I don’t think anyone in Atlanta will

forget, I think we are all more than

ready for spring.

I want to kick off this spring issue

publishing her own magazine and as the managing editor

of the Home Depot How-To Community and Garden Club at

HomeDepot.com, Hallock brings a wealth of experience, new

ideas and a warm and welcoming spirit to our team. Please

come by to meet her, as well as the rest of our team, personally

at our booth at the 36th Annual Spring Atlanta Home Show

taking place at the Cobb Galleria March 21-23. Read about who

will be on stage and special attractions on pages 23-35 in the

of�cial Spring Atlanta Home Show Directory.

Although we cannot of�cially start playing in our own gardens

until after April 15, we have ideas, resources and a planner

to help get you all ready for a colorful and fruitful spring and

summer. Use our Annual Landscape Planner on page 49 as

your personal workbook. Fill it out and take it with you to talk

ideas with your landscape architect or to buy plants at your

local nursery. Don’t know who to talk to or where to start? We

have you covered with resources from around our city.

While we are ready for those warm days, we will still have

some chilly days and nights in March. So, sit back, relax and

get ready to soak it all in by reading our feature on bathtubs,

starting on page 42. If you have not shopped for one in a while,

you will be amazed at the technology – yes, technology – that

is designed into today’s bathtubs and the science that goes into

the bathtub design itself. We are very fortunate in Atlanta to

have one of the leading bathtub design companies in the nation

in our backyard – MTI Baths. They have perfected the art and

design of the bathtub. Ready to relax?

I cannot close this letter without sincerely thanking my entire

staff and India Powell for their hard work and dedication to

making each issue interesting, entertaining and useful for

our readers. India has served as our interim editor when Kali

Mallard started a family this year and left to be a full-time

The Aging in Place exhibit will show how simple elements of universal design can make your home accessible and safe for everyone regardless of age or ability featuring a kitchen, bath, ramps and entryway options. This exhibit and the experts present at the show will offer real solutions to your tough questions regarding living longer in your own home.

DuradekTM vinyl deck waterproo�ng membrane is marking 40 years in

business, having grown over the past four decades from pioneering

product to leading brand in the competitive niche market of deck

waterproo�ng. Originally conceived by two contractors in British

Columbia’s Okanagan region in 1974, Duradek was inspired by a marine

vinyl used to cover the interior �oor of small boats. These two boating

Danny and Heather Almond are fans of historic homes and when they purchased their 1910 bungalow in West End Atlanta,

they knew that some renovations were going to be necessary. The kitchen had several layers of �ooring on top of the original

heart of pine, which had to be stripped down.

To create extra space for new, larger appliances, space was taken under a stairwell on the opposite side of the kitchen

wall for a refrigerator, pantry and convection oven. A closet was converted to a laundry room and both spaces are

separated by custom barn-style rolling doors to conserve space. A wall was opened up in the adjacent hallway to provide

better �ow and a more open feeling. Because the walls and ceiling had settled over the years, everything installed is

white with varying textures to keep it open and light and to make the space appear larger without the distraction of the

settled angles of the walls.

The new island, which was fabricated to match an existing pantry, is made from heart of pine and stained to match, giving

the illusion that it was original. Wood counters are the feature of the cabinets against the wall with a recycled milk glass

counter on the island.

Ceiling tiles were installed as a �oor to ceiling back splash to add interest and a dropped crown molding was added about 1

foot down from the 14-foot ceilings with rope lighting to create ambiance and make the space appear larger.

The couple insisted that as much of the original house that could be saved be reused in the new kitchen, so the trim from the

original doors was reused to frame the new installations.

Set the scene for years of family fun with a playhouse By Shandra Hill Smith

Who says amusement parks are where all the fun is?

Backyard adventure destinations, outdoor play sets and

playhouses come in unlimited options today, making

for entertainment and an escape for your little ones and

years of family fun.

“We have so many parents that say ‘This is just as much for

me as for my child.’ So, if you can inspire an adult to be able to

have as much fun with their kid as their kid is having, I think that

says a lot,” says Brian Pound, co-owner of Dreamtime Outdoors,

which produces custom residential and commercial play sets,

playhouses and treehouses.

An investment in funA play set that includes components for play such as a

swing, slide and climbing area, Pound says, either can

bring a fantasyland to your backyard, or, without proper

planning, end up being a shortsighted �nancial investment

you regret.

“It’s so short-sighted to go out and buy something for $500

to $700 or even $1,000 for something you think is going to

last until children are 11 or 12 years old when the stuff that

you buy in that price range is going to tear up.” The quality

of the product may look good in the store, but over time, he

says, customers end up paying companies like Dreamtime

as much as $150 to haul away the old play set.

Considering that, Pound urges you to “wait until you can

afford something that is worthwhile. It would be better to

get less product, and a better product, than something that

is prone to tear up within 2 to 3 years. Read reviews about

the company. Read reviews about the speci�c product.”

It’s only a good idea to start with something smaller and

cheaper if you plan to relocate within 2 years, he says. For a

more long-term investment, Pound suggests a 5-foot-by-5-

foot fort for a standard play set, with a beginning price tag

around $1,800. A quality play set will provide children as

young as 2 years old something they can grow into over the

course of as many as 10 years. A 5-foot-by-5-foot play set,

for example, can be out�tted with a wooden roof, sandbox,

slides, climbing ramp, telescope, trapeze bar and more.

Pound also recommends taking advantage of a consultation

�rst (his company provides consultations for free) before

preparing the area for an outdoor playground.

“You really want to think about longevity,” adds Corinne

Mathews of Dream Room Designs in Atlanta. In addition to

safety, Matthews adds, “you want to think about how old

your kids are, what kinds of things they’re interested in and

is what you’re planning to put down going to serve their

purposes.”

Design with your child in mindYour children’s interests — play area versus an escape of

sorts — as well as your budget will help you determine if a

play set or a playhouse, both made of wood construction,

works better for your family.

An escape from inside the home, the treehouse or

playhouse, which doesn’t follow any standard model, but

instead is designed with the children’s wish items in mind,

gives boys and girls a bit of freedom by serving as somewhat

of “an outdoor living extension of the house,” Pound says.

Matthews herself, with some contractor support, is building

a backyard extension or getaway for her two children,

Ayanna, 13, and Gavin, 7. Matthews began constructing the

clubhouse last summer.

“When I was growing up, my parents liked to put us out of

the house [to enjoy outdoor playtime],” Matthews says. “It

just gets to the point where when they’re inside, all they

want to do is watch TV. I’d love to say ‘Go outside and play,’

but if there’s nothing out there, they’re back in the house in

5 minutes, telling me that they’re bored.”

Matthews says she and her daughter searched online for

ideas for a clubhouse design. (See above for their adorable 2

story club house!) She wanted to strike a balance that would

accommodate both a teenage girl and grade-school-aged

male, so she made sure to include such play areas such as a

swing and zip line. Combining ideas from the Internet and

television, she and her daughter pulled together a design.

“The clubhouse completely keeps the kids in mind in the

design and it’s their little spot,” says Matthews, who provides

play set and playhouse design services for clients, bringing

in contractors to complete the project that she oversees.

Fun for the whole familyPound says his company builds treehouses on a weekly

basis, and �nds they’re just as popular with girls as boys.

In one example, Pound says his company built an $11,000

treehouse for a 5-year-old girl whose parents told him that

when she outgrows it, they’re planning to go there to hang

out. Parents, he adds, often “are reminiscing about their

own childhood and their own desires for the child when

they’re planning this out. Sometimes people will end up

spending more than they anticipated just because of the

excitement they get with anticipation of how much their

child will enjoy this.”

Using materials recycled from new construction and

remodeling jobs, Glazer Design & Construction in Atlanta

builds traditional treehouses along with those mounted on

the ground and on stilts.

Glazer has built playhouses with wiring for �at screen

televisions, with kitchens and zip lines and with pulleys to

allow children to raise items from the ground �oor to the

top. “We’ve built them to match people’s houses in a smaller

form,” says Randy Glazer, owner and president of Glazer

Design & Construction.

Average sizes for play sets are 6 feet by 6 feet to 8 feet by

10 feet, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $20,000, and, for

custom playhouses, from $8,000 to $20,000, Glazer says.

When deciding on a play set versus playhouse, be sure to

identify an area in your yard that’s smooth and level, he

A bathroom evolutionNot just from a design standpoint, but also regarding

pure functionality, it is astonishing how far bathtubs

have come. A word often used when referring to tubs is

“utilitarian”, since they are practical and found in every

household. As typical and mundane as they originally

may once have been, they are so much more these days.

Now with the ability to be more personalized, and as

Ian Bush of Noland described it, “a work of art in the

home,” tubs make the bathroom one of the highlights of

the home.

The materials used and the shapes that are created in

are two other ways in which bathtubs have changed.

Unlike in years past, tubs are “not just acrylic or cast

iron anymore,” according to Mary Soeder, Atlanta

showroom manager for Plumbing Distributors Inc.

(PDI). Instead, many companies are using materials in

production and updated technology to allow for “unique

and interesting tub shapes and designs,” she says.

Soeder also explains how the vast majority of baths

they feature are freestanding (almost 80 percent to be

exact), “which was not as common 5 to 10 years ago.”

Types of tubsGone are the days of the simple-style baths with an old-

time washtub feel. The array of options now available is

mind-blowing. When deciding on a type of bathtub to

adorn a restroom, homeowners must determine whether

each of the new advancements would add to or take away

from the Zen feel of their own personal space of serenity.

Jetted, soaking, freestanding, completely or partially

built-in, footed, or containing back and armrests…these

are a handful of the many options to consider.

Perhaps the initial question to confront when sorting

through the numerous design and functional choices

offered is what the bathtub will be used for: muscle

soothing (choose jetted), general use (try soaking), skin

therapy (opt for air). This could be a great starting point

for narrowing down the possibilities.

Getting technicalIt is unmistakable that homeowners are now provided

with more than enough ways to individualize their own

bathtub through pure function and design, but there

is still a realm that has not been touched – technology.

Believe it or not, technology has taken this home � xture

by storm. Bathtubs now can be personalized with high-

tech capabilities. Depending on the type of spa-quality

service desired, there is type of tub for every one…a tub

that provides therapy through technology.

Chromatherapy is a therapeutic innovation that has added

a little � air to tubs. “Because colors affect our emotions,

they also can be useful to help heal our bodies and mind,”

says Becky Sue Becker of Designs by BSB in Lawrenceville.

This practice, also referred to as color therapy, uses lights of

various hues to balance the bather’s energy. Red for passion,

green for healing, orange for success, and blue for calmness

and peace; these are a few of the qualities enhanced through

this process and the colors with which they are associated.

The way in which bathtubs maintain water warmth is

another important aspect to consider. The material used to

create the tub can help hold in warmth, or expel it quickly

like cast iron tubs used to. There are also heating techniques

to keep water warm during the bath, as well as to heat the

surface of the tub, reducing the chill of contact.

Lastly, short of the physical relaxation factor of a massage

from hydrotherapy and the warmth of being submerged in

water – perhaps with bubbles thrown in for good measure –

what else could help one unwind? Music! In this age of being

constantly “plugged in” it is no wonder that melodic tunes

have shown up in the bathroom. Some tubs are now made

with speakers hidden behind walls, allowing the user to be

surrounded by songs of their choice.

What is even more impressive than the developments made

in bathtub design is the fact that they can be combined to

create the perfect at-home spa experience.

Keep it cleanAs any homeowner is well aware, cleaning can seem like a

full time job by itself. A clean home is a happy home, and

the bathroom is no exception. Some companies offer special

cleaning solutions that are safe for pipes, and of course the

type of material the tub is made of should be considered

when choosing formulas for sanitizing. Soeder warns that

“once acrylic is worn and discolored, there is no way to

restore it.” Knowledge like this is important for the consumer

so they can make their bathtubs last.

Additionally, various tubs are self-maintaining. For example,

some jetted tubs feature automatic purge cycles that rid air

channels of any water left over after use, making upkeep a

little easier.

Bathe uniquelyIn all, today’s bathtubs are designed to give homeowners the

best options for creating a unique spa atmosphere right in

their home. Personalization is key to making this place of

escape as bene� cial as it can be, and design helps make that

possible. From classic and complex to modern and simple,

there are no limits to tub style.

Now that you see how bathtubs have changed and learned

about the options that are now available, explore a little

to ensure you � nd the right tub for you before starting

that bathroom remodeling project. After all, you deserve a

relaxing getaway no matter how temporary…even if it only

lasts until the water gets cold.

Backyard EscapeProject by Shady Grove Landscape Company

The clients, who homeschool their sons, wanted a beautiful and functioning outdoor classroom space, along with an attractive rocky mountain theme and vegetable garden. Shady Grove Landscape Company created an extensive design that featured a number of hardscape elements, including a new deck, �re ring, a boulder wall, and a pool with a spa and rocky water feature, all interspersed with lush plantings. Project challenges included poor drainage in the �at areas of the yard, city requirements for redirecting stormwater runoff, and comfortably incorporating the detailed design into a small and narrow backyard. Over a 16-week period, Shady Grove worked closely with Hilltop Pools to overcome the challenges and handcraft a backyard wonderland. From removal of the old deck, pool excavation and redesigning the backyard drainage layout to installation of the pool and surrounding hardscapes and woodworking projects, Shady Grove exceeded the homeowners’ expectations. Special touches in the landscape included fragrant lemon-scented thyme planted amongst the boulders for the wall around the pool and a strategically placed pool toy storage area under the new deck. The rocky mountain theme featured soothing and colorful specimens like Blue Atlas Cedar, Fat Albert Blue Spruce, dark-purple Smoketrees, and Catlin’s Giant Ajuga, all woven into the design tapestry to create a lush natural getaway for school, fun and relaxation.

Residential ResortProject by Outside Landscape Group LLC

These metro area empty-nesters were looking for a creative approach to designing and building a resort-styled backyard. Although it extended along the entire back of the house, their current deck did not offer a useable space to entertain friends and family. The side entry into the house and backyard had good structure with a fence that unfortunately was falling apart. The area also lacked a good pathway surface that was comfortable and inviting. The backyard itself was a large area of grass that was more maintenance than it was worth with the couple’s kids moving out of the house. Outside Landscape Group Owner Rick Kaldrovics led the project with a plan for a new entry area complete with a new fence and an inviting walk built with large slab step stones and a cobble border. With added evergreens combined with �owering perennials, the entrance came to life, providing curb appeal and a new sense of arrival to both the home and backyard. Entering the back, visitors are welcomed with a fully updated and rebuilt deck with an expanded covered porch area perfect for entertaining guests as they overlook the new pool space. The porch area includes an elaborate outdoor stone kitchen that features a grill, smoker, refrigerator and prep space. Year-Round BeautyProject by Chatham Landscape Services Chatham Landscape Services handled all the design and installation of this residence, as well as its ongoing maintenance. As a �rst step in the transformation of this landscape, more than 400 loads of dirt were removed and the space was graded to create a �at backyard for the children to play sports. A pool house and patio were added to make an outdoor room for entertaining and relaxing. The existing stone wall was torn down, cleaned up and its materials reused to make the wall look like it had always been there. Finally, every window along the back of the house overlooks the pool, showcasing it as a piece of outdoor art that looks beautiful, even in the middle of winter.

Finish pruning evergreen shrubs and trees early this month. Cut

to shape and control plant size. This is a great time for renovation

pruning of overgrown hollies and lorapetalum.

Apply dormant spray to fruit trees until mid-March. After that

point, dilute the solutions concentration by half, and follow label

directions carefully.

Examine the backside of euonymus and camellia leaves for scale insects. A thorough spray with horticultural oil will

remedy the situation if the pests are found.

Fertilize winter and spring-blooming bulbs after they bloom with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Resist the urge to cut off the unsightly leaves.

Instead let them yellow and die naturally—this feeds the bulb

to help next year’s �ower. Try planting other cool-season �owers

such as snapdragons or dianthus among the bulbs to hide the

unsightly foliage!

If you didn’t get to it last month, trim mondograss and liriope before new growth appears. Use a lawn mower adjusted to the

highest setting. Add a grass-catcher attachment to eliminate

raking.

Do you have a water feature, pond or fountain? This is a good

time for a cleanup—add debris and muck from the pond or

fountain to your compost pile. If you’ve got �sh in the water

feature, begin feeding when the water temperature reaches 50

degrees F.

There’s still time to plant fescue, but be sure that you do not

apply a pre-emergent weed killer. Feed newly seeded fescue

lawns with a lawn starter fertilizer that is high in phosphorus

(middle number).

Itching to plant vegetables and get a head start on the harvest?

You can start tomatoes, peppers and many annuals indoors, for

transfer into the garden in mid-April. The University of Georgia’s

guide to vegetable gardening is a great resource:

Vegetables such as radishes, carrots, beets, turnips, broccoli,

cauli�ower and lettuce can be planted from seed directly

in the garden in early March, as they can withstand cooler

temperatures.

Crowded houseplants can be repotted. On warm days, you

can even put them outside, but don’t forget to bring indoors

if temperature drops below 55 degrees F during the night.

Budbreak has already begun, and the drive to brighten the home landscape is growing every day. The landscape, however, does not stand

alone. The extent to which work is done can have a positive

or negative effect on your outdoor space.

Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way �rst. One negative

result of poorly planned landscaping is a reduction of

effective drainage around the home’s foundation. There

should be a gradual slope of about 1 inch per foot for 10 or

12 feet out from the perimeter of the home. With gutters

or without, this grade helps encourage rainwater to drain

away from the foundation. Thoughtless alteration of this

grade can trap water against the foundation to a degree that

defeats almost any waterproo�ng protocol.

Planting dense shrubbery too close to the foundation is

another mistake. This not only impedes the proper growth

of the plants, but also makes trimming dif�cult, restricts

visual inspection of the foundation, interferes with access to

exterior water and electrical outlets, and weakens security by

providing a screen to unwelcomed activity. Remember, too,

that the root line of trees extends well beyond the drip line

of the limbs. Locate trees far enough away from foundation

and drainage lines so that their natural growth won’t damage

either of these essential components of the home.

Now for the good stuff! Obviously, attractive landscaping

makes the home a more pleasant place to live and a more

valuable commodity when it goes on the housing market.

It is a vital part of curb appeal and can really go far in

converting a house into a home. Thoughtful landscaping can

also contribute to the energy ef�ciency of the home, to the

durability of exterior surfaces and to the nutritional health

of the occupants.

home in summer – when in full

foliage – allow the sun to warm

the home in the colder months

since their branches are bare of sun

blocking leaves. Just be sure the trees

are located so they do not actually

overhang the home. Pines and other

evergreens don’t provide this double

bene�t but can be excellent wind

screens when planted to intersect

the prevailing winds. South facing

surfaces take a hit from the sun

and paint or stain �nishes always

deteriorate more quickly there. The

same trees that cut down on cooling

bills also reduce paint or stain

breakdown by gently de�ecting the

damaging rays.

Edible landscaping will save you

money and provide fresher choices.

Blueberries are a perfect choice; easy

to grow, generous in produce, and

beautiful in all seasons. Figs are a

tradition in the South. Okra produces

lovely �owers in addition to tasty

seed pods (make mine fried, thank

you). Fresh herbs are decorative

and enhance any meal. Swiss chard

comes in a rainbow of colors and, as

a cut-and-come-again plant, provides

luscious greens while remaining as an

accent in the landscape. Break out the

seed catalog and make your pick. It’s

plantin’ time.

Is Your Deck Built Correctly? Check its safety before outdoor spring activity begins

If you own an outdoor deck and have not paid

attention to its condition, you may be at grave risk. This is

the time of year to concentrate on getting your deck ready

for spring. If you have concerns about your deck, be sure

to address them before you have an episode. Bottom line:

Don’t use it until it is �xed or inspected.

Whether your deck is new or old, it may suffer the same

malady: It’s “built wrong”. But how can that be? If it is

new construction, it has to be built …right? After all, it’s

been inspected. Unfortunately, not all decks are inspected.

Assumptions are made based on visual situations.

Ask yourself these questions:

1. Is the deck more than 10 years old?

2. Does the deck need a new �nish, new wood or

restoration?

3. Is the deck moving from side to side?

4. Is the deck bouncing when you walk? Are there loose

boards?

5. Is the guardrail moving? Are all rails secured?

6. Do the posts look like they are failing? Are the metal

posts rusted? Are the posts moving at ground level?

7. Is the deck pulling away from the house?

8. Are there nails holding the deck together and are they

rusting?

If you answer yes to any of these questions (or have to stop

and think about any of them), stop using your deck right

now.

Decks should not be built with nails. They require bolts,

hangers and fasteners. Decks should never be attached

through a brick wall or through siding.

Be safe and have a professional take a look at your deck to

help you evaluate the safety concerns.

Highlights of this year’s show include The SeeThru House™, a show-stopping 3,000-square-foot exhibit that shows you how a house is built and what goes on behind the walls of your home. Not only can you see the framing of the house, but you also get to experience �rst hand the internal workings of how your house was built (or should have been built) and how the plumbing, electrical, security, and more are handled. The SeeThru House™ exhibit is built and staffed by professional service providers from ConsultAHomePro.com, including a code-certi�ed residential housing inspector, who will be on hand to answer all of your questions and to provide assistance in solving your problems.

The Aging in Place exhibit will show how simple elements of universal design can make your home accessible and safe for everyone regardless of age or ability featuring a kitchen, bath, ramps and entryway options. This exhibit and the experts present at the show will offer real solutions to your tough questions regarding living longer in your own home.

The show will be held Friday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 23, from noon-6 p.m. General admission is $10, with free admission for adults 65 and over, children 12 and under and military personnel.
