CATHEDRAL NEWSLETTER 30 October 2016 — 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time (Yr C) St Johns Cathedral, Portsmouth RUNNING TO REACH OUT! Well, I managed, together with several parishioners, to complete the Great South Run which was an amazing experience. Well done to my fellow runners Dom Deboo, Janusz Kruzycki, Trevor Oliver, Lucy and Laura Philips for their enthusiasm, energy and commitment. The atmosphere was electric! I was quite amazed to think that with the many runners, the day would have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for some wonderful charies and causes. Most people had the cause they were running for on the back of their t-shirt so I saw the many different causes. We also had lots of entertainment on the way around with bands, bag pipes, steel drums together with thousands of people shoung well done’ ‘you can do itand the like. There were also lots of children holding their hands up over the railings to catch a high fivefrom many of us. Heres a reminder of the project our team was running for and if you have sponsored us already thank you so much. If you havent yet sponsored us the details are at the boom. Insight is a group working together to build community for those who feel isolated, perhaps through caring for others, or who experience mental health problems, those in recovery from addicon, or those who do not have a place to go and to meet other people. They would like to raise as much as possible to give them the opportunity to offer more ambious acvies, such as gardening, music and so on. Also to give them funds for their weekly food bill. RUNNING TO REACH OUT!

I was quite amazed to think that with the many runners, the day would have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for some wonderful charities and causes.

Most people had the cause they were running for on the back of their t-shirt so I saw the many different causes. We also had lots of entertainment on the way around with bands, bag pipes, steel drums together with thousands of people shouting ‘well done’ ‘you can do it’ and the like. There were also lots of children holding their hands up over the railings to catch a “high five” from many of us. Here’s a reminder of the project our team was running for and if you have sponsored us already thank you so much. If you haven’t yet sponsored us the details are at the bottom.

Insight is a group working together to build community for those who feel isolated, perhaps through caring for others, or who experience mental health problems, those in recovery from addiction, or those who do not have a place to go and to meet other people. They would like to raise as much as possible to give them the opportunity to offer more ambitious activities, such as gardening, music and so on. Also to give them funds for their weekly food bill.

There are a number of ways to donate. Firstly, you can go to this website and donate through this which can be found on: https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/insight2016. You can also drop your donations in at the Parish Office but if you can please mark your envelope as being for the Great South Run. Or you can hand in your donations after Mass this Sunday to one of the Insight Team who will be located to the left of the altar. Over £2000 has been raised so far and this secures Insight’s project for over a year which allows us the freedom to develop the project. Thank you all for contributing. If you would like to offer your time rather than money please do get in touch with one of the Discovery Centre team.

SAINT FOR THE WEEK: Bl. John Body: one of the English Martyrs he was executed at Andover on 30 October 1583. He was born in Somerset and studied at Oxford. After marrying he became a schoolmaster in the Winchester area but refusing to abandon his Catholic faith he was arrested and jailed. At his execution he said ‘if you may make the hearing of a Mass treason, or the saying of an Ave Maria, you may make what you please treason.’

Please pray this week for: The Pope’s prayer intention: That the countries

which take in great numbers of displaced persons and refugees may find support for their efforts which show solidarity.
