Greetings:

Spring is here and the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation’s 2015 Spring Program Guide is filled with many exceptional spaces to visit while creating memorable experiences with your family and friends.

I am excited to announce that you can now take a stroll along the new 1.2 mile long Southwest BeltLine Connector Spur Trail, which winds through a serene stretch of woods through the Beecher Hills and Westwood Terrace neighborhoods in southwest Atlanta. Also, just in time for the warmer weather, you and your family can experience the 21 new playgrounds and seven new outdoor exercise complexes at parks such as Tullwater, Benteen, Esther Peachy, Grove and Tuscan Trail Parks.

Each year, DPR focuses on transforming the lives of our residents and revitalizing our neighborhoods through expanding our parks, greenspaces and recreational offerings. This past year, the Department of Parks and Recreation acquired an additional 171 acres of land, which included 14 new parks. This resulted in increasing the percent of Atlanta residents living within a half mile walk of a park from 50 to 64 percent.

My administration will continue to work with Atlanta’s business and philanthropic community to invest in our community through upgrading, expanding, building and maintaining clean, safe and accessible parks and creating cultural and educational programs for our residents and visitors.

On behalf of the City of Atlanta, I encourage you to get out and enjoy all that the Department of Parks and Recreation has to offer throughout this spring season.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Kasim Reed

Letter from the Commissioner

Dear Atlantans: Get ready to leave your scarves and winter coats at home – Spring is the perfect time to get out and enjoy all that Atlanta has to offer in our parks and outdoor activities. The Department of Parks and Recreation is excited to serve our great city with another season of exceptional programs and activities. As we prepare for this year’s Camp Best Friends program, we are excited to incorporate more outdoor activities. Camp activities will focus on introducing youth to the wonders, ideas and fun that can be discovered in “The Great Outdoors,” while promoting an active lifestyle. All camp participants will be fully engaged in mental and physical outdoor activities and experience all that our parks and recreational assets have to offer.

This Spring, we will continue to make significant capital investments across our many facilities and greenspaces. Citizens will soon be able to enjoy reconstructed playgrounds at MLK, Lillian Cooper Shepherd Park, Windsor Street Park, Reverend Orange, Cleveland Avenue Park, Arlington Circle Playlot, Rose Circle Park, Barbara A. McCoy Park, and Ormond-Grant Park. We will also complete additional improvements to some of our recreation centers and pools. In all that we do, we strive to improve the quality of life for Atlanta’s residents and visitors every day. We will continue to work to make our city stronger by providing exceptional spaces and memorable experiences. There is no better time to get out, get active and enjoy all of the activities that Parks and Recreation has to offer. Have fun!

Yours in Service,

Amy PhuongCommissioner, Department of Parks and RecreationCity of Atlanta
