Dear Friends,The High Holy Days are uponus. This is, of course, a timeto pray and reflect. But it isalso a time for charity; a timefor us to resolve to helpworthy causes. Theseinclude the State of Israel-through the purchase of Israel Bonds; and our ownsynagogue through donating to the annual HighHoly Day Appeal.Purchasing Israel Bonds allows you to financiallysupport the State of Israel, but you also earnmoney in the process. Hence it is a "win/win"situation. Israel Bonds can be purchased invirtually any amount and for any term from oneyear to 10 years or longer. These are purchased online at the Israel bond web site. The interest ratethese pay is greater than most bank CD's.Currently, at the time of this writing, a 2 year Israelbond pays 3% per year. Your money is guaranteedsafe by the State of Israel. No one has ever lost adime in interest or principal since the program'sinception 70 years ago.The success of our annual High Holy Day appeal isinstrumental to ATC's ability to meet our operatingbudget. Last year, High Holy Day Appeal donationsdid not meet expectations. The amount raised was25% lower than the previous year. It is my hopethat we can reverse this trend this year. As is thecase each year, we will have personalized pledgecards for each congregant which we will hand toyou as you enter the shul on Rosh HaShanah. Asyou present your High Holiday ticket to the usherswho greet you at the entrance, please do notproceed into the sanctuary until we have handedyou your pledge card. I ask all of you to donate asgenerously as possible to this endeavor.I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year,L'Shana Tova,Arthur [email protected]

From the Rabbi’s DeskMindfulness - the practice of listening, payingattention, waking up to the present moment - is exactlywhat the Days of Awe call us to do.

Even if we are just recognizing it, mindfulness hasalways been a traditional part of the Jewish HighHolidays.

It is not an exotic ritual we have to fit it in to ourprayers. It is not something extra we have to add on.The meditation and movement that are part ofmindfulness may not be traditional components of ourliturgy, but mindfulness - the practice of listening, paying attention, waking up to the present moment - isexactly what the Days of Awe call us to do. It is theirvery essence.

Our tradition teaches that the essential mitzvah of RoshHashanah is to listen, to hear the calls of the Shofar andto let them awaken us to the truths of life.

The Shofar sounds: This is your life, right here, rightnow. How will you live?

The world is filled with brokenness and pain, joys anddelights. How will you meet each experience?

You are all here for the sake of each other: What isyours to do? What is yours to give?

This paying attention, this waking up to our lives, righthere, right now, is mindfulness practice.

On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we ask thehaunting question again and again: Who will live andwho will die?

And the answer, of course, is all of us. These holy dayswant us to remember that everything changes andpasses and this life we are living is a precious andfragile gift. Our holy days remind us with greatintensity that it is up to us to choose how we will live.We are each here for a short time - are we living whatwe most value? Are we living what we most love?

This awareness is mindfulness practice.

Salachti k'dvarecha, I forgiveyou, as you have asked. Wechant these words at KolNidre. Yet even though God,the Mystery, the Infinite saysto us, "I forgive you as youhave asked," we spend allevening and the entire nextday proclaiming, "But I didthis wrong, I caused this pain,I messed up yet again."

And the Mystery responds: "You are forgiven as youhave asked. You are loved. You are cherished. You arefree to begin again."

Mindfulness practice teaches us to forgive by helpingus become aware that we are all doing the best we canin each moment. If we could have done better, wewould have. Mindfulness practice encourages us toapproach ourselves and each other with compassionand understanding. We all fall short, we all makemistakes and cause pain.

Rather than beating ourselves up yet again, it isacknowledging our own and each other'svulnerabilities and pain with compassion andunderstanding - that is the way toward growth andpossibility. Placing compassion, love and forgivenesson our hearts is mindfulness practice.

Avinu Malkeinu: "Our source, our guide, help us, showus the way." On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, wecall out for guidance. In this life, we all will get lost, weall will go astray. And it is the noticing that we are lostand the asking for guidance that are the first stepstoward return.

This, too, is mindfulness practice: Discerning wherewe have gone astray so as to return sooner and withgreater ease.

Mindfulness practice helps us realize that we areconnected to each and every being on this miraculous

Rabbi Gerson South Area Religious SchoolL’Shana Tovah to all!

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at High Holidayservices. It is with great pride that I tell you that several ofour school-age members will be taking part in the Servicesthis year.

We had a very successful Enrichment Program for ourolder students this summer. Six students participated atvarious times. They improved their Hebrew and prayerskills and had a great time. Thanks so much to ArthurArkanase for his time and devotion to our students.

Religious School begins on Sunday, September 16th. Therewill be a breakfast for the parents and a Challah Bake andHigh Holiday Crafts for the students. Please bring yourchildren and grandchildren to join us as well as friends.Just let me know so we will have enough materials.

On Sunday evening, September 23rd, there will be aDinner in the Sukkah. On Wednesday, September 26th, wewill join USY for Pizza in the Hut. On Monday, October1st, we will hold a Simchat Torah Celebration.

Of course, we will be learning about the High Holidayseason while at school. Special snacks and crafts anddiscussion of the significance of this time will be a largepart of our curriculum. The students will think about whatthey have done the past year and how they can improve inthe coming year. We will thank G-d for all our blessings. The students will decorate the Sukkah and make a"Sukkah" in the hall downstairs. It is not a kosher Sukkahbut they really enjoy constructing it and learn while theyare having fun.

The children will have two new laptop computers for theiruse. We will have special programs installed to enhancetheir learning. I know they will enjoy that.

Our curriculum will include Hebrew reading and languageskills, Biblical and Israeli History, Parsha of the Week,Jewish values and prayer skills, to name just a few.

As important as all of this is, we hope to instill pride intheir Jewish identity and a love of being Jewish. There willbe several Class Services this year. Please join us tosupport our children and see how beautifully they do.

Fast of GedalyaTzom Gedalya is a dawn-to-dusk fast observedon the day after Rosh HaShanah, whichcommemorates the tragic death of Gedalya, governor of Judea.

After the Babylonians destroyed the HolyTemple in Jerusalem and exiled many Jews in587/6 BCE, they appointed Gedalya benAchikam as governor of the remaining Jews inthe Holy Land. Jews who had taken refuge inthe surrounding lands of Ammon, Moab andEdom heard of his appointment and returned toJudea to join his group. Under his wise andpious leadership, they tilled, planted andcultivated, coaxing the ravaged land back tohealth.

Prior to Rosh Hashanah the following, Gedalyareceived word that a certain Ishmael benNetaniah, jealous of his position of power anddissatisfied with his tactical alliance with theBabylonians, was planning to kill him and usurpthe leadership for himself. Gedalya dismissedthe report and restrained those who wanted tokill Ishmael.

On Rosh Hashanah, Ishmael came to Gedalyawith ten men, ostensibly to celebrate the holidaywith him. While they were eating together,Ishmael and his men got up and killed Gedalya,as well as all the other Jewish men andBabylonian soldiers who were present.

This treachery was followed by morebloodshed. It also caused the Jews to flee toEgypt, effectively ending the prospects ofJewish settlement in the Holy Land until thereturn of the Babylonian exiles under thepatronage of Cyrus the Great of Persia. Thus, the Babylonian exile was absolute, and Judeawas left bereft of her children.

In memory of Gedalya's tragic death and itsdisastrous aftermath, we fast every year on the3rd of Tishrei, the day after Rosh Hashanah. Ifthe 3rd of Tishrei falls on Shabbat, the fast ispostponed to the 4th of Tishrei. Like other"minor" fasts, it begins at dawn (alothashachar) and ends at nightfall.

As it is written in Zechariah 8:19, Tzom Gedalyais one of the four fasts that will be converted tojoy and feasting in the Messianic era.

"Whoever saves a single life, it is as if he had saved the whole world,"according to the Talmud. But you can do better than that, because a singleblood donation can save one, two, or even three lives.

Please participate in the Red Cross Blood Drive that ATC is hosting in thelower Social Hall on Tuesday, October 23, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. To makean appointment or ask questions, contact Howard Levenson at 781-344-1380 or [email protected]. You can also call the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 or visit redcrossblood.org and enter zip code 02072 in the blue box. It's OK to walk in without an appointment, but you might have a longerwait.

Bring a Red Cross Donor ID or a picture ID. And before you come, drinkextra water, have a meal, and tell your friends.

The whole process takes about an hour, perhaps less.

Where else can you do so much good in so little time?
