Any other comments from participants?

Yes: “folk”.

The response to this question shows that it is clearto readers what genre of music I was intended topresent in my magazine. Some participants haveresponded with rock and pop, as well as theadditional comment of folk which is understandable.Indie music is a wide genre that is often linked toother genres (indie rock and indie pop are oftenconsidered genres in themselves), so I still thing theslight variety in responses demonstrates I havesuccessfully appealed to my audience in terms ofgenre.

No.

The response to this question showswhat I expected and intended. Although Ido want to appeal to both genders withmy product, the focus is more onattracting female readers. The surveyshows that I have been successful increating a product suited to bothgenders, but one that leans slightly moretowards the feminine side.

Again the feedback here implies I havebeen successful in appealing to my targetaudience. The two main age groups I wastargeting were teenagers aged 15 to 18 andadults aged 19 to 25. Participants of thequestionnaire have recognised that theproduct appeals most to these age groupsand so I can conclude that I have appealedto my intended age group.

I was aiming to create a professional andconventional product with my music magazine, sothat I could attract a class B/upper class C1audience. This question shows that I have beenpartly successful in doing this. The majority of thefeedback states that the product only “partly” has aprofessional look. However over 33% of participantsreplied “yes” it does look professional, and I only hadone response of “no”. Therefore I think I can see thatmy product could be improved in terms ofprofessionalism, but that it still manages to appeal tomy audience.

Any other comments from participants?

Yes: “artists featured”, “bands” and “colour coordination”.

The variety in response to this questionsuggests that I have been successful inappealing to my audience. I attempted toensure that every feature of mymagazine attracted readers and the factthat every option of this question has atleast five respondents who chose itmakes me confident that I have managedto do this.

13 people responded with ‘no’ however the following areas ofimprovement were identified:• FONTS: several people commented that some fonts were unclear

or that the variety of fonts was unnecessary. They suggested thatless fonts would look more professional and less ‘erratic’.

• COLOURS: respondents generally liked the colour scheme butcommented that the peach and white may be difficult for somereaders to see clearly

• IMAGE: some responses suggested that the images – particularlythe front cover image – needed to be edited slightly to look moreprofessional. Just small tweaks like increasing the brightness andthe quality.

• LAYOUT: there were several answers that commented on the overly‘busy’ structure, particularly on the contents page. They suggestedthat making everything less crowded might make it easier to read.

Although there were several areas ofimprovement identified by respondents, theywere mostly about minor adjustments to makethat would adapt look of the magazine. Nobodysuggested changes in the feature stories, artistsfeatured or the free gift offered so I feel thoseareas successfully appealed to my audience.Aesthetic is also a matter of opinion so althoughthe actual look of my magazine may not appeal tomy audience as much as I thought, it is verysubjective and easily fixable.

There is, again, a wide variety in response tothis question. The majority of peopleanswered ‘7’ which, although not ideal, I thinkis acceptable and shows that I was at leastpartly successful in attracting my audience. The survey revealed that a lot of myparticipants didn’t necessarily buy magazineson a regular basis anyway, which may explainthe response to this question.

Page 17: Attracting My Audience: Feedback

39 people responded “no” to this question for a variety of reasons:some because they thought it was a unique product, others becausethey didn’t read any other magazines. Other comments included:• NME• Q

• “Teen Vogue, sort of, and Journal... also Family Circles, butonly because of the colour scheme...”

• “Not exactly. The way it's styled does remind me of mostmusic magazines on the market (AP, for instance) but it hasit's own twist, I think. Plus it features bands that you don'tusually see on magazines but people love. I like that about itmost.”

• “A folk version of Kerrang!, but better.”• “It reminds me of a cross between music magazines and

Seventeen.”

Page 18: Attracting My Audience: Feedback

I feel these responses show that I havesuccessfully appealed to my targetaudience. The suggestion that my magazineis similar to existing products like Q, NMEand Kerrang! means that I have created aconventional product that attracts a similaraudience to these magazines.

Page 19: Attracting My Audience: Feedback

In conclusion I feel I have beensuccessful in attracting myaudience. Although there aresome improvements that could bemade, as a whole I think thissurvey has shown that my productis conventional and appeals to theaudience that I intended it to.
