And above all, friendly and hospitable local people will welcome you to the island. You will be convinced again that it is fun to try triathlon in such a place.

About Saipan• Saipan is the capital island of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

in the Pacific Ocean. The major islands nearby are Rota and Tinian.

• About 12.5 miles long and 5.5 miles wide, Saipan has a population of about 53,000 people. Saipan natives are Chamorro and Carolinian. There are also many American, Filipino, Korean, Chinese and Japanese residents.

• Please drive/cycle on the right hand side of the road in the lead up to the race. When stopped at a red light, it is still possible to turn right; Please give way to the right. You will be fined if you ride a bike without a helmet. You must be 21 years or older to hire a car.

• Saipan roads are made using crushed coral rocks for the blacktop roads and will be very slippery when wet. Please pay attention to downhills and corners. Recently many parts of the roads have been changed to ordinary non-slip asphalt. The IRONMAN 70.3 Saipan cycling course uses the ordinary asphalt road.

• Public security is safer than Japan. There are no wild animals, poisonous snakes, and no mosquitoes with risk of malaria.

• Saipan has a tropical climate and the average temperature is 28 degrees Celcius. The temperature does not tend to change throughout the year. It is slightly cooler in winter, however there is no problem for swimming year round.

• Saipan is a small island with limited sports shops. Please ensure you bring all race nutrition supplies and bike parts/spares you may require for the race.

IRONMAN 70.3 Saipan Course Cut-Offs

The below cut off times are for all athletes across the race. Should an athlete be unable to reach one of these cut off times, they will no longer be able to continue racing. Race results will be classified as a Did Not Finish (DNF). Event Personnel will assist in transporting the athlete back to the event precinct via Sag Wagons. The below information outlines each leg’s cut off policy in further detail.

SWIM – 1 HOUR 10 MINUTES FROM AN ATHLETE’S INDIVIDUAL START TIME.

BIKE – 5 HOURS FROM AN ATHLETE’S INDIVIDUAL START TIME.

RUN – 8 HOURS FROM AN ATHLETE’S INDIVIDUAL START TIME.

In addition to the above cut off times, athletes may be cut off at any time based on the Race Directors discretion and judgement. Reasons for this may include, but are not limited to, medical, contingency, logistical and or race rule violations. In the situation of one or more legs (swim, bike, run) being modified under contingency scenarios the Race Director also reserves the right to announce new cut off times.

Relay Teams

Swimmers will exit the water and meet their cyclist at their allocated numbered bike position, handing their timing chip to the cyclist. The cyclist must wait until they are in possession of the timing chip before un-racking their bike. The timing chip acts as the relay baton, the swimmer must start with the timing chip and the runner must cross the Finish Line wearing this around their ankle.

Once the swimmer has handed over the timing chip they must leave the Transition area immediately (via the Relay Team’s entry/exit point). Once the cyclist commences their bike leg, the runner is allowed into the Transition area. Please follow directions of all Race Officials and Volunteers.

When the cyclist returns, they will rack their bike back in its allocated numbered position and hand the timing chip to the runner. The cyclist must then leave the Transition area immediately once they have handed the runner their timing chip (via the Relay Team’s entry/exit point).

Relay Teams will receive their finisher T-shirts and medal upon finishing.

Course

Swim: 1.9km

The 2 lap, triangular swim course is located on the western side of the island at Pau Pau Beach in San Roque District. The course is western facing toward the Philippine Sea and provides calm, sheltered conditions due to the natural coral reef formations that have created a natural breakwater. The shallow, crystal clear water offers spectacular visibility of the coral and wildlife below. Water temperature will be around 27 Degrees Celsius making it highly unlikely to be a wetsuit legal swim.

Bike: 90km

After finishing the swim and exiting transition on your bike, you will turn left onto Middle Road and ride through the beautiful Northern region of Marpi where you will pass the historical Banzai cliff and beautiful Grotto diving spot. There are some hill climbs to tackle in this area of the island. The far turnaround is located at the scenic lookout at Bird Island where you will turn and head back towards the Pau Pau Beach transition area. Please be aware that you must keep to the left side of the road throughout this section. You will only complete the Northern section of the course once before heading onto the 2 lap Southern section toward San Antonio District. After passing the transition area heading Southbound, you will be forced to switch over to the right side of the road for the remainder of the bike leg and then continue down through the main street of downtown Garapan. There will be impressive ocean views all the way along the ride down toward the Southern turnaround at San Antonio. This section of the course is mostly flat and straight. Once making the turn at Pacific Islands Club (PIC), you will return toward Pau Pau Beach to the North where you will make a turn for the second lap of the Southern section and repeat what you’ve just done for a second & final time before heading back into Transition after finishing your 90km ride.

Run: 21.1km

The 2 lap, 21.1km run course shares most of the same roads as the Northern section of the bike course. The outbound run is mostly a gradual uphill until you reach the turnaround point and begin the downhill return back toward the transition area. You will experience fantastic views of the coast as you work your way through the half marathon. Once completing the first lap, you will turn and repeat this again for a final time before heading into the Finish Line at Pau Pau Beach. You must keep to the left side of the road at all times throughout the run leg.

Transition and Venue

T1 and T2 are both set at the beautiful Pau Pau Beach.

Swim Course

The swim course is located at Pau Pau Beach Park in the San Roque District, the northern part of Saipan Island facing the Philippine Sea. About 500 meters off the shore the corals cluster in groups, forming the coral reefs and separating the lagoons from the open ocean. Therefore, the swim course is similar to a large pool. The water is crystal clear blue and has high visibility. The average water depth is between 2-3m. There are no dangerous sea animals.

Wetsuit RulingYou can wear wetsuits, but athletes participating in wetsuits will not be eligible for awards and/or IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship slots.

The water temperature in March is around 28 degrees Celcius. If the water temperature is high, swimming with a wet suit may cause heat stroke, so please consider the water temperature and your own swimming ability. We will inform you of water temperature at the athlete briefing on 10th March. Before the start, we will check all athletes in the waiting area to identify who is and isn’t wearing a wetsuit. Athletes wearing wetsuits will start first and be exempt from the race awards and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship slot allocation. The athletes not wearing wetsuits will start a few minutes afterward.

The swim start will be a simultaneous, rolling start.

Swim Start

Top 10 Checklist

An open-water swim in a triathlon is substantially different from swimming in a pool. To alleviate stress, it’s important that you arrive on race day healthy, fit and prepared. Here's a top-10 checklist to help get you ready.

1. Prepare for Race Conditions

• Race day should not be your first open water swim. Make sure some of your training replicates real race conditions, including water temperature, proximity to other swimmers and wearing a wetsuit if needed.

2. Race in Shorter Events

• Being properly trained is the best way to reduce anxiety. If possible, race in shorter events and clinics to prepare yourself for open water conditions.

• For extra guidance, talk to a coach or your local triathlon club.

3. Learn About Course Details

• It’s important to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically prior to race day. Thoroughly review the race website and pre-race communication to familiarise yourself with the course.

• Keep in mind, every body of water is different, so you’ll need to educate yourself on water current and surf conditions.

• Study the event timetable to plan for proper arrival and preparation.

4. Ensure Heart Health

• As an athlete in training, you should take the proper steps to assess your health with your physician.

• If you have any concerns about your heart health, we recommend you consult with your GP prior undertaking the event.

5. Pay Attention to Warning Signs

• If you experience chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, light- headedness or blacking out while training, consult your doctor.

6. Don’t Use New Gear on Race Day

• Focus on controlling as much as you can on race day.

• You should never race in equipment you haven’t trained in this is not the time to test new gear.

• Make sure your wetsuit fits properly and that your goggles, swim cap and other accessories work properly.

• Prepare for the unexpected with backups of all your gear.

7. Warm Up on Race Day

• Arrive early enough on race day for a proper warm-up prior to the start.

• No morning warm up swim on race day.

• Spend between 5 and 10 minutes getting loose.

• Be sure to do some cardio activity, such as a light jog, to increase circulation and prep your muscles.

8. Checkout the Course

• Get comfortable with the course by checking out water conditions, the swim entry and exit layouts along with the turning buoy locations.

• Identify basic navigation points so that you know what you are swimming towards.

9. Start Easy– Relax and Breathe

•Don’t race at maximum effort from the start.

•Relax and focus on proper breathing technique as you settle into a sustainable pace.

10. Be Alert and Ask For Help

•In a race setting always stop at the first sign of a medical problem.

•If you or a fellow athlete needs help, just raise your hand to alert a lifeguard or safety boat.

•Race rules allow for competitors to stop or rest at any time during the swim.

•Feel free to hold on to a static object like a raft, buoy, or dock.

•You may also rest by holding on to a kayak, boat or even a paddle-board. As long as you don’t use it to move forward, you won’t face disqualification.

Special Measures for Bike

【Traffic direction】The north side (North course) is where you will ride on the left hand side of the road and the south side (South course) is where you will ride on the right hand side of the road. We will switch the riding lane from the left to the right around the entrance of the swimming venue at Pau Pau Beach. Please follow the guidance of the staff. This is a special measure on the course to avoid crossover (crossing) between athletes.

【North course/1 lap/ left hand side riding 】After finishing the swim, the bike course will go up toward Marpi, the hilly area and out to the beautiful area at far turnaround point at Bird Island Lookout. Once making the turnaround at Bird Island Lookout, you will ride back to the swimming venue in San Roque area. You will only do 1 lap of the North Course.

【South course/2 laps/ right hand side riding 】Once reaching the swimming venue, you will be directed to switch the riding lane from the left hand side to the right hand side of the road. After this, you will continue to ride south, through the main street of downtown Garapan, and down Beach Road. You will have breathtaking ocean views on your right side. Most of this area is a flat and straight road. You will make your far turn at the Pacific Islands Club (PIC) and come back to the swimming venue before turning to complete the South course for a second and final time. You will do 2 laps of the South Course. The Bike will finish at the Pau Pau Beach Park.

11

◆Aids on Run courseThere are three aid stations on the run course that athletes will pass nine times at: 2 km, 4 km, 6.5 km, 8.5 km, 10.5 km, 12.5 km, 14.5 km, 17 km, and 19 km. Water (ice water), sports drinks, salt, and bananas will be available. As Saipan is hot, to prevent dehydration, please regularly take sports drink and salt. In Saipan, all sports drinks are bundled together and called Gatorade. Please ask for Gatorade when you need sports drink. Communication is in English & pointing is also OK.

Run Course You will be running on the left hand side of the road. It is a 2 lap course. The far turnaround point is located on an uphill approximately 5 km from the transition area. Once returning from the far turnaround, you will turn for your second and final lap down near the transition area to complete the same route. Upon finishing your second lap, you will need to turn right back into Pau Pau Beach area for your finish. You will experience some great views of nature and the beautiful coastline along the route.

Race Rules

We are using the IRONMAN’s Global Competition Rules 2016, and this is a ‘NON Drafting Event”.

A summary of the key rules are as follows:

The draft zone will remain at 12 meters long, measured from leading edge of front wheel of front cyclist to front wheel of trailing cyclist. An athlete must immediately move to the side upon entering the draft zone of another athlete when passing (i.e. no slipstreaming) and must continuously progress through the draft zone. A maximum of 25 seconds will be allowed for each pass.

Race Penalty Cards being used are Yellow (Stop and Go Penalty), Blue (Time Penalty - Five Minute Penalty) and Red (Disqualification). Any accumulation of three cards will result in a disqualification (Red Card).

More information can be found on IRONMAN website.

To minimise the possibility of infringing the rules on race day and avoiding a visit to the Penalty Box, please observe the following:• Keep 12 meters between yourself and the cyclist in front of you – front wheel to front wheel • Pass on the left of the cyclist in front (never on the left)• Complete your pass within 25-seconds• If passed, drop back immediately 12 meters and ensure you have dropped back the full 12 meters

before re-passing• Conduct personal toilet stops at the oncourse toilet facilities provided.• Remember to treat other athletes, volunteers and officials with courtesy and consideration as

failure to do so is Unsportsmanlike Conduct.

Triathlon is an individual race and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid infringements. A Technical Official’s ruling is final in the case of Drafting, Blocking, and Illegal Pass infringements (Judgment Calls) and these are not subject to either protest or appeal. Following are the most common rule infringements:• Blocking – Riding on the left side of an athlete without passing or riding on the left hand side of the

bike lane when clear of other athletes• Drafting – Following a leading cyclist closer than 12 meters and failing to pass in 25 seconds OR

after being passed, failing to drop back 12 meters before re-passing• Illegal Pass – Passing on the right• Littering - Discarding items, e.g. tyres, bottles/cups, gel wrappers etc., on any part of the course

except within sight of an Aid Station• Helmet – Always have your chin strap securely fastened when moving with your bike

A Technical Official will advise you of any time Penalty by calling your number, advising you of the nature of the infringement and showing you a BLUE Card. It will be then your responsibility to serve the 5 minute time Penalty at the next Penalty Box. NOTE that any 3 infringements across the course during the event will result in a Disqualification.

IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship Slots

Thirty (30) Age Group qualifying slots for the 2017 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship (September 9-10, 2017, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States of America) will be awarded to the top Age Group finishers.

Qualified athletes are required to claim their IRONMAN World Championship slot in-person on Sunday March 11, 2017, from 6pm at Fiesta Resort and Spa. Please bring a valid form of Photo ID with you and be prepared to pay the full entry fee $425.00 USD (plus 8% Active fee) with Credit Card only. No cheque or cash payments will be accepted.

Final Slot Allocation will be determined on race day based on the number of official starters. The numbers of slots for each Age Group will be announced right after the race.

Prevention of Dehydration

Dehydration can be caused by physical exertion in hot climates. Dehydration can quickly cause damage to the brain and liver, it can be very dangerous but preventative methods such as drinking water and taking salt are very simple.【Prevention method】• Do not consume alcohol the day before the race.• Consume water the day before the race.• Drink water or sports drink before swimming.• Have water before being thirsty during the race.• Spray water on your body, in order to avoid rising body temperature.• Do not forget to take salt. Without salt in the body, no matter how much water you drink, it will not

be absorbed into the body. Sports drinks are recommended.• Aid stations will have salt, however it is recommended you bring a minimum supply.• Run in the shade where possible.• Tell someone if you feel unwell. Be sure to stay on the course. If you leave the course, we will be

unable to find and assist you.

One of the earliest symptoms of dehydration is finger joint stiffness. When you receive a water cup at the aid station, if you feel something strange on your finger, stop the race immediately and take a sports drink and rest in a cool place. Although this may help, if you still feel unwell, please seek medical advice from our team.
