Layers of the Atmosphere

• The atmosphere has four layers:–Thermosphere–Mesosphere–Stratosphere–Troposphere

What is air pressure?

• Earth’s atmosphere is pressing on each square centimeter of you.

• About 1 kilogram per square centimeter (14.7 pounds per square inch)

Page 4: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

Layers of the Atmosphere

• The atmosphere is divided into layers based on temperature changes.

The first layer of the atmosphere is the…

• The troposphere is the layer of the atmosphere nearest to earth.

• The troposphere goes from 0km to 16km.• All weather happens in the troposphere.• More than half the air in the total atmosphere is in

this layer.• The temperature drops as the altitude increases.• Harmful ozone is found here…IT CREATES SMOG!

TROPOSPHERE

Page 8: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

What is OZONE?• A gaseous layer in the upper

atmosphere that protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. At lower levels, ozone becomes a major pollutant.

What is SMOG? Pollution formed by

the interaction of pollutants and sunlight (photochemical smog), usually restricting visibility, and occasionally hazardous to health.

Page 9: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

The second layer of the atmosphere is the…

• The stratosphere goes from 16km to 50 km.

• The temperature goes up with altitude.

• Most jets fly in this layer.• The protective ozone is at

the top of the atmosphere (It protects us from the ultraviolet radiation of the sun.)

• Rivers of air, called Jet Streams, can be found at the base of this layer.

STRATOSPHERE

Page 10: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

The third layer of the atmosphere is the…

• The Mesosphere goes from 50km to 90km.

• In the mesosphere, the temperature drops with altitude.

• The mesosphere is the coldest layer of the atmosphere.

• Meteors burn up in this layer.

• Radio waves are reflected back to earth in the mesosphere.

MESOSPHERE

Page 11: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

The fourth layer of the atmosphere is the…

• The thermosphere goes from 90km to 300km.• In the thermosphere the temperature goes up with

altitude. • The thermosphere is the hottest layer of the

atmosphere.• Curtains of light called auroras occur in this layer.• The Ionosphere is found in the thermosphere. This

is the component of the thermosphere that makes the auroras.

THERMOSPHERE

Page 12: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

The last layer of the atmosphere is the…

• The exosphere is the outermost layer of the atmosphere.

• The temperature in the exosphere goes up with altitude.

• Satellites orbit earth in the exosphere.

EXOSPHERE

Page 13: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

Layers of the Atmosphere

The four layers of the atmosphere include:

1. the troposphere, where we live;

2. the stratosphere, which contains the ozone layer;

3. the mesosphere, where meteors burn; and

4. the thermosphere, where satellites orbit Earth.

Page 14: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

The exosphere and ionosphere• Communication on Earth

depends on satellites. • Satellites transmit

information used for television shows, radio broadcasts, data and photos used in weather reports, and long distance telephone calls.

GOOD LUCK!

It is important to understand the different characteristics of the earth’s atmosphere.

As you go through the following slides, challenge your partner to see who can name the correct layer in which each

characteristic can be found.

5.2 The ozone layer

• In the 1970s, scientists noticed that the ozone layer in the stratosphere above Antarctica was thinning.

Page 25: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

5.2 Chlorofluorocarbons and the ozone layer

• A group of chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (or CFCs) were once commonly used in air conditioners, in aerosol spray cans, and for cleaning machine parts.

• In the London Agreement of 1991, more than 90 countries banned the production and use of CFCs except for limited medical uses.

Page 26: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

5.2 Chlorofluorocarbons and the ozone layer

• The ozone layer absorbs the Sun’s high-energy ultraviolet (UV) radiation and protects the Earth.

Page 27: Atmosphere. Layers of the Atmosphere The atmosphere has four layers: –Thermosphere –Mesosphere –Stratosphere –Troposphere

5.2 Chlorofluorocarbons and the ozone layer

• In the stratosphere, the CFCs break down and release chlorine.

• The chlorine reacts with ozone molecules, which normally block incoming ultraviolet radiation.
