TheLoyolaSchoolsoftheAteneodeManilaUniversity,undertheAteneoPhilippineStudiesInitiative,isinvitingundergraduatestudentsfromallfieldsofstudytoitssummerimmersionandstudyprogram.Scheduled for the intercession semester months of June and July 2018, the summer immersionprogramisdesignedtointroduceforeignandlocalstudentstothepracticeofPhilippinestudiesandtotheFilipinolifeworld.Through this four to six-week program, students will be given the opportunity to engage theuniversity’s eminent Philippine Studies scholars in classes that will demonstrate the variouspossibilitiesofthisareaofstudyandthemethodologiesof itspractitioners.Theseclasseswillalsoallowstudents to immersethemselves inaparticularaspectof thePhilippine lifeworld inordertoprovide an experiential ground for their reflections and insights. Students of this programwill beexposedbothtointellectualandexperientiallearningopportunitieswhichwillserveasaninvitationtoengageintheworkofPhilippineStudies.Therearefourtracksthatstudentcanchoosefrom,dependingontheirowninterests.Eachofthesetracksoffer6unitscredit.TheCulturalLaboratoryThe first track is the Cultural Laboratory, a four-weekprogramonthestudyofsocioculturalissues,including the conservation and promotion of thecultural heritage of particular Philippine districts,towns or cities. Here students will investigatedifferent life-worlds and social and culturallandscapesusingqualitativeresearchmethodsandpursue options for disseminating and utilizingresearch results. Such options include, but notlimited to,documentationof localhistory,places,andpractices,andprovidingtechnicalassistancetoculturalenterprisesandlocalgovernmentunits.The first week of the cultural laboratory isdedicated to classroom work that will preparestudentstocreativelyandmeaningfullyrealizetheirfieldresearchandimmersion.ThePhilippineStart-upCultureThesecondtrackfocusesondevelopinganideaintoabusinessmodelandproductorserviceprototype.In doing so, the student will learn about thePhilippinebusinessstart-upcultureandPhilippinebuying behaviors, enterprise etiquette, andbusiness negotiations in order to develop goodbusinessrelationships. This6-unit,4-weekcoursewillbeginwithlecturesontheFilipinowayofdoingbusiness, followed by exposure to the BusinessAcceleration program of the school, ending withdeveloping a prototype, for a close-up look atPhilippinebusinessinaction.

FilipinoUrbanitiesThis third track will present the student with aninterdisciplinary framework for studying the city.From a philosophical, sociological, historical,development, and literary perspective, studentswillstudyPhilippinecitiesandtheirsituatednessinthe in the global order. They will study theemergence of the Philippine cities, theirdevelopment, their lifeworld, and the people’sresponses to this. Aside from classroom work,studentswillbegivenperiodictoursoftheMetroManila to immerse in its various worlds andurbanities.TheAteneoDevelopmentFieldSchool

ThefourthtrackistheDevelopmentFieldSchoolisa6-unit,4-weekcoursedesignedtohonestudents’skills in applied research, deepen theirunderstandingofadevelopmenttheme,andallowthem to contribute to social development. ADFStypically begins with a week of classroomdiscussions and exercises on key concepts,frameworks,andskills.Thisisfollowedbyaweekof exploration, where students visit variousstakeholderorganizations andareas to familiarizethemselves with the industry or sector, itsdynamics, and the relevant issues. Students arethentaskedtofocusonthechallengesexperiencedbyoneparticularcommunityororganizationandtouse research to resolve some of thesechallenges. The third week is spent conductingintensiveresearch,whilethefourthandfinalweekis spent completing the data collection process,producing the research outputs, and presentingthese outputs to the partner community ororganizatio
