The written assessment task for each sample unit requires use of literacy skills that are not commensurate with the literacy requirements of the unit. While the candidate assessment tools specify that the written question assessment can be undertaken verbally, the Assessor Marking Guides for the two units specify that “Learners are required to complete written answers in depth as one line answers will not be sufficient to be deemed satisfactory”.

The statement “Learners are required to complete written answers in depth as one line answers will not be sufficient to be deemed satisfactory” has been removed from the instructions.

The task descriptions within the revised Critical Points Observation Checklists are not sufficiently detailed so that it is clear what the candidate has to do, what evidence is to be provided, and how that evidence will be judged. For example, but not limited to:

It is not always evident what the tasks are in the Critical Points Observation Checklist, or what part of the unit they are meant to address. For example, for unit TLIR4003A the task instruction “Demonstrate use of equipment applications, capacities, and configurations used in contract negotiations” is meant to address required knowledge (of) “equipment applications, capacities, and configurations”. It is not clear how it does this, or how a candidate is meant to demonstrate use of such applications, and in what context.



Similarly for unit TLIX4028A one of the written “questions” in the question assessment is “trial and evaluate a suggestion to increase efficiency in your workplace”. Notwithstanding that this is not a question, but rather a workplace project task, there are no further instructions to clarify what has to be done, over what period, and what evidence is required to be provided.

information on identified hazards and risk control procedures to team members” (SIRXWHS302 PC 1.4) is addressed via one role play where the candidate is required to train a new employee them in the company’s emergency evacuation plan and drill and to conduct a simulated evacuation with them. The mapping guide also identifies that task 2, which requires the candidate to generate a report on store shrinkage, and demonstrate the location of store policy and procedures, show their trainer WHS signage and symbols within their workplace, and explain one of the sign’s purpose and importance in WHS legislation assesses this skill. It is not evident how either of those tasks assesses PC 1.4.

Some tasks require literacy skills that are not consistent with the literacy skills required by the units. For example: o Project 1 for unit SIRXWHS302 requires a written report of

1500-2000 words to describe what information is to be provided to a group of new employees on health and safety. This task is meant to address communication and interpersonal skills. It’s not clear how writing about information to be given addresses communication and interpersonal skills.
