited to welcome jazz masters like Herbie Hancock, Kurt Elling, Vijay Iyer and Wayne Shorter, along with rising stars Esperanza Spalding, Grace Kelly, Christian Scott and Roberta Gambarini. Massachusetts has an educated and appreciative jazz audience that supports guest artists as well as local ones. We salute the intrepid jazz organizers who put together our

summer/fall festivals, concert series, and assorted activities that keep musicians working and audiences happy. Our universities and our cultural and visitor amenities also deserve praise for their role in promoting jazz. At Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory and UMass/Amherst, students from around the world make a pilgrimage each school year to study with our master practitioners and teachers. And schools like Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Boston University have exceptional jazz ensembles, some of which date back more than half a century. In this context, it makes sense that this year’s Berklee BeanTown Festival in September focuses on the next generation of jazz, since that is where new ideas and musical expression get started. Likewise, the New England Conservatory’s series of jazz concerts this fall features the fine student orchestras and ensembles that flourish there. Night clubs and concert halls are natural venues for great jazz, and we have hundreds of these

Live theater is being set to live jazz in three Boston productions this summer and fall. Shakespeare Commonwealth Company’s production of Two Gentlemen of Verona, which plays on Boston Common through July 28, is set not in Milan, Italy, but rather in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Rat-pack-inspired version, staged for free at the Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common, features a five piece jazz band comprised of students from New England Conservatory, led by music director Colin Thurmund, a guitarist/ composer and NEC candidate for a doctorate in music.Director Steven Maler says “the play transformed into a musical” because of the NEC collaboration. “The production features a jazz band integrated into the narrative, performing standards inspired by the era, including I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Fever, and Witchcraft,” Maler says, adding that the actors also “sing and play along with the band.” The NEC musicians for Two Gentlemen of Verona include Colin

Thurmond as Music Director, Evan Allen (’13) on piano, Henry Fraser (’14) on Bass (Sub: Dorsey Bass ‘13), Nick Neuburg (’14) on Drums (Sub: Ethan Parcell), and Jake Novak on Trombone. Speaking of the bard, ArtsEmerson presented The Shakespearean Jazz Show at the Paramount Center main stage in Boston on July 18, after it had debuted at the New Orleans Shakespeare Festival in Tulane, then in Boston at ArtsEmerson’s The Next Thing Festival (TNT) in February. The July performance was a well-deserved encore for this inventive production. The show was conceived of and created in Boston by two Emerson College students, Alex Ates and Patrick Greeley, who wanted to present Shakespeare in a new and innovative way. They collaborated with students from Berklee College of Music, creating a medley of sonnets, songs and scenes set in a New Orleans jazz hall. “It turns out the rhythm of jazz fully supports the rhythm of Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter,”

writes Greeley, the musical director. “Each line of a sonnet, for example, fits comfortably within two measures of music, and the sonnet’s built-in rhyme scheme is a match for the song form.” Finally, the Huntington Theatre Company is presenting a new musical called The Jungle Book, based on the Disney animated film, at the BU Theatre, from September 7 through October 6, 2013. Mary Zimmerman, Tony Award winner for Metamorphoses, adapted The Jungle Book for stage and is also the director. The play draws from Disney and also from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, a collection of children’s stories set in the jungles of India. Zimmerman decided to use meld American jazz with Indian music to create a unique sound that captures the era. “I spent five days with twelve musicians,” she says. “Six were great Chicago horn players and percussion and woodwinds, and six were people adept on various Indian instruments.

Two Gentlemen of Verona The Shakespeare Commonwealth Company

Shalin Liu Performance Center

“It’s a very quirky decision to make the musical idiom of the Indian jungle American swing and jazz, and yet I felt that the music had something in common with what I liked in Indian dance music,” she says. “We did versions of these (Disney) songs - King of the Swingers, Bare Necessities, My

Own Home, Trust in Me – that were completely recognizable, but the instrumentation has this gorgeous Indian drive to it. So they’re kind of hybrid versions.” Huntington’s marketing manager Adam Roberts says that several local musicians are performing in The Jungle Book, including Walt Bostnian, Trombone/Bass Trombone/

Tuba/Snake Trumpet; Mark Pinto, Woodwinds; Mike Ambrozewski, Drums; and Tony D’Amico, Bass.

Jazz A Cultural Passport to the World

Terminal E at Boston’s Logan International Airport was abuzz on Thursday morning, July 11, as travelers prepared to board the first Copa Airlines flight from Boston to Panama City in Panama, Central America. The new nonstop service connects New England with Central and South America, and opens up a new era of travel, business and cultural exchange for these two parts of the Americas. To celebrate the new service, airport and airline officials, tourism leaders and the state’s Hispanic community gathered at Gate Four of the international terminal to give the first flight a worthy send-off. José Massó, Massport’s Director of Community Relations and legendary radio host of Con Salsa on WBUR-FM, welcomed the guests in English and Spanish. Musicians and dancers performed Panamanian songs and officials wished the passengers a buen viaje. Among the dignitaries was Danilo Perez, one of the world’s most

respected jazz musicians and humanitarians, a native Panamanian living in the Boston area. In one sense, the new Copa Airlines service builds upon Perez’s life-long work to forge cultural, travel, musical and educational connections throughout the Americas, and indeed, throughout the world. A Grammy Award winner and frequent award nominee, Perez has been a formidable presence on the international jazz scene since he was invited to play with Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Band in 1989 while still a student at the Berklee College of Music. Since then he has cultivated a distinct Pan-American jazz sound, which combines his mastery of jazz and classical music with the music of the Americas and world music. In 2003, Perez and his wife Patricia founded the Panama Jazz Festival, bringing to his native land some of the world’s top jazz musicians while also exposing visitors to Central America’s rich indigenous music and dance.

Perez has said that jazz is a cultural passport which enables musicians to connect with societies and cultures around the globe. With that accessibility, he believes, comes an obligation to use the power of music as a tool for the betterment of society. That is why Perez was the perfect choice in 2010 to become the first artistic director of the newly formed Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI). For in addition to being an accomplished and respected musician, Perez was an educator who recognized the connectivity between creativity, music, and social change. The thirteen students selected for the Institute are mentored by jazz masters like Terri Lyne Carrington, Joe Lovano and David Gilmore. They regularly perform at festivals around the world, including Panama, Puerto Rico and Toronto. They also give back to the Boston community performing at schools, hospitals and nursing homes and teaching music to inner city children. Perez’s artistic vision is to teach these students a lesson his own father taught him, that music has the power to change lives. “Once my students understand the power of music, passion creeps in. The passion to survive, to fight for happiness,” Perez says. “A lot of my students have gone on to have great careers. The really successful ones have learned their mission in life; they see their music as a fingerprint of their lives. Once they figure out that life comes first, nothing can stop them.” “Danilo has an intense creativity and an almost superhuman reservoir

In addition to the jazz connection, Massachusetts officials are excited about the travel possibilities, since Copa’s Panama City hub connects to fifty-five other destinations in Latin America. “Nonstop service to Latin America will open up new opportunities to allow Massachusetts businesses to compete in the 21st century global marketplace,” said Governor Deval Patrick. “The service will increase tourism here at home and connect our residents with friends and family in Latin America.” The 5 ½ hour flight departs Logan Airport each day at 9:54 a.m. and arrives at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City at 2:28 p.m. From the other end, the flight leaves Panama City each day at 11:46 a.m. and arrives in Boston at 6:16 p.m.

of energy, but even more humbling and inspiring is how he invests those qualities fully toward the service of others,” says BGJI student and jazz pianist Christian Li. For the local jazz community, the fact that Perez has put down roots in Massachusetts is significant. “Danilo is a cultural hero on such an international scale – as a musician, educator, and social entrepreneur that it’s easy to overlook one of his greatest contributions to Boston’s jazz scene: He lives here,” says Pauline Bilsky, founder of JazzBoston. “And he’s proud of it. Danilo is outspoken in his belief, which we share, that Boston is one of the world’s great jazz cities, and he’s proven that a jazz musician can play a prominent role on the world stage while being Boston-based,” Bilsky says. “All of us who care about the

future of jazz in Boston owe him muchas gracias.” Perez’s vision continues to extend beyond Boston and Panama. In 2012 Perez was named UNESCO Artist for Peace, allowing him to bring his humanitarian message to new places. Last February, Perez and Italian saxophonist Marco Pignataro, managing director of BGJI, took a group of students to Benin and Togo in West Africa, where they taught and performed music. The African trip gave the students a first-hand look at how global issues like poverty, education and environmental protection affect millions of people around the world. And it inspired them to use their musical talents to somehow make a difference, like their mentor, Danilo Perez.

Massachusetts - The State of JazzBerklee Jazz Fest The Next Generation

Often described as Boston’s biggest block party, the 13th annual Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival is a gathering spot for returning students, neighbors, tourists and jazz lovers to congregate on a beautiful fall day. It is also a chance to enjoy the city’s incredible jazz scene, drawing musicians from all over the world. Berklee BeanTown takes place this year on Saturday, September 28, from noon to 6:00 p.m. in Boston’s South End. The theme of this year’s festival is Jazz: The Next Generation, a generous nod to some of the most acclaimed and up-and-coming Berklee alumni who are changing the sound of jazz throughout the music industry.

Among the performers are Grammy nominated trumpeter Christian Scott, the Mike Tucker Trio featuring vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and the Matt Savage Quartet featuring Bobby Watson. Other stars include bassist and singer/songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello and R&B singer Robin McKelle. Faculty and students also play a big role in this year’s festival, so keep an ear out for faculty members Lawrence “Larry” Watson, Karen Bell, Matt Jenson, Rick DiMuzio, and the Berklee Global Jazz Ambasadors featuring Adam Cruz. “Mentoring has always been an important part of the continuance and advancement of jazz, so we are proud to recognize some mentor-

mentee relationships with this year’s festival,” says jazz drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, artistic director of the festival. The free festival also features dozens of jazz groups, artisans and food purveyors who bring out the best that Boston has to offer. As part of the festivities, Berklee has also scheduled some ticketed concerts that weekend, including the Gary Burton 70th Birthday Tour, stopping at Scullers Jazz Club on Friday and Saturday, September 27-28, and Snarky Puppy, the acclaimed instrumental jazz, funk and world music ensemble, on stage at the Berklee Performance Center on Sunday, September 29.beantownjazz.org

Christian Scott

Matt Jensen & Liquid Revolution Band Saxophonist Samuel Batista is a Presidential Scholar at Berklee College of Music and a native of San Miguelito, Panama City, Panama. He talked with MassJazz recently about his musical journey.

What is the Presidential Scholar Award and how did you win it?

My first time in Boston was in September 2009 for Berklee’s five-week Summer Performance Program. After that, my dream of being a Berklee student became stronger and moved me to audition three more times, all of them at the

Panama Jazz Festival. In my third audition I had the opportunity to win the presidential scholarship.

The presidential scholarship is an honor and responsibility that allows talented and deserving students who don’t have enough resources to achieve the best musical education. It came to me during my second semester as a student at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico. I began my first semester at Berklee in September 2012.

Talk about your work with Danilo Perez as a teacher, fellow Panamanian and world figure in jazz.

Danilo Perez has become an example of life for me. His perseverance, patience, creativity, joyfulness and generosity constantly pass through my mind, and change me a little bit, every day more and more. And, I can certainly say that almost every Panamanian feels the same way, and if not, they should.

Tell us about jazz in Panama.

Panama has a beautiful musical culture with great influences from Africa, Spain and other places around the world that offers a powerful way of self- expression and freedom. For me that’s where jazz comes from, from freedom.

The opportunities to learn music in Panama have been increasing rapidly since Danilo began to work and open doors to Panamanian students with a desire of learning music and becoming better persons. After graduating from the most representative jazz schools in the world, (these students continue) working and teaching in Panamanian schools and foundations.

Musically and culturally, how does Boston inspire you?

Boston is a place of musical diversity. Its beauty consists of languages, traditions, and amazing people from all over the world who bring a little bit of their countries through their eyes. Music is a combination of feelings, languages and traditions…a little bit of everything! That’s what makes Boston a beautiful musical city for me, its diversity. My biggest inspiration is that I’m not alone, and that there are more people seeking the opportunity I have.

MIT Celebrates 50 Years of Jazz

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge is celebrating a half century of jazz in 2013. The school’s jazz program was launched in 1963, when Klaus Liepmann, MIT’s first director of music, hired jazz legend Herb Pomeroy to lead MIT’s student jazz band. In April, MIT hosted a weekend of concerts, workshops and exhibits on campus, with a gala concert at Kresge Auditorium featuring the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Frederick Harris, Jr., with special guest, pianist Steve Kuhn. A highlight of the evening was the world premiere of Chick Corea’s composition, From Forever (Suite for Big Band), Dedicated to Herb Pomeroy. It turns out that Corea has enduring connections to both MIT and Pomeroy. “Some of Chick’s earliest arrangements were created for a sextet he formed with MIT

students,” Harris said. “They even rehearsed at an MIT dorm.” And Pomeroy himself gave Chick his first gig at the Stables Club in Boston. “Herb was one of the first elders I really looked up to….he set a very good example for me,” Corea said. The concert itself was outstanding, said Carmen Fields, music enthusiast and daughter of big band leader the late Ernie Fields. “It was a thrilling evening, full of outstanding student and faculty

performances…(they) did the jazz legacy and the founder-teacher Herb Pomeroy proud!” In April, MIT unveiled an exhibit of portions of the Herb Pomeroy Jazz Collection at the Lewis Music Library on campus, with materials donated by Pomeroy’s family. Items include personal papers, a music library comprised of over 500 compositions, teaching materials and numerous recordings. Students themselves are delighted to discover MIT’s jazz program, says Mark Harvey, who has taught jazz studies for over three decades. “Probably no one comes to MIT thinking they’re going to study jazz, but when they get here they realize the opportunities,” he says. Harvey brings his class to rehearsals and concerts of the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, which he founded forty years ago, to give them a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how professional bands operate. Is it unusual for a school like MIT - known for its excellence in math, science and engineering – to have a world class jazz program? Harris sees no incongruity. “MIT’s motto is ‘Mind and Hand.’ Creation, invention, innovation are the norm,” Harris says. “In music, the idea of creating – especially in jazz – is a similar mind-set. These students do a lot of problem solving on micro-levels, and music is not that far different.”

Massachusetts - The State of Jazz

The main lobby at the top of the escalator of the Liberty Hotel in downtown Boston seems like an unusual place to hear jazz, but that’s where the Daniel Bennett Group performs every Wednesday night. Turns out it’s the perfect spot for the jazz trio. “Several restaurants and hallways converge in the lobby and spit customers right into the live music area,” says saxophonist Bennett. “There are couches and tables everywhere; it’s the perfect vibe for live music.” Jazz musicians who ply their trade nightly hope for the best when it comes to venues, and hotels may be one of the best gigs to get if the mixture of audience, ambiance and acoustics are just right. “The acoustics in the Liberty are surprisingly good,” Bennett says, adding that the hotel was formerly the Charles Street Jail. “When they converted the space into a four diamond hotel, they left open space and huge ceiling intact. The sound reverberates really nicely. At the same time, the “liveness” of the room is nicely tempered by the carpeted floors.” Just down the street at the Fairmont Battery Wharf Hotel, jazz singer Peter Smith notes that where the band sets up makes all the difference.

Hotel Jazz All About Ambiance & Audience

“We were in our third different place in the room before we found the perfect spot,” he says about the Battery Lounge in the hotel. “We’ve got a nice situation with couches, perfect for our demographics, thirty and above. They want to be comfortable when the lights come down. It’s a little more expensive, but you get that wonderful ambiance.”“Most places will carve out a space where people can listen and those who really want to talk can do so away from the band,” says jazz drummer Bart Weisman, who performs regularly with his trio at the Cape Codder Hotel & Resort in Hyannis. “But, if they really dig the music, they will stop and listen too.” And indeed, the make-up of the audience matters as much as perfect ambiance and acoustic quality. “More often than not, audiences at Battery Wharf are engaged, likely because of the vocal work,” say Smith, who specializes in the American Songbook and tunes by Sinatra, Bennett, Martin and Cole. “If I happen upon a couple who has an anniversary, or request tunes, that gets them to engage with the music.” Bennett, who has been at the Liberty Hotel for five years, says the hotel’s patrons are “very respectful.

They often buy our CDs and introduce themselves before or after each performance.” Musicians say that most hotel audiences are comprised of people staying at the hotel, locals who follow the jazz scene and tourists who are passing by and stop in for a drink. Even if an audience is not attuned to jazz per se, if helps if it is receptive to live music. “I find my Smooth Jazz Group is a good intro for those people who say they don’t like jazz,” says Weisman, who performs in tourism-friendly Cape Cod. “But by the end of the night they really like what we are doing and are now more open to exploring jazz standards.” Smith can switch over from Sinatra and Bennett to Elvis Presley and Bobby Darin, depending on the crowd, but most people are familiar with Frank and Tony. “The audience really just wants to hear good music,” says Bennett. “We play mostly original music with elements of American folk music and jazz blended together. It’s a broad spectrum of sound that anyone can relate to in some way shape or form. They don’t have to be hardcore jazz lovers. We love that!”massjazz.com/hotels/Libertyhotel.comFairmont.com/BatteryWharfCapecodderresort.com

Massachusetts - The State of JazzHarvard Covers the Jazz Spectrum

Where do you find the best jazz radio coverage in Boston? The folks at Harvard answered that question back in the 1950s, and their answer may still hold true today.A story in the Harvard Crimson on March 23, 1957, boasted, “WHRB is proud to offer the best radio jazz coverage in Boston. Whether you like to pound your food to Dixieland or enjoy the modern sounds, you’ll find a program to please your tastes among our weekend jazz features.”As Boston’s network of jazz radio programs continues to diminish to the onslaught of talk radio, and as nationally-syndicated shows replace local jazz programs, Harvard’s WHRB, located at 389 Harvard Street in Cambridge, may indeed provide the most pervasive jazz coverage in Boston. Radio hosts Eric Jackson at WGBH and Glenn Siegel at WMUA at UMass/Amherst are respected

elders of jazz radio, and WICN in Worcester has terrific jazz programming. But in greater Boston, WHRB’s Jazz Spectrum stands alone in offering 40 hours of original programming, five days a week, year after year.Harvard Student Nikhil Mehra, head of Jazz Spectrum, is one of the twenty students who spin the vinyl 40 hours a week; he estimates they have over 5,000 records in the archives. His pride in being part of Harvard’s longstanding jazz tradition has a family dimension too; his mother was a volunteer classical host when she was a student here.A trumpet player in Harvard’s excellent jazz band, Mehra grew up learning classical music, and when he was a high school freshman a teacher introduced him to jazz. As a musician, he tries to emulate horn players like Clifford Brown and Freddy Hubbard. As a radio host, he shares his love of jazz to the dedicated audience of listeners who follow the show.Speaking of listening audiences, Mehra is aware of radio being eclipsed by other technologies and platforms. Jazz Spectrum, he says, “is fighting everyone moving to the Internet; students no longer have radios in their rooms.” He says the bulk of listeners are Bostonians making their daily commute into work, plus the core of loyal music

lovers who support jazz on the radio. Many jazz legends have visited the studio over the decades, including Lionel Hampton, Count Basie and Stan Kenton. In the early years, the shows reflected the times, with names like Steamboat Jazz, Cool and Quiet Jazz, Accent on Jazz, and Jazz Workshop. In 1940, when WHRB was part of the Crimson Radio Network, Jazz Lab was the popular program, “treating the developments of types of jazz from its beginnings to modern swing.”A popular component of Harvard’s radio programming is the music orgy in both classical and jazz, which takes place during exam periods. The Eric Dolphy Orgy, the John Coltrane Orgy, and the more recent Blue Note Orgy are part of a tradition that goes back to 1944, when the station “conducted a Jazz Orgy of popular jam numbers…from Wednesday night at eight o’clock until last night at eight o’clock.”A Math major at Harvard, Mehra is asked whether there are similarities between math and jazz, and he answers, “They both engage the creative and quantitative sides of your brain. While all music engages aesthetically, jazz is interesting, you have to be thinking in time, chords and harmony, but like math at a high level, you have to create.”

Boston’s Jazz HeroArni Cheatham, Boston’s quietly passionate saxophonist, educator and photographer, was named a 2013 Jazz Hero by the Jazz Journalists Association this spring. The national award recognizes people in various cities across the USA who have done great work in their local communities. A founder of the Jazz Coalition, Arni was honored for his contributions during more than 40 years on Boston’s jazz scene, especially his work developing jazz education programs for young people. He was nominated for the award by JazzBoston, and it was fitting that WGBH radio host Eric Jackson presented the award during JazzWeek, in a celebration held at Wally’s Jazz Cafe in Boston’s South End.
